I had my braces done at Orthoworks and returned back to see if I could get my broken retainer fixed. I feel a bit cheated after finding out I overpaid a lot for a single upper retainer which I was charged $500 for. I was also told it would cost around $1,000 for a set. During my appointment I did inquire regarding pricing between the standard wire type and Invisalign and wasn't given a direct answer on price until after I already decided on the wire type. I understand every situation can vary but as a lower income person I'm looking for value for money. Thinking back I probably should have considered alternative options before rushing into it. read more

Their accounting department is horrible. If you have any possibility to change an orthodontist because of your work relocation or whatever, DO NOT CHOOSE OrthoWorks!!! At the beginning of the consultation, I told Dr. and receptionist that I have the possibility to move out of the city because of the work relocation. They told me that the refund process is pretty easy and nothing to worry about. Then the relocation happened. The expected treatment duration was 2 years but I only could visit Orthoworks for 6 months, 7 visits total. I called the accounting department for the refund - I got the number from the receptionist and she told me to call this number. Accounting department told me to call the office receptionist and she'll take care of the refund. This was weird but I called the receptionist then she told me to call the accounting department. I knew it. Sign. I called to tell this story and told my number of visits and reason that I need to refund to an accountant over and over again (I remember I called her three days in raw), then she finally starts processing the refund. She refused to call me back for any updates even tho she told me to call me tomorrow for details, so I had to call and email them many times. It took seven months to receive the refund. Orthoworks did an amazing job correcting my terribly misaligned teeth, especially considering they had so little room to work with. Pamela was a big help all the way through, extremely friendly, and always went the extra mile. Dr. Tomer, and Dr. Yoon were careful to explain everything fully, patient, and made sure to do things right. From the beginning they never tried to upsell, and all they way through I never felt rushed. They gave you the options and data, did things practically, and focused on doing things the right way. The whole staff was very accommodating, even when I ran late. All in all they made each visit fast, efficient, and warm. As a bonus, the view from floor 24 is pretty relaxing, too. read more

This is a very small office in the Sutter building near Union Square. Everyone is super friendly, and the prices seem fair, but the biggest downside here is it's cramped. REALLY cramped. There are like 5-6 dentists chairs in one tiny room. It felt like an assembly line. It was so cramped, it was awkward getting out of the chair after being examined. This is a review for the Richmond District SF office: I made an appointment to check out Orthoworks because I lived closeby and figured if I went with them it would be convenient to get there. However, I was not impressed with this place. Overall it felt like a business factory and was set up like one of those large hair salons with all the chairs in a row. Dr. Tomer saw me and immediately said she would need to pull out about 4 teeth, and that Invisalign was not an option. Dr. Tomer's manner was very brusque and unfriendly. It felt like she was doing me a favor. After her consulation I was led to the "negotiation" room where I felt quite a bit of pressure to make a commitment. Even after I decided to shop elsewhere, Orthoworks kept calling me and asking "Do you want to do the procedure?" It felt like one of those telemarketing calls...There was no "thank you" or "we appreciate your interest in us" of any kind. Just a call that says "Hello, this is Orthoworks. Do you want to do the braces?!" (Note: I have since then gone to another, much better orthodontist who not only told me that Invisalign was totally doable, but that at the maximum I would only need 1 tooth pulled, not 4) read more

I don't know how they got those good reviews. I went here with my friend to get consultation about braces on end of August. The first appointment went through really smooth and Dr. Shen was able to do Invisalign for both of us with tooth extractions, which made us very happy because we went couple other Otho none of them would able to use Invisalign as our treatment. So me and friend paid deposit and looking forward to start our treatment which they told us have to wait for 6weeks for the aligner to arrive. We were so happy that we got called on first week of October to get our aligners on. But when I sat on the dental chair looking at my tooth treatment picture, I didn't see any of tooth extraction plan on it, instead was tooth filling which I've already told Dr. Shen I don't want at the first consultation. But my friend's treatment plan was current. At the mean time the assistant had already put some attachments on my tooth. I stopped them and made them call Dr. Shen(who is not there at our appointment date). He apologized for his mistake on my treatment and admitted to make me new sets of aligners which I have to wait another 6 weeks or so. Fine, I waited till mid of November and I have to call them to check the status and got the answer that I have to still wait for 2 more weeks, at that time I've already paid deposit and 2 monthly payments for nothing. I talked with May asked if they would give me some discount on my treatment because of all the mass they've been done for delaying my treatment. She refused and only offer me a tooth whitening gel!