Yes you can get a ton of organic options here and the homemade English muffins are some of my favorite around but I have noticed that prices just keep escalating. I understand but some of these seems like price gouging. There are high quality ingredients here but expect to pay. Whole foods has many similar products cheaper to be fair but this is a local place so I get it. My only big issue is if I'm running out to get one or two last ingredients there are multiple times they have run out of what I need and these are simply staple ingredients. I don't think I could afford to do all of my grocery shopping here but it's a great place to pickup a few items especially their bulk items read more

All locations have the best selection of local and organic products in the Milwaukee area. Specifically the organic produce is far better and more consistent than you can get from any other grocery store in the area which is why many people make the trek to Outpost from neighboring towns just to stock up on groceries. Buying natural and organic is possible at conventional grocery stores and box chains, but I often find out of date products and a limited selection. That is not the case at Outpost. The products are handpicked and there are real relationships between Outpost and many of the vendors. There is nowhere to get a better selection of local products. So many are from Midwest or Wisconsin vendors, which means direct support for regional and Wisconsin businesses - plus Outpost itself is a Milwaukee business. Finding truly natural and organic prepared foods is not easy, but Outpost has a huge selection of deli salads, cut fruit, veg, cheese, sandwiches, soups, and cooked dinners - all made with mostly organic ingredients. I'm not sure where else in Milwaukee you can find a salad bar, a hot bar, and a juice bar with mostly organic ingredients. I will always recommend Outpost to family and friends. read more

A place where I prefer to shop. Will also shop the Capitol location, which seems to have better service. Last year/beginning of the year it was really hard to shop at this location. --I kept bumping into rude cashiers, and I couldn't help but wonder if it was because of color and race. Weird, as things seem to have taken a positive turn since, and without complaining I'm suddenly presented by a politeness, and kindness I was first hoping for when I wanted to continue shopping at this location since I moved to the area. Maybe a change of management? (I should know, but I don't, sorry). I hope it stays that way, and especially now that I'm a fully paid owner. Sushi can be so-so, the baked goods are stellar, the occasional smoothie is a nice treat if you're pressed for time and are on the go, and I like that you can opt out of paper receipts, and even if you delete the e-receipts, they'll still have your itemized transactions in their system. I really like the smallish size of Outpost locations that I shop at so far. I also appreciate the seasonal garden by the lot and cafe. Parking is easy but drivers make it slightly dangerous, and a chore, especially driving into the lot. --If I could change anything, that would be it. read more

Sends customer to look up bin # in bulk because she said it was too much work for her to look it up in the computer - this was after she was complaining about how lazy some staff members are to another coworker in front of customers. I love Outpost Natural Foods! I started coming when I did the Whole 30 in late April of 2018 and I continue to come regularly. I learned about so many different foods that it's changed the way I cook now. I love the premade fajitas in the meat section and the stuffed mushrooms. The spice section is plentiful as well as some of my favorite marinades and dressings. It's always clean and the staff is willing to help with a smile. They have plenty of fruit and veggie options, but I always check prices since it can be more expensive then a larger grocery store. They also make paninis, sandwiches, smoothies, sushi and more. I love Outpost! They have SO many wonderful selections of healthy and delicious food that is hard to find in other stores in the area. Of course, they also have a lot of locally made things as well. The store is generally more expensive than other chain groceries, but when it's in my budget, I think it's worth it for food that supports the local economy. Some of my favorites at Outpost: -Their premade food section (I especially love the Tuna Pasta salad. SO yummy!) -Their selection of dairy free cheeses -The Tofu Banh Mi at the deli. Amazing! -Lots of interesting chips and crackers that you can't find anywhere else -They sell Funky Fresh spring rolls!! -Their free magazine by the check out. Outpost is one of my local favorites. Come here for organic and healthier ingredient alternatives. The store footprint is small so you may not find all you need, but I'd recommend coming here for for a quick trip before you need to make bigger time consuming trip to a larger store. The back of the store features bulk ingredients and herbs. Definitely check it out. They have things that other stores do not. A nice selections of spelt breads and tortillas, bison meat, cornmeal cookies, etc. The fact that it's a co-op makes it a stronger reason to pick some things up here from time to time. I very much enjoy the unique selections at Outpost. The beer/wine isle isn't the biggest I've ever seen but with that said it does have some impressive choices! I'm really in need of better eating these days so I come here at outpost to shop for healthier items. It is a smaller grocery store. They have natural and organic products and vitamins and essential oils, soaps, vitamins. Frozen food a small bakery area to grab a coffee and a snack or treat also usually a little salad and hot bar but not as of right now. Upon entering you need a mask they do have some provided in door hallway if you need one and a handsanitizer dispenser. It's not often that I find myself at this Outpost (I'm closer to the Outpost on Capitol, so you'll oftentimes find me there), but all of the fabulous things about that Outpost apply to this one, as well. A great produce selection, fabulous deli/bakery with great prepared foods and sweet treats, a focus on locally purveyed products, healthy, sustainable options... I could go on and on! I love that *I* own Outpost, to boot! When I lived in Bay View (mere blocks away) this place was a janky old Kohl's. In my day, we would skip Kohls because it was gross and dream of better places to shop. Now that the hipsters have taken over, Bay View has this lovely Outpost. In comparing it with the Tosa Outpost, the Bay View version is larger and I believe has a larger deli/bakery area. They are in the midst of expanding this store and it appears that it will be 30%+ larger with a much bigger cafe area. If your New Years Resolution is to eat heathier in 2013, you can't do better than the Outpost. They have tons of bulk goods, organic stuff and even classes and store tours to help those just starting a health program. Let's face it - either you are an Outpost person or you aren't. I fall mostly into the latter category but love the concept of locally owned and supported. Still, you have to check your produce carefully and the prices can be a little out there. read more

