Origin Tattoo owned by Nicholas Black, is a great shop located in Folsom, CA. My girlfriend has been working with Nick to start on a full-sleeve tattoo and then arrived leg piece. But was recently in the shop to get a smaller design, as an appointment opened up on Nick's schedule. When we arrived the shop was just opening up and Nick's happily greeted us, as he finished up setting up his work area. The shop itself has a nice layout and really inviting environment, with the small waterfall up front near the merch area. And the nice scents and decor and the waiting area up front. The array of art pieces and assorted tattoo related books, brings together the unique elements of this shop. The shop is also large enough, to have a setup for 5 artists to work comfortably. Once ready, Nick's took my girlfriends ideas and example images and freehand drew her piece on. Piecing together the elements she wanted while adding his artistic spin to it; even adding an additional piece that he felt complimented her idea. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of getting tattooed by Jayc! Upon walking in, I was greeted by the relaxing smell of incense and the sounds of their beautiful fountain in the reception area. Already, I felt the good vibes. Jayc took me back and already had a rendered image with the artwork placed on my arm. It was cool to see exactly how it would look on my body, with my existing tattoo! It had been a while since I had been tattooed, so I was a little nervous. Jayc was very thorough in her consultation and made sure to listen to exactly what I wanted, this design came out better than I could've hoped! She made sure that I was doing ok throughout the tattoo, they had chill music playing and they even had snacks and sodas out, just in case clients got hungry. What a nice touch! If you are wanting to get tattooed, I would highly recommend her. This has by far been the best, most comfortable tattoo experience I've ever had. This is my favorite tattoo studio of all time! I've only had good interactions with the people here and I always feel at ease the second I walk in. My first (ever) tattoo piece done here was back in 2019. I came for a floral rib piece created by Eric Goodman (@goodmancreates). The experience I had with Eric was incredible. It's probably what convinced me to continue getting tattoos because I absolutely hate needles! I'd highly recommend his work and his vibes. He's a crazy talented artist and loves what he does. When I saw Eugene's (@kwon_tattoos) work popup on social media, I knew I wanted my next piece from him. I came back to the studio last week for a small arm tattoo. Eugene showed me the concept for the tattoo and I was instantly in love! I knew it was going to be so good. During the process, Eugene was so considerate and fun to talk to. He worked quickly and efficiently + kept conversation flowing as I was being tattooed. I love how easily he turned my vision into a lifelong piece that I'll treasure forever! I got a tattoo from Austin a couple weeks ago and the guy is an ass to say the least. Origin strives to make a comfortable environment for clients and Austin does not fit that vibe. Austin didn't bother to do a consultation with me to understand my vision, refused to share the design ahead of time and then was unwilling to make changes to the custom design and placement of the tattoo. I felt pressured to accept his art as is even though it was a custom design. After I told him it wasn't what I had envisioned he told me he's the artist and he knows best. I'm at the golden state tattoo convention right now with artists from around the world and they have all said that my experience with Austin is not and should not ever be the norm but Austin made me feel like it was the norm for artists to not accept changes and made me feel like I was being a difficult client. It wasn't cool and isn't a good rep for Origin. When people ask me where I got my tattoo done I tell them not to go to there because it was a shitty experience. Austin is a good artist but if he isn't flexible and he should stick to canvas! read more

I came to Origin art gallery following Eric, one of the 2 founding artists. He had tattooed me in the past, and I had chosen to come back for an array of reasons. I've been tattooed quite a bit and have searched around for what some would consider "high end" work. I've been tattooed by people that some would consider the best in the geometric and dot work world... and Eric surpassed these other artists by a long shot. He's extremely efficient with his time, and works ahead on your artwork. Which is something I've come to find is difficult with other artists. He's ready as soon as you show up and doesn't take a bunch of breaks unless you need it. He's very thorough with his stencil placement and thinks through your future artwork to plan ahead. I love my tattoo and think the vibes and everything of the studio are great!! However it was not communicated properly to me that there would be a $150 "drawing fee" on top of the cost of the tattoo?? I just wish that was way more clear and I would've liked my artist to go over that with me. I vaguely remember seeing it on the consultation form in small print when I booked back in august but I have never even heard of an artist doing a "drawing fee", so I assumed it would be taken out of the final cost like a normal deposit. On top of that I was not able to see my design until my appointment. Just feeling a bit disappointed with the communication. Origin Art Gallery is HANDS DOWN the BEST tattoo shop I have ever been to. When you first walk in, you're greeted warmly by Nick and his fellow artists. The vibe of the whole shop is absolutely incredible. It's nothing like your typical shop. Art is displayed on walls throughout, incense are burning leaving you pleasantly calm, there are comfy couches in the waiting area, and each tattoo station has a giant window looking out into a gorgeous wooded area. When getting my chest piece tattooed by Nick, I felt 100% comfortable. He takes client comfort to the next level. Nick put down a heating pad on the tattoo chair to ensure I would not get cold, he uses a warmer for the solution used to wipe away excess ink during the tattoo so that you're not shocked with the cold liquid, and he is extremely communicative throughout the tattoo process. Each artist carefully crafts their unique pieces and show tremendous amounts of pride when they are finished. I will happily be returning to Origin Art Gallery! Thank you Nick! read more

Here's the skinny if you got an email the "books are closed". There is currently a 6 month wait to "get on the books" which means getting an email from the artist about your financial commitment. Deposit is $150 for each date scheduled based on the size of tattoo. Nick Black only does large tattoos: back, half leg, full arm and no cover ups. Typically 4 full day sessions lasting 6 hours. Daily rate is $1200, hourly rate is $200. Deposit is required to hold dates and he is booked out a year. So plan on waiting 18 months to get a tattoo. You can send ideas, photo, etc., via email once you have paid your deposit and have the dates set, but don't expect a response until you are a month away from your first appointment. The art speaks for itself and may be worth the wait but don't expect to collaborate. You will not see any art ahead of time. Yes, you read that correctly, nothing ahead of time. You show up for the first appointment and the tattooing begins. Assume you have 4 full day sessions with a $150/day deposit, your investment a year and a half in advance is $600 (non-refundable). Each full day costs $1200, so (4 x $1200 = $4800) but your deposit applies. He likes to schedule your appointments about 1-2 weeks apart, so you can expect to shell out the full $4200 within about 30-40 days. If you are comfortable providing a blank canvas and paying ALOT for a tattoo sight unseen, then go for it. read more

I went to Eric for my first larger tattoo. I was super nervous but he made everything comfortable and it was a breeze. We cracked jokes the entire time and took breaks as I needed. He answers any questions you have and provides thorough instructions for aftercare. I've gone back to him multiple times now and will always recommend others to look at his work and hit him up. Eric puts a ton of time into all of his art and seems to never stop drawing. The entire crew they put together here at Origin is great and I can't wait to see what they do in the future.
