Wow! A must visit! Had an amazing dining experience! No better restaurant on the lake. The restaurant location used to be a pediatrician office? Who knew! The place also has been open a little over a year. Made reservations online through open table which was easy - requested to sit outside. Came in on a Thursday at 5p and the parking lot was already getting full. We walked in and the hostess immediately asked if we had a reservation. She asked if sitting inside was okay and we told her no, we would wait to sit outside. The manager chimed in and validated our request to sit outside. Plenty of tables were open outside on the patio. So not sure about the waiter rotation or what. Tables and chairs outside were ok - our table was wonky and was moving both back and forth and side to side. The chairs were standard wicker uncomfortable patio chairs. Ok, my complaining ends here! The views are everything and lots of docking if you are coming to dine from the water. The staff, especially our waiter were amazing. Attentive and welcoming. Menu wise - a good amount of options. Drink wise - no mocktail options. Our waiter agreed that there should be some on the menu and maybe one day there will. Happy hour was going on but all the happy hour menus were located on the inside tables. So not sure if that is on purpose or what? We went with the spinach and artichoke dip and our waiter asked if we wanted it off the happy hour menu which is a smaller portion. We asked what else is on the happy hour menu and he said fries along with wings. We then put in an order of wings too. Food came out fast and our appetizers were excellent. The wings were a good size and the buffalo sauce had a good bite (no veggies or dip to cool you off though). The spinach and artichoke dip was creamy and chips were crunchy. Good portion even with it being a happy hour option. Entree wise got the fish and chips and smash burger. However, the smashburger had a black hair chilling on the burger. Our waiter made it right and could see the hair right away on why I sent it back. The re-fire of the burger didn't take too long. Food was excellent! The fish and chips had such a good crunchy breading and fish was delicious. The smashburger was meaty and cheesy. The patties were decently thick for being a smashburger. The fries were awesome! Kids came home for the weekend and their only request was to go the Orion Boathouse for Smashburgers! So we popped in for lunch today and the burgers were as amazing as always. We arrived around 11:30, just ahead of the after church crowd so it was pretty quiet. When we left, it was starting to pick up. The smashburger is a very simple burger with two smashed patty, two slices of American cheese, aioli and pickles. I don't know how they can make something so simple taste so amazing! Do yourself a favor and pop in for a burger and swap the house chips for the truffle fries, equally as amazing as the burger. They were advertising for a Halloween event that is sure to be excellent. We attended their LO Fireworks event and it was amazing, so I am sure this will be as amazing. read more

This place is worth the view and location alone. I have never ate inside which has huge picture windows bc it's so loud and would rather sit in the sun. Warning tho most tables are not shaded. Which was fine at sunset on a beautiful evening. There are two large umbrellas and a deck overhand with some tables but many in full sun if that bothers you. Our server Joanna was SO GREAT. Best attitude, super kind, fast and patient when we needed time or were unsure. Lots of staff and everyone working crazy hard. The food was good but not exceptional. I wanted a little more mushrooms, onions and sauce with my steak but I didn't ask for it. The cookies weren't amazing and I likely would not order again. The service was phenomenal, our server was super sweet and she kept checking on us. When it was getting a little chilly sitting outside (beautiful sunset views of the lake btw), she insisted it wouldn't be a problem to move us inside. Food was really flavorful, and prices are pretty good for what you get. We ordered the Margherita Pizza, Perch Meunière, Sautéed Calamari, and a side of fries. What a great night out! I'd seen a few posts locally about Lake Orion's newest lakefront restaurant, but we're old and usually stick with our standard favorites. LOL Hubby and I grabbed a regular hot and ready for the middle schooler while the high schooler was at the football game, and we did an adult night out :) While I'd usually start off with a comment about drinks, they looked good (mimosa flight AND a bourbon flight?!?) but I had pre-partied before I knew we were going out and planned to work before the sun came up the next morning, so I stuck with water. Hubs did have a beer, but what is there to say about that?? I had the perch with asparagus, and hubby ordered the chicken sandwich. Both were good, and the apparent love for parmesan cheese was all right with me! The seasoning on the perch was right-on - some parmesan, a little lemon, some tasty onions - would definitely order again. I'm apparently an asparagus snob, as I love the tips, but the bottom is always too woody for me. The parmesan on the asparagus tips was yummy too. Since I skipped the drink, we shared a slice of cheesecake, which was a perfect ending to our meal. All of the tables have a great view of the lake, and watching the smooth rolling waves was hypnotic. Next time hubby wants to sit at the table that is a boat (no, not on the water, but looks like a boat...). I'm sure we'll be back. read more

