My family and I Came in around 4 ish. We could sit where I wanted and was greeted shortly after. The atmosphere was inviting but the restaurant was smaller. I wanted a little bit of everything and that's what I got! I ordered crab wontons, the good time roll, and a chicken dinner bowl. My family ordered a cucumber roll with cream cheese, a dinner plate with shrimp (habachi style ), and a dinner plate with chicken (teriyaki style). The crab wontons were great! They were filled and a little sweet. It also came with a lot! The sushi roll I had wasn't my favorite but the chicken dinner bowl was YUMMMMY. So so tasty. I used a little "yum yum" that they provided and it was good but truly not needed. My family loved everything they ordered. I believe one also had a salad and said it was good just the dressing was not very gingery which they enjoyed. I definitely will Be back! I want to try some other rolls to get a solid opinion on the sushi , otherwise the dinner bowl was so tasty I could just eat that every time. read more

I've ordered takeout from Umi a handful of times now and they are a great option for takeaway Japanese. The hibachi steak with fried rice and veggies is a huge portion that I can get 2 or 3 meals out of! And it reheats so well! It's my favorite item so far. The hibachi chicken didn't have a ton of flavor, but the chicken pieces were moist and plentiful. I also wish their yum yum sauce had a little more of a spice flare, but that's just my preference. It's super easy to call and place an order over the phone. They are always very nice and super fast!! I've never actually dined in, but it's always crowded when I go in and they have plenty of tables for bigger parties. The sushi platters look beautiful and I'll definitely have to try them soon! read more

We came here for lunch on Sunday and were somewhat disappointed. It's a small local restaurant and I can see the draw being the only sushi place in the Park West community. However the food leaves a lot to be desired, the sushi is smaller than other places, good but I left hungry. My wife wasn't impressed with the rolls and the fried rice was essentially white rice with soy sauce on it. I really wanted to enjoy this place but it wasn't up to the standards we have come to expect with our sushi adventures. read more

Decidedly average Japanese-inspired restaurant in the Publix shopping center on Park West. The hibachi and teriyaki dishes are lazily prepared and overly salty and saucy. I think they expect you to drown everything in yum-yum sauce to hide the fact the protein is generally overcooked and in insufficient quantities. The sushi rolls are minuscule and prepared with subpar, barely sushi-grade fish. There are far better, more consistent Japanese-inspired restaurants in Mount Pleasant (e.g. Tokyo Bistro, Wasabi, Sushi Taro), but this place is serviceable if you are in the vicinity and need an immediate fix. This place is a must for Sunday dinner, a rainy night or anytime! We normally get it to-go and the portions are large for the noodles and hibachi. We ordered take out at UMI and the end to end process was outstanding! The phone order was taken quickly and the food was ready to pick up within the promised 15 minute window. The food was piping hot, exactly as ordered and delicious. The portion size is a great value for the price, providing ample "seconds" the next day. The interior of the restaurant and the service staff also lend themselves to a great "dine-in" experience as we have experienced in the past. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. Ordered ramen noodles where most places it's soup. It came as a stir fry with soy. When the waiter saw my face he said "You were expecting soup right ?" So based on his response this must happen often. Having a soy allergy I couldn't eat it. Waiter REFUSED to take it off of my bill stating it says stir fried noodles it only says it under the UDON. He claimed it was for both. I felt this was a scam and this place must have done this many times. read more

This place surprised us with how good it was! I ordered the hibachi chicken dinner and it was HUGE. Definitely took half it home. The veggies were cooked just right, perfect amount of seasoning on everything, and it felt like good quality ingredients. I love yum yum sauces with hibachi. My husband got the beef udon noodles and I liked his dish even more than mine. I stole several bites. The beef was super tender and the noodles were cooked perfectly. Very good for a quick lunch option and delicious hibatchi. At our table, we ordered chicken hibatchi, steak and shrimp hibatchi, and the 3 roll sushi lunch. All were very good. It is a smaller restaurant but it was cute for the size. The restaurant was only moderately busy at 1pm on a weekday, which was perfect. For 3 adults, we got a booth and the restaurant was really cute with Japanese decor. The staff was very friendly and did a great job. I would recommend this place for lunch during the week for sure. Eat in or take out - your choice. This is our go to place for eating great tasting Japanese food. We love drinking their hot green tea on a cold night. My grandson got purple all week so we treated him to chicken Udon noodles minus the veggies. He loves the gyoza appetizer with the sweet sesame sauce. We had excellent attentive service. Umi is a small Japanese restaurant in a shopping center and can easily get overlooked. But I have found it to be very consistent with good food at reasonable prices. My daughter loves the salmon lover plate. It's sushi and sashimi and is always fresh. Personally I go for the hibachi here. The serving size is extremely generous. They also have a large Togo business and I can see that would be appealing as there are not alot of tables. Really only one that can accommodate more than four people. But if you can sit down the service is always fabulous read more

I normally don't take the time to leave negative reviews, but I feel that this experience deserves to be shared. I am incredibly disappointed by both the level of service and the quality of the food. We spent $125 expecting to enjoy a special dinner celebrating one of the happiest days of our lives, and instead, this experience completely overshadowed the occasion. It's such a shame that a day we were so excited to celebrate ended with such a disappointing dinner. I cannot recommend this restaurant and unfortunately will not be returning.‍

This is specifically a review on their sushi. I've tried this place twice for takeout. I ordered sushi both times. All of the rolls I've had tasted like they sat out on a counter for an hour. They were quite bland and the textures were so off putting, I couldn't even finish the food. Trust me, I know what good sushi should look and taste like. I want to like this place because it's so close to my house. I am going to have to dine in one day there and give it one more try for sushi. I have gotten many sushi rolls here with my family, and have always enjoyed it. The Summer Roll is to die for, and the Spicy Tuna is honestly one of my favorite interpretations of the roll anywhere. Their serving sizes are huge and the staff is friendly! Don't leave food on your plate though, as the staff does not appreciate it, and you can tell. Just get a box! One or two rolls will fill you up, though, since they don't skimp on the fillings! Fresh, tasty, and quick, I would recommend Umi's any day! read more

NOT Japanese. The staff and cook are Chinese and therefore for food has a Chinese taste and flair.
