For starters they squeezed 13 of us into a table near the window that looks into the kitchen when they could've put other tables together so we had more room...the restaurant was empty anyway on a Sunday. maybe they thought they were doing us a favor by putting us at that table but was ridiculous! The one rude waitress proceeded to rattle off the lengthy list of the specials of the day and expected us to remember them. And she did not provide any prices for the items. Why can't someone just type up the specials and make copies to provide. You are not going to sell your specials if someone doesn't even remember what they are 2 minutes after you've explained them. People generally need to read and reread items on the menu before they make a choice. Use common sense! So we knew on Sundays the German menu was available and when I asked waitress, she rudely said to me "well you have to ask for that menu". Like duh!! What??!!! Why would you have to ask for that menu and what if I didn't know about the menu, then you were never going to sell anything on that menu? It's your Sunday special and you should be handing it out without someone asking!!! So dumb really!! My nephew ordered what I think is the lobster tails and he was very specific asking what kind of sauce and any other items that came with? When she told him that it was a lemon butter sauce he was OK with that. It came with a completely different sauce! Wow, how is that even possible? Either the waitress wasn't properly informed on the preparation or the chef decided to change it. So that had to be sent back and remade. Unbelievable!! The saga continue ...anyone who ordered the items from the German menu were given an option of salad or soup. Then they came back out later and said the soup was not available because the chef didn't like the way it came out. Not really sure how you can mess a potato leek soup. I think there's like four ingredients in it ‍. So my sister said she would have a small cup of the onion soup instead, and the waitress told her no you can't have that soup only the lobster (weird soup) or the salad. That is so crazy. Why can't she have the onion soup? the waitress went and asked the chef and he said yes, she can have the onion soup. Oh gee, thanks! That's what you should've said in the first place! Mind you this place was not crowded at all, not surprising so if he was worried he was gonna run out of onion soup I doubt that was going to happen because it was not that good. I never had an onion soup with a thing that was almost equivalent to smashed piece of white bread cut into a circle instead of a piece of hearty bread like it's supposed to have. Then we asked them to split the bill into three checks at the end and that was somehow not possible. I don't know how they can't just go in the computer system and ring up 1/3 of the bill three times. She said it was a new system, but how do you go backwards in technology if it's new? 98% of restaurants can do that. Maybe the head chef has some chefs in training back there, but the whole experience was just a nightmare. We were frequent diners when it was The Octopus's Garden and loved it. Have been back here after the new owners. They revamped and redecorated extremely well. We have come twice to Ott's for a family celebration and it Just "okay". Unfortunately this was not even ok. The bread was served per person with a choice of breads. Server came from a large Table and there were 2 pieces left of The same. Just lazy. And bread must have been previously frozen as center was cold. They screwed up my wife's order pretty bad and it was another 15 minutes for It to come back. Big difference Between broiled and fried. No efforts to make Anything right. We go to Otts when visiting family in the area. It's always been very good. I know there is a new chef since last time we've been there. The menu looked so scrumptious as it reflected traditional 4th of July meals. Lots of fish which I love. I ordered the lobster tail with flounder, shrimp and scallops. Presentation was great. But I was very disappointed that all of the fish except for the scallops were very mushy. No firmness at all. Mushy shrimp and flounder. I could only eat the stuffed lobster. For the $65 price this was outrageous and enough that I'll be skipping Otts on my next visit. read more

We went for a girls night out celebrating August Bdays. We sat at a great round table that sat 7 of us comfortably. Our server was amazing. She was professional, sweet and knew the menu and specials inside and out. Very impressive. A few of us ordered the Macadamia crusted Cod. It was yummy! A few ordered the short ribs and just raved that they were so tender and flavorful. We split the very large wedge salad into two as it was a generous serving. I saved this review but it is what it is. I would totally try it AGAIN. But for what I got - what I received - It truly tears me up to do this because I didn't even get to go to their adorable location ! Being full vegetarian now in Manahawkin, NJ is basically the worst. I don't want to just eat pizza or pasta / steamed veggies and fake products that taste like cheese I had seen this restaurant and was excited to order because The app VeganCow said it was one of the few vegan/Vegetarian restaurants in the area - so I was ddssowwwwn to try !! To my dismay maybe all they have going for then is the " visual portion " honestly. Because I ordered the Harvest Beet Salad ( $17) cough. Cough. Cough. Which I ordered this all to go ( I LOVE Beets so again I know they can be costly I get this salad whenever I go out .. usually to ACTUAL Russian restaurants - where I will at the bottom of this put an actual real price of a beet salad , so that people know how they are being ripped of by the