Loved the added peppers & the Green Chili Hot was perfect! The house margaritas were pretty tasty too! They are only open four days a week. The burrito was supposed to have green chili on it, but they put on a tablespoon of red chili. The food was bland. There were no complementary chips and salsa. The food in Canon City is bad, and this restaurant was disappointing as well. I would suggest going out for fast food, or cook at home, to avoid the expense of crummy food. read more

My wife and five kids visited Ortega's in 1989 starting a long awaited family vacation. We enjoyed a wonderful meal and meeting the Ortegas. When we left, my wife forgot her purse with all our cash and traveler's checks on the seat of the booth. We did not realize this until we were 2 hours down the highway. We drove back and arrived at 10:30 at night, to find Mrs. Ortega sitting on the front porch steps holding the purse and all the cash and traveler's checks. She saved our entire family vacation. I offered her a $100 cash reward, which she so very graciously refused. We stayed in town overnight, and to say "Thank You" to the Ortega family, we took an ad in the local paper to tell the story and to publicly thank the Ortegas. For Mexican restaurants I expect certain things right when you are seated. One of the biggest is complimentary chips and salsa. I hadn't even sat down and there they were in front of us. Pretty tasty as well! Drink orders were taken less than a minute later and arrived quickly. My margarita was great! My wife is a fan of taquitos and hers were what she was looking for. My choice was a ground beef chimichanga smothered with green chile sauce! We were both pleased with our choices though we didn't know what to expect when we walked in. Have eaten here a number of times. Food decent, not great as dining options here in Cañon City are limited. First time going on Taco Tuesday'. Didn't order the taco special as they are a la cart and I wanted beans and rice. That said we ordered 2 taco plates. I was so disappointed that I'm not sure I'll ever go back. It's nice you get complimentary chips and salsa only this time the chips were cold. When we received our dinner plates we were surprised how small the portions of rice and beans were. The tacos themselves were 1/4 of the shells filled (including the lettuce) and yes the shells were cold! The food as a whole was bland and not very good. So disappointing. As stated I doubt we'll return. Limited as the dining options are here in town, there are better Mexican food restaurants. I do NOT recommend. I really enjoyed Ortega's! Their food was wonderful and their hot green chile actually had a bit of a kick. We hit them up on a Friday night and it was busy, but not too bad. They have a patio (that seemed popular), but we opted for a booth inside. To start they bring the traditional Mexican restaurant chips and salsa to start (I believe the first basket is free, then they charge for additional baskets). I liked the chips and the salsa was thin, but flavorful. I ordered the chile rellenos plate and a house margarita on the rocks with salt. The rellenos were wonderful, as was the green chile (a bit hot, not too bad). The pinto beans were very good (traditional). Overall it was a great meal. My only complaints are that it was a little slow (no biggie), but that was weird because like 3 people serviced our table. And I personally thought that the house marg at $7.25 was pricey! It wasn't that big to justify that price. That is ok, I will skip the marg and just have the food! They are only open certain days (Tues, Fri, Sat & Sun), so be sure to check before you head over. read more

Such a disappointing experience! We had high hopes for this place, but our first time trying it will be our last. We ordered to-go during a slow time when only two diners were in the restaurant. First of all, the food tasted fine--not especially good, far from great, and certainly not worth the price. My husband wanted a smothered burrito with steak fajita meat. They would not do that. They have steak fajitas but would not allow him to add the meat to his burrito. They suggested ground beef instead, but he doesn't like that and settled for just beans instead. That was $15. A large tortilla with beans, sauce, a small scoop of sour cream, and a spoonful of rice on the side was 15 bucks. Crazy! I ordered the chili relleno plate, which was supposed to come with rice and beans. It didn't. When I called to ask what could be done about it (along with the other disappointments), I overheard a lot of discussion between the person who answered the phone, the manager (who never got on the phone), and the kitchen staff. In the end, I was offered a $1 refund. Gee thanks. On top of that, I asked for an extra relleno so my husband and son could split it and see if they liked the taste. That one chili cost $6.25. I had to ask for more chips because the to-go bag was underfilled. The salsa cup was less than half full. Stingy on chips and salsa? Really? All total, we spent $50 for two adults to have mediocre meals that were missing items we wanted to have and a toddler to have a single bean and cheese soft taco. Not worth the money at all. If the manager had spoken to me and made even a small attempt at customer service--more than a one-dollar refund--I probably wouldn't have written this review (it's the first negative one I've ever written). But when a to-go customer is so disappointed that they feel the need to call in, it's a manager's job to fix the situation. My suggestions to readers: - Dine at your own risk. There are tastier, cheaper options in town with better customer service. My suggestions to the restaurant: - Lower your prices. - Allow additions to meals (like fajita beef in a burrito). - Price add-ons reasonably. - Up your customer service skills. A bigger effort in this scenario might have earned you a second try and more revenue. Instead, you lost a family of potential customers who are now actively trying to help others avoid your establishment. read more

