Not sure of the background story on the change, but we are very happy to taste the classic cuisine I grew up on, and it tastes exactly the same-great! It came with the traditional Japanese soup, salad, rice, noodles, and vegetables, and of course it came with the chicken. The portion was big. It was $24. The chicken was a little dry. The noodles, rice, and vegetables lacked flavor. Luckily it came with two dipping sauces. One tasted like a teriyaki sauce, the other I thought was a Yum Yum sauce but it did not taste like a Yum Yum sauce, it tasted like a mustard and soy sauce, it was delicious, so I poured that over my meal. DONT COME HERE UNLESS YOU LIKE BUGS. came to this restaurant with a party of 6, I was the first one in and they said I can wait at the bar of the rest of my party, first thing I noticed was fruit flies all over their garnishes for drinks as well as on the pitchers of water that they serve to guest. our server (Alfonso I believe) was very inattentive, we sat at a hibachi table and ordered some sushi as well. when our soy sauce cups were brought over there were dead flies in them, the server did it even notice until I called it to his attention, this place obviously has a bug problem . not to mention the overly friendly bartender who kept coming up to our table after our server did when we're clearly in the middle of a conversatio. My clients picked this spot for lunch and they ordered online. I ordered the salmon teriyaki. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked in and apparently spoke to the wrong person because he basically ignored me. When the lady server came out she greeted me and took my name and payment. Another nice lady came out and said the food would be ready soon. The food came out after about 5 more minutes and the nice lady handed me everything. They serve Hibachi and sushi. We didn't get the hibachi, as we've come to the point where the entertainment of it all has worn off and we're really going to restaurants for the flavor! But maybe another time I'll come back to try the hibachi. So we dove into the sushi. Upon entry the building seems like a small hole in the wall spot and you can tell almost immediately from the atmosphere, the patrons, the staffs friendliness, and the large groups that come in at a time that this has to be a local spot for good sushi. The cocktails weren't anything special but they do have a full bar so don't be shy asking for what you like, the staff will be cheeky and have fun talking to you! We started with a shrimp dumpling appetizer and some miso soup. The soup was average and the dumplings full of flavor, definitely recommend if that's your style. Moving into sushi, they have an extensive list of classic rolls as well as special rolls on the back. We ended up getting 8 rolls in total, 5 different classics and 2 different specials ( we doubled up on spicy scallop rolls!). The classic rolls have an amazing filling to rice ratio and the ingredients all tasted fresh! I don't have a single bad remark on any of the rolls we had. None of them were the best sushi I've ever had, but they were filled above average and flavor was also above average. I even tried a fully vegetarian squash roll and it was incredibly full and flavorful! The signature rolls are where they lost us both though. The Christmas roll was flat in flavor but the texture was great, and the rock n roll didn't quite deliver any "lobster" flavor I expected from lobster paste. So all in all stick with the classics unless something really pulls you in, but if it does hedge your expectations. The classic rolls are WAY MORE than enough to satisfy and have quite a variety. I'll look around to compare, but I think they landed another regular customer for sushi. read more

My husband and I visited Scranton for the day and decided to stop by Osaka because of the reviews. Can't say we were particularly blown away by their sushi though. Sushi quality was okay, not the best. Our orders came with soup and salad and I swear the soup container (half of a pint) was the smallest I've ever seen! Lol, like com'on! Wait time wasn't too long, about 10-15 minutes. Due to COVID-19, all staff were seen wearing masks. Hand sanitizer was provided. They encouraged we keep the menus because they will not reuse them as a precaution. There's street parking and it was free parking on Sunday when we went. They take credit cards. 5 adults and 2 children in our party. Our server, Dennis was absolutely amazing! My water was never empty, he was SO great with the boys (kids 4 and 3). Most servers treat kids like they're a bother. I went here for the first time recently and really enjoyed their sushi! Luckily they were open for in-person dining - after calling around, many places in Scranton are only doing takeout (summer 2021). My favorite was the Crazy Tuna Roll but I also enjoyed the Sakura Roll and the Volcano Roll. My partner had a Strawberry Mojito and said that was also delicious! Our server was very friendly and attentive, and my only note is that the inside ambiance/decor is a bit dated. I will definitely be back though for more sushi. read more

Horrible service. We were a large party and had to wait over 45 minutes just to get drink orders in, after we were seated AND had made reservations. We were told our business wasn't needed and that we could leave. I was celebrating my birthday with friends and family. This was a horrendous experience! I have been there plenty of times before and truly do like their food. I understand that many places are understaffed and overwhelmed. But these aren't reason enough to treat any customers the way we were treated. While their food is good, service is just as important. I will not be supporting this business ever again! read more

