Still very good, same as I remember last. Maybe take a little umbrage they call this an 'osteria', given price and ambiance. Wasn't thrilled about being sat against a wall, which made service a little difficult - some dropped food (slices of strip off the porterhouse fumbled as server tried slipping in, and he also dripped some sauce on my utensils/tablecloth in front of me) - minor things. We were four people, split two pastas and two mains after apps of zucchini flowers, octopus, barata / prosciutto salad, and a lamb skewer special. The strips of lamb where most underwhelming. For $30 i'd expect noticeably more tender meat, a premium cut (loin or rack), vs what seemed like maybe leg cooked too long, or maybe it was shoulder? Seasoning missed the mark, for me. Pasta course was the Parma wheel and gnocchi Amatriciana - the guanciale had that 'butcher' taste I like, a little soft vs crisped, but that's a feature in some styles. Pasta was clearly fresh. Then a beautiful piece of sea bass - really a standout - and the smaller ~32oz steak Florentine - a lean cut with a tremendous filet on it. We dined with a group of five people on a Friday night. Everyone ordered different appetizers and entrees. Not one of us had a consistent experience. Something as basic and simple as pasta pesto was soaked in water and temped. Steaks were overcooked. The waitress forgot to bring us our wine. Mixed feelings. So many friends have spoken so highly of this place that I felt we HAD to give it a try. They also cautioned about the price so, after selling off an inherited Monet, off we went! Umbra is in a nondescript strip mall with a Thai place next door. Dark, front-facing windows give it a chic look but... oh no... fake flowers. Normally, not a big deal but for a place known for being upscale, it seemed incongruous for the vibe. More on that later. Inside was cool and urban chic. Long bar gives view of their famous oven. Seating was comfortable enough though the artificial flowers and grapes (circa 1984 Patchogue's Fantasy Gardens) detracted. I get that they're trying to do an Italian countryside thing but it seemed forced. The food was a mixed bag. Wagyu tartar with quail egg was pretty awesome; rich, minerally, unctuous. So far so good. Cocktail was tasty and the wine was fine. But then... Wife got a pasta dish that she was happy with. She found it to be very good but not exemplary. I ordered the veal osso buco which was a tremendous disappointment. The bed of risotto was terrific but it seemed like they simply placed several (small) medallions of veal in the middle surrounding a tiny bone and then dropped sauce all over it. I'm a grown man and have faced all sorts of disappointments in my life (being an Islanders fan conditions you to this) but I kinda wanted to cry when that came to the table. I've had osso buco other places and this plate fell well short. (I actually was arguing with a friend who is a tremendous fan of Umbra and, when I showed him the pic, he fell silent. I included pics of two other osso bucos for comparison). Friends had mentioned that the steaks are really good here but I kinda go to steak joints for steaks, ya dig? They make their own pasta so maybe I should have chosen one of those dishes. Affogato for dessert which was less than what I was expecting but is (according to friend in the know) the classic and traditional preparation so no real complaints there. The service was very good, however. Both our waitress and the bartender/sommelier were attentive, friendly and well-informed. All-in-all, a nice place. A VERY nice place. We just celebrated my brother's 30th birthday at Osteria Umbra, and it was truly an unforgettable experience from start to finish. It was a surprise party for 15 people (his absolute favorite restaurant), and the entire night exceeded every expectation we had. The level of service we received was nothing short of incredible. Our main server, John, was absolutely out of this world. Not only was he attentive and on top of everything all night long, but he also took the time to share background and knowledge about the restaurant and each dish we were enjoying. That combination of service, passion, and education made the entire experience feel so elevated and special. Anything we needed, he was there immediately--he truly made us feel taken care of the entire evening. His assistant, Charles, was just as amazing--so attentive, kind, and dedicated to making sure we had the best possible time. And the food... absolutely phenomenal. I'm sad to say this was my first time at Osteria Umbra. What the heck was I waiting for? As soon as we arrived we were greeted by 3 smiling faces, so adorable. We went to the bar to wait for the rest of