This is the only Mexican restaurant in Fremont County that serves authentic Mexican food. If you happen to get the Mexican breakfast, they have the absolute best pancakes - they are seriously better than Waffle Wagon, Mugs or Village Inn. I got the chimichanga, which was quite good. It was smothered with the hot green chile (which really wasn't that hot), but the shell maintained its crispness. I've gotten chimi's before and usually they're so smothered that they get soggy. The pinto beans side was great. Not really refried beans like you'd expect, but still quite good. Docking one star because we got the (regular-sized) house margarita and it was $7.25 each, which seemed at least 2 or 3 bucks too expensive for 5pm on a Friday. Service was good. read more

On a recent trip to Canon City with my husband we stop by Ortega's because I really wanted Mexican. Another selling point? They have a nice patio area with misters for when it gets hot and we wanted to sit outside. We were there on a Saturday night and it was super quite - in fact we were the only table and they closed up shop a little early because of lack of business that night so you might want to call ahead and make sure they are open if you are stopping by later in the evening. However, our server was still very kind and didn't rush us so she could get out of there. I ordered fajitas to see how they compare to my favorite Canon City spot - El Caporal and there was some good and bad pieces. The good was the flavor of the meat, the fact that they used more peppers than onions and that I got all three colors of peppers, and that they gave me pinto beans. However, I prefer El Caporal just for the fact that pork is a meat option and they let me choose corn or flour tortillas. The tortillas here for flour and they were kind of crispy which isn't conducive to folding. Another good about this spot is the salsa. It has a nice kick and big chucks of tomato. A bad is that only your first basket of chips and salsa are free. Another odd thing about Ortega's is that they are now a Mexican-Italian-American restaurant. They might be interested in drawing in more folks with a menu that expands this way, but I usually find that when a place tries to focus too broadly usually the quality of all dishes fall. I will say that the other 3 people I dined with all thoroughly enjoyed their meal and Sir Nicholas said the green chile here might be his favorite in all of Colorado so it's worth a try. First visit with Westcliffe friends that recommended this restaurant. OK first of all CLEAN plus outside dining and nice wait gals. The Mexican dishes are chef created and plated and served with a smile. Current owners have been serving upscale delicious Mexican dishes for 18 EIGHTEEN years. This spot did the bare minimum to serve guests. The food is over priced and you can get a can of pinto beans 5x cheaper at the store. A hair was in my water and this could not be fixed because the waitress never came back. The same waitresses charged my meal as a more expensive one, when I brought this to her attention her solution was I just pay the more expensive unordered meal. When issues were brought up with the owner he brought up excuses even when they were dismissed through argument. Neither the manager or owner made steps to de escalate the situation. I always eat here with my family when I come to visit and it never disappoints! The food is tasty, fresh, and well priced. They also have the best margaritas. Randy, the owner, is one of the nicest people and always provides excellent service. Last time I got enchiladas with mild green chile. I don't like super spicy and this provides the perfect amount. Really wanted to like this cute little place with the comfortable booths, but why serve stale, oily chips and watery hot sauce? Not the greatest way to entice customers to come back. The food was so so - the tortillas weren't heated before they added the ingredients, so they were dry and brittle. Honestly, how hard is it to heat up a tortilla? Mixed opinions about this place from our party. The chips were cheaper and sparse for a party of 4. One of us loved the Chimichangas. I thought the tacos will very light on ingredients. The other 2 dishes were ok (fajitas and enchiladas). Service was attentive for drink orders then hard to find afterwards. The salsa is big chunks of charred tomato and water. I didn't see a onion or spice in the whole bowl. Bland! We got combo plates. Every single item was the blandest mexican food I've ever tasted, minus a fried taco. But, I don't think any of the meats had any kind of spices added. I don't like overly seasoned or spicy but this was evidently created for those seniors. The staff are friendly but doesn't make up for the poor food. Disappointed. Save your money. read more

If your hungry please don't eat here. If you just want a snack and don't mind making a donation to Ortega's than this is the place for you. However, I personally would never return to this restraraunt, I would rather go to Taco Bell, which I truly don't prefer, but I just might get enough food to hold me over for at least an hour or two. The portions at Ortega's are extremely small and just not worth spending your money. The combination plates are a joke. My husband and I ate here while passing through Canon City. We spent $23 and were still starved. We ordered 2 combination plates with a taco, burrito and enchilada. The burritos looked liked small taquitos. If you have ever had one of those than you get the picture. I kid you not, we each had a spoon of beans and rice which they could have left off our plates all the same. Where do these people get off giving you a appetizer sized meal for 10 bucks each. O.K. To start with, this place has been around forever, but the guys that have it in its current incarnation have turned it into a home away from home for us! Horrible customer service and terrible experience!! I've never been here before and never will again! The food was subpar and the waitress shyanne ignored my table the entire time. She did not offer any refills nor did she check in on us. She just took our order and dropped off the food and we never saw her again. The owner was no better, when this was brought to his attention he flipped and yelled at us!! No apologies just excuses! The manager was no help either just rude all the way around!! The manager did not do her job to at least diffuse the situation and get the owner out of our faces with his yelling. Yelling at customers is no way to be successful in the restaurant business. You want to bring people in, not chase them away. I implore you to take your business elsewhere unless you want crappy service. I would not recommend this place, save your money and go somewhere else where the food and customer service is better! Pretty horrible first time experience here.