(i don't know how many bucks will that cost them, but it means nothing to me) Finally, Dr.Shen called me end of November and scheduled me on Wednesday 12/9 to get started and I double checked with him to confirm the date and time through the phone.Now what, front desk called me in12/2, said Dr. Shen scheduled me on 12/8 Tuesday and the office has no orthodontist working on that day! What a service they have! I wasted 3 month on waiting and all these mess they go through. Now I'm worried about how actual my treatment outcome will be with this group! So people, really think about it before starting with them!!! read more

***Another Edit**** So five years after my braces come off, my permanent retainer breaks. The doctor recommends getting a new removable one....the billing person talks to me, they want $600 for a removable retainer. When I ask the billing person how much fixing the broken permanent retainer would be, that would also be $300-$400. I took my money across the Bay and for a mere $250 (as a new patient no less), got a new removable retainer. The new ortho's jaw hit the floor when I told her how much this office wanted for a replacement retainer and this was AFTER they got $3K from me out of pocket and $3K from my insurance. I'm extremely disappointed by this. Their work was great and I've never been so happy to have such a great smile but once they have your money, they do NOT care about you or your aftercare - just more $$$. ***** I've been meaning to write this for the last 6 months. Braces off, I have THE most amazing smile now. Seriously, I never dreamed I'd ever have straight even teeth and they look fabulous! They performed a miracle. Fixing my underbite w/o surgery and to some extent fixing my profile. I smile more now and feel a lot more confident when I speak to people because they're not looking at my big ol' gaps. Removal of braces is never fun, it hurts, it's scary but they did it pretty efficiently. My friend had me terrified as she said her removal was bloody but that didn't happen at all. The best part was their polish job to get the glue off. Dr. Truong ROCKS for that. In fact, I went to my dentist soon after and she was amazed that they did such a good polish job. So I have a removeable top retainer and a fixed bottom one. They had to repair it once but glued it back in just fine. My only gripes which don't outweigh the fact they FIXED MY HORRID GRILL are: *They charge separately for x-rays on top of all the money you throw at them for braces *No good freebies, my cousin had braces around the same time I did, her orthodonist gave her a SonicCare toothbrush when she got started and a ton of candy when she was done, I just got pack of gum :( *Their offices are scattered everywhere and only open on certain days, so when there were some emergencies (e.g. poking wire) I had to go all the way to San Bruno or Hercules. (I'm not faulting them for the poking wires, that's just a part of having braces for some folks). *I'd get different doctors a few times throughout which made me feel a bit neglected, but whatever they're doing it must go well and they must have decent communication because for the most part they were all on the same page regarding my treatment. So yep, I didn't feel too price gouged and I'm going about my business with my lovely new smile which in the end is most important :) read more

The staffs here are amazing are always cheerful. Pamela, who consulted with me during my initial visit was extremely helpful when I had doubts of getting braces. A year and a half later, my teeth are almost completely straight and my underbite is fixed without the need of surgery. This place is easily one of my favorites not only because they monitor your progress every step of the way, they are very transparent about treatment time, billing, and scheduling. I haven't been to many doctors, dentists, or any other private medical practices, but I do think Orthoworks is probably one of the best thought-of ideas in the field. They put a bunch of orthodontists together and open a bunch of offices in the Bay Area. This way appointment times can be very flexible and tailored to your busy schedule. The flexibility also means that there is high probability that you will be seen by a different orthodontist during each visit. Initially I was concerned about this but they made sure that all the doctors would have access to my file, thus any of them will know the progress of my treatment at any given time. If you are particularly attached to one of them (cough-cough Dr. Lam cough-cough), you can pick and choose your appointment to match his/her schedule, so no huge deal. Their accounting/finance department does a great job at maximizing your insurance. Their website also gives you access to your account and your appointment times, both past and future. To say they have the system down is an understatement. So with all my singing praises, why the four stars and not five? Well..., I'm not a fan of some of the doctors. I feel that some of them