We've been to Kuay Tiew Noodle before and have always enjoyed the food, which is why this take out order was disappointing. I don't know if they changed chefs or if it was just an off night, but the quality wasn't what we've experienced in the past. I started with the papaya salad, which was pretty bland and lacked the bright, fresh flavors I was expecting. For my entree, I ordered the Pad See Ew with beef, spicy level 2, and extra sauce. The spice level was perfect, and the balance of basil was nice. The flavor overall was good, but the noodles were broken into small pieces and a bit mushy, which affected the texture. It wasn't terrible, just kind of "eh" compared to previous visits. My husband ordered the Pad Thai with chicken and shrimp, extra sauce. Unfortunately, he disliked it so much that he threw it away before I could even take a picture. What really concerned us was finding hard crunchy pieces in the dish that definitely were not peanuts. They looked more like crystals, which was very strange and unexpected. We're hoping this was just an off night because we've had good experiences here before. Great Thai noodle spot. Waitstaff is very attentive and helpful. Though it's not truly authentic but all the dishes do remind me of Thai street noodles. Khao Soi serves with rice noodle instead of egg noodle. Curry is good. Shrimp pad thai is on the sour side more than sweet. Not bad. Duck noodle is ok. Doesn't have much of the herbal flavor but is more of the clear noodle soup. Pork noodle is also ok. A bit weird with the lettuce in it. Chicken satay is good. The meat is not too dry and not burnt. Great Thai place! Came here at 5:30 on a Saturday and got the last table without a reservation. By the time we left there was a line of 10 people waiting. I will make a reservation next time. The place is on the smaller side. Also seems to do a good takeout business. It's warm and inviting with deep reds and a coffered ceiling. There is a back wall with a small water feature. Me and my husband split the mango salad and the noodle curry. Delicious. The mango salad comes with a sticky rice that is so good, it's rich in flavor and balances out the tangyness and acidity of the salad. The 3 fried shrimp on top had a great flavor too and nice crunch. The curry had a good level of spice but was balanced out by the coconut milk. I loved the crunchy noodles on top and it was packed with veggies like broccoli and carrots. I kept drinking the broth because it was so good! Food for the soul! Dishes around $20 reasonably priced! The pad thai and pad kee mao are classic Thai dishes and Kuay Thai does both very well, with chicken, pork, or seafood options. Their specials are worth taking a look at, too. I have tried the pad ped moo par (spicy wild board) and seafood tod (pancake) from the specials. The entree portions are pretty large; I usually only eat half and have to take the rest home. The location of Kuay Tiew is very convenient, in the heart of walkable downtown Somerville. The restaurant is fairly spacious, with additional outdoor seating during the warm months. Kuay Tiew can be pretty busy during dinner time, especially on the weekends. They accept same-day reservations so I make sure to call ahead and avoid a long wait. read more

It may have been the food but also a faint aroma of incense possibly. Their hostess immediately greeted me and handed over my order. I was in and out in record timing. This place was close to where I am and it's on a cute strip of Main St in Somerville. I popped in for dinner at 6:45pm and the place already had a few tables seated including two big groups. I ordered the khao soi which is a curry noodle soup with veggies and tofu and fried egg noodles on top. Portion size is very decent and for $18, it's a very good price. Soup base was good, very creamy and you can taste the coconut milk and possibly peanut butter, which made the soup very rich. Soup was chock full of broccoli, carrots, tofu, and romaine lettuce (I'm not usually a fan of lettuce but this worked). I also asked for it to be mild but waitress will check what level of spicy you would like. Overall, I had a great meal here and would totally come back to try some other items, I saw larb on the menu and would love to have their papaya salad too. Very friendly waitress, very cute place inside, but my pad Thai was sort of just mediocre. It tasted OK, not great, but the chicken was pretty dry. I think a lot of places now are pre-cooking their meat, and that always makes for a very dry chewing experience. We were catching up with a friend and after appetizers came and we hadn't started the host said to eat our appetizers while they are hot. I am already planning my first take out order. I stopped in for lunch with my dad who is hard to please but pretends he is not. We wanted to get a bite to eat somewhere in Somerville and after a quick walk around Main St, Kuay caught our eye. So happy we stopped in! We started with the Yum Squid salad, which was soooo tasty and refreshing. We also got the Duckie Puff which was like a very light pastry filled with some duck meat and maybe curry? I am actually not sure, but it was a little sweet and a lotta delicious. Two recommendations for apps for sure. For my entree I got the pad see ew with squid and thought it was fantastic! Packed with flavor, noodles were cooked so well and they definitely did not skimp on the squid. I brought home leftovers and it was the perfect lunch the next day. We've been here quite a few times but not since the pandemic. It's good to see them surviving and striving. We tried different things today. Got the fried fish cakes for appetizer. It's delicious, good texture and served with peanut sauce. For dinner, I had the Tom yum soup noodles with squid. They gave a lot of squid, noodles were perfect, and the soup was very flavorful. It's perfect for an autumn evening. My husband had pad kee mao, and he enjoyed it, too. We didn't have reservation so they seated us at the bar, which was perfect. The restaurant has the open kitchen up front, and long dining area with nice decor. The wait staff were friendly and nice. Came here on a Saturday night for an earlier dinner. It wasn't too crowded when we arrived but it filled up by the time we left (around 7:45). This is definitely more of an upscale Thai restaurant compared to your normal Thai takeout spot. The atmosphere is cozy and dark which makes it kind of hard to read the menus. For starters we got the pork ribs and fried wontons stuffed with crab and cheese. We thought these apps were just okay. The pork ribs were tender and had a sweet and sour sauce. The wontons had a light and crispy shell and the filling was pretty much like a crab Rangoon. The main course is where things vastly improved. We ordered fried rice with crab, shrimp pad se ew, and the Chilean sea bass. The fried rice had a good amount of crab meat in it and was a pretty good size portion. The pad se ew was some of the best pad se ew we've had. You could taste the subtle smokiness from the wok and the noodles were so velvety and perfectly coated with the sauce. The Chilean sea bass was the star of the show. It's one of my favorite fish to eat and this place did it right. They somehow kept the skin crispy even after being doused with sauce and laying on a bed of mushrooms and greens and the meat itself was perfectly tender. The sauce was like a sweet chili sauce which had a nice little kick at the end. It went perfect with a bowl of steamy, fragrant Thai white rice. For dessert we ordered the banana roti and the mango sticky rice. The banana roti was kind of like a sweet banana egg roll that was cut into pieces. The roti shell was nice and crispy with a sugar coating and the banana was soft and chewy. There was condensed milk in the roll as well to give it some moisture and a scoop of chocolate ice cream. The mango sticky rice was so addictively good. The rice was warm and had a subtle coconut flavor and the mango added a bright sweetness. It was drizzled with condensed milk to bring it all together. Overall I thought this was a great dinner option if you're craving more upscale Thai food. I would come back and maybe try some different apps and other entrees that sounded delicious. Food: as I dig into my lard na, I ask myself are there regional differences in the way they make it? Some restaurants make it as a thinner brown gravy and others make it in a thicker beige gravy.
