Me and my husband visited Oteo for the first time on Friday night. First let me state that the food was delicious, minus the dessert. My rating is more for the service. We made reservations for 6:30, when we got there the place was packed, which isn't hard since it is so small. It took about five minutes for someone to acknowledge us, but once we were finally greeted we were seated. After ten minutes of sitting at the table, we finally had a server come and take our order. I ordered the tacos, my husband the empanadas and for an appetizer the queso fundido. We waited for our meal for 45 minutes. We had no idea that the portion size was this small, two small tacos... thank goodness we ordered the appetizer, oh wait! That never came. When we asked about it when she delivered our entree we were told that they were out of that appetizer. Knowing that we wouldn't get full off of this portion size, we ordered another plate for each of us, as well as the cronut desert. In the meantime, a party that arrived when we did, were sat next to us. They waited to be seated for 45min. When they were seated they were immediately brought drinks and two queso fundido appetizers, something that we were told they were out of when we ordered it 45 minutes ago, they also received their food before we got our second plate of food, which again we ordered BEFORE they were seated. We waited ANOTHER 45 min. for our second plate of food to arrive. During this time, no server came to check on us. When our food finally arrived, I asked the server about the appetizer and pointed out that the table that was sat 45 minutes after we were got the same appetizer. She fumbled for her words as she tried to explain that she just told us what she was told to say and that the neighboring table had reservations. I explained to her that so did we and that we had now been here for 1 1/2 hours to get FOUR TACOS. I had NO IDEA that you could make reservations for your food and I think that it is ridiculous. We were lied to. They finally brought us the desert that we ordered and she let us know that it was on the house. Gee how nice. It was disgusting and hard as a rock. The best thing about the desert was the raspberry used to garnish the top. It was dry, tasted like a burnt donut and had no cream type filling in the middle like it was described. While the tacos were actually very tasty, they are hardly worth an hour and half wait, a bill for almost $50 and being lied to. Maybe I would recommend this place if you ordered it to go, or if you 'reserve' your food before you are seated because evidently you can do that here. Probably one of the worst dining experiences that I have had in years. read more

Great stuff. The steak tacos with avocado topping are a fave. As are the lobster tacos when you can get them. Queso fundido is a must, the plantains are awesome, and the kale salad and fruit salad are great as well. Cronuts are sinfully good also. Portions are smallish but high quality. read more

Took our family of 5 (2 adults, 2 kids, 1 baby) here for lunch. We sampled a little bit of everything on their lunch menu. Platano macho is amazing. The quesadilla with avocado and just a pinch of salt was delicious. The steak tacos with jalapeños and apple straws were my favorite but the chicken empenada, chicken taco and avocado taco were all fantastic. Each one had a unique flavor that makes it really hard to pick a favorite. Then to top it all off we had "cronuts". It was a donut with some kind of custard. Delicious. We will most definitely be back next time we are in the area. read more

Oteo is an excellent date spot. The food is interesting and well made. Very tasty. It is, however very expensive, so it's not a great place to take the family. We took our three young children there for lunch and even with a lot of sharing it was over $65. With that caveat, however, I do recommend it. read more

It was fun. I enjoyed the atmosphere. I'm not a foodie (which is probably why my rating is 4 star so take it with a grain of salt) so I wasn't totally 'into it'. I appreciated the flavors and what they were doing with them. Very creative. I loved the atmosphere and the music playing when we went. The cronut is AMAZING. But portion size to price isn't worth it IMO. I would go back for an appetizer and a chat but that's about it. read more

YUM! Oteo is a breath of fresh air for Mexican food. It's authentic and different from any other Mexican place in the area. The place feels family-owned but is kept up and cleaned like a 5-star chain. The chef came out and greeted my party and even gave us samples of the ceviche, which is amazing. honestly- great food, presentation and understated style restaurant. I would have rated 4 (or possibly even 5) stars but you could really use more friendly / capable lunch waiter. I have been here for dinner and the staff is great! came in for lunch and the waiting staff really changed our experience from a positive to negative one. the waiter with the beard struggled to understand a table of English speakers, spoke so softly that we struggled to hear him, had a less than welcoming demeanor and burned my hands while failing to tell me a plate was hot until I was already gripping it. he hovered over each patron while we processed the payment / tip on our cards- really uncomfortable. LOVE oteo's food and atmosphere. I would definitely come here more, but the waiting staff makes a huge difference in how often I come. read more

