The price is a bit steep but the quality is worth it if you want rustic Italian bread for your sandwiches and they were perfect for our day hike since there is no mayonnaise on them. I was here a few years ago visiting family. It was so delicious, I insisted that we stop by for one more meal before heading back to California. I still talk about how perfect my prosciutto panini was and I still dream of their delicious food. Not only were the ingredients as fresh as could be, but the proportions of bread to meat, the pressing and toasting of the sandwich, the seasoning - absolutely everything was perfect. The Diavolo sandwich was delicious! Delicious Italian meats, on a toasted panini bread, with a kick of spicy. Awesome sandwich. We got them to go, so I bet they would have been even better if we ate them as soon as they were ready. Tried the potato salad instead of chips. It was ok, but I wasn't overly impressed. This is my favorite sandwich place. I hesitate to tell anyone else because I don't want to share. I want to be selfish! I recommend their lattes, so fantastic. So after eating another downtown restaurant that I crave I noticed this place. I'd never been in so I checked out the menu. Italian Sandwiches, one of my favorite things. I order a godfather to go for dinner. When I got back to my room the aroma was too much and I had to try this thing. All I can say is amazing! Having eaten many Italian sandwiches from many different places I thought I knew what to expect. From the perfect focaccia to the thin cut authentic meats I couldn't believe my tastebuds. I will not go back to this restaurant. I only went because I had a recommendation from a close friend saying it was his "favorite Italian restaurant in Alaska." But I walk in and I felt not welcome. The cash register is on the opposite side of the entrance so I, not knowing, walk up to the employee standing IN FRONT of the door. She looked up at me and rudely asked "Can I help you?" Then instead of helping me she ignores me until I see the register at other side of the counter. Should have just left after that but maybe she had a bad day. Then me and my girlfriend proceed to order and the man taking my order never smiled until I paid maybe he thought I was homeless? We were in gym clothing so I don't know. It had an odd vibe and we both felt weird eating there. But average food for poor customer service. read more

My friend and I went for lunch. She had the veggie 'savory pie' which was super good and only $5. I had the split pea soup with Italian sausage and chickpeas. I thought the soup was really good if a tad thin. But it definitely hurt it that it was $8 for a bowl that was not more than a light lunch. If I'd have had nothing more that that, I'd have been hungry in about an hour. If it had only been $6, or the $5 the savory pie was, it would have been much more reasonable. I'm all about great flavor and I know the sausage they used was high quality, but it was way too high for what it is. They would have only earned a three star rating from me because of it, but the walnut cake with a chocolate whipped cream won me back over. Extremely good and worth the $5 price. I also got a cherry limonade for $4.50 which wasn't worth it but was good enough that I wasn't bummed- just not something I'll get next time. I'll be back but I think I'll try the savory pie or a sandwich next time. read more

No complaints here! I like it a lot better than the old location on dimond. But to the food...wonderful! Had the house panini and the special salad. The dressing on the greens had a nice hint of sweetness, and rolled, marinated slices of eggplant filled with mozzarella. Excellent. Nice selection of sandwiches, and Italian desserts like gelato and cannolis. Very nice, mellow atmosphere at 1:00 pm. Haven't been there for the lunch rush. Grazie Originale for choosing to open in Anchorage. They truly make the best cappuccino in town (whole milk only- no flavorings- don't even ask :)). Panini & the daily soups are luscious, reasonably priced and made with love. Since they close at 5, I also like to pick up giant cans of San Marzano's and the chef's own marinated olives from the cooler for dinners. The cherry limeade and passion fruit mousse are stand-outs. It's just a pleasant place to be. Note- the hubby rarely smiles, but don't take it personally. The food is dang good. read more

Coffee flavored water "espresso" We walked in. The owner looked up at us and looked the other way. We found the counter to order from. I ordered an Americano. It was the absolute worst coffee I've ever tasted. I've had coffee around the world and around the USA. I had to walk over to bread harvest and purchase an extra shot for my coffee to even taste like coffee. I've never had to do that before. When this place first moved in downtown, I had given it a try. It wasn't bad but it wasn't really memorable either. It's been months gone by, and I gave it another shot. Let me just say I've been in for lunch 3 times in the last week. The soups are amazing, they serve the best muffuletta Ive had in the state, and omg. The rice pudding. Walked in to Originale at EXACTLY 230p this afternoon (as advertised, last order is at 230p for 300p closing - hands on the clock on the wall LITERALLY said 230p, he pointed to it!). Was with two friends and there were only two other patrons seated at a table, already eating... It was only my second time at Originale but I LOVED IT the first time and was excited to be back! Husband/owner was drying the blade to the meat slicer and simply looked at us and said, we're closed - last order is at 230p! (Did not mention being out of focaccia bread for the day or anything like that.) We said, but it's EXACTLY 230p... He said - We open at 10a tomorrow (when we will have left town). Very disappointed and all I can say is NOT COOL. If DDD has given you sooooo much business that you can't even make 3 more sandwiches on a Thurs afternoon, then maybe I don't need to come back... I'm from California, and visit Anchorage once a year. I have to tell you that I LOVE this place. I ordered a half order of the Genovese sandwich and it was heavenly! It was flavorful and fresh. I was greeted when I walked through the door; the woman behind the counter was very patient when I did the tourist "umm..I want...umm" thing. I really love everything about this place and I'm glad they moved downtown because now I can go there on my lunch breaks! The owners are from Tuscany which should give you an idea about the quality of the food. In true Italian style everything is very simple but done extremely well. You'll be hard pressed to find a menu item with more than 4 ingredients. They use a house focaccia bread with nothing but high end meats and cheeses. Even their potato salad is good...and I don't even like potato salad. I would also highly recommend getting coffee there, it doesn't really matter what kind. Whether you like espresso, Americano or Latte's you will not regret it. I basically function on coffee and little else but this has completely ruined me for any other coffee place in town. read more