I love Outpost, but this location lacks. A number of times I have stopped to buy their awesome hummus only to be disappointed that they are out or lack a selection. One occasion they had dill mismarked as red pepper which clearly the person packing it must have had too many pabsts or other before their shift. Amusing nonetheless. The Tosa location has never failed me and also carries super garlic which is amazing!! Their produce selection is usually very decent and even sometimes offers prices lower than a typical grocery store. Also, the quality surpasses all other stores. I can appreciate Outpost because they offer many things I need for Whole30 that other stores don't provide. So for that, it gets 4 stars. I don't actually frequent this place other than for that reason and I don't really care about eating organic. The store is nice though! Pricey, unless you're a member of the co-op, which gets you a discount. I think the membership is pretty cheap/reasonably cheap too, but since I only went to this place 3 times out of the year, I don't bother. I literally go here for sugar free Bacon and Coconut Aminos if I need it in a pinch. Sometimes I go for some Whole30 snacks. I got sushi here too once because the lady was there making it for the day. I was able to order sashimi to go while doing my shopping. So that was a nice treat. It's clean. Easy to get to. I love the selection of groceries and even the prices are decently reasonable, but there are some aspects to my experience that make each visit to the Outpost flavorful beyond the herbs and spices. First, The main feature of the listed establishment can be highlighted within 20 feet from the entrance. The deli cooler provides options ranging from hummus to red curry tofu. The hot bar and salad bar are well prepared and delicious. Second, location and parking are smooth and add value to myself and my fellow bayviewians making BayView more trendy place to live. It is also that trendiness that can put a bad taste in one's mouth. Just as pandora radio hassles you with advertisements to encourage the premium membership, I am a shopper not an owner but i do respect the Structure within which you (Outpost Corp) operate. Can a franchise establishment ultimately act in the interest of their "owners/customers/the hip"? I support the idea but challenge its current structure. If you are looking for truly local groceries and business go to Groppi's however if you are looking for the organic funding of a corporate giant go to Outpost. This is my regular, weekly grocery store - and VASTLY outweighs every other grocery opportunity in my neighborhood. Since the renovation, there has been a marked improvement in the quality and variety of beer, cheese, meat, dairy and produce. There are sometimes exceptional sales, and organic milk marked down to .99, which is a steal. I also find the staff to be very helpful and friendly! I make it a point to shop here for my own needs and whenever I am tasked with buying food for work events. The store is logically organized and very clean as well, making for an overall positive shopping experience. I have not tried the salad bar, but the sushi is also fresh, well made, and delicious when I need a quick lunch. A few changes that would elevate this to 5 star status: 1) The bulk area could be much better. I would love to see bulk honey made available, as I would rather not buy a new jar every time I run out. I would also like to see a more use friendly weighing station that would allow for using glass jars instead of so many plastic bags. I buy almost all of my dry goods in bulk, so it would be nice to see more of a commitment to wa ste reduction in this area. 2) Have fresh (unrefrigerated) clock shadow curds more often, or post your delivery dates somewhere. I can never predict when I will find them (I know they run out the door fast!) 3) Please have Westby butter and sour cream available. The current selection is almost uniformly too expensive - these items are available at other coops, and I would like to buy them at my home store as well! Besides these small issues, an excellent store, and a great caring staff. I once left my wallet behind in a grocery cart, and recovering it was no issue thanks to the attentive, responsive team. Waaaay overpriced! The whole concept of locally grown etc. is great and if you want to overpay for the warm and fuzzy feeling then go for it! I prefer to get high quality AND good prices. Outpost on Capitol Dr. is horrible. The staff are unfriendly and unhelpful. I became a member and saw ZERO savings, unless I overpaid for stuff I didn't really want. For example: "You saved .03 on your purchases today." proudly printed at the bottom of my receipt. I cancelled my membership and asked for my shares returned! Also, this location is packed with security personnel and for good reason. I was there about a month ago and some s**t went down causing complete chaos. I will never go back AND the staff with the attitudes need to be fired pronto! The location in BAY VIEW is better. Mostly helpful staff and less attitude. I only shop there for the bulk department items. Everything else is about $1.50 - $2.75 more expensive. Yes, that adds up folks! By not shopping for everything at Outpost, I was able visit a relative in Europe with the money that I saved in one year! read more