our party and had some drinks served by Olivia. Once we were seated Jackie was our most gracious and accommodating server. We had the most delicious and fabulous meal. Orange and fennel salad, grilled calamari, pasta with truffle cream sauce and a 32oz bone in rib eye that was cooked to perfection. Going into Umbria, it's like a portal. From a side road shopping mall into an elegant eatery. We were greeted by a pre hostess who directed us to another hostess. We were in and out in an hour and I knew we were being rushed which I wasn't a fan of but it was done somewhat respectfully. The food was phenomenal. We opted for a special cheese wheel cacio e peppe. I should have known it was expensive when our waiter didn't mention its price, but other specials he did. All pasta dishes were in the high 20s or 30's but this was $45. My wife said it was the best pasta she's ever eaten and it was a pretty cool table side exhibit. But it was steep. My quince paste apple martini was sublime and I loved the glass it came in. Our dinners, I had to get venison as I never see it on menus and my wife got the sea bass. We really enjoyed our meals. Even looking at the menu, I think I could have gotten and enjoyed almost every meal which I normally can't say in an Italian restaurant. Maybe because Umbra doubles as a steakhouse, lol. Beware though, it is pricey and it's funny that the waiter asked if we are celebrating anything as I assume most do when coming here. They do a fun firecracker dessert for bdays. I came here on a weeknight with my co workers and had a fabulous meal. The restaurant is upscale and a perfect place to have a conversation as it was not loud inside. We were well taken care of by our waiter (he was excellent at upselling) and the staff and had excellent food. We started with the pasta appetizer that starts with lighting a huge Parmesan cheese wheel on fire. It is served table side so you get a show as well. While the cheese melts, the chef pours a pasta with truffle cream sauce into the cheese wheel and mixes everything together and serves it on your plate. The pasta was so creamy and cheesy and very rich. I ordered the Chilean sea bass for my main meal and it was one of the tastiest meals I've had in awhile. The fish was seared on the outside and very tender. It sat on top of a canneloni bean mixture, beet puree and broccolini. The Brussels sprouts were also very tasty. Eaten here before and the quality has gone down severely while the prices have gone through the roof. Biggest disappointment was my tuna, extremely fishy and had to send it back. I'm 50 year old and I don't believe I have ever sent a dish back before. The tuna steak also had two large ribs (maybe 4" long by 1/4" wide) sticking out the side of it. Honestly looked like a tomahawk beef steak. I've done plenty of fishing and have eaten ton's of tuna and I've never seen a tuna with bones like that. Replacement dish was a lasagna, which they had to rush, and was cold in the middle. I felt bad and didn't send that back as well. Will just microwave it tomorrow. Have to say the desserts were excellent, lemon cake and a strawberry tiramisu. In any event, a $325 dinner for two (I had a bourbon cocktail and glass of wine, wife had a diet coke) and mostly I have a stomachache. Just so disappointed as I purposely didn't eat much, looking forward to this anniversary dinner, and as said I was unhappy. Keep your $325 in your pocket, make a steak or lasagna at home, buy a bottle of bourbon, maybe get a dessert to go I guess if they offer that. It took around 10 minutes to get our table ready (we made a reservation and would recommend one) and we were on our way. For appetizers, we ordered the grilled calamari (highly recommend) the blueberry scallops, radicchio salad which was presented very nicely, and the black truffle pasta, which was SO good but it's one of those dishes that is very rich, and a little goes a long way! For entrees, we ordered the wagu ($99) and the porterhouse for 2. ($118) My husband and I shared the wagu and everything was so delicious, I unfortunately did not even take photos of the entrees because my group did not give me a chance to do so, lol. The desert, we had the blueberry cheesecake and the coffee panna cotta. Everything is made in house and you can tell it was extremely fresh. Service wise, our server was exceptional. I can't remember her name but she had brown hair and glasses! Ambiance wise, the inside and outside is so nicely decorated with flowers, and I loved the lighting fixtures on the ceiling. Which in my opinion is a great way to start a Meal. The waiters love to share the story of Osteria Umbra and I was really impressed to hear it! I love the fact that they have