Let's start with the good--food was the win--flavorful across the board, especially the tostada trio special. But everything else kind of missed the mark... The portions are tiny for the price. We literally had to order another appetizer after dinner because we were still hungry, which is never a great sign. Service was also not good at all. Slow, inattentive, and just not what you'd expect for a place like this. And my martini... small, warm, and just not good. That alone was disappointing. Also, be prepared--it is extremely loud. came here a few days ago and upon entrance, the restaurant was a lot smaller than i anticipated, but the intimate ambiance and cozy decor made up for it. we started the night off with an order of guac and chips, as well as two mocktails. i had a blueberry ginger drink & my friend had a sunshine paloma i think? either way, very tasty& refreshing juices, however for no liquor, i do think my drink was sort of steep in price ($12). i really liked the guac & enjoyed the crunch from the sunflower seeds. the chicken enchiladas were a bit underwhelming & i would not order them again, but it's not my usual order so i wasn't so crazy about it anyways. i ordered it so i could just try something new. the carne asada tacos however were high in flavor & the pineapple was a perfect addition. the staff was kind enough to make me consider returning once more to try their sizzling fajitas or mahi mahi tacos. read more

I recently learned of Oso Felipe on social media and thought it seemed like a cool spot. Then, I noticed that they were having a Mexican spirits tasting event, which sounded like a fun adventure and a great time to visit. We took a rideshare out there and were dropped off in front of the massive restaurant. We walked inside and were in awe of its trendy, modern Mexican vibe. The main floor offered a dining room and large bar, but we were told to head downstairs for the event. The sprawling basement offered two party rooms, the larger of which included a bar and was where we were sitting. These rooms seemed underdone and unfinished in comparison to the well-decorated upstairs, which might have been because the restaurant was on the newer side. The tasting was to include six samples and some light bites for an affordable $28. In front of each place setting were six shot glasses, holding two tequilas, two sotols, and two mezcals. Each spirit had been poured to be a mere taste and barely reached a fourth of the way up the glass. The staff leading the event was very fun and engaging, but took us through the six shots so quickly that we were done in moments. However, since the pours were so small, we were all willing to drink more. Per someone's request, the staff also wound up providing small tastings of three Mexican spirit-infused cocktails to enjoy while we continued to talk; we had all made the trip and did not want to cut the night short when we could be mingling with others. The beverage-accompanying snacks were hit or miss. The Yucca "Tots" were actually fried balls of the starch stuffed with melted cheese. They were delicious! The Salmon Tostadas were round tortilla chips topped with tequila-cured fish, roasted corn, and avocado cream, which combined into something resembling a ceviche. Those were decent and offered a variety of textures, but I thought they were missing some sort of flavor kick. Lastly, the Tortilla Chips were perfectly crisp, but very heavily salted. They served with a "spicy salsa verde" that seemed more like an avocado crema, of which I was not a fan, as well as a red salsa that was deliciously tangy and smokey. After the event wound down, we went back to the main floor bar to enjoy a full cocktail. My spicy mezcal margarita was made with their house bottle of Del Maguey Vida Mezcal and was fantastic. Plus, the bartender was a delight. We also discovered that there was a third floor that was much more of a lounge with couches, another bar, a photo booth and other items that created a sleeker, more celebratory atmosphere. Oso Felipe was such an unique and creative spot that offered festive vibes and bold drinks. Their food menu was vast, and I would like to go back to try some of their other items that I would be more likely to select myself. read more

