Food is top notch and hospitality warm and welcoming in this unassuming restaurant tucked in NJ. Each dish was better than the next - creamy shrimp, chicken rice, duck special and the incredible egg tarts and Nutella empanadas. I'm dreaming about the sticky toffee cake. Would love to come back!

Amazing place, amazing food, amazing people. Try the grilled chicken or the peri peri (spicy). You can't go wrong with either.

From the pictures, this looks like more of a take out restaurant. Are there tables to eat in? How's the atmosphere?

There are tables for eat in. Looks more like a diner than an upscale restaurant. However, the food is top notch. You won't be sorry.

The parking was actually full when we arrived, possibly because of the bar using the same lot. But there is an elevated connected lot for the bowling alley that has plenty of parking. I have to say that the best thing about this place is the service: everyone was very friendly, and quick to attend us. Food was great, except maybe the flake fish (first course). Seemed more Spanish to me than Portuguese though. Portions were huge... actually had leftovers from a dish, which is the first for me from a tasting menu. The prices were reasonable In terms of why I'm giving this 4 star instead of 5: -we were seated at the "Chefs counter", but did not really have a view of the prep, which was really far away. Basically could just see the fireplace. The sister restaurant Heirloom is a much better chef's counter setup where you are seeing everything -Dishes seemed to be regular menu type dishes (just smaller portions), as opposed to super interesting types that you would expect from a tasting menu -Beverage pairing was okay... didn't really love the wines For these reasons, I'd likely return, but just stick to the regular menu/ experience.

Let me share my last night experience, arrived at restaurant at 8:53 pm (restaurant closes at 10pm), was not crowded probably 4 tables on the outside patio, where they were showing a World Cup game. We got seated quickly and put the drinks order in right away, and then was when everything went south, in not more than a minute the server came to take our order, we ask for a couple more minutes as we just got the menu and were looking at it, then right behind the table 3 servers start to talk bad about us and saying things like they better hurry up, we need to go home to watch the game, tell them that we only have quick bites or else we not going home tonight ( all in Spanish but we DO understand the language) . Will never go back to this place or recommend it. It's a shame places like this ruin the reputation of great Portuguese restaurants. Also menu is extremely overpriced compared to other Portuguese restaurants. Stay away..

However, my utensils were dirty when I sat down. the waiter apologized right away, but it made me wonder about the rest. The bread and salad were complimentary and both were really good. We started with a pitcher of red sangria, which everyone enjoyed. For entrées, we ordered the bacon-wrapped chicken (the sauce was tasty, but the chicken itself was dry), the braised short ribs (very good), and the seafood rice, which was delicious. The shrimp avo was just okay. Overall, I'd recommend the place for the friendly service and good food; just make sure your utensils are clean before you start eating.

The restaurant feels bright, modern, and spotless, with white tablecloths and that perfect balance between fine dining and comfort. We ordered the Picadinho and the Seafood Mix, and both were incredible. The Picadinho had tender meat, shrimp, chouriço, and peppers -- perfectly seasoned and full of flavor. The Seafood Mix came loaded with clams, mussels, shrimp, and lobster in a rich, savory sauce that paired perfectly with their fluffy rice and homemade chips. The lobster was a bit on the firm side, but still flavorful and not bad at all overall. I also had a Caipirinha, and even though our server mentioned not being completely sure how to make it, it came out amazing -- refreshing, balanced, and surprisingly perfect. For dessert, the chocolate mousse had a nice flavor, though it was slightly grainy in texture, like powdered chocolate. Service was excellent -- friendly, attentive, and quick without feeling rushed. You can tell the staff and kitchen take real pride in what they do. Note: Dinner service starts at 3:00 PM, and prices increase slightly after that, so if you're looking for a lighter check, plan for lunch. Overall, Avo's Ria Mar is a beautiful spot with authentic Portuguese dishes, generous portions, and a refined yet welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommend
