2/5 stars I want to preface this by saying that our server was kind and genuinely trying -- this review is not about him. He was simply not equipped to be on that floor, and that falls entirely on management. I booked a reservation specifically requesting upstairs seating. When we arrived, we were taken to a table directly beside the open entrance door in the middle of a rainy, 55-degree evening. When I pointed out my reservation request, we were told they couldn't accommodate it. I then asked to simply be moved away from the door and was told we'd have to wait. We left to grab a bottle of wine, returned, and were eventually seated upstairs, so it was possible all along. The space itself was a letdown. The decor reads as cheap and afterthought, fake florals and the kind of aesthetic you'd expect somewhere charging a fraction of the price. Service was visibly undertrained. Our server forgot to open our wine, returned with a corkscrew when asked, and then struggled with the bottle for a solid ten minutes. We offered to help. He was never guided on chilling a customer-brought bottle. Polite kid, clearly thrown into the deep end. The food was the most disappointing part for a restaurant marketing itself as made-from-scratch Italian. The whipped ricotta, crab gnocchi, and veal Siciliana all arrived surprisingly fast, which tells you something. Presentation on every dish was careless. Nothing felt considered. I'd put the food at a 4/10. Philadelphia has excellent Italian. This isn't it. read more

Unfortunately, our experience was wildly underwhelming for a number of reasons. First, when we arrived, several minutes before our reservation, we were told other reservations were in front of us and couldn't be seated until they left. We were left to wait on the sidewalk a bit confused as to why they had allowed us to make a reservation if they were so booked up. Second, we had viewed the menu online prior to choosing it and saw several items we were interested in trying. However, the menu was not the same online as it was in person. The items we had been excited to try were not options. Third, we were told about the specials and then several minutes later, told all the specials were sold out already. Our reservation was for 6:45pm so it seemed odd they were already out of those. Fourth, the items were tried were below average. The flatbread had ingredients on it that were not listed and the pasta dish I ordered had no flavor. It was allegedly scampi yet the key ingredients for the scampi were missing. Furthermore, the seafood tasted like it was just reheated frozen fish. We will not be coming back or recommending this restaurant. read more

Not to be confused with its similarly named restaurant on North Broad, Osteria Ama is a delicious dinner spot steps away from Rittenhouse. It's also BYOB with no cork fee, so perfect to bring a bottle (or two) to enjoy with your meal. The restaurant's interior felt warm and inviting, with the faux fireplace playing in the back on TV and vines and lights drooped from the ceiling. There's an upstairs floor with customers, but my party of three were seated promptly at the entry floor. I can imagine being seated near the balcony would ideal for summertime meals when windows open. Service was excellent. Our waiter helped open our wine and took our order promptly, checking in frequently to clear the table, answer questions, and explain the Restaurant Week dinner menu. I felt that the $45 meal was a superb value! There were a lot of options available, so the only element was that it took time to commit on which dish per course. The Food Breakdown: Crab Bites (5/5) - They look small in the photo, but the bites were actually well-sized and filling because of their density. The fry coating didn't overpower the crab taste, and I always love a good chipotle aioli to complement. Lots of it on the plate as well as on top of the three you get per order. (Complementary bread service also comes with appetizers.) Ribeye Steak Flatbread (4/5) - My partner got this as her starter, but I enjoyed the quarter I tried from the dish. There's a good amount of beef, and the toppings made for a filling appetizer. The flatbread was baked well; I didn't feel that the crust was too dense or overdone. Chicken Parmigiana (4.5/5) - Nothing beats a giant slab of lightly-pounded, breaded chicken filet. Tasty and went well with the sauce. If portion size and value is your dining game, you can't really beat this. If nothing else, the accompanying pasta was just okay (but it's meant to be eaten with the parm after all). Spaghetti Fra Diavolo (5/5) - Wow! It's spicy, delicious, and the seafood was delicious. Courtesy of a few bites from my partner's entree, I loved the cook on the calamari. The spicy marinara base was also generous, without being too thick or overpowering. Tiramisu (5/5) - I'll admit, I was incredibly full by this point. But I did thoroughly enjoy the flavors. The coffee taste blended well and made for a solid dessert. While Philly has no shortage of Italian restaurants to visit, Osteria Ama made for a surprisingly pleasant visit. It boasts a more modern interior, but the hospitality still felt closer to a vintage friendly service. read more

