The second time is the charm! I came back here during Happy Hour to try more foods. Everybody provided outstanding service, including the hostess, maitre d', waiter, sommelier and the proprietors. Servers came around and offered each diner a wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano. Bread was served with some extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. All menu items are popular in the Umbrian section of Italy. The pasta is made fresh on premises. The grilled calamari was tasty. Taking the suggestion of the Sommelier Gavin, I paired it with a Riesling. The potato gnocchi with duck ragu was fabulous. The gnocchi was so airy that it felt "low carb". Chef/co-owner, Marco Pellegrini, prepared the Pasta Special in a gigantic, hollowed out Parmigiano Reggiano cheese wheel that he fired up, right front of my table. It is a cooking technique that I plan to use at home. The Special, whose formal name is "Taglierini alla Gricia", is made with guanciale (pig cheeks) and Pecorino Romano (sheep cheese). It is a Roman dish that is very robust and decadent. Freshly grated pepper on top enhanced its flavor. The Italian Cheesecake with blueberry compote was heavenly good. I will definitely come back here just to eat that dessert. This was truly a unique dining experience. I felt like I was dining in an Osteria in The City. Lastly, this restaurant has an Instagram page that showcases their menu items and informs followers of wine tasting Events. Osteria Umbra is now my favorite Italian restaurant in the New York Metropolitan area. read more

I've been dying to come here for the pasta in the cheese wheel for so long and it did not disappoint. Not sure what the norm is but we got the lemon pasta special and it was amazing-the added spritz of lemon essence at the end really put it over the top. Highly recommend. My friends and I split that and a few other things-burrata and prosciutto, zucchini appetizer, pesto pasta with shrimp, truffle fries, brussel sprouts & affogato...honestly everything was amazing. We also got a few martinis that were tasty as well and the service was fantastic. It's decadent rich tasting food and you certainly pay for it so my only qualm is that this 'high end' restaurant is in a strip mall. When I made the reservation for Osteria Umbra, I was expecting a small, low-key Italian venue with a personalized experience. What I got was a very large, moderately noisy venue, with a very personalized experience. From the entrance to the vast rooms for diners, Osteria Umbra speaks to diners who are looking for a high-energy, yet romantic and classy meal. We were greeted immediately at a large counter, similar to front desks at a law firm or advertising agency. Once we were checked in, another person walked us through the large main dining area to a room off the side. I took note of a the tremendous wood-fired grill. I did not expect something that huge, but there it was, with people working like crazy around it. Our table was large, with plenty of room for 6 people. The were small pumpkins and gourds on the table, a nice tribute to the fall season. Waters were filled immediately and a handsome bread basket with a sampling of fresh cheese were passed around the table. THE GROWS: The wood-fired grill is AMAZING, but it obviously generates a lot of smoke. Be prepared to wear clothing that is washing machine safe, because the smell will cling to you. The gelato of the day was hazelnut, so I asked if they could swap out the vanilla gelato for hazelnut in my affogato. They charged me an upcharge for that, making my affogato almost a $20 splurge. Something tells me it's less of a policy to upcharge than a "the computer won't let me enter the swap so it was easier to just charge you separately for different ice cream." THE GLOWS: I ordered the scallop appetizer, which were perfectly seared and served over a butternut squash puree with guanciale (LOVE IT!). For my entree I felt obligated to try something in the wood-burning grill, so I opted for the bronzino. It was served whole with a side dish of fingerling potatoes. A few of us decided to order a side of sauteed spinach to share as well. I am not a potato lover, unless they are mashed, but these fingerling potatoes were cooked to the perfect texture and had just the right amount of salt and other seasonings. The bronzino was memorable, albeit a chore to navigate the bones. But that is what you sign up for when eating fresh fish. It did not deter me savoring each and every bite. I rounded out the meal with their affogato, made with fresh gelato, served on a platter with the gelato in the glass and a separate cup of espresso. Nice touch so that it wasn't all melted by the time it was brought to the table. Osteria Umbra is not your regular local Italian spot. It's somewhere to go for a special occasion or just to experience the off-the-beaten-path Italian food the chef offers. Wow did we have a great experience at Osteria Umbra. My expectations were HIGH, and they were met. I need to start by saying this restaurant is pricey. We came here for our anniversary (plus we had a $100 gift card from Christmas) but this is not an everyday dining experience. Our waitress Morgan was unbelievably nice; professional and attentive. She explained the history behind the restaurant and gave us plenty of recommendations. I had a