Considering Originale's at a strip mall across from.Sears, it has a lot of charm complete with tablecloths, cheese counter, map of Italy, poster of a Ferrari, and a bottle of aged balsamic vinegar for $168. Now the food. Their polo panino had to be one of the best chicken salad sandwiches I have ever had. The focaccia bread was soft and perfectly seasoned. Chicken salad had their special spice mix which was a perfect match for my tongue. And I love anything with arugula. They have hot and cold sandwiches averaging $9 to $13. One star off because for $9 I would have liked a little bigger portion. Other than that fast service, yummy food, and cute place to shop for some nice Italian food items. read more

Originale is hands down the best cafe/deli in anchorage. They import the finest cheeses and meats you can't find anywhere else in town, and also conform to a style of perfection when it comes to the preparation. It's not expensive, nor is it like any other place in town that charges the exact same as they do for a coffee or sandwich. If they run out of bread, that's your own damn fault for not waking up earlier. I am giving 5 stars because I have never had anything like I had today for lunch at this place. The decor inside is so nice! It was pricey but I believe that is because they import a lot of there ingredients from Italy into there food so I am sure that has a lot to do with the pricing. For 3 sandwiches and a limeade, the biggest size cappuccino and a caprese salad it came out to $50 even. Then afterwards for desert I had a coconut cream pie and my kids had there homemade gelato and it was excellent will be coming back again for sure! read more

Let me begin by saying the interior designer did a great job as the deli looks very modern and has some Italian-related images and an Anchorage-specific quote on the wall. Unfortunately, looks are all this place has going for it. I approach the register with a question about the amount of olives on the tuna sandwich. The man on the other side of the counter could not have looked any more like he thought it was a dumb question than he did before he answered, "enough to give it flavor." I dislike olives and, after being told they couldn't be taken off of the tuna sandwich, ordered Il Favortio, "the favorite." As I'm waiting for my sandwich at a table, I notice a number of signs posted around the restaurant that read, "our food is made from scratch [and therefore] takes time to [be prepared]. Be patient," and one that read, "Authentic. No flavors." I giggled at that one. After reading that, I was expecting a long wait. I was pleasantly surprised. The kitchen seemed to be very relaxed--I even saw an employee eating something in the kitchen, which is against health code--but the food did not take long to make it to my table. When the food arrived, I found that the second sign ("no flavors") didn't mean 'no artificial flavors', it was actually a warning that the food I had just paid for was going to be lacking in flavor. It was right. I have never tried to imitate Il Favorito at home, but I have made a tomato, basil and prosciutto sandwich in my own kitchen and I can say with confidence that the sandwich I made myself for about two dollars was significantly better than the eleven-dollar sandwich I got at Originale. The prices, by the way, are particularly high. The interior is great-looking, but other than that, I can't say much of anything nice about Originale. read more

I was really curious to try this place after a friend recommended it to me. Although the employees seemed cold and standoffish, the food was excellent. The bread used for the sandwiches is fresh and flavorful. But I just couldn't get over the uncomfortable feeling that the employees were not very concerned with helping me and making me feel welcome. Honestly felt like they didn't want me to be there. The customer service was awful. The stars are for the food alone. read more

I've been living in Anchorage Alaska now for a little over a year, even though I frequently travel and had the opportunity to live in many other countries Originale is one of my favorite spots to eat. Every time I'm in town my first place to stop by for lunch has to be at Originale. The service and food is always top-notch. I've ordered almost all the variety of sandwiches which are constantly made to perfection with fresh ingredients and upon order (not already pre-sliced drying out in the refrigerator) They always have daily fresh specials as side salads, soups and fantastic desserts. My favorite is the #9 sandwich made with Italian Rosemary ham, cheese and tomatoes with the Chefs delicious fresh focaccia bread, Btw, the special "spicy" sandwich is unbelievable. a MUST try !