Osteria Ama is the perfect date night spot! It provided the ambiance, decor and warm welcome from the staff. It was just we needed to kick off our weekend. We had a reservation for 5:00 but were slightly behind due to traffic on 95. I called the restaurant and the woman who picked up didn't even hesitate when I asked for an additional 15 minutes. It was nice of them to allow us to push back the time. Our waiter was quite pleasant and also funny. The staff made sure our glasses of water were filled to the top at all times. As a reminder, this restaurant is BYOB. To start, we ordered the arancini. Super tasty and just enough to satisfy two people. We split the third piece in half. The restaurant provides warm bread with an olive oil concoction. Delicious! My eggplant parmigiana was absolutely insane! It comes with two thick slices of eggplant perfectly breaded, and smothered with cheese and sauce. I could only eat a small portion of it so I had them box up the rest and it look me 2 days to eat it! The pasta on the side was a little bland, but I didn't mind. I added some salt and pepper to taste. The views from the second floor of Osteria Ama must be lovely, so I'll be sure to book my reservation for upstairs next time. I shared the chicken parm rose and the grilled artichokes with a friend, both were good! Didn't blow my mind, but definitely good dishes. My two other friends shared a Caesar salad with chicken which was tasty. The service was not great. I had to ask several times in order to get a waiter to open my bottle of wine, and they were rude upon asking. They continued to ask to clear our plates before we were finished eating. Ambiance was nice, but nothing special. Overall, good place for a BYOB dinner if you're not expecting anything fancy. read more

They did a great job at getting our appetizers and entrées served to us in a very timely manner. The presentation of our meals were perfect. So why only 3 stars. I feel the sauces need a bit more flavor and that the portions could be bigger. I had the lobster Ravioli and I order it with scallops. 3 nice sized scallops that were cooked perfectly, the Ravioli was very tasty but I was not full after I completed my meal. I was left wanting more. The sauce was good but in my opinion I would have liked the flavor to have been more powerful. We liked our experience and we would go here again if we are in the area. I had a solo lunch here and would rate it as a 3.5 star experience - not bad, not great either. I often tend to round up, but with all the wonderful Italian options in Philly, I'm rounding down to 3 stars for this review. This is a two-storeyed place but only the first floor was in use when I visited. A single server was managing the whole floor - he was super efficient and made sure no table was unattended for too long, but it also meant that there was a general sense of rush and urgency which doesn't lend itself to a relaxed meal. I ordered the risotto al limone which was a lemon-y risotto dish with shrimps and capers and topped with aragula. I was served a single bread roll with olive oil while I waited. The bread was nice and warm, I must say. The risotto arrived quite promptly. It was smaller than I expected. It tasted fine, but the limon flavor dominated the dish. There was no seafood flavor from the shrimps and the shrimps were completely tasteless - what a disappointment. For a $27 dish, I had expected a better portion or at least better tasting shrimps. I'd give this place another try if I were in the area again, but I wouldn't repeat this dish for sure. read more

I went here during Ramadan, we made reservations to sit upstairs, however the upstairs was full. Downstairs was unbelievably crowded! We felt like we were sitting on top of other guests. There's one bathroom on the first floor. A gentleman was waiting in line in front of me. Used the restroom and "forget" to flush the toilet and put the seat down. It was very busy so our waiter wasn't as attentive. What I can say is the food is good. We did enjoy our pastas. I would probably come back at the very least, do a take out order. read more

Came to Osteria Ama for Philly CCD restaurant week and has an awesome time. I've walked by this place a number of times and finally was about to try. Our waiter was very cool. Graciously walked through the menu, taught a little Italian, attentive, and just overall pleasant to talk to. Food was pretty food. Selected Aranchini and the Crab Meat Capellini for the lunch courses. Capellini was flavorful with a little bit of a sweet finish. Really enjoyed this dish. This was my first and last time going to this restaurant completely from the rude service my date and I received. Our reservation was July 2 at 730pm. I arrived first and was seated by the wonderful Anissa to wait a couple minutes and then my date joined me. When I sat down, the rude male waiter hurried to take the wine glasses saying, "You don't need these since you don't have wine..." and I didn't know it was BYOB. We waited over 20 minutes while watching one of the male waiters only focus on every other table, but ours. I stopped him to see if he would help us with the menu and he was snapped on me saying, "What do you want to eat?!" It startled me and I didn't know what I wanted because I had never been there. I was scared to talk to him again so I called Anissa over to help and she was THE SWEETEST! She calmly explained each of the best dishes to try in each category on the menu and we ended up telling her our order to then tell the rude waiter to send to the kitchen. We only asked her for her until we left and I personally thanked her for saving the night for us. Note: It is unfortunate that this could also be perceived as a racial discrimination incident especially in these times as we were the only patrons that were Black and we observed how wonderful the rude male waiter's customer service was with all the other tables with Caucasian patrons. read more

