I went to Bella Trattoria many years ago and vividly remember the creamy pasta to this day. It was my top Italian restaurant at the time. Sadly I had forgotten what it was called until today as we were in the area and were in the mood for Italian so we followed Google Maps here. I didn't know Bella was the same restaurant that I had been to all those years ago until I saw the outside of the Trattoria. But the twist was that the sign told us to enter through the restaurant next door, the Osteria. Compared to the Trattoria which offered a more intimate setting, Osteria had a bigger open space with a bar and pool table. It had a more casual and livelier vibe. Even without reservation, we were seated fairly quick. We shared the Polenta di Bella for antipasta, Nero di seppia gnocchi and Cotoletta di pollo as entrees. Eveyrthing was delicious especially the chicken cutlet. As the night went on, the staff treated us to some samplings of the Bruschetta Ca' Pummarola and Panna cotta. It was a lovely gesture and we greatly appreciated it. My second visit to Bella definitely lived up to the memories from my first visit all those years ago. It remains as one of my top Italian restaurants in the Bay. read more

Came here with a friend for happy hour and I can't stop thinking about the bread with the tomato dipping oil - I want to come back for a jar of this. We ordered off the happy hour menu and shared everything, and I'm so impressed by the flavor of each dish. We ordered the warm spinach salad, which was slightly sweet, but warm and crunchy, I couldn't stop eating it. We also ordered the bruschetta, the polenta and the meatballs. Came here for a leisurely dinner before my red eye flight out of sfo. The staff was so great with helping me store my luggage! The service set the precedent for the whole meal too- our waitress allowed us to try three different bottles of wine before selecting the one we want to purchase. They also provide complimentary bread with a pepper oil and a bite of bruschetta (might've been part of the pre set menu). The food was excellent. They were offering a pre set menu deal for 50 dollars which was hard to pass up! Their pasta is homemade and the osso buco is a must try! Capped our night off with some amaro and an espresso martini. One of the most underrated spots in the Richmond. It's a great place to get delicious pasta while having a nice cocktail. I've been here 20+ times and I do not get tired of it. Love the Nzalata Romana to start, then my favorites include the Pasta Norcina, Maccarune ca Vodka, Amatriciana, and the Cotoletta di Pollo. The pizzas are great too, but I order the pastas more. They even can do the pasta tossed in the well of a giant wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano. It's kitschy, but I still love it. Tip: It's a slight upcharge, but definitely ask for balsamic vinegar and oil with the bread to start. Delicious! read more

This place turned out to be an unexpectedly perfect venue for one of those memorable lunches that seem somewhat timeless. I never think about Italian in this inner Clement area because there's so much Asian going on here. But we needed something that suited a more lingering schedule which is anathema to the Chinese, and somehow a bit less healthy, for which certain areas of Italy can deliver no problem. The main restaurant next door, Bella Trattoria, doesn't do lunch but this Osteria venue is kind of a next door annex that opens early for lunch on certain days. Delicious! Love the food, the vibes, the ambiance, and service! We went pretty late at 9pm and didn't have to wait to get seated. They immediately served us with their in house bread and EVOO + sun dried tomato dip. This was delicious. We then got our pastas. The pastas are so good. This is one of the top, affordable Italian restaurants in SF. We finished the meal with tiramisu and the special touch of crunch at the top was a delight. You should bookmark this place if you plan on heading to the DeYoung Museum and don't want to eat in the museum cafeteria again. It's a reasonable walking distance and they serve solid Italian food. We had party of three and ordered the gnocchi, spaghetti with pork jowl, and lasagna. For dessert, we had dark chocolate and cappuccino gelato and a pineapple sorbet. They have great service, and the ambience is very comfortable. Their prices are quite reasonable for their quality. I've come here more than once, and I will continue coming here. Okay, I don't get it. What's the hype? This place was par at best.... Upon arriving, we were greeted. The restaurant is small, however customer service and cleanliness was amazing. When we arrived, they had happy hour but specifically only for the bar area and sitting only. I thought it was odd that they didn't extend it to all. In my opinion, they are missing out on business there. When we were seated, our waitress immediately helped us but was a bit hands off since it was quite busy. She must have been juggling many things and we didn't mind it. However, the menu selection is... let's say unique. They had an entire section in gnocchi which I heard was good as they made it in-house from scratch. However, everything else was lacking - none of the protein in each pasta dish really stood out on its own. We ordered anyways and hoped for the food to be good but was again, disappointed. I can't attest for