Greeted pleasantly when we arrived and sat immediately. It was their first brunch service since opening which was a surprise. I ordered the Oso Paloma and my daughter the Oso Margarita. Kinda worked out because neither of us liked our drinks so we switched. I thought the Paloma was too sweet, maybe the soda? The Margarita was flavorful and light. For the the table we ordered Chips and Salsa and Beef Shank Tacos. No issues with the chips, salted perfectly. Both sauces were a bit bland, tasty but needed a little kick. Taco's we're just okay. The beef extremely flavorful, tortillas mid and fell apart quickly. Our server recommended the Breakfast Chimichanga, which I couldn't remember the last time I had a chimichanga so I ordered. Best thing I had that day. Definitely stuffed and big. Packed with flavor and a little kick. Would definitely get again. Overall, our service was exceptional with no issues. I loved everything about Oso Felipe from start to finish. The ambiance, the friendly staff, the delicious food, and the drinks were all top notch. The resultant itself is beautiful. There's even a cute outdoor patio area for the nice weather. Everything was clean and still felt very new. The staff was extremely kind and personable. We were never rushed and anything we needed, they were more than willing to take care of us. This would be a great place to come for happy hour or with a group. As far as food and drink go, they lived up to my expectations. We ordered a variety of apps to share to start. My favorite was the beet salad. It was light, fresh, and very flavorful. The guac was also a stand out. I had the shrimp fajitas for my meal and they were also delicious. The shrimp were well seasoned and cooked perfectly. It was also a nice potion. Great new spot off walnut street. They have a full bar, happy hour specials and a private room downstairs. We came on a Friday night and got a small table by the bar. The menu has a great cocktail list. I went with the Paloma. I think they have more drink specials on the weekends. The menu has lots to pick from, fajitas, tacos, enchiladas etc. The gauc was super fresh and came with a huge basket of chips. I could have just eaten that for dinner! So I ended up here because I was hungry and headed to another place. I stopped and recognized it from an Instagram post. When I walked inside, I was struck by the beautiful ambiance. It was busy (since they are trending) but it's also huge inside with 2 floors of dining and bars on each floor. After surveying the bottom floor, I decided to be seated at the bar upstairs. My just was kind and patient. I had a seat at the bar upstairs got comfortable and ordered my drink and food. Now I chose a seat near the right end of the bar (if you're facing it) almost where the wait staff was picking up drink orders. Now there was a chair there which baffled me because my question was "why put a chair for someone to sit in a space that staff has to access?" In any case I wasn't sitting there so I didn't put to much thought into it. That is until a little later on when more people came, wanted me to move further down (towards the start area) so they could have more room to my left. This was about 45 mins into the time I had been there, and it was getting busier. Honestly it annoyed me. Secondly the fajitas I ordered were good but the rice was lukewarm, on the brink of cold and didn't taste like it had much seasoning. As it boasted to have on the menu. The manager, Alex, and the host did ask for my input and did offer to make things more comfortable for me. However I declined a comp drink because it wasn't anything that a staff member had done. I felt that the organization of the bar is something that should definitely be worked on in terms of accessible seating that won't interfere with staff.pickup of drinks. I was told that staff didn't access that area often and it's fine if someone is there but throughout the evening I saw staff stack serving trays there as well as pick up drinks. Returned for brunch after almost a year from our first visit (dinner that time) and Oso Felipe seems to have really hit its stride! If you haven't been in a minute don't let the months-old reviews deter you, give this place another chance (and if you haven't been, give it a try). The service was great (shout out to Jazmyn who was attentive and friendly), food was well-portioned, well-seasoned, and well-cooked, drinks were well-mixed (they offer an assortment of traditional Mexican cocktails and some inspired by the classics), and the vibe/ambience remained chill but cozy. The space was open but some tables were pretty close together (especially the 2 tops). We had the chips and salsa, picadillo enchiladas, and chicken fajitas. Everything came out pretty quickly and tasted fresh. The picadillo enchiladas were super flavorful. Portions were filling enough for us. Prices were typical of Montclair. Yelp let me down on this one. Pineapple Express, from the same chef, is a big let down. I'm a foodie and the reviews here made it out to seem like an expensive version of Jose Tejas. Far from it. I wish I had gone earlier. The atmosphere is lovely. Pretty quiet for a big place like this. No crushing soundtrack like Mehrimoto. Honestly the interior reminds me of restaurants in Mexico City (which are excellent). On odd days it is nearly empty. Service is decent. The list of mezcals is stellar for NJ. Some rarer stuff like Pal'Alma or Flor del Desierto Cascabel Snake Pechuga. The food is higher end than I expected. I enjoyed the pork chop, tacos, margaritas, steak (albeit too pricey), and the chips and salsa are very good. I would rank it equal or better to Bitol or Nomada if you like this albeit with a more interesting menu. It's become our new go to in town for a quick dinner with drinks. read more