need a crash course in bedside (chairside?) manners. I know that I need to floss more often, but couldn't you simply tell me instead of chiding me? I began my orthodontic work with Orthoworks in January 2016 and they have made what is an uncomfortable experience as easy as possible to deal with. The team are amazing, super friendly and complete experts, always explaining the goal of the check up, how much progress is being made and are excellent at keeping you motivated even whilst you've got metal in your mouth. My treatment involves incognito (behind the teeth) braces and I have also used their Propel treatment to quicken things up and the results have already been amazing. In just 4 months I can see huge differences already. They don't mess about! Their schedules are also very accommodating, if I arrive early or late they always make sure I am seen to quickly. About 6 months ago I have decided to get braces, real ones, with the wire, and face the constant visits to the orthodontist's office. Not an easy decision when you are in your 30's, so I had to make sure I select a place that is good and affordable for me. Since the beginning I had such a great experience having my full set of braces through OrthoWorks. Definitely happy about my choice and can't wait to see this through and get the smile I so want. Dentists and all staff at OrthoWorks have been super nice and accommodating. I am always able to schedule my appointments as it fits my schedule. They are friendly and always with the nicest attitude. I have been seeing Dr Nguyen and worked with her on the proper steps regarding how to make things nicer when it comes to my teeth. She is very nice and she is easy to talk to about any options or possible solutions to deal with the braces. I am kind of excited for my monthly visits, as excited as you can be going to the orthodontist, because I know that I am in good hands and I am making great progress due to Dr Nguyen's knowledge and artistic view to help me get the smile I am looking for. I just started my treatment here to get my teeth straightened after they shifted a little in the last couple of years after I was wearing braces as a teenager. They offered me payment plans for invisalign, which makes it easier to deal with the costs and they were super friendly during all my visits so far. A friend of mine recommended Orthoworks to me and she gave me a referral coupon with which I got $150 off my treatment, which was nice. Another thing I really enjoy about Orthoworks so far is the amazing view of San Francisco that you get when you're in the dentists' chair. A wonderful place to be as the customer service alone makes it worth while. I was having an extremely difficult time finding an ortho in the city after moving here from the East Coast. I must have gone to at least a dozen places and each had a money making scheme by way of telling me that I had to take off the braces i had and put on "new age" ones or places telling me that i had to submit to a certain payment structure because their fee was so exorbitant amount of money. I finally found Ortho and explained my situation to them pointing out that I had not had any checkups in months. Instead of having me sign paper work to lock in me into a contract, Pamela (who is the best) worked on me that afternoon, changing my bands and tightening my braces. If that's a method of getting customers, well it worked and I decided to continue my treatment with the office. During my time there, I've had exceptional service. Pamela, Alisa and the rest of the staff are wonderful people who are cordial, polite, attentive, and willing to talk you through the process during treatment. I never felt as if the course the doctors chose for me was wrong. Dr. Yee is very thorough and Dr. Tomer who was my primary Doctor was wonderful. Here easy going banter made a visit to the office very enjoyable. I also felt that the front desk staff was very professional. They help me set up appointments that suited my busy schedule and never declined a slot I wanted. Lastly, special thanks to Mrs. Wong for making the financing aspect of my relationship with Ortho easy. I understood what my plan was, what goals were set for me with regard to the treatment and payment, and options to pay. Overall, I strongly recommend Ortho as a primary care provider. Okay I just got my braces off today and I'm forever smiling =D; only took a few months short of 2 years! The process of payment was easy.. like one review said, they're very instructive and they'll recommend what best for you (braces, invisilign...etc.) for me, i go to school far from home so i come back only every so often, not every month.. but the recommended visit for braces is for every month... so even with my lack of consistency due to schooling, i was able to take them off less in less than two years.. now that either implies that i've been good sticking with their regimes such as wearing my rubberbands.. or that it could be that they're just that good... which i think is the majority of the reason..they have a very good reputation, most of the people i've known who have had braces, came to this one or some other one... so this is one of the best offices out there in the city. yea, they're busy and booked but they've always found time for me, scheduling around my breaks so i really never had problems with scheduling. also, their staff especially Dr. Lam and Pamela are especially friendly and treat you as a personal patient.. even though i visit the office less often than i should, they still manage to ask me questions concerning my last visit... so the fact that they try to make everyone's visit more intimate by remembering personal tidbits is a plus.. everyone is polite and nice, no grumpy workers here. well, there shouldn't be any anyway if their goal is to make us smile =) highly recommend this place! =D read more

