Ava was our server, and she was fabulous. I ordered the sushi lunch special- any three select rolls for $11.95. I got two spicy tuna rolls and a spicy salmon roll with minimal (light) rice. A choice of soups (miso or mushroom) or salad came with it. We each got the mushroom soup, which was tasty. I also ordered a specialty roll- the Sunny, also with minimal (light) rice and hold the avocado. My friend ordered the sashimi lunch special for $11.95. The ambience is warm creating a relaxed atmosphere and there are large windows in the booth area allowing for lots of natural light. Tables are spaced nicely to allow for privacy and allows for an intimate dinner for two. As it seems hard to find good Asian food in the Charleston area that isn't thrown together and average in quality~ Osaka will not disappoint~ and they have been in business and at the same location for more than twenty years. Let me start by stating that we ate here on Christmas Eve and we knew it would be madness. We came prepared. However, it was next level madness. If you know you will be one of the ONLY restaurants open on Christmas Eve, prepare accordingly. We sat at the bar with a drink for about 15 minutes, not bad at all. Once we were seated we waited about 20 minutes for someone to come greet us. We were ready to order more drinks, apps and entrees to make it easier. Our drinks and apps arrived in about 10 minutes which was great. This is where the wheels came off. We waited almost an hour for our entrees. I ordered Chicken Pad Thai and my husband ordered General Tso Chicken. Our waitress came over three times to tell us it would be out soon. She ended up bringing us miso soup to make up for the delay. Nice gesture , but some comped drinks or our apps would have been more appropriate. Our food finally arrived after she brought the soup. Mine was a plate full of noodles with a few small pieces of chicken, barely any egg or onions or nuts. The flavor was good though. I picked around and ate the minimal good stuff. My husband's dish was absolutely delicious! Best we've had in Charleston. The waitress stopped by and asked if I needed a box. I told her no thank you and voiced my concerns. Again, no compensation was offered. We eat out a lot and don't mind waiting. However, the food and attention to detail need to make up for long wait times. read more

Osaka is tried and true, warm and wonderful. Unlike many sushi places, this one is comfortable to linger in with friends- especially at lunchtime when it tends to be less bustling. My favorite sushi for years has been a roll they make here that they call "downtown roll" but this visit I got soup and it hit the spot. I've lived on James Island for several years now and never stopped to eat here. If you read my reviews, I love sushi. Well, that was my bad. Our server Taylor was excellent, food was excellent, and atmosphere was excellent. Three home runs. Edamame was tender just like I like it. Soy and wasabi were very good. Yes, I am a soy/wasabi connoisseur, either can make or break a sushi dinner. Sushi was all fresh: yellowtail, scallop, white tuna, and stripe bass were all very good. I shared an Almond Dragon roll and Rising Phoenix roll both were excellent! Only 1 negative, the soy paper on my eel avocado roll was a bit chewy. Saki was a bit sweet for my taste but still good. Nice and hot. Prices were average or lower than most places close by. Overall an excellent experience and we will be back! read more

Unassuming little bistro tucked away in a parking lot off of Folly Road. Osaka shares the parking lot with a popular strip center full of restaurants, a grocery store and other small retailers. There is plenty of parking here so you won't have any issues securing a nearby space. We opted to sit at the bar and although they don't have a bartender , there are servers that provide excellent service if you decide to sit here . We had cocktails, Saki and appetizers and the experience was pleasant. Our server was very attentive and efficient . We tried the yellowtail jalapeño, filet mignon tataki & the Suno Mono appetizer(diced sashimi fish over cucumber with ponzu sauce , masago & scallions). Everything was delicious! My first (and last) visit to Osaka. Can't speak for their other dishes, but stay away from the Pad Thai! It was a dense lump of bland, gummy noodles. No sauce, bean sprouts, egg, green onion, or any discernible flavor. There were a small amount of soggy bits that almost passed as peanuts. I had what I thought was the worst Pad Thai ever in Beaufort the weekend before. I'd take that over this in a heartbeat. read more

We stopped in for restaurant week. We were quickly seated, but our waiter was nowhere to be found. It was quite a while before he showed up, but when he did, he was friendly. We ordered off of the restaurant week menu & got: spring rolls & pork dumplings for appetizers, the blizzard roll & general Tsos chicken for entrees & we got ice cream for dessert. The blizzard of role was absolutely delicious. The spring rolls and dumplings were tasty and the General Tso's chicken was pretty good too. The waiter boxed up my husband's food and even gave him a little extra rice in his to-go box, which was really nice. He brought out our check, but forgot to bring out our 3rd course (the ice cream). Used to go here all the time. The sushi would make my night every time and it was always a great vibe in the restaurant. Servers were always nice, as I knew them from reoccurring visits and they seemed on top of it when the place was packed. This place is seriously overpriced. Don't trust the prices you see in the Yelp menu images, cause during pandemic this place increased their prices at least 30%-50%. Their food and service is average but they charge like if they were Tao New York. Dinner for 2 you would easily spend $150 just on the food. The fact that they don't bother to claim their Yelp page says a lot, even though I have told them twice to do it so they can update their prices. It is very sad that they are so overpriced cause I would have ordered from here twice a week if they had normal prices. My advise, stay away from this place. read more

I usually sit at the sushi bar and enjoy watching the skilled chef's preparing each dish. I typically have sushi or sashimi but have tried a few cooked dishes and have enjoyed them also. After Hurricane Florence it was hard to find places open for food so we were thankful to see Osaka was one of the few restaurants with enough staff and supplies to take an order. I placed an order for takeout with tom ka gai soup, a couple sushi rolls (Out of Control & Philly rolls) and pad thai. Osaka's menu consists of Japanese, Chinese and Thai food which is pretty cool with me -- I love all 3 and this is a great compromise when my husband is craving hibachi but I may want Thai. I sent my husband out to get the food, we were told 20 minutes so he waited ~10 minutes before leaving so he would have gotten to the restaurant right on time. Unfortunately when he arrived they realized our order was given to the wrong person when picking up takeout (I feel badly for the people who didn't realize until they got home -- hope they like sushi and Thai noodles!). My husband had to wait another 15-20 minutes for our order to be made and they gave him 1 small ginger salad as an apology. While I appreciate the gesture, the food was for 2 of us so maybe 2 salads would have been nice or an appetizer to share. They also forgot to add in the sides of sauce we requested. Anyway, the food we received was decent but not outstanding. I'd return for easy takeout, but probably skip the sushi next time. The pad thai was great and I'll be curious to try their hibachi as well. read more

This was the absolute worst hibachi food I have ever eaten. Booked a reservation on a Monday because Hachiya was closed. We were disappointed when we arrived to find there were no hibachi grills and it would be served at a table but we were okay with that. The soup was good. We got steak and shrimp hibachi and you cannot convince me that the food was not frozen. I love vegetables but the onions, zucchini, and carrots were awful. I would compare it to a lean cuisine dinner for $26. The entire dish was covered in a thick teriyaki sauce and there was no ginger, mustard, or white sauce. The rice was bad as well. We've been going here for low key sushi for a while. Its just into West Ashley from James Island so very convenient for us. They renovated the interior within the last year which gave them the excuse to charge more but its still reasonably priced. Love it for take out! I'm a big fan of the spicy scallop roll and the tempura sweet potato for something a little different. Good service every time we've been there.