A great alternative grocery store with top notch Customer Service! Let's take a brief tour, shall we? You walk into the store and you are in the produce section. Produce is generally fresh with a fair selection. Many items list their region of origin. Personally, I would like to see more local items, though. I mean... we do farm in this state... right? And a local store that advertises "local first" could probably use a few more local items, in my opinion. Their deli-counter is OK for a small store. Not a very large selection of cheeses or meats. But some quality stuff just the same. And I've never been overly impressed with some of their salad recipes. But the fresh ingredients they use do go a long way. Dairy... I like the selection and quality here. They have a nice selection of milks including a local brand that is non-homogenized and lightly pasteurized. Yum!! Also, good selection and good prices on organic and Greek yogurts. I don't find myself in the non-perishables here much because... well... selection is lacking and pricing seems a bit high for comparable items I can get elsewhere. But, I also don't have any kind of food allergies or intolerances. And they offer a good number of alternatives for people that do. The back wall is filled with By-The-Pound items including (but not limited to) pastas, oats, brans, rices, wheats, nuts, beans, trail mixes, dried fruits, etc. In my opinion, this is one of the high points of the Outpost. In all honesty, their meat counter is really pretty small. But they don't compromise quality. They sell fresh, organic beef. It's all labeled pretty well. And you can also grab yourself some grass-fed beef from Wisconsin. Their pressed sausage is decent and they have a few fish and poultry items too. For those that don't like pork, they offer some chicken sausage alternatives. They also have a small freezer where you can find some frozen meats including buffalo. Their liquor area is rather small, but a decent selection of wine and beer nonetheless. And because it's not a warehouse of liquor, I like that I can easily find a wine without added sulfites (which they generally have 4 or 5 of). Frozen foods are... well... frozen. You can find the regular stuff here, as well as out-of-season fruits. They also have many frozen options for people with food allergies, etc. Which is really nice! So that's the tour... briefly. Pricing is a bit on the expensive side. But that's the price you have to pay for fresh food nowadays. And there are really only 1 or 2 items I can think of that are simply way out of line. Finally, their customer service is STELLAR! Everyone from the cashiers, to the butchers, to the deli counter, to the people stocking the isles. They are all just so friendly and hospitable. This is a great alternative to Whole Foods and/or Trader Joe's if you want to keep things local and at the same time enjoy products not chocked with high fructose corn syrup. Joining a co-op is one of the best things to do if you are fed up with corporate America. They hire and source locally. They treat their workers fairly, and if you join, you get a say in some of the decision making. What I would recommend is getting your fruits, veggies and nuts here then going to whole foods for your meat. New grocery stores scare me. This store is new to me, so upon entering, I felt okay in the produce section, but it stopped there. We found ourselves wandering the aisles asking in our best impressions of Jack Skellington, "What's this? What's this?" as well as, "where's this?" Luckily, the store isn't gigantic like Woodman's, and we made it out with what we needed. The staff is very friendly and helpful. When we felt lost and overwhelmed, they were quick to walk us to what we needed. I'm sure if I visit more often, and acclimate myself to their setup, It would be much better. read more

