We were hanging out at the Somerset NJ County Library System Bridgewater Branch--which has a great children's section--when two hangry kids suddenly starving and in need of nourishment. Back in my day, that meant burgers and fries. These two? Sushi. Clearly, kids' tastes have evolved. A quick Yelp search led us to Sushi Yokohama, about 10 minutes away and described as a casual spot with very good sushi. It was also our first time visiting Somerville's Main Street, and we were impressed with the variety of restaurants there. Parking was a bit tight, but we found a metered spot around the corner, with a municipal lot nearby as a backup. We were quickly seated in a comfortable booth and promptly given menus and water. Three of us ordered bento boxes--two sushi and one sashimi--along with gyoza and fried rice. My sashimi bento was very good, and while the sushi was solid, the sashimi stood out as the better of the two. The gyoza was excellent; the fried rice was a bit bland. Service was consistently friendly and attentive throughout and prices were very reasonable for a sushi establishment ($58 for four meals). Overall, a very enjoyable visit. There were 4 of us for lunch specials. We ordered the lunch box specials. Two salmon, chicken, and shrimp teriyaki. The lunchbox specials were decent. You got soup and salad with it. The lunchbox specials comes with three shumai, four California rolls and the meat ordered. The salmon that we ordered was very thin, but it was tasty. The chicken was better because you had more meat. The shrimp teriyaki came with five shrimps. It was decent for the price, but I wish we tried the sushi. The food came out fairly quickly. I heard about this shop from people who have come here a few times as they enjoy the options. It is located on main street so be sure to consider metered street parking or a public parking lot. I ordered a spicy Kani salad which wasn't bad but it seemed kinda dry. I may be used to a moist soft crab with sauce when I order Kami salad but this was just the crab meat with chili flakes. It's certainly good for a light appetizer as you wait for your main dish. I ordered 2 sushi rolls from their chefs special menu that they keep on the side wall. One was tropical with mango so it was slightly sweetened. Another had shrimp tempura so there was fried oil taste to it. The environment isn't too loud and the wait staff come by every now and then to refill waters. It is certainly an interesting restaurant. Reasonable pricing. A long awaited visit, and frequently called some of the best sushi around! I am glad we finally got to visit. The menu has a lot to pick from, with very affordable prices and fresh tasting fish! There is a long list of rolls and special rolls to choose from, as well as col and hot appetizers, cooked entrees, noodles and more. My table shared the tuna tataki (which was big enough for all 6 of us to share, believe it or not!) We all got rolls and sushi meals, and everyone was very satisfied. The portions were generous, and the service was fast without us feeling rushed. This is a BYOB restaurant, right in the middle of downtown Somerville. Its a great spot, but very difficult to find parking during peak hours (Friday/Saturday around dinner). We recommend making a whole day out of it or carpooling if you are going with a group. Not the best for larger groups, as most of the seating are booths. Its a little difficult to put a large table together. A party of 6 or less is perfect. Uh oh. If this doesn't de-throne Kim's in West Orange as my new favorite sushi, it's close. Superb quality, great prices, and personal attention from the owner? A hat trick pulled off at Yokohama. What really hooked me (ok, pun intended) is the exciting specials menu. The uni fresh from Japan was among the best I've had. Tip: the chu-toro (40% minimum fat content) is nearly as good as the otoro, and $2 cheaper per piece. I was disappointed that they were out of the live scallop... have to come again to try that! Ambiance is nice. I think it used to feel like a swimming pool but has been touched up with some warm wood accents sometime recently. Excellent, excellent, excellent. read more

I wish I lived closer to Somerville because this would be my weekly sushi spot! Service was quick and our server was simply the sweetest, by helping my Mom choose a roll that wasn't spicy and it was so delicious! She ended up with the Kamikaze roll. I ordered the salmon avocado roll, a classic that didn't disappoint. The pumpkin tempura roll was warm and a fun change from the sweet potato tempura roll I usually get. But the MARS roll...dang! This place was super okay! We got the sashimi lunch box specials to go. The shumai were so overcooked that the delicate wrapping immediately disintegrated and fell apart as we tried to pick them up. The rice was cooked nicely and the sashimi didn't wow us but wasn't overly-fishy... it was so neutral taste it was barely there. We tried this restaurant because we used to eat at YUTAKA which we had eaten at for over 2 years, but the last time we were there 1 month ago the sashimi was served warm and the sushi wasn't as good. We both ordered miso soup, salad which is served in a large with tomato, cucumber, lettuce and dressing and our main course 1 order of Sushi & Sashimi Combo. Sushi Yokohama is definitely a gem in the downtown Somerville area. I've been eating there prior to them moving to their now most recent location and they definitely never disappointed. Service here is always polite , attentive and very fast no complaints whatsoever. The I decided to get sushi off the A La Carte menu this visit. All the pieces were fresh and the rice was perfect. Sometimes nigiri pieces can be a bit small or the rice either not firm enough so it crumbles or too dry and it ends up being hard like kernels. Neither was the case here. If you're looking for good quality sushi definitely check out Yokohama. I've recommended it to all my friends and they've had very good experiences . It's got better quality then Sushi Palace and it won't be too pricey like Ai Sushi down the street . read more

I ordered the spicy crab and seaweed salad for an appetizer, and it was a good portion, but I prefer a creamy mayo-like base, not the oil-base that it was. I'd definitely recommend the spicy crunchy tuna roll, pink lady, and spicy Titanic rolls (we love spicy tuna and crunchy panko texture in this household)- they didn't skimp out on the filling and the fish was fresh. I grabbed some ramen to go from this Somerville downtown joint. The ordering process was very simple online and easy to navigate. They were advertising gift cards online as well but unfortunately, I couldn't figure out how to order one for a friend online. I was a bit disappointed by this feature. After ordering, the establishment sent updates about when the food was ready. I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen here. The item was packaged nicely, with the noodles and toppings separated from the broth. The broth was piping hot and I immediately mixed both home when I opened it. The egg was cooked perfectly and I loved the bamboo shoots in the dish. Unfortunately, I do think the pork was over-cooked and a bit chewy. I also felt that the broth lacked a bit of flavor. I expected the broth to be a little richer with this type of ramen. I feel like this restaurant's specialty is sushi and I do regret venturing off to get ramen at this sushi place. When I come back, I think I'll just stick to their sushi! read more

The restaurant has been around a long time and gets very packed on the weekend so if you're going to go, I would recommend making a reservation. If you're coming on a weekday for lunch, they have very reasonably priced lunch specials that you can take advantage of. They also have a lot of non sushi dishes if you are going with someone that may not eat raw fish. The prices are very reasonable, I think and the service is very quick. If you're going to skip something, I would say don't get the karaage chicken, it's a little on the dry side. But I highly recommend their spicy kani salad.