I hate here with 3 of my girlfriends, one of whom currently lives in Scranton. Though we made a reservation, we sat at the sushi bar since it was pretty packed. The staff was gracious and friendly. They offered to split up our checks since we'd planned on paying with 4 different debit cards. I ordered two sushi rolls, a sweet potato tempura and a Philadelphia roll. My friends ordered one of the Special Salmon rolls and the Kani salad. I don't like imitation crab, but the presentation of this salad was lovely. The crab was shredded with cucumber atop a clean, white plate. Beautiful! The sushi was fresh and presented nicely on white plates. We didn't wait too long for our food, in spite of the large amount of patrons in the restaurant. Two of us ordered dessert, red bean mochi. It was a great way to end the meal, but I've had better mochi. This was felt somewhat frozen. It was also freezing since the door was opened and closed constantly. Mind you, we were seated at the sushi bar, towards the back of the restaurant. Overall, great service, good sushi, clean restaurant, good company. Honestly the staff was very friendly, somewhat accommodating, but the food was not worth it. The "miso" soup was questionable, the rice tasted burnt with heavy pepper usage, the teriyaki sauce was water, the vegetarian sushi was good for what I got. But over all it was not worth what I paid for for the meal, and it left everyone I went with very unimpressed, and disappointed with the food over all. I really enjoy Osaka. The food is absolutely excellent and there are a ton of different options for unique rolls. The sushi and sashimi are always very fresh and well prepared. The only critique I really have about Osaka is the atmosphere. The environment could definitely use a little update. Tables are a bit wobbly and they could definitely use a fresh coat of paint but I will say that cleanliness always seems up to par. Made a reservation for a hibachi table at 7:30 PM on a Saturday and still wasn't seated until after 8:00 PM so not sure what the point of making the reservation was. Service throughout the dinner was mediocre. As for the food, the hibachi portions were HUGE. Way too much rice and too many noodles for the average person to eat in a single sitting. The meat and sauces provided were also much too salty for my liking. The only reason I'm giving three stars instead of two is because the sushi was decent and the hibachi chef was great! Slow service with a dumb waitress. - we ordered water and asked for an extra glass of water, she asked didn't I bring you water? Yes I replied. But we want another glass. A look of accusation came on the waitress face and I repeated that I want another glass, she brought my water lemon-less. When the other glasses of water had lemon. The hibachi is good and entertaining, just like in police academy. They do tend to overcooked the steak, so order it more rare than what you would normally like your steak. Came to this restaurant late on a Thursday night. The place had a few customers but was fairly quiet for the most part. We wanted to sit and experience the Hibachi entertainment since we had never been here before but we weren't offered a spot probably because there was only two of us in our party. We had a terrible table right in the aisle where people were walking in and out of the restaurant which also happened to be located right next to the bathrooms. Neither one of us had ever tried sushi before but the hotel we were staying at ensured us that this was the best restaurant in the area so we decided we had to try. We told our server that we had never tried sushi but we were feeling adventurous and so he recommended the spicy crunchy tuna roll. It was a good recommendation. We also both got hibachi. I did chicken and shrimp and the guy I was with did filet mignon and swordfish. Such a weird combination and he was less than pleased with the quality as well as quantity of the meat and fish given. I loved my dish however. Our server forgot to bring us salads before our entrees so he wrapped them up for us to take home with us after our meal. If the hotel recommended this place as the best restaurant in the area it worries me what the other restaurant are like, though the overall experience here was just fine. Came here during a recent business trip for a quick bite before leaving to head home. I came in around 11 am and took at seat at the sushi bar. Service was fast and the sushi was fresh. I ordered two rolls. The a tuna avocado roll and the Sweetheart roll. I would have gotten a two roll lunch special for $9.95 (comes with soup) but I was in the mood for something a bit more jazzy. The sweetheart roll was salmon, avocado and mango in pink soy paper and dressed with a wasabi sauce. It was pretty solid. (Note: this is not listed on their online menu but its printed on their menu inside. Perhaps there are probably other rolls offered that you can't view online?) If i remember correctly it was around $12.50. A bit overpriced for the roll itself since there was no fish on the outside and nothing special aside from the wasabi sauce and mango but it was still tasty. I'm from L.A. California and this is the first good sushi I've had in North East P.A. The fish was fresh (it's didn't smell fishy). The rice stuck together but wasn't gooey. And big plus the avocado was perfectly ripe and fresh which is a big deal. Very nice quality and on the salmon sushi you get a big portion. The price wasn't too bad either.