4.5 stars Came on the last night of Restaurant Week and had a really great dinner date for two here. The yelp reviews were (per usual) pretty negative so I didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. No issues with the service - we got the crab bites, whipped ricotta, seafood risotto and the shrimp gnocci. Our server brought out a different dish initially but when we double-checked he immediately went back to get the seafood risotto for us. He encouraged us to keep the dish we didn't order on our plates (because we could only have two on the table and he would have to take the dish itself back - cuz of the RW menu), which was super kind of him. The risotto and the crab bites were our favorites. It's definitely tight and pretty loud, but I'd most certainly come back. read more

Loved checking out Osteria Ama! I walk by it all the time and didn't realize what I've been missing. I had a reservation for 2 at 7:30pm on a Saturday. Even though we had a reservation, we waited 15-20 minutes to be seated. Quite a few other groups were waiting in the entryway to be seated. We were seated upstairs where it was less chaotic and the ambiance was great! For starters, we got the Crab Bites and Calamari. We didn't realize the Calamari was served with Shrimp so that was a fun surprise. We loved both apps, but would suggest the Crab Bites if you had to pick one. For my entree, I ordered the Risotto Porcini. It was fabulous and rich. The portion was large so I took leftovers home :) Can't wait to return and try more of the menu. I was really excited to dine at Osteria Ama. I came in with my husband with a reservation. At first, we were seated at a corner table, which was quite a squeeze. Fortunately, we were re-seated, and the host found a better table for us, which I really appreciate as we plan on ordering extra for the night (another couple refused to be seated there after it was offered to them, too). At that point, we were still having a good time, but what ruined the night for us was one male server who was very condescending and rude. First, when we got seated at the bigger table, he approached us and asked if it was only the two of us, as the table is for 4 - he scoffed when we said it was just us. I let it go because I could see how busy the restaurant was that night, and maybe the host seated us at a spot previously reserved for some other people. But again, we were seated there - we didn't specifically ask for that. When one of the staff members went to give us water, my husband asked who to give our food orders to, he said it will be another staff member. We asked so we know who to approach or give our orders once we're ready. When this male server went to our table, he asked if we were ready, and when we said not yet, he argued that we said we're ready to the other staff member. Like, why are we starting an argument whether we're ready or not to order? When we tried to explain that we didn't say we were ready yet, he then walked away dismissively. That was weird, and we were taken aback. This restaurant is BYOB, so we brought some bottles which were previously opened but corked by a different restaurant. Now, I know this might not be the norm, as you usually bring an unopened bottle to BYOBs, but that's just the norm - not the rule in Pennsylvania. We specifically brought a very good quality white and a red, which are really good wines to go with what we planned to order. But since our bottle is corked, it was hard to open it with our bare hands. So we requested a corkscrew for the bottle. This guy pointed at our bottle and said, "that's bad", went to get it and said a couple more comments that were inaudible while opening the bottle. My husband finally said that he didn't have to give a lot of comments. He then walked away again before taking our order. The night got super awkward from there. My husband and I were going back and forth, thinking if we should just leave because things don't feel right. We ended up staying because we already ordered, and I didn't want to cause a fuss. I just wanted a hot meal and to get out of there as soon as we're done. We also didn't open the red wine we brought, as we just felt done with the weird atmosphere. The food is good, that's why I can't give it the lowest (1 star). But that's the only good thing I can say about this whole experience. Food is good, but don't expect good service. Another thing I didn't want to be sensitive about, but noticed the whole time we were there - was how this server was not only rude to us, but also to all the other POC customers that night that he served. First let me say I live in an area where there are italian restaurants on every corner. Have also, been to Italy for some amazing food so my bar is set pretty high. Whenever, we are in Philly we search out italian restaurants to try. This restaurant was close to Hotel and was a cute small establishment. Unfortunately, that and the delicious crusty bread was all that it had going for it. Had a reservation took awhile to be seated as it seemed there was no assigned host/hostess, as host was our waiter. Food was dropped off and our waiter might as well have been MIA as the guy was running around which made my head spin. Food was mediocre at best and nothing outstanding other than the delicious warm crusty bread. The whole dining experience was 3 hours, we figured an hour a course which is ridiculous. Food was very bland and disappointing, very small portions. Disappointing because I've been here before and the food is genuinely great. Showed up on time with a reservation, stood second in line at the hostess stand for 15-20 minutes with no acknowledgment. We finally got sat downstairs, right next to the kitchen door in the corner, not the upstairs table we reserved. Waited another 15+ minutes at the table with no water, wine glasses, or acknowledgment. Someone finally came by, and was trying to help us, but we were already put off by this point, and decided to get up and leave. If they're having this much trouble, I can't even imagine how long the food would've taken. I get that it was a busy graduation weekend. But acknowledge people, and at least pretend