First time at this beautiful restaurant right on the shores of scenic Lake Orion. First of all - THE VIEW! It's fabulous! There is a big outdoor dining area right on the water and we saw lots of boats going by. And dock space for diners arriving by boat. We sat inside looking out at the lake and loved the cute decor. One clever booth is made with part of a boat. The staff is friendly and helpful. I had to have the smash burger and it was delicious and hearty. I upgraded to the fries and they were perfectly prepared. Both were a home run! Great cocktails, wine and beer and I was able to select a nonalcoholic option from several. Great place for lunch, dinner and brunch. Desserts are made in house and look tasty. Too bad I was too full today but next time for sure. So I was hesitant to try this restaurant based on some negative reviews but actually everything was fine. We came at 12:30 on a Thursday. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were greeted pleasantly and we asked for outside seating as it was a nice sunny day. No problem, hostess even asked if we prefer sun or shade.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We had a young man as our waiter and he was also very nice and attentive, helpful with food recommendations. I ordered the small Orion House salad with chicken added. It was served in a too small size bowl. So I did request a large plate to spread it out on allowing me space to cut up the chicken as I was eating it. It was a good salad with light dressing. The goat cheese was interesting as not crumbled up over the whole salad but served as an encrusted ball off to the side. What a good idea and so tasty! I would order it again. My friend ordered the grilled chicken skewer and really liked it. We split a slice of cheesecake for dessert. It was fine, nothing out of the ordinary. I hate to give a review this early in a business' life but I genuinely hope this place goes the mile! We went on a Friday night around 6:45pm and it was a 45 min wait for 2. I called around 6:30 and was told it was a 15 minute wait- so I'm thinking this is the prime time to come. We were luckily able to get 2 seats at the bar within minutes. Although nice, we felt way overcrowded by the people around us waiting for a table trying to get a drink. This did die down at around 7:20 so definitely did not damper our meal. We were promptly greeted for a drink, but we decided to put our food order in since we figured it would be a bit of a wait. We ordered an app, pizza, burger, and side. Everything came at one time. I was hoping we would get the app first but it wasn't that big of a deal. Our space was just a bit crowded because of everything coming at one time! Starter- calamari- I felt like this was really a miss for this place. I feel like a fried calamari would be better. It wasn't bad by no means- but the calamari was luke warm (was it supposed to be warm or cold? I'm not sure) and overshadowed by everything else in the dish. It looked a bit messy and not put together. It was almost like a bruschetta. Burger- great flavor! But unfortunately overcooked. It was very crunchy on the outside. This wouldn't stop me from ordering again! It really tasted good just the overcooked texture was off putting. The chips that came with the burger were AWFUL! Why doesn't this burger come with fries? For $16 a burger should come with fries. Mac and cheese- I wanted to love this but it was SO salty! A little less salt and this would be delicious. margherita Pizza- very good!! Some of the "globs" of pesto on the pizza were a little over powering. It needed to be a bit spread out more. I also thought the capers on the pizza were very unnecessary. I've never seen capers on a margherita pizza. The crust was good. I would get again without the capers and light pesto. Weird pet peeve at the bar- but why is the TV turned off? Playoff basketball and hockey is on! All of the staff was pleasant and friendly. All of the problems we had with our meal Im certain will be worked out with time being open. I have wanted to try this place for a while and had a chance to visit for an early dinner (3pm). The place was empty, but to be expected at an odd time. When we walked in, a guy behind the bar yelled sit where you want without even looking up. The menu was still the brunch menu, which wasn't an issue, and it still had several good-looking items. Ordered a few pizzas and the double smash burger with fries. The food took over 30 minutes to arrive, and honestly, I was disappointed with the overall flavor. The Smashburger wasn't a true Smashburger, and the meat was extremely tough, which was odd, and the basil mayo overtook the taste of everything. The pizzas weren't bad but lacked flavor. Overall, the first interaction when walking in was just unpleasant and affected the whole experience. The location would be outstanding for drinks on the patio during the summer. read more

