Spotted the sign on I-81 and decided to give it a try. Only a mile off the highway into a lovely little downtown. Signage in their window stated they are celebrating 25 years. Succeeding through the pandemic says a lot! We both decided on the lasagna and we were not disappointed. It was delicious and came with some fresh homemade Italian rolls with fresh garlic and oil and butter! This too was fabulous!!!! The owner was very visible and attentive when waitress was busy attending to take out customers and others being seated and served. Felt like a little piece of Little Italy in NYC or Little Italy in Endicott, NY. Kudos to this little Gem in Virginia!!! read more

OMG! I had the best seafood Italian meal that I have had in many years. I live near Charleston South Carolina that's well known for its quality restaurants and this restaurant is on par or better than a lot of them are. Not only was the meal fantastic, but our waitress was phenomenal. I'm so sorry I don't remember her name, but she was thin, average height with brown hair pulled back. I hope there aren't any other waitresses that fit that description there, so you will know who she is, but five stars all the way around. I'm really surprised by the 4+ rating after my dining experience. My first impression is being sat in a booth with crumbs all over the seat and a fly buzzing around. The cheese sticks are generic and the Greek salad was on the oily side. The chicken marsala breading was falling apart like it had been soaked in the sauce too long and the noodles were sticking together in clumps. The marsala sauce was good, so there's potential. The bread with garlic oil was also a nice appetizer. The service here was good. read more

It was an accident that we discovered this treasure! It's not fancy, not even particularly an inviting building/location but I can't wait to be traveling in the area to stop again. The food was delicious, the service was not over the top but friendly & there was nothing to complain about. I can't wait to try their different sauces. My husband was delighted with his Chicken Parm, their bread & oil was some of the best I've eaten--fresh & homemade as was everything we had. On a recent road trip from Louisiana to New York, Sal's Italian Bistro was a total lifesaver! Before leaving town, we Yelped vegan options in the area so we'd know we'd have dinner plans after a very long drive. I don't eat fast food and I wanted to avoid a dinner of nuts, chips and pretzels. Sal's popped up with a review mentioning vegan pizza and pasta with the mysteriously wonderful-sounding gypsy sauce. Visions of this danced in my head on the endless drive until we realized we were cutting it close to their 10pm close time. My co-pilot called and spoke to the nicest lady on the phone who allowed us to place an order ahead of time so that we could either take out if after 10 or eat in if there was time. And I'm so glad there was time to eat in the restaurant! I LOVE cozy little old timey places like Sal's, so it was a dream come true (not exaggerating). Like, just what we needed, a casual trattoria-like atmosphere with booths and dim lighting. We arrived and it was indeed close to closing so we were the only ones in there, but they made us feel so welcome (I hate keeping staff past closing time!) that I knew this was going to be a phenomenal experience. Our waitress immediately brought us Chianti, water and really good bread with garlic & oil. I've never been so happy to see wine and bread. I also had a bowl of vegan soup with pasta that was so good, I might have teared up a bit. And then the gnocchi with Gypsy sauce arrived and angels sang an opera. This was so good that my mouth is watering just thinking about it, the pillowy bundles of potato goodness, smothered in a tomato sauce containing artichokes, olives and spinach. If you like good food go to Sal's!!! I have lived in the area for the past few months and tried a few restaurants in Woodstock and still come back to Sal's. It's not just pasta!! The seafood and steaks are amazing! The staff is so friendly. They have an actual bar even though it's beer and wine. I dine alone but have always felt at home. I have brought friends here who were visiting me and they all love Sal's too. My one friend is gluten free and Sal's made her a pesto gluten free pasta that she thought was amazing!!!! We were on our way to devils backbone camp and starting feeling hungry for dinner. The sign for Sal's was on the highway so we decided to make an impromptu stop. I am so happy we did because this place is little hidden gem. Its in what looks like a cute little downtown area of Edinburg, VA and was very easy to get to. It was around 7:30 pm on a Friday and the entire restaurant was packed with what looked like locals. The food was very authentic and all wine is $8 a glass with many options to choose from. If I ever find myself heading that way way again I will definitely make it to point to stop there. read more