We don't understand the negative reviews Oso Felipe has gotten. We just had brunch and enjoyed it. The tamales were nicely done with a lot of great flavor. The guacamole and chips were solid. We also ordered the mahi mahi tacos and were very happy with them. I feel like I have been disappointed with tacos that we have gotten at other Mexican places recently so I was happy to get well constructed, nicely portioned and tasty tacos. For the money I thought the portions were more than fair. Service was very attentive. We would definitely go back. But the acoustics are very poor and hard to hear our conversation without shouting. Food was uneven in taste and presentation. Very cold guac - was taken out of the fridge? The Paloma and margarita were light and not very cold. Ordered an iron bound original cider and was glad for that. Beans and rice were flat. Need some hot sauce and seasonings. Enjoyed chille relleno and chicken tacos. The papas Fritos was ok and small portion. Would try again to see if was an off night. I hope they work things out and will stay open. While we have been waiting for well over a decade for this place to get filled with another interesting Montclair restaurant, we left feeling rather disappointed in the service, food and ambiance. The lackluster service maybe reflects a recent crackdown on immigration by the administration. The service staff upstairs seems that they weren't working according to any particular system; with many asides from staff trying to figure out who received what dish and missed appetizers. We ended up waiting more than 10 minutes for our table which is not overly normal in Montclair and says more about patron/schedule management than it does about expectations. I'll let the 10m slide but do expect to wait for a table. The food itself was interesting but lackluster. The veggie tacos had very little going for them - suppose to be 'wild' mushrooms but looks to me like Acme button mushrooms, sautéed with a little store-bought mole. The burger though ordered medium (I know), came to the table seared but blue. There are plenty of places in town that have acceptable and varied Mexican food. Sadly Oso Felipe isn't one of them. The ambiance and environment was, well, a little loud. Peering through the windows all these years, we hoped that the coziness of the old place was maintained. They would do well do put some dampers on the ceiling and/or walls to help with the noise levels. read more

Review for Thursday Happy Hour-4:30pm. It was very quiet, which we liked because we came to talk and have a bite. Sat in the bar at a table. Server was wonderful. The frozen margarita was delicious. Chips and Salsa were outstanding...came with creamy red and green salsas. They were not hot spicy, you can ask for hot if you want. We ordered a chicken sandwich from the special menu and a quesadilla from the regular menu. The place itself has a solid vibe, though it's more "cool kids hang out" than "cozy date spot," but that could be because we were seated right near the bar. The chips and guac were the stars of the show for sure. The chips were warm and crisp and not too salty. They held up well to the guac, which was clearly fresh and delicious. The meals were a different story. I ordered the chicken morita enchiladas with the red sauce on the side (need to control my own spice level for health reasons) and no cilantro (tastes soapy). My food came with cilantro on the refried beans and sauce all over the enchiladas. Another person in our party of 4 also requested no cilantro but it was on her beans too. We requested fixes and it was taken care of, but my new enchiladas then came out without crema. I want to be clear that the wait staff were all quite kind and attentive. Our waitress offered me chips and salsa while I waited for my entrée to come back out, which I declined but it was appreciated. I only took one bite of the refried beans because they just didn't look particularly appetizing and did not taste great. And the enchiladas themselves were also quite disappointing. The cheese was heavy and greasy, and the chicken wasn't particularly juicy or tender. The whole thing was quite under-seasoned, and it was clear that the enchilada sauce was intended to do a lot of the work. Just because I don't like heavy spice, doesn't mean I don't enjoy well-seasoned food! There was also a super tiny scoop of pico de gallo on the plate, making it seem more like a garnish. Of the three other people that I was with, two also got enchiladas and one got beef fajitas. None of us were particularly impressed. We had