how my group felt, but My gnocchi dish came out overly salty, the gnocchi itself was mushy and bland. Felt like eating clumps of mash potatoes and no mochi or chewy texture like genuine Italian pasta. One thing to mention is that they were generous to pass out some free samples, but I did NOT like the cold fishy tomato soup they passed out and instantly regret even taking the complimentary. It was so fishy tasting that I internally gagged and almost threw up. Additionally, the bread they served came out cold and stale. The only good thing worthy of this two star review was the panna cotta they gave us as a complimentary dessert. It was quaint and shared amongst four people but the texture and sweetness was just right. Overall, I think the restaurant is cute. Customer service is fair and decent. The portions are perfect, and we got three complimentary plates: bread with sun-dried tomato olive oil, bruschetta, and panna cotta. Osteria Bella is a gem! We came here for a multifaceted celebration and enjoyed our experience thoroughly. First, the ambiance: it's lively in the boisterous Italian family kind of way that reminded me of some of my (most enjoyable) family gatherings. There was a (bridal shower?) happening in an adjacent room (through a window we could see them) and both the party and the wait staff appeared to be having such a great time - drinking wine, playing games, and just generally have a blast. We ordered appetizers, specifically the bruschetta and the suppli Romana. Of the two, I preferred the bruschetta, which was light and fresh (the suppli was a bit bready for me). The fresh bread that came to the table was also lovely. Deciding on an entrée was so difficult, as I wanted to eat everything on the menu. I ordered the Amatriciana pasta and my gf ordered the Sorrentina. My pasta was excellent - a little sweet, a little smokey, not too heavy. But the gnocchi was better. The pieces of gnocchi were perfectly done - warm and rich with great texture, the sausage was just the right amount of spice, and the mozzarella was optimally creamy. When I go back (and I will) I will order the gnocchi (but probably a different kind because I want to taste all of what they have to offer - like I said, I wanted to eat everything). For dessert, our table ordered the tiramisu (to die for - sweet creamy goodness) and the bomboloni (it's a doughnut, a solid specimen for those who like this genre of dessert and want a bite-sized bit). On the topic of other indulgences, I ordered the house vermouth cocktail (as this is an establishment that specializes in vermouth) and it was only so-so. We came here, last minute, on NYE and I was still able to get us a reservation within 20 minutes. The place had a couple different rooms, we were seated in the main part which was decorated for New Years and they had a DJ playing some great music. We tried the bone marrow and burrata for our appetizers, we scarfed it down so quickly I didn't get a picture of the burrata. Each of our pastas were incredible and fresh!! Had dinner with a friend and it just missed the mark of being excellent and sorry I did not get photos. The selection is excellent - 5 stars Service is excellent- 5 stars The bread and dip- not what I expected- oil with some kind of pepper. It was ok. I prefer garlic and balsamic. We had spinach salad to start - it was pretty good - I think a hit of sea salt would make the dish. A little more of the toppings also - it was spinach heavy and not topping heavy. But it was good. The polenta was brought by mistake - but we are it. Neither of us love polenta but the mushrooms were yummy. The meatballs - loved the tomato cream sauce- tasty meatballs- a little small but really tasty. My dining companion had the gnocchi with ragu and I had order envy bc it was delicious. It was very flavorful and well seasoned. I wish they had that sauce on normal pasta bc it's a bit much with the gnocchi. I had the pasta with guancile - and it was ok. It was a little too tomatoey and not enough meat. I brought leftover home and added Italian sausage, hot pepper flakes, sea salt, and fresh basil and devoured it. Pasta was well cooked but the flavors just missed. Tiramisu for dessert- wasn't the best I've ever had. It was alright- I wish the lady fingers had more run and more coffee. I would not order again. We just came by for happy hour Friday so can't speak to the dinner menu but I could see this being your regular local neighborhood Italian joint. It's really unassuming, easy and friendly. And they have a Parmesan wheel reserved for the sole purpose of tossing hot fresh pasta in the center and melting and absorbing its delicious cheesiness. Lots of great vermouth, beer, and wine offerings to satisfy any boozehound! House cocktail of vermouth and bubbly was great, refreshing. They also were having $1 wine tastings (a normal Friday thing I guess) which consists of 3 wines which were all great - better than the house white my boo tried. The warm spinach salad and bruschetta were nothing special per se but really solid. Anchovies and tarali were outside my personal norm and I really appreciated the tartness of the fish and the crunch of the tarali all together. Would definitely come back. As a solo diner, I wanted to have dinner at the bar but they have only stools with no backrests, so that's a non-starter for my spine. I had the puttanesca