The only reason this isn't a two-star review is because the first two visits we had to the Orion Boathouse were good experiences. However, the last one was remarkably bad. Because we were celebrating a special event, we made a reservation in advance and requested an outdoor table so we could enjoy the view with our guests. We were notified by the hostess that outdoor tables - the best tables in the restaurant - were first come, first serve. They made no attempt to remedy the situation. I chalk this up to bad management because the decision to de-prioritize those who intentionally chose your restaurant for a special celebration and made a reservation makes very little sense from a customer service and business sense. Moving on from the hostess who wouldn't try to find a solution, we encountered a uniquely bad waitstaff. As we walked to the table, one of the waiters was yelling loudly over tables to other servers in a way that noticeably off-putting to customers. This happened multiple times. Then, our waitress took roughly 30 minutes to take our order, the food took another 40+ minutes to come out, and the order was wrong when it did come out. The food was OK and the drinks were average. If they not only want to charge their prices but also continue to survive as a business, management should examine their guest experience very closely...and quickly. Then, level up the food and drinks to a level worthy of being proud of. Right now, the restaurant seems to be wandering and lost. read more

Very nice location right on the water. We sat inside, but most of the tables are close enough to the windows that you feel almost outside. There was some sort of mix-up, but once our server finally appeared, she was good and the food came out with no timing issues at all. As another reviewer mentioned, they need to get some sound absorbers - one squealing two-year-old made it nearly impossible for us to hear each other. (One last note about the location: not sure there's any easy way to fix this, but putting the bathrooms in the corridor that leads to the kitchen means it's like playing frogger to get to and from the bathroom.) The chicken wings were amazing - even to my wife, who doesn't normally like wings. They were perfectly crisp and seasoned. The chimichurri sauce on top was excellent. The garlic-lemon aioli was too garlicky but we liked it anyway. Despite already getting the wings, we ordered the half chicken, and it was as perfectly done as the wings. I really couldn't imagine it being much better. The sauce was good and we appreciated the idea, but the sweet potatoes must have been candied or something and were far more sweet than necessary; the sweetness of unadulterated sweet potatoes would have been plenty. All in all, this makes the Boathouse the place I would go in LO if I wanted chicken. Almost forgot the cauliflower gratin - al dente perfection, with the right amount of cheese (not enough to drown the cauliflower or form an impenetrable chewy layer). The vegan risotto was good, but not excellent - less salt and more other flavors would have helped. The mushrooms were not plentiful enough - you could barely tell when a bite had a mushroom sliver in it. Our server recommended shrimp, which was a welcome addition. One of our party ordered 1942 Tequila. She did not ask the price and it wasn't shared. It was $58 for the shot. We asked to speak to the owner or manager. A manager came over and said it was in line with "Lake Orion". It seemed like the owner was there but would not come talk with us. The waitress said the owner had to put the tequila in the computer so she didn't know the price. A person in our party asked to substitute something harder that the crostini bread that came with the meatballs because she needed soft food. The waitress offered Mac-n-cheese. This was added on as a full side order - not a sub without telling us. Lesson learned. Not interested in returning unless I want to ask MANY questions. read more

A GREAT BURGER!!, I mean short rib and brisket you can't go wrong and the American cheese to top it off is a classic. I challenge any restaurant in Oxford/Orion to top this delicious beauty. The Calamari Dish was "heated" to perfection and I was impressed they actually have talented line cooks in the back of the house unlike most restaurants in the area. The only issue on this dish is it lacks salt to bring out the flavors. The Calamari is not rubbery, but it lacks flavor and the worst part of the dish. The star is left behind leaving the chorus of surroundings on the plate to take over. This can be fixed by simply seasoning the dish. I ran into the same issue with the Vegan Risotto. The dish can be incredible because without any seasoning, the dish still tasted ok. With a little salt and pepper I added, it was really good. I think most of these issue were just growing pains and we look forward to returning and making this place our go to. It's been literally 100 years since you could drink and dine waterfront in Lake Orion. So Orion Boat House is a welcome puzzle piece in the Lake O eating puzzle. I had been in a few times and returned for a few drinks with JP and friends. The place was hopping in the late afternoon with a Chamber of Commerce meet and greet filling most of the outside patio. Other than that it was half empty but the early hour was to blame. I get the boat house name and theme but the half a boat table despite being utilized seems a bit hokey to me. We decided to decamp to the bar for a few. At this point the dining room was pretty much filled as was the patio. We ordered drinks and then waited, and waited. And nothing complicated. I wanted house Pinot G! The methodically moving bartender was helping bar patrons and waitress orders and was stretched a bit thin. A trainee in tow simply watched but didn't pour a beer or glass of wine but I guess the training isn't hands on. Oddly the bartender, despite being alone would run non revenue water out to tables as if she had a tip on a drought while we waited for our drinks. At that point we decided to push off to Victoria's in Oxford. The place was already thinning out in true Lake Orion form. All in an ok experience but the place still has teething pain a year in! From the moment we walked in, we were "greeted" by asking us if we had a reservation. No hello, no welcome, just an abrasive ask. We did not, so we asked how long we would need to wait without one. The hostess replied that it would be an hour. We were told that the General Manager mentioned they were at capacity, but yet they would accept people with reservations? Then we were told everyone put their order in all at once so that is why it would take an hour to get a seat. How about being transparent and welcome your potential customers by stating, "Hi, welcome to Orion Boathouse, unfortunately we are short staffed, so if you would like to wait for a table, it may be up to an hour. You are welcome to sit at the bar (where only 2 people were occupying at the time by the way) while you wait." We asked to sit at the bar, and we were told again, they are not accepting anyone without a reservation. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We then took a look around, and there were plenty of tables inside as well as outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] One of the servers outside asked how she could help (which was welcomed, thank you BTW) We then told her unfortunately not because they were at capacity. The server shook her head as if she couldn't believe that's what we were told. The entire front of house, including the lack of proper management, is doing a complete disservice to their waitstaff and bartenders by not allowing occupancy to potential customers. Please heed my warning and read the most recent reviews, unfortunately this type of service is the norm in recent weeks. Hopefully, they will get a complete overhaul of their management and hire proper staff and train them appropriately so that they will represent this great location the right way. If not, I do not see this place surviving until the end of summer. read more