an in house pastry chef who makes all of the desserts. I have ordered the cacio e pepe both times I have eaten here because it is incredible. I love that they give you the option for cheese wheel pasta where they will light the wheel of cheese on fire in front of you and sautee your pasta in the melted cheese table side. The place is utterly gorgeous. It is completely upscale and pretentious in the best way, which allows me to give 2 stars. The service from the wait staff is impeccable as well. The food is a whole other story. Many of the options that we ordered were way too heavily doused with Black pepper, and everything is as overpriced as could be. My wife's wine was sour, and the sommelier made a face when getting her another bottle. Don't allow the customer to taste if you don't want the opinion. After sinking 500 bucks into a dinner that wasn't worth it, we decided not to return. My wife's Bolognese was killer as was my smoked negroni. Most recently, we went for my wife's birthday a few months ago (it's her fave restaurant). Appetizer of baccala and artichokes tempura with tomato, olive and caper sauce was terrific. Osteria Umbra is one of those places where you see everyone else going to and bookmark it for a special occasion. I mentioned to my wife, do you want to do anything for New Years Eve? Because I don't want to see anyone, pay for anyone and not start my New Year eating warmed up Costco tacos over someone's house. Can I plan a nice evening for us? I made reservations for Osteria Umbra. Pulling up to a small strip mall, we walked inside to a beautiful restaurant. There's a large decorated Christmas tree in the middle of the space. We're seated in a far corner next to a few other couples. It's New Years Eve so we ordered festive cocktails. My wife ordered a Pear Margarita and I ordered a smoky Old Fashioned. Kudos to the bartender, both drinks are excellent. The bread basket also impressed me. The assorted freshly made breads served with a fine olive oil was a nice touch. We are salmon fiends! Looking at the menu online, we zeroed in on the smoked Scottish Salmon plate to start. The waiter had a special table side smoker that he used in preparation for serving us. The Salmon was insane! Topped with crème fresh and caviar, the ultimate way to start 2023. Now I see the cheese wheel being passed around to various tables. I can't eat a mound of pasta! I told our waitress I'd like to order pasta entree and Branzino entree. My wife & I made our meal family style with both dishes in the middle of the table. The process is pretty amazing. First the cheese wheel cart comes to the table. The cheese wheel is hollowed out to get the pasta party started. The pasta, think of spaghetti and angel hair pastas. The freshly made pasta from Osteria Umbra noddle sits in the middle. The waiter set the wheel on fire! Once the cheese is nice and gooey, the pasta is tossed in rich, cheesy goodness. Had reservations at a high top table.. only thing available and this was like a last resort spot.. waiter and I guess the GM were nice enough.. waiter overwhelmed but sweet, it was packed ..we all went there starving since we knew we were gonna eat like slobs so ..... Ordered the burrata app and beef carpaccio ... burrata didn't taste fresh. Usually it's warm to room temp inside and super fresh n milky.. not the case.. Beef carpaccio tasted like roast beef from the deli, I've had better. We ordered 3 pastas. Black truffle ravioli which was in a runny, watered down truffle sauce with basic ravioli... spaghetti carbonara.. this was prob the most decent? It was just a bit eggy (I liked, my gf's didn't).. and then this pasta that they toss table side in a cheese wheel. Obv, this catches everyone's attention for the novelty factor and IG photo opp but it was a miss for us. It was so congealed and unenjoyable. We didn't finish. I actually don't care for pasta really much.... this reminded me again why. A waste of calories. Then for the finale, we ordered a profiterole which was a stale cream puff but had a really awesome side of white chocolate gelato. I was so disappointed in this place... I might come back to give it another shot bc they were cranking but I would not order any of the things mentioned above. Visiting the area this week, and decided to try this restaurant. Very good! As you enter, the foyer was very lovely as was the hostess. A solo guitarist in the welcoming bar area. I would probably dine in the bar next time rather than the dining room, as it was more intimate. Dining room was very nice and the servers were friendly, efficient, and professional. Five stars for them! We ordered the snow pea salad and panzanella salad for apps. The snow pea salad was delicious