delicious pear martini and we shared the scallops and the calamari to start. I have scallops pretty much everywhere I go; these were good but not out of this world. The calamari was grilled and served on skewers and they were fantastic. We just had to have the pasta special cooked in the Parmesan wheel table side. The pasta was perfectly cooked snd the truffle sauce was fantastic. My husband doesn't even like truffle typically but he finished his plate quicker than I did. We then shared the ribeye which was for sure one of the top five steaks we've ever had. It came with herb butter, a little arugula salad and mashed potatoes; I always appreciate when a steak entree comes with a side. Even though we were stuffed, my husband said the strawberry gelato was calling his name so we ordered that and I had a tiramisu martini. Both were delicious. Our waitress mentioned all desserts are made in-house. I LOVE a dessert martini and they had an extensive list. Osteria Umbra really made our anniversary dinner special. We had dinner with friends last night and found the food to be very good and the service attentive. It's too bad the restaurant stands on attitude and has no customer relations support, especially when dealing with its management. Let me explain. Earlier in the ordering, my guest wanted to exchange mashed potatoes for another vegetable. No problem as long as we agreed to a $5.00 extra charge. We were surprised but accepted it. When it can to dessert , we discovered that the restaurant had a policy of only one flavor per serving of 3 balls of Gelato. One asked why to the manager we were told "contamination "? When suggested three plates , the manager had an attitude that it was the policy of the restaurant and she wouldn't accommodate the request.. We cancelled our order and won't be back. read more

So, if you've lived in this area long enough, you know the building Osteria Umbra is located in, has gone through a lot of hands over the years. So my apprehension about Osteria upon its arrival...has really been building up the last couple of years. I ended up getting takeout for dinner. Super simple, Radicchio Salad and Cacio e Pepe. Delivery was quicker than scheduled, everything was packed neatly, and they even tucked in some pieces of focaccia for free! The focaccia itself, soft and salty. To be completely honest, it was almost like eating a savory doughnut, which I wasn't mad at. The Cacio e Pepe was delicious. A little disappointed it came with penne, but in the end, it did not matter. You could taste the pecorino and pepper and it all came together so beautifully. The highlight of my meal though, was the radicchio salad. Which is shocking because normally I am allergic to all salads and food of the health variety. But the radicchio, pomegranates, pears, and robiola cheese just created this wonderful mixture of bitter, sweet, and creamy flavors that complimented the heaviness of the cacio e pepe. Honestly, I had leftovers of it the next day, and it tasted even better. Overall, if you're looking for a new and unique type of Italian food on the island, I would definitely come to Osteria Umbra. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The drinks were great. The food was OK . The venison rack was more tough than I would have liked. But the ambience was great. The NY strip I'm told was very tender. The pasta made in the parm cheese wheel was most likely the best pasta dish I ever had but we split it as an appetizer (recommended) because it's very rich. My only complaint is the tables are pretty small and we were kinda squished in the corner - also they don't allow you to hang you coat on the back of your chair which is a little annoying especially because I realized I forgot something in my coat once it had already been checked in. How is it possible to update my review of a stunning gem? This restaurant from the moment you enter & are welcomed is in a word DIVINE!!!! Our very knowledgeable waitress Cassandra gave us a beautiful explanation of how this place came to be & it truly is a work of love. This was our 3rd time here & our daughter & husbands 1st. We started our our meal with a favorite zucchini flower filled over a sea of Gorgonzola cheese smooth as silk..the grilled calamari was excellent. I went a little different & had roast suckling pig over a bed of mashed potatoes & topped with crispy pork skin..what a crunch. The pork was for tender & the accompanying gravy was perfection. For me when you are presented dinner it should have cravability & this did. Another diner had the strip steak which was very good. My husband had the spaghetti & clams which he too enjoyed Dessert offered the obligatory gelato & I had the pana cotta topped with a chocolate ganache over the coffee cream pudding. The inside is a little dark but beautiful with a very modern & chic looking with a beautiful bar. In the back of the restaurant they have a fire pit with a fresh pig being roasted. It is their signature dish at the restaurant. The waitresses took our order. We were served fresh parmigiana cheese which was delicious with a bread basket which is a awesome start to a delicious meal. The Cocktails were delicious but unfortunately not exactly served the way we order them but it happens. Be prepared to wait in between courses. We had the burrata with truffles, zucchini flowers as