Food... I had the lake perch. It was ok. Broccolini which was served along side the perch was better, but tough to cut. Im guessing the perch is coated with a corn meal. It was just ok. No lemon slice. No starch. I left unsatisfied. read more

Stopped by on a whim midday on a Sunday with our 2 little ones. The place was empty but quickly filled up. Drinks were good. We had the pretzel and cheese dip for apps, the pretzel was good, the cheese dip was fantastic. Kids had a hamburger and chicken strips which were delicious but the strips were a bit spicy for the kids. The wife and I split the steak which was great, maybe a little overcooked. Being a lake front homeowner I'd really like to see this place make it. That said my wife and I walked there on a Sunday morning for breakfast. There were about 4 tables occupied in the restaurant and no line. We were told if we didn't have a reservation they couldn't serve us. We asked if we could make a reservation and were told no because they didn't have enough kitchen help so we were turned away. Walked over to Johnny Blacks where they gladly took our money and had a great breakfast. C'mon guys, is this anyway to stay in business??? read more

It was a beautiful summer day and we had one goal, we wanted to enjoy dinner outside by the water. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Half the tables on the patio were empty, but they refused to sit us out there.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I get that restaurants have staffing problems, but the irony of sitting us at an indoor table next to the door that led to the patio was too much. Literally on the other side of the glass was an empty table. We just got a quick little appetizer and a couple drinks and went someplace else for dinner. Burnt fish tacos ! They serve food knowing it's burnt. They are out of a lot of beers and food each time I have gone there. I won't be going back. Very disappointing and trying to get a parking spot in their tiny lot is a challenge. NOT RECOMMENDED read more

Really really bad experience. We went on a day in which is was incredibly warm out, and very humid. We specifically sat indoors because of the heat and humidity, primarily for my 1 year old niece. You would have thought the restaurant not only had no AC, but even had the heat on. We were sat right next to the window which had no shades. The sun was beating down on us, and the temperature in the restaurant was brutal. Super uncomfortable. We all had to get up and walk down to the water at one point to cool off during the long wait for our food. Next point, they were out of high chairs for my niece when we got there. It was in no way on overly busy night. There were a decent amount of guests, but there were also plenty of open tables. It was odd that they did not have a high chair for her. We sat down and waited close to 10 minutes before having our drink order taken. We ordered drinks and apps. The apps took close to 20 min to come out. They were fine. Not great, but not bad. We then placed dinner orders. I can confidently say it took close to 45 minutes to get our food. Waitress did not once come over and apologize or make a comment. Drink refills were also hard to come by. 2 of us got soups and 1 got a side salad with our dinner. You would expect those items to come out early. Those items took 45 minutes, and the rest of the entrees came out about 5 minutes after. I ordered a bowl of chili and a salad. I got a cup, not a bowl. Not a huge deal, but considering the overall experience, it just didn't help. We all could not wait to get out of there. Incredibly disappointing experience. read more