and the portions were just right. The panzanella was not really authentic. It was more of a tossed salad with some croutons but it was good. My husband had NY strip steak with mashed potatoes and that also had some salad on the plate. Steak was done just right. Only negative was the sauce was ordered on the side but it was actually on the steak. I had the black ink pasta with baby clams and tomatoes. Loved it. Both food and experiences were enjoyed . However the Happy Hour, 4-7pm has some great items for solid prices on their menu, they also said they get their regulars that come in often, so if you're into that this is a good spot to try. Bon G. and I chose Osteria Umbra to celebrate our Anniversary due to the great Yelp Reviews. Glad we did.. from the reception by a sweet young lady who ushered us to the quiet side of the restaurant for us to enjoy our celebratory dinner. We were immediately greeted by our server Melinda, who recited the history of the restaurants and its owners...she was terrific! Started with cocktails and worked into appys and mains. For appy we chose the Scallops...were delish and melt in your mouth. Melinda suggested we choose the pasta special made in the Parm Wheel as an intermediate course before the main. Was spectacular prep and creamy delishishness!! During dinner we were visited by the Manager, Carlos several times asking how our dinner was and if there were any questions he could answer for us. For mains, Bon had the Veal Chop as it looked great in the pictures on Yelp. Was not as large as depicted, but was perfectly prepared MR and was delish!. I had the Branzino, also cooked in their fiery wood fueled oven...came out looking great and with the seasoning on the skin, tasting better! For dessert, we shared the Strawberry Sorbet...the perfect finish to our meal. All in all, we were so happy dining at this upscale venue and were appreciative of the attentivness and quality of the offerings. We will return for another occasion !! read more

It's tough to please my mom's taste buds after she's eaten in Italy for months. While we enjoyed this restaurant, there was no signature dish where everything blended seamlessly. Something seemed off one way or another to give it 3.5 stars. Nonetheless, the strengths was that everything was cooked just right. It's hard to screw up bread, butternut squash soup, and burrata (unless it's not fresh). Even though grilled octopus can be rubbery, I'm glad it was tender enough to chew without a fight. Whether you had the Mediterranean cod, wood fired veal chop, or tagliatelle, nothing was overcooked. To end on a sweet note, the gelato was creamy and freshly made. However, I'm not a fan of tomato-based sauces on fish or their special with watered down white truffle pasta ($95) even if it's cooked tableside in a cheese bowl. The tiramisu was so light that it seemed to be missing some texture from ladyfingers. Parking is ample and the staff is attentive and helpful in terms of service. The complimentary cheese tastings are a treat. However, just check the reviews and go with your gut on what you enjoy without being tempted otherwise =P read more

The second time is the charm! I came back here during Happy Hour to try more foods. Everybody provided outstanding service, including the hostess, maitre d', waiter, sommelier and the proprietors. Servers came around and offered each diner a wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano. Bread was served with some extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. All menu items are popular in the Umbrian section of Italy. The pasta is made fresh on premises. The grilled calamari was tasty. Taking the suggestion of the Sommelier Gavin, I paired it with a Riesling. The potato gnocchi with duck ragu was fabulous. The gnocchi was so airy that it felt "low carb". Chef/co-owner, Marco Pellegrini, prepared the Pasta Special in a gigantic, hollowed out Parmigiano Reggiano cheese wheel that he fired up, right front of my table. It is a cooking technique that I plan to use at home. The Special, whose formal name is "Taglierini alla Gricia", is made with guanciale (pig cheeks) and Pecorino Romano (sheep cheese). It is a Roman dish that is very robust and decadent. Freshly grated pepper on top enhanced its flavor. The Italian Cheesecake with blueberry compote was heavenly good. I will definitely come back here just to eat that dessert. This was truly a unique dining experience. I felt like I was dining in an Osteria in The City. Lastly, this restaurant has an Instagram page that showcases their menu items and informs followers of wine tasting Events. Osteria Umbra is now my favorite Italian restaurant in the New York Metropolitan area. read more
