I visited here with my bestie for her birthday weekend to grab lattes for a little energy boost before exploring in downtown Chicago. The café seemed cute but was quite crowded and gave off a busy NYC vibe. So many people (often with laptops) occupied tables with multiple chairs but only one or two people seated at each, so unfortunately, we couldn't find any space to enjoy our drinks and headed back outside as soon as we picked up our order. Was looking for coffee shops in the area and happened to find this cafe, and I'm so glad I went. The inside is beautiful, with big front windows and a tin ceiling giving it a very vintage chicago storefront look. The decor is lovely, lots of art and plants. And the staff are so friendly. I ordered a karak tea and a cheese/zaatar manakeesh. Both were so delicious! The cheese and zaatar was the perfect combo, and it paired wonderfully with the tea. The drinks are high quality and flavorful without being overly sweet--huge bonus that they offer sugar-free options like caramel and vanilla without sacrificing taste. You can also tell they're intentional with their spices (the cardamom hits). Their food menu is surprisingly extensive for a café--definitely more than just pastries. Located in the heart of the river north community, oud cafe stands out with its white exterior and bold letters. Street parking in this area is not the most friendliest but can be easily found. Oud is also easily accessible by train and bus! I came at 7:15 am and I thought no one would be inside but there were already four people seated and working. Love love love that they have early hours of operation (7 am weekdays and 8 am weekends). I ordered a hot caramel latte, spinach manakeesh and Dubai chocolate cookie. It was $19.00 for my total. Some people may think this is a lot but I thought this was reasonably priced because Oud is located in downtown Chicago where the average price for a standard 12 oz latte typically ranges from $4.50 to $7.00, depending on the café and any specialty ingredients. Generally everything is more expensive in downtown Chicago. It's very unrealistic to assume you'll spend very little for a coffee and dessert in downtown Chicago. Aside from a few exceptions, the majority of Oud's pastry items are huge, almost the size of my hand (took a picture for comparison). I did see there was a mixed box of baklavas and other small middle eastern deserts for $26.00 but even that I can understand and justify because I've been to enough bakeries that serve baklava and various specialty middle eastern hand crafted desserts to know that those are charged by the pound. The manakeesh was so savory and so soft- I could tell it was made fresh. One manakeesh is not enough to completely satisfy you so save yourself and order two because I promise you that it's THAT good. The latte passed my froth and espresso standards but the one thing that took away from the experience was that they use caramel syrup instead of caramel sauce when creating a caramel latte. I should've asked for that- not their fault for not knowing my preference so next time will ask for that. As for the Dubai chocolate cookie- Omgosh, my only regret is not getting a box of these cookies. Not only are they huge but they are so heavy (because of the pistachio inside) and SO. MOUTH. WATERING. GOOD. Without even being warmed up, they are theeeeee softest cookie ever with a good chunk of pistachio inside, you can taste the crunch. If you don't try this, you're missing out. Anyone who complains about the price of any Dubai chocolate products has obviously not attempted to make them at home because most retailers charge upwards of $12- 20 for a jar of pistachio OR bought the Dubai chocolate bars (if you order bolci Dubai chocolate on Amazon, it's almost $13 for 100g). I cannot wait to go back and try their Dubai chocolate cake and pistachio cake- they looked so good. Just fyi, I split the cookie between my husband and me - easily could share all of their desserts with anyone. I felt very at peace walking into this cafe, loved all the art work and setup. It's a very cozy space and could completely understand why there were so many people working here so early- quiet and everyone minds their own business. The employees were very nice and I appreciate that there were three employees working at 7 am. Most specialty coffee shops open up with one person managing everything until everyone pours in- not here. Highly recommend you check this place out - I know I will be going back for more! read more

I came here with a party of six for a pre-spa day breakfast. Even at nearly noon, this place was packed with a line almost out the door. The space was beautifully decked out in Palestinian decor with beautiful ouds hanging on the wall. When you walk up to the counter, you are greeted by a sprawling pastry case full of pastries from all over the Middle East. They are gorgeously displayed. I opted for a hot vanilla oat milk matcha latte and everything bagel with cream cheese. I didn't want to load up on sweets ahead of the spa, but I did get to sample the knafeh, which was delicious. The service was organized and efficient from the front to the back. Unfortunately, there wasn't a ton of seating initially, so we occupied the open parts of the sidebar until a table opened. While my sandwich looked amazing, unfortunately I was unable to enjoy it as I ordered it without chipotle mayo and it was drenched in it. The staff were super friendly when my husband took the sandwich back in and showed the mistake. They were more than willing to fix another sandwich but due to the wait time we were unable to wait. It's a modern looking cafe and there are great pastry options. The cafe is Palestinian-owned, with several regional food and drink options! Straightforward service. I tried a manakeesh for the first time, and opted for the za'tar & cheese one. This was my first time tasting za'tar as well. It was a light option--would love to try the spinach and beef ones some time! The coffee I got ("the nas" mint cafe) wasn't very strong nor had a strong mint taste either--it felt like a regular latte with some mint leaves added. The latte had a smooth taste though. Might give the lattes another try and go with the salted caramel latte next. I was on my way to work from the Chicago and Franklin Brown line stop and needed a coffee. While I could have tried one of the many chain outposts, I was glad I didn't and instead tried something new. There was great curb appeal and a cut interior. I have come here a few times to study- a great plus to OUD is being open in the evening is that cafes normally aren't open too late! I have had their egg sandwich, which was a tad salty but was still tasty! As for coffee, I am a firm believer that they take true time and care into their brew. I am especially a fan of their rose coffee. There are plenty of seats within the restaurant, making it an ideal place to study or get work done.
