Roaming the streets of Galway trying to find a place to eat for our group of 4. Tried other places, no luck. When we left our apartment, I mapped us to Oscar's as I had read it was a great seafood restaurant. I popped in the door, no reservation, asked about a table. The front person, said, we just had a cancellation, the table is yours! Sweet, great timing. It was busy and buzzing in the restaurant, great vibe! Our server, Ilya, was on us quickly offering g drinks etc. A couple glasses of wine and a couple beers, both were OK. We ordered a couple specials and recommended dishes on the menu. Every dish was amazing. Cooked perfectly, sauces and seasoning was perfect! All aspects of the meal was delicious, cleaned our plates. Very creative seasoning, African influences, unique spices, etc. I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant if you can get in. read more

Phenomenal restaurant in Galway! I wanted to treat my daughter to a special seafood dinner in Galway and a friend recommended this place. I am so glad they did! First, service was top-notch. We didn't have to wait for anything and our server was pleasant, helpful, and made great suggestions. I started off with oysters. They were the best I have ever had! Better than Maine, NYC, CT or even New Orleans. These blew me away. For dinner we ordered off of the specials menu. My daughter had the Sea Bass with sweet potato and Zhoug. I had the Grilled Aran Lemon Sole. Both were delicate, delicious and expertly prepared. My daughter ordered dessert and a cappuccino, and I had a coffee. This was the only place in all of Ireland that served real cream for the coffee when asked. No place else had cream, so I was in heaven. Dinner at Oscar's in the West End of Galway was a memorable meal. For my wife, she said it was the best meal in Ireland so far. We ordered drinks to start, my wife has taken to Port wine. I had a Guinness in the bottle, not as good as on draft. The feature wine more than beer and the beer choices are limited. My starter was a grilled sea trout with roasted potato. Excellent in every way. The fish was delicious and the preparation was superb. We both chose a special entree: she enjoyed the grilled Aran plaice while I selected the seabass. They were both superb. Dessert was also the special, apple and blueberry crumble. It was just great. Our server was Ilija. Hevhas worked there for 14 years having come from Serbia. He was a fantastic server. Unbelievable! Actually, unbelievable! My husband had a vegan dish and we usually make fun of them because we tell him it will taste like cardboard, the chickpeas, stew was so aromatic and delicious. I had the grilled sea troutt and it was beyond. The cherry on top was the beefsteak tostadas. I've never had anything like that and I live in North America, where tostadas are a thing! The food looked better than it tastes and the red flag should've been the empty salt shakers at each table. We ordered the crab dip (very small portion, and it tasted like imitation crab meat), the steak was overcooked with little flavor; the side of veggies tasted like they cooked them in butter and oil (no hint of salt). The drink was horrible and I'm not one to send things back, but I'm not sure how a lemon drop martini ends up tasting like watered down lemonade. The oysters were okay and they make a good home made mignonette, but there was no hot sauce or horseradish provided. Maybe it's an Irish thing, but room temperature oysters are off-putting. The service was terrible, but our waitress was likely working the bar as well. She definitely forgot about us for a solid 20 minutes after she took our plates and verified that we didn't want anything else. I do not recommend this place. We literally ran into Oscars during a rain storm one evening. Having no transportation beyond our feet (we enjoy walking cities and towns to experience them) we were soaked to the bone. But the staff gracious sat us at our reserved table and handed us a few hand towels to notionally dry ourselves. We ordered the hake with mussels, scallops and the trio of crème brûlée. It was all absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this bistro if you're in Galway and looking for a nice mealtime experience. The venue was packed. This place was great. While I thought it would be one of those "small plate" joints, the entrees were so generous that we ended up with too much food. It wasn't bad, per se, but it was not warm and friendly. Luckily, however, we were seated next to a very warm and friendly bunch of older gentleman. Absolutely fantastic! I took other yelpers advise and called for a reservation. I call about 45 min prior to showing up and it was perfect. The restaurant is very small, so it fills up quickly. Our reservation was for 815pm and by 830pm people were being turned away. Our server was Siobhan and she was absolutely delightful! Extremely friendly and knowledgeable about everything. It is a very limited menu....I posted the our menu. I felt the prices were extremely reasonable. Main courses €22-€28 starters €8-€15 wines from €22-€80 plus. we didn't do the super expensive. We opted for a €31 Sauvignon blanc from France. We started with the mixed ceviche and it was absolutely tasty and refreshing. It was topped with what I think was jasmine shaved ice! we also had the garlic prawns that melted in your mouth. For main courses we had the Plaice in a light lemon butter sauce Aran Hake. Both were amazing! The Plaice had a very full flavor of lemon and although the fish is slightly more dense than the hake it was perfection. The Aran Hake was amazing also, very light satisfying. We ended our meal with an amazing dessert. Definitely something we have never tried and we basically licked the plate. Salted caramel and Baileys carrageenan pudding with Baily toffee cookie, ice cream and berries. It was amazing! The pudding is made from a seaweed and apparently Irish folk eat it to keep from getting sick. All of the flavors combined gave it a salty sweet flavor. When we walked in we say all of the awards for Oscars and Michelin awards. Siobhan explained that although Oscars is not a Michelin rated restaurant bc it's not white cloth, and fancy, it is in the Michelin guide. When in Galway check this place out then walk through the Latin square for a night of music and entertainment. read more

