My one complaint is that the communication with the office is somewhat challenging--at one point, the drop off time was changed without asking me first...which was weird, but I'm sure just a misunderstanding. And it's a bummer to have to repeat unanswered questions in email correspondence. Additionally, a simple name in the signature of an email would help the customers know with whom they are speaking. Sloppy repairs of a wooden Armoire and glass Display Case. Initial timeframe to do work was about 2 months; at the end of 6 months, still no news. After I pressed them, he brought them home in a few weeks. Neither of them were well repaired, unfinished work and after several emails and calls, he came back to fix them. Within 2 weeks of repair, the wooden Armoire was showing cracks. He came up with several excuses of needing a humidifier, floor level, etc; everything to point fingers to someone else but not his workmanship. He said the cracks are appearing in new areas and we would be charged for additional work instead of standing by his workmanship; this is happening as he did not do a good job fixing the piece in its entirety. read more

Picked up and delivered, ya for $80 each way, came by himself and couldn't even lift my sofa!. Added extra charges on for work he then didn't do, Specifically told him not to modify the structure of my couch but they did it anyway. Lie, when you confront them. My couch, which was an antique, they butchered it nailed raw pieces of wood to an antique couch looks like my kid did it. It's is a disaster, you can't even sit on the seat because your leg drop down it's so narrow!! Tried to cover it up with a seat cushion that's too big for the seat!! It was a pleasure working with Oscar, Aida, and Andrew from start to finish. They replaced caning and repaired/re-covered the seats on 4 dining chairs from the 1920s (or earlier.) In addition, they replaced a cane seat on a side chair and made a cushion for the chair from a piece of needlepoint that I had. Everything looks wonderful and is very comfortable. One of the seats was slightly off-center, and Oscar came to fix it with no problem. Excellent work by very nice people. Be sure to mention that you found them on Yelp -- there is a 10% discount. Oscar did a fantastic job in both repairing a couple of legs on our chaise, and putting screws in all four legs so that each could be removed for future moves. Oscar and co. came and picked up the piece, and took it to their shop to perform all of the work there. Oscar was very professional and clearly knew his craft. Brought in an art piece by the Mexican artist Pedro Friederberg that had been ruined by a cleaning lady who tried to polish gold leaf. In a addition, several parts of the sculpture had fallen off and needed to be reattached. Oscar did it all. He even carved a replacement to for a missing piece. I had never seen this piece before the damage. Wow! A great job. I can't tell the restored from the original. Both Oscar and Andrew were a pleasure to deal with. Because I'm on a very tight budget, I've been shopping for furniture in thrift stores and at auction (no, not every auction house is Christie's!). Naturally, these pieces are in less than perfect condition. However, earlier this summer, I really put my foot in it. I bought a Drexel high chest with sticky drawers, which I assumed was because the center drawer rails were loose, and that I could easily fix with a little wood glue. Hah! Once it was delivered, I found the issue was the front rails (where the drawer front sits), of which several were seriously warped from too much humidity over a long period. To make matters worse, some schlub had tried to "fix" this, but actually made things much worse. I was holding my head, and searching online, to see if I could find someone to fix this "bargain" without going broke. Only one company was willing to come to my place to look things over, and that was Oscar Deco. Oscar and his brother were right on time, and gave me two choices, with prices, on how the problem might be fixed. We agreed on the cheaper, and the cost of the estimate visit went toward the total repair bill. The repair took somewhat longer than originally estimated, as there was delay in getting certain parts. However, when it came back, the front rail replacement was indistinguishable from the other originals. Indeed, Oscar and his firm reproduced exactly the mahogany finish with its faux distressing - and at a very reasonable price. I now enjoy asking visitors to pick out which rail was replaced - no one can tell the difference. I should mention Oscar's son Andrew, was very good at keeping me up-to-date on developments and scheduling. I have just bought some more dirty old furniture, and I will be calling Oscar! read more

I have 2 midcentury arm chairs and a matching table that I have dragged from the UK and back and forth across the US 4 times. They had been chewed by three separate dogs, the damage from sunlight was pronounced, and for one of the armchairs if you sat in it the back literally dismantled and you would fall backwards. Thanks to Oscar they look better than they ever have. He preserved their character and lines and the finish is flawless. I also appreciate that when I asked about fixing my chest of drawers he declined the work, explaining that I could solve the problem myself with a bit of teflon tape for $20 from Amazon and showed me where and how to apply it. The process wasn't all smooth sailing. I moved while the furniture was being refinished into a building that requires an insurance certificate to even enter the building and deliver the furniture. Oscar can get one, but only for a fee. It was frustrating, and I was cross, and it showed. But these things happen and it all worked itself out in the end. The essential point, however, is that Oscar, along with his brother and son, were flawlessly polite and helpful throughout. Problems will come up. That's life. But how nice to deal with someone so creative and positive about finding a solution. read more

I have a pied a terre apartment in nyc. I live on the west coast the majority of the time. I contracted with Oscar Deco to reupholster two large club chairs, returned to CA, and hoped for the best. When I returned, I could not believe my eyes! The chairs were exquisite. The workmanship is simply perfect. The piping, which is quite intracate, was done perfectly. The work done was poor: the piping on the lateral part of the chairs, in spite of frequent reminders, was not done. The upper piping, if you want to call it so, not well done and one could see the glue all around it. Very poor job. We requested to keep the hand tied coiled springs (these were antique chairs): first we were told that they were too old and needed to be replaced (often you just need to retie them) and then they were substituted with sinuous (or zig-zag) springs which are less expensive and do not last as long as coiled hand tied springs. Restoring should be done as close to original as possible using supplies and attaching methods as the original: I am disappointed that this was not done. read more