the reservation system works. Was a very frustrating experience when we were just trying to enjoy a nice dinner out. Osteria Ama what a lovely dining experience. We had a reservation which was much needed for a weekend night. It is BYOB which I didn't know on arrival but ran to a liquor store quick and grabbed some wine for my wife and I. We started with the crab bites which were packed with flavor. Great crisp on the outside and the aioli was a perfect addition. Do I wish it came with 1-2 more for the price sure but the quality was excellent. The complimentary bruschetta was excellent I'm usually not a huge bruschetta guy but this was great super fresh tasting with not too much of that straight tomato taste. Good bread consistency. Absolutely loved I could get a small Caesar salad to go along with my meal, I really enjoyed it good amount of dressing which I like personally. Tortellini Primavera was my entree, I was very happy with my choice the tortellini just held the sauce in little pockets that would explode in your mouth. Didn't skimp on the mushrooms and the sweet peas really added depth to the flavor of the dish. My wife had the Chicken Parmigiana Rose which was huge and super flavorful, chicken had a great crisp without being dried out, pounded to a great thickness in my opinion. The sauce was also a favorite. Our baby really enjoyed the chicken and sauce as well. Speaking of the little one the staff was incredible with us, she was teething pretty bad as a 8 month old and the staff brought out a napkin with ice inside for her to chew on and were very nice about her being loud for parts of dinner. Staff was great all around. The place is super cute would've loved to check out the upstairs but with the stroller they had a spot downstairs for us. Great spot for a date or family dinner. A friend and I went on a Friday for lunch (made a reservation). We went for restaurant week - so many good options! We sat on the ground floor near the window which was really scenic (lots of fake plants inside gave it a nice cozy vibe). The server brought us 2 huge hot rolls and olive oil to start. The rolls literally steamed as we opened them and were soft inside and crispy outside. I got the artichoke to start and they kindly did not use truffle oil. I got the penne vodka pasta without prosciutto. I really appreciated they accommodated my requests. We got an espresso to finish our meal. Easy to walk past this charming little restaurant but the sidewalk chalkboard caught my attention. I went with the Blackened Swordfish special w/crab meat over spinach. Fish was extremely well prepared with a nice spice to the crust. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the friendly service provided by Angela. One slight critique; the dining room was a bit warmer than I would have liked which limits how long you might stay. We are strictly gluten-free due to celiac disease and had one of the most stressful dining experiences we've ever had. We ordered a pasta dish that was confirmed to be gluten-free. Halfway through eating, we double-checked with our server because it tasted like regular pasta. She realized the chef had made it with gluten pasta. She was sincerely apologetic, had the dish remade with gluten-free pasta to go, and even comped a dessert. She handled the situation with genuine care and professionalism. When the bill came, it still included the $30 pasta dish and the $3 gluten-free upcharge. We asked for those charges to be removed, as my boyfriend will now deal with severe stomach issues and migraines for the next week because of the chef's error. He wasn't able to enjoy the dining experience at all. Our server understood and took the bill away to correct it. Unfortunately, everything went downhill once the manager (who we later learned is also an owner) got involved. The manager came to our table a few moments later with the bill and immediately began berating us with accusatory questions. She never once apologized. She treated the situation as if it were a simple mix-up, like we received scallops instead of crab, rather than a serious medical mistake that will leave my boyfriend sick for days, missing work, and in significant pain. She questioned how much of the dish he had eaten and implied that because he ate half, we should still pay. That logic completely ignores the fact that we trusted the restaurant's assurance that it was gluten-free. She also completely threw our wonderful server under the bus, blaming her for the negligence. However, the bill clearly showed the $3 gluten-free up charge. The kitchen made the error, not the server. The dish wasn't even delivered by our server. When we said we wouldn't pay for the contaminated dish, the manager became combative and said, "How can you look at yourself in the mirror? I support my kids with the profits from this restaurant." Honestly, I can look in the mirror just fine. My boyfriend is the one who will be suffering because the kitchen served gluten to someone with celiac disease. She then defensively added that "cross-contamination is always a risk," as if it were our fault, despite the fact that he ate half a dish of full gluten pasta. A situation far beyond cross contamination. She stormed off mid-conversation and returned later with a corrected bill. There was still no apology, no accountability, no empathy. We paid, tipped our server, and left feeling shaken, disrespected, and disgusted. If you have celiac disease or any serious dietary restriction, avoid this restaurant. The manager's attitude toward a clear medical mistake was dismissive, unprofessional, and completely lacking compassion. She cared more about a $30 charge than a guest's health and safety. Came here for my sister's graduation dinner and had the best experience. We had the prefix menu which featured a choice of salad, brushes for the table, and your choice of entree. The food was SO good and the staff is amazing. The owners are so sweet and they own 2 other osteria restaurants in the area. The restaurant is 2 floors and kinda small but its nice and intimate. Would definitely recommend any of their restaurants but definitely the Chestnut location! read more