appetizers & they were definitely a 5 plus! We then had fresh made Pappardelle Bolognese which lacked a little bit of salt but you definitely must try it. The best dinner hands down was the fire roasted Veal Chops it simple but tender & had the best grilled taste. We tried the suckling pig which was so tender & they gave you different parts & delicious crunchy skin. The Veggies were all fresh & delicious. For dessert we had the Salami dessert which was definitely interesting chocolate log dessert. The soufflé was more like a lava cake but very good. The owner stopped by to say hello. This is related to my visit tonight on Thursday, September 11,2025. Unfortunately, the restaurant canceled my reservation so I could not write a review. We had 3 guests and were expecting an amazing meal as usual. We ordered appetizers that were terrific! When it came to our entrees 2 were very good - I ordered the NY strip medium rare and it came over cooked. The manager-sommelier asked if I wanted it refired and I said yes and the second one came out medium rare but with no balsamic reduction or seasoning. When I asked Sabrina about it she said she left it off due to the tables allergies (which were my husbands). When we got the check we mistook a double charge for the steak and it was taken care of. All was what we thought was okay. When we were leaving, Chef Marco was at the reception desk shook my husbands hand and told him - he looked at both steaks and they were both fine and we were no longer welcome back to the restaurant. We are long time customers and are appalled by this behavior. One bad meal and the chef did not like us returning it to the kitchen so we are banned from the restaurant. An absolute favorite when I visit Smithtown, NY on Long Island. A hidden gem in an old Strip Mall, one wouldn't know what lies inside if they weren't already informed of the reputed chiefs running the place. Comfortable and spacious with soft music in the background, I always feel relaxed here. Sam and John along with Eric who cut our delicious Prime Ribeye table side were congenial, informative and attentive. The mozzarella and tomato salad had a delightful surprise when served. An iced basil gelato sat in the center to complement the salad. A rarity. I have had this one other time in Paris at Didon. The rigatoni had an incredible sauce using Guanciale, a cured pork. The Aged Prime Ribeye was flavorful with a flavored butter on the side. The mashed potatoes that come with it were so creamy. Just the way I like them. The Chocolate Soufflé was a great finish. After all of the rave reviews here for this restaurant, I decided to treat my fiancé to a Fathers Day dinner last night. The both of us agreed, Osteria Umbra totally and completely blew us away with their food, drinks and incredible hospitality. Wow. Upon being seated we were greeted by our fabulous waiter Matteo and an extremely knowledgeable sommelier. To start, we had generous hunks of Parmesan cut right from the wheel in front of us with warm assorted breads and olive oil for dipping. We told them that we had heard about the restaurant through the foodies group and they said "We LOVE them!" The parmesan was the best I've ever had and paired perfectly with the delicious focaccia dipped in olive oil. My fiancé has never been a wine drinker and truthfully had never tasted anything other than maybe Barefoot lol. The sommelier recommended something he called "cashmere in a glass" and oh boy, it really was. He thoroughly enjoyed it and said he may be a wine convert now. Haha. Their selection of wines is impressive, and they also have a full cocktail menu with offerings such as the smoked old fashioned and blueberry lemonade. Matteo was super helpful when it came to selecting our appetizers and entrees. He recommended the calamari and we chose the scallops as well for starters. Both were beautifully presented, generous portions and melt in your mouth tender. The flavors all worked so well together and everything was perfectly cooked. For entrees my fiancé went with the New York Strip and I tried the roast suckling pig. Both came with mashed potatoes and arugula salad. The steak was hands down the best steak either of us have ever had. Our eyes were practically rolling into the back of our heads, that's how good it was. The pork was fall apart tender with a piece of crispy skin on top, served with a delicious gravy. So comforting and different. The mashed potatoes were also exceptionally good. Of course, we saved room for dessert. We got the Panna Cotta and the Blueberry Cheesecake. Omg. Again we were totally floored by how delicious everything was. Every single thing on the plates was homemade and you could absolutely taste the difference. At the end of our meal we were given two glasses of limoncello compliments of the chef. Throughout our meal we were greeted by several members of the staff with warm smiles and great suggestions of what to try next. Matteo, our waiter, actually was Chef Marco's son! Such lovely people, and you could truly see they were full of joy serving everyone last night. Even on a busy holiday, you couldn't tell. Nobody missed a beat and when we were given the check, we were told there wasn't a rush at all and to please stay and enjoy as long as we wanted. This is a really special place. The restaurant is gorgeous and this place is