My late Grandmother left me her once very beautiful 50+-year-old chaise lounge in badly need of loving care. I started searching for someone who could help guide me thought-out the process of getting the chaise restore to greatness. I came across Oscar Deco and read the reviews. I was surprised and pleased to read current reviews of the good works coming from Oscar Deco. From all the great reviews, high star ratings, and the professional web site I submitted an inquiry and requested a quote. I received an email from Aida and our wonderful relationship began. We communicated a lot via emails and on the phone. Aida came across as a loving and caring woman who takes much proud in everything she does and genuinely enjoys helping people. She guided me in the direction of some fabric stores to pick out the perfect fabric for my future showpiece. I finally found two difference fabrics, one texture and the other solid. I arranged a meeting with Aida at the showroom, where I met her in person along with Oscar. I felt like I was among family as Aida and myself figure out the placement on the two different fabrics and schedule pickup date and time. Once, Aida and Oscar had my poor chaise in-house they were able to assess what needed to be done. Aida kept me updated to all the internals issues of the chaise and any additional cost. The day came when Oscar delivered the chaise and as he was turning the corner on the stairs, I saw the top position and I started to tear up. He carefully brought the chaise in my living room and started to unwrap and I could not believe my eyes. He had restored my Grandmothers very old and batter chaise into an absolutely beautiful masterpiece. I am so very grateful to Aida and Oscar because they brought back a piece of my Grandmother to me in the form of a wonderful, elegant, piece of art. The sight of the chaise would have bought tears to her eyes as well. There are no words that can express fully how I am so very grateful for the amazing job Aida and Oscar has done. I needed to reupholster my love seat ,which was originally custom made and had some specific trimmings and curves not typically found in a love seat, so someone had provided me a list of places on Yelp. The people here are super responsive and have everything in order from sending you a proposal to Certificate of Insurance (COI) if your building requires this. This company does not provide fabrics but has a list of fabric options for you to peruse. This job typically takes 4-5 weeks and they take before and after pictures. I think our job was finished in 3 weeks and our chair looked exactly the same as it did when it was originally made 30 years ago. I was truly impressed with the workmanship and would go back for the next piece of furniture that I need to fix. read more

Not only is Aida lovely and gracious, but she is also quite knowledgeable about period furniture and its restoration. I found Oscar on Yelp and based on the positive comments I decided to have my sectional sofa reupholstered by him. I was to supply my own fabric. Upon my initial meeting with his son and eventually Oscar i was pretty comfortable that they would do a great reupholstery job. Unfortunately, that was not the case. After the sofa was delivered I noticed that all the cushions had a filler material surrounding the foam in order to fill out the sofa material. The original foam had no such filler and apparently they either made the replacement too small or cut the fabric for the cushions too large and thus had to add filler. Whatever the case it was not done properly and you could see gaps where the filler was added. This was a result of poor workmanship. There was also a problem with the end cushion. One side of my sofa has no end and the cushion kept sliding off. Originally, my sofa had Velcro underneath that would hold the cushion in place. Oscar's workers failed to put the Velcro and the slipping was caused by their carelessness not me. When we discussed these issues Oscar assured me not to worry everything would be taken care of. He was very busy at the time and said he would call me when things quieted down a bit. A few months passed and apparently he had forgotten to call me. We made arrangements to have the end cushion done first. He changed the foam and added Velcro to the bottom and all went well. He needed to redo the other three cushions but I was going in for surgery and asked him to wait but when I called him a few weeks later his worker was going away and wouldn't be back until after the holiday's. With the terrible winter weather I waited until Spring to give him a call. We finally were able to set up a mutual date for the three cushions to be redone. He did the work very quickly however after he left when we sat on the cushions they felt hard as a brick. I sent him a note telling him this and received a response that they couldn't understand because the foam was the same one they used for the end piece when clearly it was not. My 8 year old granddaughter sat on it and wanted to know why it felt like she was sitting on a brick. They also said in the note that they could not be responsible for any other problems with the sofa and made it sound like I was the problem instead of the poor workmanship. A word of advice...pay attention to your workers. Oscar might be a wonderful master refinisher but unfortunately the workers who redid my sofa are not. read more

One month later I purchased a bedroom dresser that I wanted to convert to a sideboard for a dining room. Oscar made two doors where the drawers were to match the existing doors,they look exactly the same! He also lacquered it from a medium brown wood to white. He is a true professional and craftsman!! I have a family heirloom that used to be a beautiful piece of furniture, a round end-table with three ornate legs and a central, cylindrical storage section that rotates like a lazy susan. I remember it being lovely when I was a kid visiting my grandparents' house, but years of kids, pets, spills, and misuse had left the top horribly gouged, corrosion of some kind on the wooden panels covering the central section, and one of the legs broken clean off. I brought it to Oscar Deco hoping they could fix the leg and make it at least semi-decent looking. I was ASTOUNDED when I saw the finished product. Gobsmacked--no exaggeration. The scratches on top of the table were gone; one gouge had been an eighth of an inch deep--I couldn't find it. The table is refinished and beautiful. The disgusting corrosion/discoloration on the side panels is gone and the panels are gorgeous. The very delicate inlay, which I thought was a lost cause, looks like it did when I first saw it, or better, maybe-- it's been 60 years. The central cyllinder rotates freely, without grinding or resistance. Oscar did a fantastic, unbelievable job. I cannot praise his work enough. The guy is an artist. Aida, who handles the administrative and financial stuff was friendly, gracious, businesslike, and did NOT overpromise when I brought the table in. I unreservedly offer a strongly enthusiastic recommendation. read more