The crab bites were covered in too much sauce. The pizza was cardboard. The gnocchi was okay, interesting flavors. I thought just thought it would be a white sauce, not a dark sauce. Food is delicious but I will never return after she screwed us over and honestly ruined our rehearsal dinner. This is after we had an in person overview of what the set up would be and the we arrived to half of the expected space. Waiters could not walk through with food unless everyone was seated. A very good experience at this cute little BYOB in Rittenhouse. The decor is modern with Italian flair. It was welcoming. It was a little cold from the front door and cold air coming out of the vents. Apparently the heater was broke. By the time we left we were freezing! It took a little away from the experience because the food got cold quickly. My friend and I went for lunch during restaurant week. For $20, the meal was excellent! The artichoke appetizer was delicious! The artichokes were easy to chew in a lemon sauce that had just the right amount of citrus flavor. I used my bread to get the most of the sauce! The apple and beet salad was fresh with a light dressing that brought the flavors together. The vodka penne was delicious with a light, flavorful sauce that paired well with the penne. The pasta and crab was also delicious! The sauce was also light with plenty of nice sized pieces of crab that were perfectly cooked. The portions are a good size for lunch. We opted out of dessert because we were full. The service was quick but not rushed. It would be perfect for lunch in a work day. Our server Zoila was amazing-warm, friendly and helpful. Please do not go here unless you want the worst Italian food possible and bad service. I had a 7:30 reservation for 6 people, we arrive and are told they overbooked. We get sat at 8:40 (insane). Starving at this point we order a bunch of apps. The "burrata with tomato salad" was a hard piece of mozzarella on top of what tasted like ragu jar tomato sauce. Honestly, I don't think I have anything bad to say. But I also don't really have anything good to say about the meal. The service was good and the vibes are nice, but the food itself was very forgettable. All of our dishes were perfectly okay. The portions were pretty solid and the prices are reasonable. If you're looking for a reliable, unpretentious meal then I think this place is a good choice. I personally like to be a little more wowed when dining out so I probably won't be coming back here. read more

We went here for restaurant week lunch yesterday and really enjoyed our meals! We loved the atmosphere and decor of the restaurant as well. The restaurant week lunch special includes 2 courses. We started with the bruschetta and Caesar salad for our appetizer courses. The bruschetta was extremely tasty and had large mozzarella on top. My Caesar salad was good as well, however I didn't like the roasted nuts that were added in. For our lunch courses, we had the burgers, prosciutto sandwich, and the crab capellini. I was a little surprised to see the burgers and sandwiches weren't served with anything at all. All of us enjoyed our dishes and they were good portion sizes. We were visiting Philadelphia last week and being a foodie, we read about this restaurant. We went on a Wed nite. The exterior is fine but interior is a mix of dusty, plastic flowers hanging from the ceiling. We're were greeted nicely by a hostess wearing a sweatshirt and seated. Also, there is no alcohol. BYOB. WEIRD. my husband ordered veal scallopini and I ordered lobster ravioli. We split an appetizer of a salad with melon & prosciutto. When our entree arrived, my husband's was a big flat pile, w/ sauce heaped on top. It was ok, sauce was good, meanwhile my lobster ravioli looked like green slop on a plate. It was awful. I'm not picky but this turned my stomach. It had a bad fish smell. The lobster ravioli were actually a purée mess inside the ravioli, omg.. felt like eating baby food.. no one came to check on us. I managed to find 3 shrimp and that was it. SO DISAPPOINTING! Definitely NO EVER going back. read more
