As most other reviewers have mentioned, the lunch special is an excellent option if you're in the area. The menu consists of your choice of a first & second course along with red or white wine and sparkling or still water. Coffee and dessert can be added for a minimal cost. The menu choices show good variety and the quality is decent. I had the penne with ragu to start and the meatballs with polenta to follow. My wife had the spaghetti pomodoro and the big salad. My pasta was good, albeit a bit bland while the meatballs & polenta were excellent. My wife's portion of pasta was huge & she also felt slightly bland while her salad came out pretty big - more than could be finished in her case. The house white was very good actually and we both had a strong cup of coffee to help with digestion. A couple notes: the salad comes with tuna on it; it was fine with us but those with fish allergies (or who just don't like it) may want to steer clear. Also when paying, since we just did the special, you just go to the desk, tell them how many you had & if you added anything else on then pay there. No bill to be brought by your server. This place has amazing food. We waited a bit and the host was super busy. He bused tables, took orders, delivered food, and seated everyone. Works so hard. The food did not disappoint. It is huge portions so if you get a set meal you can definitely share. Good atmosphere and great food. Definitely a place locals go (they shake hands with the host to get a better place in the line) but lots of tourists go too. I got the pork rib with potatoes. Delicious! The fat on it was amazing. My friend got the Pesci meal (fish set menu) and the portions were so big we were able to share it as well. So delicious every course. They had a really good Tuscan sampler deal with a starter, ribbolita, paparadelle, bistec, and dessert for €35, but I couldn't eat that much. We started with a 1/2L of house red (chianti) for €6.50. Water was €2. They give you bread, but it wasn't really worth the stomach space. The two of us shared two dishes and a vegetable. - Pizza Mediterranea: thin crust but on the crispy side. The brush was whatever, but the sausage and buffalo mozzarella were really good - Trofie: the menu said zucchini flowers with the caveat that there may be a seasonal substitution. It turned out to be cherry tomatoes, which was fine. It came with a few head on small shrimp. The flavor of the pasta was pretty good, and it had a good al dente texture - Steamed spinach: simple, served with lemon, and I added some salt from the table. I know - not very exciting, but I needed something green and healthy. All together, it was around €34 for the two of us. A lovely authentic Osteria near the famous Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy. So glad we tried this place before we left Florence. We made reservations on the same day (and there was a full house on Tuesday night.) I would recommend you call in advance if it is a long walk form your hotel. The only slight hiccup in the night was our waitress. She seemed a bit miserable due to a head cold and didn't put the order in for our focaccia - so it wound up being our carb dessert:) To their credit they apologized and took it off our bill. We ordered the asparagus appetizer, a bottle of wine from Fruilano region, penne pomodoro, and a ham & mushroom pizza. All were simple but some of the best we had in Florence. This place was kind of found on a whim, because the day as well as several days prior had been spent walking a ton, and we simply didn't want to walk that much more to get dinner. Staying near Milano Centrale, it was decided to seek out Italian pizza, that wasn't too far from the hotel; judging books by covers, I decided with Osteria dei Centopoveri, because honestly, the pictures of the place were appealing to me. They're a very easy walk from Milano Centrale, maybe 7-10 minutes tops. They appear to be located a little bit off of the main tourist areas, since you have to walk down some quiet narrow streets to get to it. Upon entering, and if you see photos of the place online, it's almost like three different restaurants, because they have three distinct dining areas. But the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, and not too cramped or crowded, which I appreciated. The pizzas are reasonably priced for pretty large-portioned personal sizes. Honestly, one pizza is pretty good for two people, or one really hungry person. I ordered one with eggplant, mozzarella and parmesan, and it was more than enough food for just myself, but I still ate it all anyway. It was delicious all the way down to the crust, and even the dough has a fresh and good flavor. The centers tend to be a little soggy, but it's my understanding that the thinness is very much an Italian style. Overall, not to diminish the quality, but it was no revelation having pizza in Italy for the first time. It was in fact delicious and tasted of great quality, but isn't wasn't the same experience like trying pasta in Italy for the first time. I really wanted to like this place more than three stars, but I can't get over the fact that the service was slow. And it's not like an American vs. Europe service speed debate, but when I see tables seated after me getting their food way before I get mine, then I begin to object. The pizza is good, the atmosphere is nice, and the price is fine. But on my visit, they were slower than the European standards I have to remind myself to accept, and that's what takes a 4 star down to a 3, in my opinion. read more

