I ordered a half of sandwich with Honey Turkey and American yellow cheese with the works. The place was busy today so the wait was around 15 minutes. The place is sort of small but it gets the job done. The service was very good and friendly. It was worth the wait because they use quality cold cuts and fresh produce. I have been coming to our Hero's since my years back in High School! From 1994-1998, our Hero's was our after school place to be! The owner is absolutely amazing and so very nice and friendly. And he still is the owner!! It definitely brings back memories every time I come back and have his amazing and fresh sandwiches. I definitely recommend! The bread and meat are always so fresh and just the right amount of meat. You have the option to also add your choice of chips and a drink and the prices are reasonable! Excellent sandwich deli located in Mcginley Square section of Jersey City. I haven't been here in a long time and stopped here during work for a sandwich. The food hasn't changed and it's still very good. It's a small shop with a small selection of sandwiches. The cold cuts were fresh and the whole hero is huge. There was no way I could finish whole sandwich in one sitting. If your not that big of an eater the half hero will be fine for you. Best part about the sandwich was the bread. There are no misses here. You can literally order anything on the menu, or any way you want to mix and match your sub, and it is top tier. People dont stay in business for over 50 years by accident. This is a staple in jersey city, especially to mcginley square and my alma mater, Hudson Catholic HS. Our Hero is a part of my childhood. As a kid my grandma would always get me a sandwich when she had to go to the bank in Mcginley Square. The place still looks the same. It's an old school sub shop nothing fancy but man o man are those sandwiches good!! The best meat and bread still to this day!!! My moms senior group caters their sandwiches and salads for meetings. It does take a while, but I do understand why after going inside.. they really make sure you're getting what you want and are patient. Living in Jersey City for many years, I just never knew about this place. I went here for lunch because of the reviews of other Yelpers. Its located next to the farmer's grocery stand on Bergen Ave and across from Hudson Catholic High School. There's no parking so you have to find a meter spot or one of the off street parking on Glenwood Ave. You could almost miss it if you don't pay attention, no flashy signs just a very good sandwich shop. Inside has about a dozen tables or so. Also, this is a cash only place so make sure you have cash with you. They have chips and sodas on the side available for purchase as well. Looking at the board I see that they have all the deli meats that you can choose from. Their items includes ham, salami, turkey, capicola, tuna, roast beef, and others. The meats are freshly sliced as you order not packaged like some other franchise sandwich stores. The vegetables are also freshly thin sliced and offer extra toppings like sweet peppers. My selection was the number 10 "Our Hero" sandwich that includes roast beef, turkey, capicola, and salami. I topped it off with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, mayo, vinegar, sweet peppers, and oregano. The moment I bit into the sandwich it was quite tasty, better than Blimpie and Subway. Overall, I enjoyed the sandwich and will be coming back again. read more

They have a great selection of fresh deli meats and fresh breads. You can choose from a whole or half size sub and of course all the different fillings/toppings. I particularly enjoyed the hot/sweet peppers and raw onions. I had the honey turkey, which they sliced to a medium thickness and jam-packed it between the wheat bread. Of course I had to have my oil and vinegar drenched inside as well. This sub CANNOT be compared to Subway or Blimpie. It's WAY better and honestly cheaper than those chain spots. Easily the best subs I've ever had and nothing even comes close. My older brother and sister used to take me here since I was a toddler, so this place has huge value to me. I would even come during my days off in college because I missed it so much. The bread is really the winner here. It's hard to get subs with soft bread (I know, it's debatable bc some people love that crunchy Italian bread) and get it somewhere that packs in the meat and cheese. Al does not skimp out ever! And he has a wide selection of meats and cheeses so you can really customize to your heart's content. And he cuts very thin so when you get that first bite, it's easy to chew. My siblings also go for the ham, salami and cheese. We do mayo both sides (important: he uses heavy mayo so it's extra delicious) with lettuce, tomato, all the seasonings, extra vinegar and oil. Even if you opt for the wheat bread, it's so incredibly fluffy and delicious. In some cases, I prefer it over the white. The price is fair for what you get in the area. Freshly off the slicer and you get so much of it. Even my sister who hasn't been in a while was so convinced she found a better place in Englewood, but when I dropped off her usual order from here, she agrees that it's still the best. Our Heroes is where you get the most nostalgic subs, true to the core of what fresh, quality mom and pop shops can offer. The lines can be long during after school hours and weekends, but you know it's worth it. I wish I was around more often since I work in the city and their hours are the usual 9-6 and I never make it in time to get sandwiches. This place gets so many bonus points for being a classic mom and pop shop that serves up a solid deli sub with genuine kindness. Went in and got a #4 and it was all around what you would expect. The bread was soft and chewy, the meats fresh (although nothing spectacular, but hey it's a hero shop, not gourmet Italian import extravaganza), toppings fresh and service awesome. I got the sweet and hot peppers (couple cents extra) and it was just perfect for the price. Great value for sure. The owner/hero maker behind the counter is quiet but there's just a real sense of kindness and respect. I've been living in the area for almost 7 years and just recently found this place thanks to Yelp. My go to sub place is usually subway (I know boring), however I wanted to try something new so I looked up hero sandwiches and found Our Hero's. Let's start with the bread. They bake their bread fresh everyday. It was soft with a nice golden color. FYI, they also have whole wheat bread for those who are health conscious. Lol I settled for their "Our Hero" sandwich. It consisted of turkey, ham, salami, roast beef and cappacola along with your choice of cheese (I chose pepper jack). It did not have that synthetic taste I get from subway subs (which is subjective). At first I wanted to order a whole sandwich but settled for the half. Boy am I glad I did! I got a good sandwich that was pretty enjoyable, but it wasn't as great as I was expecting. They don't have as much variety as the local sub shops I've been to- no smoked turkey (to their credit, they do have 3 other kinds of turkey), no cheddar (what!?), and no pepper jack. They do still offer a few different meat and cheese options as well as different kinds of veggies. You can order your sandwich hot or cold. My turkey sub with provolone, sweet peppers, and lettuce was tasty. Nothing exceptional that would make me coming back, but for sure a better option than Subway, Blimpie, etc. I've tried to come here a few times before and they were always closed (it was usually later in the evening around 7 or 8) so I have no idea what their hours are but I do know that they are open on weekends. No delivery as far as I can tell and not much seating inside, but a great option if you are looking for a quick meal that is cheap but still good. Sooooooo good. I had to do the smacking my lips and kissing my fingers gesture after I devoured my sandwich. The sandwiches: we got the varsity (Turkey+Bacon) and alumni (Hot pastrami+Cheese). The meat is moist and tender and packed into the sandwich. No dry rubbery cold cuts here! The bread is pillow soft but holds all the weight of the ingredients well without collapsing on itself. No soggy bread here! All the accompaniments were fresh and full of flavor. No watery lettuce or bland tomatoes! Have to add sweet peppers to your sub. Just trust me! The shop: It is a hole in the wall shop with limited space especially due to covid. You might have to wait along the street a bit. There are only two people assembling the sandwiches so try to have some common sense and be patient. Assembling a GOOD sandwich takes TIME to make. And it is well worth the wait!!!! Economical. Delicious. Local. Way better then blimpies or subways. They may not have as much variety as the menu is very to the point. But it makes up for everything with the quality.
