Praise of Jed Hirsch General Building Contractor…read more I have had the opportunity to work directly with Jed Hirsch twice after he was referred to me by another homeowner and two building contractors. I first met Jed when a homeowner I house-sit for was doing an expansion on their home. I was at the house during the deconstruction and construction of it. I can tell you that the site was clean, organized, and well designed from what I saw. As the family was living in the house during construction, steps were taken to keep the property as dust-free and secure as possible. Later, a house I worked at in Hope Ranch was in need of some major water abatement treatments due to poor construction ten years prior. To put it in perspective, most contractors shied away from this job. Others were just not qualified to complete the task. I then asked around to a couple of contractors that I know and Jed's name came up twice. Both said that homeowners love him as he is a sticker to details. Jed and his crew took on the tasks of removing and reinstalling large, two story windows, tearing out and reinstalling beautiful stone deck around half of the 12,000 square foot house, organizing and meeting with water abatement professionals, installing the suggested abatement materials, plastering walls to match the color of the existing walls, designing new sheet metal jambs... well, the list goes on, but I won't bore you with the details. To say the least, it was quite the undertaking, but the house was watertight once completed and it did not look like any reconstruction had been done. It should also be mentioned that Jed arranged the workload of the contractors so that they were not stepping over each other, thus causing making the project as cost efficient as possible and completed in a timely manner. Should I have other future construction needs, Jed will be on the top of my list of people to call.

Steve Knght was pleasant to work with at first, but then became very rude, unhelpful, and not honest about costs as time went on. I lived out of town and when his quote for counters came at a significantly larger cost then he originally quoted, would not help me find a suitable replacement for a rental and only guided me to places with no pictures to use. He then CHOSE the counters without my approval and was dishonest about the cost to put them in, asking me for an additional $6k months later that somehow "wasn't on the invoice". From speaking with others in Santa Barbara this is a typical experience. If you choose him, account for 150% or so of the price he quoted you initially. My tenant is also a handyman and was inspecting his crews work. He said he had to be on top of them to mount the cabinets correctly, and somehow storage space and cabinets just disappeared. If he hadn't been onsite I think it would have been very poorly constructed.