Amazing restaurant just across the bridge from Quay Street. This area is super popular and it completely transforms at night to a really hip outdoor dining area. We got here right around the time they opened, so there was no wait. But by the time we left things were packed! We ordered a half dozen of raw oysters, half dozen of steamed oysters, the monkfish with mussels, and the lobster spaghetti. Everything was fantastic! My favorite was probably the monkfish, it was very tender and went really well with the sauce. Highly recommend coming here for dinner when you're in Galway! read more

Super cute little restaurant in the side streets of Galway! We enjoyed the Calamari and Prawns for the appetizers. I think one woud have been enough for us to share. My husband ordered the prime aged sirloin steak. Steak seems to be cooked a little differently than what we're used to in California, so I think next time he'd stick to seafood. For my main course, I had one of the specials of the day, which was Marty's mussels steamed with white wine, cream and garlic butter, with Monk Fish. The Fish was so soft and buttery, very delicious! If you're trying to find the menu on their website and are not sure whether to dine there because you can't find the menu, hesitate no further - you must. Oscars' menu switches up daily depending on what the catch of the day is. The standard menu does have chicken breast, salmon, steak, and mussels in cream sauce amongst the entrees, so there will be something for everyone. The starting bread was some sourdough and hummus. The hummus had a bit of a sea flavor to it - or perhaps I was just imagining things. I got a quarter dozen of oysters - i.e. three - and they were the best of both worlds of US east coast and west coast oysters - the plump creaminess of west coast oysters, with the brininess of east coast. I decided to get the monkfish special that came with mussels and wild leeks. By god, it was delicious. The most delightful part of the dish was that it came with a little crock of steamed vegetables - peas, zucchini, broccoli - it was just the touch of vegetal freshness I needed after days of heavy and rich stews. The monkfish (which has a tougher texture akin to lobster tail) was bathed in a light cream sauce, with a generous amount of leek and little asparagus straws that was sized like spaghetti. Never in a million years did I think I'd ever say this, but the vegetables truly completed the dish. 10/10 would recommend. Note that Oscars is closed on Sundays, so plan accordingly. read more

My friend and I had a hankering for seafood and Oscar's popped up as some of the best Galway has to offer on more that just a few sites. We decided to give it a try and weren't disappointed! The space is small and cozy with seafaring decorations and low lighting. You can tell it's a favorite of tourists but does a good job of not feeling touristy at all. Our server was great and we took all of her recommendations for ordering. We started off with a dozen of some of the freshest oysters I've ever had. I think they may have been plucked from the bay a few hours prior. I could have had a dozen more! We followed the oysters with the prawns in lemon and butter, the cod and the monkfish specials. All were top notch with the monkfish being my favorite (after the oysters). I appreciated the wine list as it was full of crisp whites perfect for seafood and wasn't too overwhelming either. The scene is 1920s Paris glam, with some French jazz music pumped in tastefully to complement the artsy bright-colored interior. Think Midnight in Paris: billowing fabric flowing over the ceiling, metalworks candeholders and shabby chic wooden furniture. We walked in and I liked it already. Our waitress was very friendly and advised us appropriately when we inquired about portion sizes. There is a printed menu, but the real gems are carefully chalked onto a board that is set up next to you once you sit down. I really enjoyed this manner of maintaining practicality without sacrificing the casual upscale atmosphere; sometimes it can be a real pain when a restaurant write specials on one chalkboard not visible to the entire dining room! We started with some oysters and the seafood croquettes. Both were fantastic. Very fresh with wonderful complements of flavors. Our main (which we split) was a scallop and mussel medley: succulent, fresh and flavorful. I loved the white wine sauce that accompanied the mussels, as it was a subtle fusion of savory, bitter and creamy all at once. We split a half bottle of wine and finished with a fabulous chocolate pudding dessert. When we arrived in Galway we were looking for some seafood in a trendy atmosphere and wanted something a little different to the classic pub scene we'd been juggling for a few days. We traveled to Ireland for our 30 th anniversary. We missed tour connecting flight due to airline delay. Our luggage did not make it to our destination for a couple of days. We weren't happy at all. I was cold with no warm clothes. We happened upon Oscar's Seafood Bistro in Galway for dinner. We were not in good spirits. However, Sasha opened up 30 min early just for us. I must say, by the end of our meal. We forgot all about the issues with the airline and our luggage. The food was a little different and incredible. The oysters were great obviously due to locality. The squid ink tacos were something I have t had before. The squid was so tender like sashimi. The way it was cooked was on point. I had never had squid that tender before. The scallops. We got reservations at Oscar's for 6:30 on a Friday night in June. The meal was good - both the salmon ceviche and the scallops were a bit on the rubbery side, but everything tasted fine overall. We'd been looking forward to the meringue dessert based on the recommendation of friends of ours, and had said as much to the server when we sat down. As soon as they cleared our dinner plates just before 8PM, however, they dropped the check off without asking if we'd like anything else. When we said that we were hoping to have dessert, they told us that our table was required for another party coming in at 8:00 and we had to pay and leave. When we protested, they said that since our reservations were for 6PM, we needed to make way for the other party. After reminding them that our reservation was actually for 6:30, and that nothing have ever been said about a time limit, they said "OK, you can have the table until half past 8" and they let us stay and have dessert. Even though they let us stay, it felt begrudged. The experience of being pressured to leave the restaurant immediately after finishing our entrees left a sour tase in our mouth for the whole evening. We likely won't be going back to Oscar's on our next trip to Galway. read more