I stopped in and ordered the Lasagna and the Manhattan clam chowder. The clam chowder was hot, the Lasagna was barely warm. I understand they were busy, but that doesn't excuse them for food that is barely warm. When I told my server I would take it to go since it wasn't hot. The soup was already in a to go container. So I asked for a container for the Lasagna.....He got me a container, but didn't give me a bag. So, I dropped the soup. I was really looking forward to good Lasagna. We stumbled upon Sals after church on a Sunday because friends found we had not been yet. We were seated rather quickly but service was rather slow all around. Hubby and I had a garden salad with strawberry dressing( rather small for the price and didn't seem all that fresh) and the eggplant parm ( was so soggy you didn't know if you were getting eggplant or breading). I happened upon this fabulous restaurant located in a small town near Shenandoah Caverns. My friend and I spent the day at the Shenandoah Caverns and their history buildings and were looking to grab a nice dinner before heading back on the road. The Caverns staff recommended this place, which was about 15 minutes away. We hadn't made a reservation and it was around 5:00pm on a Saturday evening. But they had one table open in the rear of the restaurant. We were seated and served quickly. Sal's has an EXTENSIVE Italian menu. There were so many good things it was hard to make a selection. I wanted shrimp but didn't want a cream sauce, so our server Jason said he could have it made without any problem. I ordered shrimp and brocolli with marinana sauce over penne pasta. It was absolutely delicious. Cooked perfectly and served hot. My friend ordered the shrimp and scallops dinner. She raved about it as well. Jason recommended a red wine which complemented our meals. And the fresh rolls were so good. We highly recommend Sal's for great service - and delicious food. We will return. read more

Oh yeah, good Italian. Great pizza! Great Spaghetti! Great Lasagna! Nice, friendly, small-town service and pleasant, relaxing, intimate atmosphere. We stopped by on a late Monday evening, Winding our way back to our rented cabin-in-the-woods after touring Skyline Drive and Luray Caverns. It wasn't crowded, but so much fun....ended up chatting with most of the other patrons about the area, the food, getting ideas on what to order. Very, very pleasant. I discovered this restaurant from their highway sign, and it was a real treat. In addition to a great selection of entrees, many desserts are homemade. I really enjoyed the chicken parm. The restaurant has great ambiance with Italian opera playing gently in the background. They also have a full espresso bar, which rocks. read more

Watch out for the extra charges. I asked if I could have a Caesar salad as my salad option that came with the meal. Our waiter, Sal's son, said I could, but neglected to mention the $3 extra it would be. My husbands steak came with pasta and he was told he could pick any sauce he wanted...just neglected to mention there would be an additional $2 charge by adding a sauce. The pasta was good, the NY Strip was tough, I think my husband ate 3 bites, but he raved about the pasta sauce, the Tre "P"...Alfredo with ham and peas, which I tried and highly recommend. We are originally from the northeast and recently moved to Tennessee. We know good Italian and there seems to be a drought so far n Tennessee. The last time we had Italian in Va. it was awful so we were a little reluctant to try again. Well all it took was traffic on 81 and dinner time to find this little jewel off of 81. We started off with this great appetizer that included fresh mozzarella, peppers, and prosciutto with great rolls. It ended up an excellent choice. Wife ordered seafood mix and I ordered veal piccata. Both excellent and ample. We thought Joann our server was efficient and friendly. Not like a certain unnamed Italian chain with hopeless food, not a stuffy fancy place, but rather a casual restaurant to bring your family for some very good Italian dinner. Getting the "bad" stuff outta the way: their garlic bread was just ok. I would've been happier with something outta the freezer section that I could throw in the oven at home. What they should really focus on is theirs soup - they really have to step it up. I HELD the salt shaker over it, let it pour, and that still didn't help these little chunks of chicken, celery, and carrots. The good stuff: Wonderful and flavorful entrees one might expect from a more up scale restaurant served by a super nice wait staff who make you feel right at home. When you're outside your comfort zone known as NoVA out in the middle of who knows where, it's nice to feel welcome. All of us had a chicken dish, one order of Francese, one order of the Cacciatore (which was better than the Francese), and one order of the Firenze (which was better than the other two dishes!) We also had a side order of the sausages which were delish. Everything was served nice and hot and was just really very good food. My wife is a fan of their gnocchi. Sal is very personable with all his customers and usually manages to slip out to say hello. The small town is charming and attractive from the main drag. Never have an issue parking. The interior has become cozier over the years. The food is good, the pasta affordable, for entree types, it's up to you how much you feel like spending. The service is usually prompt and courteous. For dessert, if you have the time and the weather permits, consider heading north on 11 a few minutes and checking out Krystals Custard/Putt Putt (the clubhouse). read more