owner ) You maybe be thinking " but Luisa the salad MUST have come with a little extra of something .. " well seeing as I paid for this food to be delivered to me I did not get the pleasure of the experience of whatever " visual experience " a couple of BEETS , lettuce , rADISH , literally a spindle of FETA in a small container " Deff worth $17 ^ Wait this gets better. There was nothing whatsoever special about these coconut shrimp and they forgot dipping sauce. - unless they are too special and these shrimp ride solo I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone MY age you know the actual people who will live on , have children , keep making that money YO , and sustain these failing restaurants in the entire Manahawkin , Barnegat - let's just say it OCEAN COUNTY area. ......I'd like to be Under the sea In an octopus' garden With you..... This very good restaurant seems to have 2 names, the one on the Yelp page and the one from the song lyrics. I kind of like Octopus' garden better.... but onto the review. I was looking for a great seafood byob and exhausted most of the ones in my area, not that there were many. A Yelp friend recently visited this spot and my interest was piqued. Other Yelpers had great things to say as well. It's a bit of a drive so I planned an early dinner here. The building is new and of fairly grand stature for this area, tastefully decorated with lots of space inside and very high ceilings. An open view of the kitchen is always promising, but dining at the chefs table did not seem an option with a group of 2. We could still see some of the magic from our table. And I think that is my main take away from this first visit.....the chefs here are uber talented. And not afraid to venture into unique creations or ingredients. My co diner selected apps of burrata and also the beet salad, and for an entree a special of the evening, Skrei cod over a squid ink seafood risotto. I went with a special app, German potato pancakes, followed by Manhattan clam chowder and the crab cakes as my entree. Dishes arrived pretty quickly, the burrata was plated nicely with watercress and quality tomatoes, I really enjoyed my potato pancakes. They were crispy and played well with the apple compote on bottom, and the fresh slaw on top. My only complaint was in the size and price, I was envisioning nice chunky cakes, these were silver dollar size, and the $18 price tag left me wondering if caviar was omitted by mistake? The beet salad was well received and probably shareable, and my clam chowder was above reproach. It was loaded with tender clams and diced russets, the broth was silky and not too salty. This is a best in class chowder! The cod entree was done very well, the fish was sweeter and more flavorful than other types of cod I've encountered, and it was perfectly cooked, the sides were equally well thought out. I didn't love my crab cakes. Let's start with the sides, the veg medley underneath was excellent, the haystack potatoes on top were a great flavor and texture component too. But the lump crab in the cakes was lacking. In one cake only very small pieces could be found amongst the lower grade crab filler, the second cake had one nice big chunk that I could positively identify as LCM. That being said the flavor was good, texture good, and really could have been a contender. Alas, these were kind of forgettable. Of note is the interesting specials, and I think that may be the key in having great experiences here. I had been daydreaming about crab all day so I was kind of locked into my choice. There were 3 other options I almost ordered and that I'm still thinking about. Service was friendly and professional with Ryan, and to be honest, I should have went with one of his recommendations. I have eaten here a handful of times now and every time I do, dinner has been an amazing dining experience. Recently, I had reservations for dinner for 4 on a Friday evening. Unfortunately I had some medical issues that forced me to cancel the reservation. I called and left a message indicating I had to cancel the reservation for medical reasons. Based on the reviews, I was anticipating a great night ahead. Unfortunately, I was not super impressed with our meal. 1st: the waitress assigned to our table clearly had no experience before, which is fine, but she should have had someone with her to observe and guide her through the process. We could barely hear her speak, and we heard the waiter at the next table over share the specials which she neglected to inform us about or at least describe them appropriately. Nevertheless, we had no idea what to order based on the specials so we just ordered off the regular menu. 2nd: The food was mediocre at best. The seafood I ordered was mushy - no seafood should be mushy. That means its either BAD or not cooked right. The waitress didn't even offer to get a manager or comp my meal (especially since it was expensive). Terrible service. Needless to say, I had a bad experience and won't be returning. Honestly, if we had a different waiter or waitress, we may have had a better experience, even with the mushy fish. read more

They had a fixed menu for Easter Sunday and the choices were horrible No where did it say fixed menu on website wouldn't have come. Deer meat and meat loaf for example. We had the calamari and shrimp and it was tasteless and tough. I had a bone in filet that was so small and overpriced I felt I was robbed. It came with soggy small potatoes and an over cooked vegetable. There was six of us we finished our meals and finally my father in-laws meal came out. They offered him a free desert which was stale. For the prices they charge they need to get a proper chef. This was our second time here and I'm sorry we gave them a 2 nd chance.