I love the Outpost, and I shop here as often as I can. However, I want to point out a part of the store which I think is AMAZING and recommend it to everyone! I threw a baby shower for my sister in the spring and didn't know where I should get a cake. My sister is a health nut and being pregnant made her even more conscious about the things she was eating. I ordered the Perfect Chocolate Cake from the Outpost because I know they use good ingredients in the food that is prepared in the store. THIS WAS THE BEST CAKE ANY OF US HAD EVER EATEN! I stop here once in a while when I'm in the area, and I got to admit it's mostly because of the Zen muffins. I don't know what they put in those little things, but they are the "Fring's Blue" of muffins- highly addictive. Everyone is right about the super high pricing here. Maybe if I won $342 million in the Powerball lottery, I'd be able to shop here. Come to think of it, $342 million would probably be about only a couple of weeks of groceries here. Since my wife is my sugar Mama, I can't afford to shop here! I do like to shop here for certain things. Outside the muffins, I enjoy the bulk area, grabbing nuts (haha!), steel cut oats, bran, granola, etc. I also have found out this is one of the few spots on the south side for veggie sausages. I enjoy the bakery here a lot. Why do I have to pay for the discount card? I don't think I can afford enough food on sale here to cover the money it would cost to get the minuscule discount! Not cool! Workers here are overall pretty nice. In places like this, I can almost feel them judging me while I wear my "blood Nike's", but not here. Good job crew. Do a little shopping here. Not only is Outpost a great shopping location for all things organic, it's also a great place to grab a bite to eat for breakfast, lunch, or dinner (kitchen closes at 7). One of my favorite things to do on shopping day is get up early and get to Oupost for a breakfast burrito. My tip: ask for the salsa in the burrito, I also like to add bacon for a special meatrific treat. The Monkey Shake with shots of espresso is also a great pick me up.They also have sandwiches, salad bar, pizza, pasta, coffee, espresso drinks, and freshly made juices. I love the fresh fruits and vegetables available at this store. They are pricey, but it is high quality, organic and local when possible. The bakery is also incredible. One of my favorite things is the rotisserie chickens in the deli, only they don't seem to have them ready on a consistent basis. I always stop on my way home from work so one would think they would have them ready at dinner time. But on more than one occasion I was told there would be a 45 minute wait. They are worth picking up if one is available. The bulk dry foods is always a good choice. I like that I can get two or three servings worth of grains instead of buying a box of something that will sit in my pantry for a year. The coffee selections are also great and I enjoy picking up some Omanhene chocolates while I'm there. The meat counter has a great selection of high quality choices of beef, chicken, and seafood. I grew up in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, we shopped at a co-op that has since been replaced by a horrific Whole Foods. I like the idea that there are still some cooperative markets like this one. I was even more pleased to find out it's a union shop with well treated employees. This is not so much a political statement as a practical one, you don't want your food handled by underpaid, low morale workers who feel exploited, their only real outlet is to take their frustrations out on stuff that you end up putting in your mouth. This cashier I was talking to couldn't have been a day over 25, but she knew all about Senator Gaylord Nelson and said it was part of her Outpost training program. Are you kidding me? Outpost teaches their workers American history? I feel like I have to shop here now. I disdain uninformed food trends and fads like gluten-free low-carb and such, but local sourcing makes good economic sense and the produce here is high quality with out the pretense and higher prices of Whole Foods. Am I allowed to review this if I'm an "owner" of the co-op? Well, since there are hundreds (thousands?) of us, I guess it's OK. Beyond my better budgeting sense, this is my go-to grocery store. I know! I'm actually not made of money, but it is so damn convenient, and they have high quality products. Almost if not all of the produce is organic, and they have a wide range of vegan and locally produced items. I'm also a fan of their cafe items (Tofu steak sandwich, potato salad, Thai tofu wrap, vegan soups). Be on the look out for weekly sales, and you'll actually find some pretty good deals! read more

I was so happy when the Outpost moved to Bay View, but since I have not lived in Milwaukee for years I never visited. Back in the day when the Outpost was a little co-op in Riverwest a girlfriend was a volunteer/owner and I used to go purchase brown rice in 50lb bags. Ah, hippy days. Then they moved to Capitol, and I heard that the co-op had been taken over by a small crew who were like Darth Vader and Company so I never went back, and since I quit MKE soon after it was not a big deal to me, but some of the Riverwest hippies remember whatever it was that was an issue back in 1991. Ok, so putting all that old co-op intrigue aside, I went here for a sandwich and a cupcake and was happy as all get go. I think the Felafil sandwich was a bit over priced, and the side of potato salad was too small to even count as a side. Felafil is cheap to make! The rest of the place is good. They have a standard - mini sized selection of organic and other humane products. If I lived in Bay View I would go here all the time, and if I were an "owner" I would ask about why the Felafil sandwich is not $3.50 as it should be. I had a coconut cupcake and this was - amazing! Loved it and at about 2 bucks it was worth it ten times over! Yum. So, I have a split vote on the cafe, and think the grocery is A-OK. read more
