We booked in March and they did not communicate that we would not have running water on our site and we booked a full hookup site! They said it was on the website in fine print. That is not helpful or obvious. There is also a utility of some sort on premises that has an extremely loud motor!! It goes on and off 24/7. We stayed there in 2021 and it was doing the same thing. We thought it would be fixed by now and that it surely was just a problem then.....but no....it is 2026 and still doing the same thing. Not a peaceful place unless you are staying far, away from that utility. They said it was a bad motor that needs to be fixed. Well, why don't they fix it? It has pretty views of the lake but we will not be staying there again until we make sure there's no loud utility and that we have FULL hookup.

Our 43' Solitude fit perfectly and they said it was their smallest site. I could tell how level when our outdoor kitchen and front storage area were both at the perfect height. We had enough room to park our 22' truck and another vehicle in our site although there is additional parking. Lots of shade through most of the day due to many mature trees. It is plenty dark and quiet there at night with hardly no light pollution near you can see almost all the stars you can see from earth. I suggest bringing quality binoculars or even a telescope to enjoy the stars. Check out the picture I took of the night sky from there with just an iPhone. There is an interstate near but it is not heavily traveled especially at night. You can barely hear it. Water & electric hookups only with a dump station. If your tanks can't hold during your time, you can bring a portable dump tank or they have a truck fitted with a dump tank to drain your tank. The owners are super nice and accommodating. Our 14 y/o son said it is now his favorite campground. Him and his friend got up early on their own every morning to go fishing in the stocked pond. Looks like we've found our new "go to" campground with beautiful picnic tables. Pricing is super reasonable. They said their intent and motivation was to create a campground like camping used to be without your neighbor within arms reach.

We stayed at the recently renovated Holiday House, and it was fantastic! There were 5 adults and 1 toddler, and we had so much space, with the little one able to even have her own room. And a big enough space that no one woke her when she went to bed earlier than the rest of us! From the patio lighting to the fire pit, it was just such an inviting experience. And everyone was so kind and helpful. While we're from the area, we came into town for a wedding in Paducah, and even though it was a little bit of a drive, I would do it 100x over to get to stay at Holiday Hills. No pool or pool chairs to lounge in . It is currently 85 degrees bright sunshine. On site dining is a joke. Same menu for lunch and dinner.

Still, I enjoyed my recent stay here and plan to return. Barkley Lodge is arguably the grandest in the state park system. Perched high above the lake with a glistening blue pool, each room faces the lake and has a view of the sunset. Speaking of rooms, they are currently renovating the east wing, but our west wing room looked refreshed. Renovations might still be a bit of a work in progress, as it looked like there was a space in the dresser for a mini fridge (but no fridge), and the updated counter in the bathroom was supported by a bare board with some visible screws. Housekeeping could use some improvements, as the toilet wasn't thoroughly cleaned when we arrived, and when I walked barefoot to the bed after my shower, I collected some animal hair on the bottoms of my feet. We also noticed that a couple of lightbulbs had burned out and not been replaced. The meals in the lodge were disappointing. I remember delicious buffets and a carving station while Mae Perdue played the organ and servers scurried around in crisp uniforms. Their attire is more casual now, with many in Barkley t-shirts or polos, and the buffet seemed sad. We skipped the buffet the first night in favor of a local restaurant after we walked through and were unimpressed with what was being served, and we felt underwhelmed (and a bit ripped off) when we got breakfast there the following morning. I asked my parents if the food in the lodge had been "meh" when we used to go there, and they both said that we always used to get the buffet and that it had been very good. There used to be a small coffee shop in the downstairs of the lodge, but it has been turned into the game room, and the old game room is now a room with information on local wildlife. What hasn't changed is the plethora of outdoor activities, the abundant wildlife, and the family-friendly activities all throughout the day. My husband and I were actually disappointed when we realized we had missed one of the educational sessions on local wildlife during our stay. Despite its shortcomings, I have a love for this place that runs deep. I hope that renovations mean that they are improving all around, as I would love to see Barkley recapturing the glory of days gone by.

The staff at the fuel dock takes great care of the boat and I can go to the ships store for any parts. They have the largest boat life around at 70 ton so big houseboats and yachts are not a problem. It is probably the most expensive marina around but the amenities make it worth it. They also have 3 swimming pools and condo rentals as well as boat rentals. AND a wedding/meetings venue on site.

Because everything in the area was booked, a Reserve America representative let me know which sites were available here on a first come first serve basis. We arrived at about 10pm on a Wednesday night. The sites that RA told me were available were luckily empty, but blocked off by orange cones. We went to one of the camp hosts to confirm that we were ok to stay the weekend there and he approved and said to move the cones and settle up in the morning. Because it was dark, we had no idea what the surroundings of the site looked like. Luckily, the next morning, we found out it wasn't too bad. We were in site 41, which was a pull through site. That means that you don't have to back in. Usually those type of sites cost more, but we paid the rate of a regular site. Our site wasn't in view of the lake, but it was within walking distance. There was a boat ramp, floating dock, and even a beach. The entire property is so immaculate, I just had to stop and compliment a lady tending to the beach area. She was so sweet and informed me that she takes care of the entire campground all by herself. From cleaning the bathrooms, to raking the beach, it was all her. I've been to many campgrounds this year and this was the most up kept. That lady is amazing!