well known for its in house pasta dish made table side where they whip up the pasta in a cheese wheel and mix the ingredients together and cook it at the table. The food is delicious but is definitely a splurge or a special occasion type of place. Although I can probably find any reason to eat here. Unfortunately our experience at Osteria Umbra was very underwhelming. We came here specifically for the cheese wheel, as my fiancée had enjoyed this previously in Aruba. The pasta was prepared table side, but the wheel itself was almost to the bottom so we were unable to see it being prepared. As for the pasta itself, there was something wrong with the flavor, to the point of it being inedible. It was extremely unbalanced, but I couldn't quite put my finger on what went wrong. My fiancée ended up eating a few bites and gave the rest to me, but I wasn't willing to finish it. My meal was actually quite good, which was the truffle ravioli. The sauce was flavorful and ravioli were excellent. We both enjoyed this one and it would be something I'd definitely get again. As for the dessert, we got the Italian cheesecake and cream puffs. The Italian cheesecake was good, but the blueberry compote was overwhelmingly sweet and they really laid it on thick. The cream puffs were decent, nice texture on the pastry, but the cream left a little to be desired. As for coffee, I'd skip it. I wouldn't expect a restaurant at this price point to be using a Nespresso machine. read more

To start they come around with the parm wheel and chip off a few pieces for you with a variety of breads. The cheese is WOW. To start we had prosciutto, artichoke, and buffalo mozzarella with a balsamic glaze drizzle- so good! The server Charles was so nice, didn't rush us, and knew everything about the menu and the business, very nice guy. We had asked for a wine recommendation, and he advised us if we were open to suggestions, to order our food and then will send over the sommelier to recommend based on our selection. We settled on a really nice red. For our mezzo course we had the black truffle pasta cooked in the cheese wheel, which was fantastic and I am kicking myself about not getting a picture to post. For dinner my hubby ordered the maiello, which is the roast pork over mashed potatoes with gravy, and that was outstanding. I had the wood fired veal chop and omg, I'm still thinking about it! We had a side of Brussel sprouts with guanciale which were fantastic, make sure to get a balsamic drizzle on them. For dessert, we had the table side pumpkin gelato for 2. One of the best Italian restaurants in Suffolk. Good, service, selection of wines. The wood-fired grill meats are an experience unlike any other restaurant around. One of our favorite places to have special occasions and such. BUT we were kicked out of the restaurant so the staff could start their holiday party. Told the liquor we asked for they didn't have, when asking for a replacement they said the bar was closed (with many still in the restaurant). Only for our waiter to come back 5 min later saying that they did find the liquor and the "bar could be opened up for us". Meanwhile the whole staff was having drinks poured at the bar. I hosted a dinner for 10 at Osteria Umbra on 10/10. The restaurant shares its strip mall with Raan Thai. Find parking in the front or rear of the restaurant. COVID-19 protocols that evening were sketchy. Though there was a temperature check, I have a different idea of 50% occupancy. Our very pleasant and helpful young lady server brought me a nice GG Martini. I chose the Caprese Salad, like a few others at my table. It was meh. Order the Prosciutto instead. Followed up with the Veal Osso Buco and was solely disappointed as it is one of my favorite dishes. As to presentation, not ready for prime time. Instead of arching up proudly from its risotto, it was literally "tipped over". More problematic was the texture of the veal, which tasted more boiled than braised. On the positive side, I tasted a companion's Veal Maltagliati. We agreed that it was yummy. Several other diners also commented favorably about the Trofie (twisted pasta) with Basil Pesto. The restaurant's desserts sparkle and shine. The laughs we shared over the "Chocolate Salami" were nearly better than the wonderful dessert itself. First time here and it was a magical experience, I had Jackie as my server( or was it Steven?). From the start of the night I felt like I was a horse lord amongst the Darhraki. Any need that I had it was answered, the drinks I prefer were fantastic and they have a wide selection. The portions are large and are able to feed a foster family of twelve. We went there for our 50th wedding anniversary on May 26th. Right from the start with walking in, we were cheerfully greeted and seated right away. The place is beautiful. The manager Mark was extremely nice and very friendly. Our server, Lana, was fantastic and very informative with the menu. The food was delicious. We had as the starter, the pasta in the cheese wheel, which was made tableside and there are not enough words to describe the taste other than outstanding. My husband had the NY Strip steak which melted in your mouth...so so good. I had the Tomahawk Steak which was sliced tableside and the flavor was phenomenal. We shared the chocolate souffle for desser, which was totally decadent.