I generally do not post on yelp but I felt compelled to review the restaurant after my experience here. The food is fresh and very flavorful. The wait for the food was quite short and the wait staff was very friendly. We asked for a seafood antipasti which is not on the menu. The staff not only accommodated our request, they exceeded our expectations, bringing out multiple platters of delicious seafood. Reasonably priced at €10 for a two course lunch, including wine, water, service and coperto (cover - bread, napkins, silverware, etc.), this osteria (it is not spelled "ostaria", just like pizzeria is not spelled "pizzaria") and pizzeria is one of many value options near train station Santa Maria Novella in Florence. There are better and worse, but the food and service were pretty good and the price excellent. The restaurant is large and our group of six were quickly seated even though they were pretty busy. Five adults ordered off of the fixed price menu and the lone, very hungry child ordered a Margherita pizza, what else. Four of us had the tortellini panna prosciutto con piselli (ham, cream, and peas) for our first course and one had the pasta alla Sorrentina. The tortellini were mass produced, but very good, and plentiful served in a creamy, garlicky sauce with diced ham and peas. The sauce was so good that I ignored my wife's pleas and performed "scarpetta", cleaning my plate with the fresh, local bread and happily consuming it. The pasta all Sorrentina did not look all that appetizing, but what could we expect in Florence. There was no sauce, only a small amount of crushed tomato and a little mozzarella mixed with a lot of store-bought pasta. The very hungry child did not receive his pizza until after our second courses were served, but he was very patient nonetheless. A pizza lover, he was not impressed by his pizza although it looked good from where I was sitting, so 3/4 of it went uneaten. Our main courses were the Caprese salad, frittata de patate (potato omelette), and scallopine ai funghi. The Caprese was decent with fresh fior di latte (cow's milk), not mozzarella di bufala (made with water buffalo milk in the region of Campania) as you would get in and around the Island of Capri, its namesake. The dish's signature fresh basil leaves were notably missing and replaced with lettuce, something you would never see in Southern Italy, but it was not bad at all. The frittata di patate was pretty good, although my wife did not think it was good as her friend Giovanna (from Naples) mother's version. Giovanna had the scallopine, which she said was "so-so", coming in a thick, creamy mushroom sauce along with green beans on the side. It looked good, but I did not taste it, so I cannot corroborate her evaluation. We received a liter of local red wine for the five of us, five bottles of water (we had been walking in the 100 degree heat for four hours), and five after-meal espressos with the bill coming to a very reasonable €60.50 for six people, a relative bargain in Florence. The menu is basic, nothing fancy, but the food good and the value exceptional. They are quite a bit pricier for dinner, in the €25 to €40 range per person, so lunch is a major value. My only complaints were: 1) the child did not get his pizza as fast as he should have; 2) the sparsely adorned pasta alla Sorrentina; and 3) the lack of basil on the Caprese Salad, otherwise we were quite pleased with our meal. Bleh. I did not like the food here. I am not sure what happened, but I was less than thrilled with my entire meal and service. However, Bob loved his meal so take that for what it is worth. For some reason, my ravioli tasted like there was mint or something in there? But not quite mint. You know when you buy produce and it starts to rot and then you smell it and it has the sweet decaying smell? Now picture that in taste form, mixed with ricotta cheese. This was the first meal in Italy where I did not finish my entire plate. Now, Bob got a pasta dish that had a meat sauce that he really enjoyed. But mine was just awful. I never know what to do with reviews like this. Where my own personal experience was not good, but the person that I was eating with enjoyed their meal... Just the best. Wonderful, lively atmosphere, great food, great wine, and SO affordable! The cover charge for sitting is only $1,50, which was less than many places we went to. We actually ate here 3 times during our stay of two weeks (ah! But really, it was our favorite place we found!). First time we had the special of the day, sea bass, and trofie with prawns (amazing), next we tried their polenta with boar sauce (terrific), and finally we had their tortelloni with porchinis (so huge and fresh they were like meat!), as well as Ossobuco. Great flavors and leave room for desert - specifically the lemon sorbet (if they aren't already sold out of it)! My airbnb is next door to this restaurant. It was recommended by my host and it was the first meal I had when I arrived in Florence. So to confirm whether it was actually as good as I thought, I brought friends with me the next time we went and a few found the place on their own. The house red was divine, smooth, and only 3 euros! I don't know what the plates are called in Italian but the house special with steak and porcini mushrooms was melt in your mouth delicious, and the polenta with boar was full of flavor. The first night I was there, they were giving out complimentary lemon sorbets to restaurant guests. When I went back a few nights later, I asked for the same desert and they said they were sold out! The waiter described that they had just sold out because it's homemade and there was only a certain amount for the day. You can tell it is homemade - the lemon flavor is a nice balance of sweet and tart and the sorbet is overall refreshing. They are quite busy but as friendly as they get even with all the hustle and bustle. So delicious! read more

What a wonderful find! My wife and I stumbled on this restaurant which is nicely decorated and has excellent local food. The restaurant is roomy and not cramped like many other restaurants in the area. We seemed to be the only Americans in the restaurant; however, we were warmly greeted and treated like everyone else. My wife and I had two different chicken dishes which were delicious and inexpensive. One was 12 Euro and the other was 9. I also had a Tuscan vegetable soup which was obviously freshly made with local vegetables. Add dessert, wine and water and the bill was less than 40 euro. The waitress even even gave us Vin Santo and almond biscotti, gratis. Although we did not have seafood, many other customers did and this also seemed very fresh. We have one more night in Florence and I think we will be going back tomorrow. I would definitely recommend having dinner here. read more
