Overall, a decent experience at Otobo Sushi -- I'd give it about a 3.2/5 stars. -The miso soup was good, but the flavor was very light. -The three rolls on the plate in photo were decent (forgot the names) -The Volcano Roll was a bad idea (about a 0.7/5 stars for me personally), but if you order it, I'd definitely recommend asking to try the sauce on top first since the flavor may not be for everyone. I had a great experience at Otobo Sushi. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. They created a warm and inviting space from the moment I walked in. This restaurant has been on my list for some time and I was glad I was able to check it out while visiting the Chicago area. I was pleasantly surprised by their sushi of the day featuring sweet potato, a unique twist. I am always down for anything with sweet potato. The combination of the sweet potato's creamy texture with the fresh ingredients was outstanding. It's a must try and I genuinely hope they make it a permanent addition to their menu. THE GYOZA NEXT DOOR This neighborhood sushi spot in Bolingbrook has kept our bellies happy for years. About once a month, my wife gets a particular craving and I find myself looking at the menu for Poke Bros, KO Sushi, or Otobo. The latter restaurant is in a strip mall at the intersection of Weber Rd & Hassert near a Dairy Queen and Subway. We've dined in 3-4 times since 2020 but our carryout orders must be in the tens by now. Seasons come and go, yet our appetizer order remains the same: a couple miso soups ($3), edamame ($4), and fried gyoza (6 for $6). Occasionally we'll get the vegetable tempura ($6) that includes zucchini, mushrooms, sweet potato, and onion. The shrimp shumai (8pc for $6) are tasty, too. The rainbow roll (8pc for $13) is a standard California roll topped with tuna, salmon, whitefish, and avocado. I like the Chicago Fire Roll (5pc for $10) which is tempura'd spicy tuna in chili oil. The 'Godzilla' roll (8pcs for $14) is one of our favorites, and the Boston roll (6pc for $8) has shrimp, cucumber and spicy mayo. For signature maki, we've gotten the 'Chop Chop!' roll (6pc for $13) that's deep-fried with crab stick, cream cheese, spicy salmon, and unagi sauce. The 'Jumanji' roll (8pc for $15) has shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado and spicy orange sauce. The Mexican roll (5pc for $12) uses yellowtail, tuna, cilantro, jalapeno and sriracha. Otobo also has pan fried noodles (yakisoba & udon), fried rice, ramen (tan-tan & miso), and a poke bowl for $15. The chicken katsu ($15) is fine. They have a modest dessert menu, including mochi (2 for $4), ice cream sandwiches, and mushi cake. Bread = 4 Circuses = 4.5 The staff are very friendly and we've never had to wait long for food. They have a full bar, though I usually wind up getting a tall Sapporo draft and a hot sake or green tea. The inside is decorated nicely and their outdoor patio is great from May-September. I suppose the only reason for 4* instead of 5* is that KO Sushi gives us a free roll every time we order, and Otobo doesn't. My wife thinks they have better quality sushi here, but I find them to be equal. Some days, it's a veritable coin toss between KO and Otobo. * TL;DR * So you like places that are local, eh? Is being 3/4ths of a mile away 'local' enough for ye? From our house to Otobo, Google Maps says it's a 2-minute drive......it'd be even faster if I drove across the pond. *ACTIVATE HOVER MAZDA* Otobo is definitely a 4-1/2 star place, however I've yet to find stellar value in their offerings or be blown away by a creative roll (like at RA Sushi). Seeing them at an aggregate 4.1* on Yelp makes me feel validated in my decision to go with 4*. We like Otobo, we recommend them, and we'll be placing an order again very soon, I'm sure of it. read more

I took a good friend of mine out for dinner for her birthday, and we absolutely loved OTOBO. The food was excellent, and the owner and staff were just wonderful. We enjoyed the Tuna Tartar, which was outstanding. We also had a Volcano Roll and some of their signature cocktails. Then, we had the fried Oreo dessert, which altered my life in the best way possible. This is a spot you should have on your list of places to eat and support. OTOBO is our go to location when we are in the mood for sashimi. Their platters are fresh and have a nice variety. We also enjoy their tuna roll, which makes a nice accompanyment. We do takeout, and everything is always ready on time and our order is complete. We prefer regular rice to the regular sushi rice, but I call them and there is no problem with substitution. OTOBO is in the one shopping center in Bolingbrook on Weber Road. Going there it's never been that busy. This is in the same plaza as Pita Zone. Amazingly it's never been busy. It could just be the current situation but the parking lot is always full. There's other places in this shopping center like Pita Zone. Along with sushi were the drinks. They have Japanese beer and harder stuff. I got the Blue Wolf, one of the cocktails that sounded good. It's $5 at happy hour. This is made with Cruzan Strawberry Rum, blueberries, and lemonade. As for the rolls we got the best sounding one. We both got the Vegan Roll. It's $9 and it's a pretty small one. This has avocado, cucumber, mango, and oisho sauce. Had a nice lunch at OTOBO. Stopped here for a business lunch. Was impressed over all and was inline with what reviews I found on yelp prior to stopping in. The Holy shishito peppers for a starter for the three of us and really enjoyed those. Not to hot at all... and the sauce was a nice smooth touch. I was in sushi mode.. and went with a couple rolls. First up was the Sumo. A thin tempura roll which was not to heavy like some others. I didn't care for the cut on the roll since they were falling apart but figured out the best way to enjoy them. OTOBO is the place that got me to start liking sushi. I first went here with my dad and sister, and they got the avalanche roll. It has mozzarella cheese melted on top of it--which none of us have ever heard of before. They convinced me to have a piece when I never had sushi before. The only seafood it has in it is shrimp tempura, which was perfect to start out with as it has very little fish/seafood flavor, and plenty of other flavors. They have good miso soup, and the crabby jalapeños are a wonderful appetizer. Since my pallet has expanded, I have gone back and tried many other rolls which have all been wonderful, but the avalanche is still my favorite. There were only two other tables taken when I arrived, so I got seated quickly, but waited about ten minutes before a friendly server came by with water and to take my order. Food came out quickly but the rice didn't seem fresh. It had the same texture and taste as refrigerated grocery store sushi. The fish and avocado seemed fine but the stale rice made it hard to enjoy. I waited another ten minutes for my check when I was done, then the server put the card reader on the table and said goodbye. Which was fine, except that the card reader was semi-unresponsive and I felt awkward troubleshooting it without my server in sight to help, but after 3 tries, it registered my card.