which was good and very rich. I would have liked to have had a side salad but they only offer a choice of $14 salads which I assume would be for two or more. Hey, if a simple house salad doesn't come with an entree, for goodness sake, offer a side salad for something reasonable like $6. That's not too much to ask! Mmm..yummy! That's what comes to mind when I think of this place. My boyfriend and I were trying to go to the Bella restaurant next door twice, but couldn't (due to needing reservations and once when it was closed even thought it said on Yelp that it was opened). Both times that we were here--we really enjoyed the food. Both times I got the Pappardelle al Burro e Salsiccia because I loved it so much the first time that I had to get it again! Then we had their bruschetta, and that was pretty yummy as well. Also, a fan of the complimentary bread at the beginning. Free carbs is always a win right? Haha.. Vibe of this place is pretty chill. The bread (baked to order) and the sun dried tomato dipping sauce is worth the wait. We ordered the carbonara and the pork cutlet to split. I love Bella's versions next door and these were identical (wondering if they share a kitchen?). The cutlet breading is some mystery (semolina flour maybe) - but boy-oh-boy the crispy crunch is spot on!! They are still working out the kinks on service - I think there was a gal in training, but the owner David was helping her out. We visited in early Aug 2020 for outdoor dining during the shelter in place. The restaurant did a great job keeping us distanced from other tables. It also kept its staff safe by splitting the bussing efforts between them and us, and by having us order and close the check inside before getting seated outside. Service: Servers were really great and friendly. They kept the line moving as quickly as they could. Outside, they cleared our few plates promptly, and after the meal, they made sure to wipe down all the surfaces. Setting: They built a wooden deck and fence outside on the street where they set a few tables, and put a few more tables on the sidewalk. In between tables were space heaters. We were there on a cold evening, but on a warmer night (if that exists) it's a nice place to be. Food: We ordered a Tricolore salad (mixed greens, arugula, cheese, lemon, EVOO), Amatriciana Cu Spaghetti (guanciale, or Italian cured pork jowl, in a red sauce over spaghetti), and Pappardelle al Burro (fennel sausage in a butter sauce over pappardelle). The pasta was perfectly made and cooked, and the guanciale was a brief reminder of the food we had in Rome. We heard on our way out that they had osso bucco, but it wasn't on the menu. We opted for a bottle of wine and a few entrees, but they brought us complimentary bread, a single fried polenta bite each, and at the end of the meal, a panna cotta! We left stuffed. I would've said the value was fine, but with the extras, it was well worth the cost. Pasta texture and quality was remarkable, and the gnocchi was soft enough to essentially melt in your mouth, although I did find the gorgonzola sauce to be a bit too rich and salty. The orecchiette with sausage was wonderful--I liked it even more than the gnocchi. The brussels sprouts and cauliflower appetizer was probably my favorite thing, with perfect crisp-tender textures and a delightfully savory sauce. I would go back just for that. I'll be honest - I was not expecting to be blown out of the water with Osteria Bella, so shame on me for making that assumption. YOU HAVE TO COME HERE. Forget whatever pasta/Italian restaurant plans you had before and go here instead. Seriously. We came here for Valentine's Day (Friday) with a 7PM reservation and really just wanted to carbo-load ourselves into a coma (this was successful). At first, the restaurant wasn't super packed, but then we were led to a more intimate, separate seating area that was a bit quieter and darker than the main spot, which I was pleased with. Eventually, we saw people filling the restaurant very quickly. Here's what we got: Appetizer - Bruschetta Ca' Pummarola. Roma tomato bruschetta, house made crostini and mozzarella. Everything here was the perfect proportion. The crostini itself was also perfect. I hate it when I try crostini and it's so hard that I practically crack a tooth trying to bite into it. Tomato and the balsamic dressing were to die for - and of course the mozzarella was perfect. Seriously, it may be tempting to get the calamari bc duh fried food, but the bruschetta was FANTASTIC. They also bring out complimentary bread with what I believe is a sun dried tomato olive oil (and yes, it is as delicious as it sounds). Main dish - Pappardelle al Burro e Salsiccia. Pappardelle noodles (long ribbon like) with Italian sausage crumbles, cheese, pepper, truffle butter and bread crumbs. It's a creamy like sauce that is out of this world good, but doesn't taste super heavy like some dishes might be. The Italian sausage is perfect in proportion as well - not skimping there at all! I think I died and went to heaven when I tried this pasta. I could not have imagined a better tasting dish. It's an excellent choice. They have an expansive wine and beer list, but just a note they don't serve liquor (only vermouth). Our server didn't seem quite as knowledgeable over the wine list (we asked for some suggestions), but we picked what we thought sounded good and were happy. At the end of our meal, they also brought a small complimentary dessert - kind of like a small flan with strawberries? All-in-all, our total came out to about $90 before tip, which is a pretty great price for all that we ordered (appetizer, two pasta plates, two glasses of one). We can't wait to come back. The food here is incredible - fantastic flavors, good proportions, nice interior. This spot is seriously a hidden gem - please go before everyone else catches on!! read more

Service is really important to me and it was impeccable here. Marco was attentive without being clingy, happy to answer all of our questions, and sent out 3 extra dishes on the house. I had the pappardelle with salsiccia, breadcrumbs, and truffle butter, and it was excellent. I find service in San Francisco to be consistently subpar, so to be treated so kindly at Osteria Bella was a reason to return in and of itself. We had a Sunday Family dinner here last night...we started with the Frito Misto which was filled with calamari, and veggies lightly fried...so good. Our entrees were all greatly enjoyed...the special lasagna, the gnocchi Verdi, the papradelle, the chicken breaded and the rage...taste perfection. Bella 3848 recently opened in the old Buckshot location. It is basically a combination lounge, restaurant, and wine bar with a fairly casual feel and a nice ambiance. Bella 3848 is a separate restaurant & lounge from Bella Trattoria next door with a separate kitchen and separate waitstaff. The two places have separate head chefs and menus, but they do share a few dishes. The food is just as good as next door. Bella 3848 is more of a lounge and wine bar style with a pool table and a separate room from large groups. The wine selection is nice and they have a few beers available. Since they don't have a full liquor license, they have an inventive list of cocktails made with a vermouth base. They are quite tasty. We ahve been there twice, once for drinks and once for dinner. For dinner we had the warm spinach salad and two separate pasta dishes, all were excellent. We tried the sangria and one of the vermouth cocktails, also excellent. This is hands down the best place in San Francisco to eat gnocchi but I didn't eat that tonight. Tonight I started with the bruschetta and it was, as per usual, the perfect starter. I love how the mozzarella offsets the tomato-basil-olive oil drenched toast. This was perfectly paired with a lovely rosé from Paso Robles, each crisp sip balancing the melange of flavors. Then I had the pappardelle al Ragu, whilst wearing an off white dress I might add, and it was like coming home. The waiter added the home made pepper flake oil to the dish for the perfect balance of sauce, ground beef, pasta and spice. Accompanied by a glass of Chianti, I ate the whole plate in less than 5 minutes, oops! ;) For secondi I had the Manzo, aka the beef carpaccio, and it was beyond what I expected. It was my first time eating raw beef, it was not my idea to order it, and I'm not gonna lie I was a bit scared. To my surprise it melted in my carnivorous mouth deliciously. It was indeed perfectly cured with lemon and salt and served under a bed of arugula, freshly shaved Parmesan and capers. It seems so simple and yet the taste was pure elegance. For dessert the waiter offered me a taste of the house barrel aged Negroni which was made with multiple kinds of vermouth and bitters. I went to Osteria Bella because the seating in the Trattoria was full and this was the only place where we could sit. By the way, the Trattoria also has the same menu, but this is kind of like a different part of the restaurant. The food was absolutely legendary and the service was pretty good. I got spaghetti with red sauce, I always get it as my go-to meal here. The vibe is different from the Trattoria. Osteria Bella has kind of a nightclub vibe, which makes sense because they have a bar which is not included in the Trattoria. I do enjoy the vibe though! And luckily there is some seating parts as well! read more

One of the best Italian restaurant I've ever been. We made reservations on Yelp. Located in the heart of Richmond in San Francisco, Uber dropped us off right in front. There are street parkings but I don't think there is a private parking lot. We were seated right away and I had their house red sangria and the boyfriend had their house Negroni. The sangria was not as sweet as I am used to but I finished it nonetheless. I was told the Negroni was good and the table next to us also ordered one. The bread was so delicious with a sun-dried tomatoes oil dip. I had to get extra. We had the pappardelle and the linguini ragu. It was the best pappardelle I've ever had. The sauce was perfect and the pasta was cooked al dented. The ragu was absolutely delightful as well. I cleaned my bowl off with the bread!! That's saying a lot! The table next to us ordered the specials. Pays tossed in the ring of a parmesan cheese then finished with freshly shaved truffles. The aroma of the truffles traveled to our table and it was awesome! We finished with tiramisu and the affogato. Tiramisu was so delicious. The ladyfingers were thoroughly soaked and the mascarpone was heavenly in the mouth. The only complaint I have is that it was our only night in San Francisco so we will have to wait till our next trip to return! A definite must-go! read more