planned to check out the downstairs Agave level after our meal because we were considering it as a venue for an upcoming event. Unfortunately, the elevator was totally not working, which was a problem because I am a wheelchair user. Of course, tech issues are often beyond the control of staff, and the people helping us were extremely nice and apologetic, but it didn't really inspire confidence that the elevator just wasn't running (supposedly due to cold weather?) when the place has only been open for a month. The ambiance and vibe are spot-on, the team did a great job with the interior. My husband and I sat at the bar on a very busy night and had some tasty tacos, guac, and a quesadilla. Everything packed a flavor punch and very satisfying. We can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu! The drinks were also very good, so happy to have a great margarita spot close by. Wow Wow WOW fantastic is the word! I can't explain how much I LOVE this place!! The ambiance is so rustic chic and made me feel really indulged in the true and authentic Mexican culture! My friends may call me a lil crazy but I really do want to swim in their salsa and take a nice bathtub soak in the guacamole! And the chips were wonderfully salted. The drinks are pretty cool. My entree was super good and the seasoning was truly authentic! I know that because I took a salsa class in Mexico and I was told I was a natural! But let me tell you. This review is entirely about the food - we ordered takeout so I cannot speak to the ambience or the service. The food was delivered very quickly, so it did not sit. We ordered shrimp fajitas, which only come with one side, so we had to pay an extra $9 for beans, total of $38 (not including delivery, tax etc). I don't mind paying for premium food, but this was not premium food. There were 5 shrimp and they were undercooked. The rice was simultaneously undercooked in spots and overcooked in others. I had to throw the tortilla away because they were like shoe leather. The peppers were mush and the onions were crunchy and burnt. There was not enough lettuce or tomato to accompany the dish. But really the worst part was that the entire meal had zero flavor. It was under salted and under seasoned. Really disappointed because I wanted this place to be great. I'm hoping this was a one-off, but it was a pretty epic fail. read more

We had guacamole, tuna tostada, yellow fin tuna, hamburger, mahi tacos, chicken tacos, passion fruit margaritas. If I had to nitpick, I wish they would have chosen a more premium part of the tuna for the tostada. My serving had the blood line of the tuna, which is typically discarded. Looking at the menu was super excited to try, but sadly did not even meet expectations. First the food. Before anyone cleared the table we had the appetizer and small plates all over the small table. When you have customers paying a higher price point for entrees, I expect the food to be fired in a timely manner and have the plates cleared from the first course is extremely important especially when at a small table. (the guy who took the order for the chips and salsa asked if they ever made it to the table when we said no he replied "do you still want them". That was the worst response i have ever heard, it should have been i apologize for that let me send them out anyways with no charge. I wish the story ended here. I had ordered the papas fritas to come with our entrees but halfway into our mains they never came, when i told the server she owned up and completely forgot to put in the item! I was really hoping we'd like this place with all the buzz, but we had such a disappointing meal and experience. To start, despite our reservation we had to wait standing in a crowded nook by the bar for 15 minutes. When we were seated, they crammed 5 of us at a small table for 4 and we waited another 15-20 minutes for water. We had to get up and hunt down a waiter to help us, so when he came we took advantage of the opportunity and got our order in for drinks, appetizers and our entrees. We waited another 20 minutes and I flagged down someone from the wait staff to see if our drinks were gonna show up. They arrived with the appetizers about 5 minutes later, and as you would expect, the food then came out as shortly after and there with no room on our little table, with the dirty plates from 5 of us and appetizers. I honestly would forgive most of this if the food made up for it, but the chicken fajita I ordered and the enchilada my wife had were below average and not even close to what I would expect from a higher end Mexican restaurant at this price level. The others we were with were also disappointed in our meal. To be fair, the decor and atmosphere are very nice, and the place is still relatively new, but I don't think we'll be returning any time soon. Bummer - I really wanted a great local Mexican place.