I did research at a few places and decided to settle on Orthoworks because of a variety of reason. 1. Positive reputation: Positive review and also recommendations from other people. I guess Yelp came to the rescue with this one...I literally read each and every single review on this thing. I wanted to know what kind of practice this was, and whether the satisfaction of the patients was held in the highest regard. After getting treatment (still am), I have to admit, this is still true to a high degree. They care about their patients a lot which speaks volumes 2. Experience and knowledge from the doctors: Ive had the opportunity to be treated by Dr. Trinh and Dr. Shen. Dr. Trinh was a blessing to this place (hes left i believe) and along with Dr. Shen, were both very meticulous about answering and helping me to whatever I need. Yes, it is a very scary process and I want to know everything going in my teeth. New technology coming out? Sure. Got a question about why they are putting this crap in between my teeth? You got it. They know what they are doing and have never crossed the line that made me feel silly. 3. Consultation: The consultation was a great process...very easy onboarding and they did not try to shove a contract down your throat. They were aggressive, but it was very in line with what I was looking for so it was merely which option I was going to go with. I felt that they were not desperate for my business and had a lot of offices going on in the bay area..that is a sign of a successful practice THESE FACTS ALONE should warrant them a 5 star. That said, there were a few things that needs to be noted...I mean, i DID post up a 4 star. 1. Assistants lack of sensitivity: My lord, sometimes they forget that they are working with the inside of my teeth. I would Highly highly recommend that they tone it down a notch and be sensitive when working on my already oversensitive teeth (teeth gets sensitive after braces are on them, new concept right? lol). There have been many occasions where the new wires were shoved into my teeth and I had to scream to tell them to chill out with the strength of their grip. Maybe thats why the doctors make the assisants do this portion...SOMEONES gotta be the bad cop. 2. Pricing Alright alright, not much of a point here, but i know that i was paying a heftier amount of dollars to my my braces done here. I know its a much higher premium, but damn it still hurts!!!! lol, geezus, lower your prices already Dr. Shen, sheesh! 3. Please refer back to point #1 about the strength of the assistant's hands lol ***Overall***: I opted to come because of the doctors and after visiting, i return mainly FOR the doctors. I got my treatment done at the Sutter office. When I first went in for the exam/consultation, I wasn't too sure if I wanted to start w/ them (I had the appointment set up at 3:30 and the kids were out of school; it was like a zoo there). However, the front staff were very welcoming and friendly and the assistants/doctors were awesome. Of course, I got my treatment done w/ OrthoWorks. At first, I thought all I could have was those painful, nerdy looking METAL braces. Yet, Dr. Lam gave me my treatment options. He said my teeth were not too severe and Invisalign would work perfect on me. He told me he would be putting some buttons on my teeth to give it a better grip & to move my teeth faster (since there were invisable, i was fine w/ them). Though Invisalign was a little more pricy than the traditional braces, my insurance paid a good portion of it so out of pocket for me was still managable. The Chinese lady that I had the consultation with was very cool. She allowed me to pay only $1000 down and the rest in installments the following year (I had an FSA account; for those whose employers offer flex account will know what I'm talking about) with NO interest. Although this office's always busy and I had to wait most of the times, it gave me the time to catch up on my magazine readings. Plus, if you don't want to go back to work on a Friday afternoon, this will be a good excuse (hehee). Nonetheless, now 16 months later, I am done with those plastic trays and wearing my retainers. I think I could have finished my treatment even sooner if I would have listened to them to wear my aligners for 22 hours a day. Regardless, my teeth are now nice and straight and I promise that I will wear my retainers every night and FOREEEEVER because I am NOT letting my teeth shift. Will I recommend this place? I met with a wonder lady named Mary at the Mission office over a year ago for a consult. She was nice and very caring and concerned. She listened me to me when I told her my fears and thoughts about getting braces. She assured me that it is ok to get braces as an adult because she had then just a few years ago. She made me feel so important and welcome at the office. Unfortunately I had to hold off for a year before getting my braces.