When We come to town Oteo is always our go to FINE Dinning spot. Their gourmet tacos are all full of so much fresh flavor. When we got there they had a few tables and we expected to have a wait, but we actually were served in less that 10-15 minutes. The server was really attentive and was really personable. We always leave wanting more not because it wasn't enough but because it's so tasteful. This isn't just another Mexican Chain restaurant. This is a million times better! read more

The entrees were really tasty--tender meat, and good flavor combinations. However, the overall experience was very poor. The queso fundido and the quesadilla were nondescript, and the ambience and service were both terrible. We went for lunch, and you would have thought we were entering a bar. The music (or rather, the hideous combination of sounds masquerading as music) was so loud we couldn't hear each other, much less our server. The restaurant is in a strip mall, and the acoustics of the space amplify everything from the conversations of adjacent diners to the aforementioned "music." Our server informed us that they were out of ice, so we skipped soft drinks. I understand that ice machines break, but I can't understand why someone wasn't sent to the grocery store to pick up some ice for the day. Next, our server informed us that the normal cloth napkins were unavailable because their laundry service didn't deliver them. Again, I understand that this was out of their control, but I don't understand why they chose to use bathroom paper towels rather than actual paper napkins from a grocery store. Really tacky. The chairs at Oteo are uncomfortable hard wood with no padding. There's little decor, none of which is attractive or inviting. The menu contains almost no description of the food, and our server didn't fill in the gaps when asked directly. The service in general, while polite, was inadequate and painfully slow. Finally, while the quality of the food is good, the quantity is lacking. Some chips and salsa, or some beans or other side dish, would go a long way to making it feel like a complete meal. If Oteo's food was served in a better location with some attention to detail, I'd give it double this rating. But sadly, the experience left a lot to be desired. read more

This place has great food. I highly recommend it. The food is organic with grass fed meats. Sometime that makes the food grose, but their food is so tasty. Everything I have had there is wonderful. When to Oteo this evening. It's not your typical Mexican restaurant. It's more like 'New Age' Mexican. There is no decor that make you feel like you are in a Mexican restaurant. It was 'taco Tuesday' so you get 3 tacos not 2. The tacos were tasty but small. The menu is very limited, not many choices. Prices are high. We received very good service. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the food. Not a good restaurant for a hearty eater. read more

This is not your mammas Mexican food. Bold flavors and colors, no chips and salsa but what they do is fabulous. The tacos so good! I had hangar steak, chicken and pork. All three had very different flavor profiles but oh so good! Started with the queso fundido, don't miss this! Excellent! Also had the quesadilla which was good. My wife had the sope's and they were excellent as well. If you are looking for heavy beans and rice Mexican, keep going. If you are willing to try something new, you will be pleased! read more

GF and I really wanted to love this place, it had been on our to-do list for quite some time, but we walked away sadly disappointed and not in a rush to return. In our quest to find the best tacos of Utah Valley we stopped in here for a weekday lunch. The granny smith salad was a nice fresh start to the meal, but tasted more like a sugary dessert than a starter. We each ordered a variety of tacos that were visually appealing, yet lacked any extraordinary flavor. Of the meat, the carnitas had the best flavor, but it and all the other meat we ordered was buried under a pile of vegetables and other ingredients that added visual flair, but did nothing for taste. "Gourmet tacos" as we call them try to add flair to a deliciously simple meal, yet the flair just ruins it. Worst of all, after three tacos each and sharing the granny smith salad we left hungry and out $30. For now, Brasas in Provo keeps its position on top of the taco ratings. read more

We've loved Oteo (and Tortilla Bar) for years; been very loyal customers--talked it up to all of our friends. Spent lots and lots there. We've loved the food and, just as importantly, loved how we always felt treated like family--warmly and with grace. Tonight we took my parents and my wife's parents, all four in their late 70s, to celebrate a special family event. Plus we wanted to show off one of our favorite eateries. As the other customers left the chef, whom we've interacted with many many times through the years kept turning the music louder and louder. We were trying to have a conversation and the older folks had a harder and harder time hearing each other. It was getting frustrating. We asked them at least four times to turn the music down, and although each time they did, it just barely. The chef was clearly mad about being asked, and obviously wanted us to know it. He just didn't care what we thought, or that a lovely evening was being ruined. We were spending nearly $200 at his business, but it was more important to him to have loud music. I was beyond disappointed. This is not the same place we've loved. Not sure I'll ever go back. read more
