This place is closed, I'm glad they closed. I bought parts here for about 15 years. THey were always a great local parts store. Sure their prices were a little higher but you paid for convenience. During the end of their run I took a vanagon there. They had it 8 days for "tests" charged me $500. One terminal on the coil was broken and the condesor was the wrong one (i bought it from them and they sold me the wrong part) I go to pick the van up and the battery is dead and it wont even start. I gave them a list of 5 things I wanted fixed, they fixed one thing and told me my van was "done" I was very sad to hear of freds passing. The business died with him. read more

I just bought (my 10th vw) a car that came from a good owner with a receipt history from Ovals. I'm finding a lot of neglect on this car that some would call the previous owners responsibility but reverting back to the receipts I have on hand it looks like they had to redo multiple jobs because they didn't get them right the first time. Many will rush to back ovals and I'm sure they do good work but you shouldn't need to use a spring compressor to remove a lower strut bolt...unless a shop put the bolt in backwards orientation. My VW mechanic relocated in 2018 so I needed to find another shop. He highly recommended Opals. I had to have the rear windows adjusted on my 1979 VW Super Beetle Convertible. Tobias did an excellent job in very little time. The windows roll up and down effortlessly. As an added bonus, they noticed my rear license plate didn't have a frame, so they put one on for free! I took 2 volkswagen transmissions to make 1 functioning one for my sandrail to Ovals as I had too many irons in the fire and was trying to save time by spending some money. A fellow sandrail owner recommended the shop. I also dropped off my complete clutch assembly because I wanted a heavy dutier clutch I gave them my Ford 2.0L flywheel that was modified so the VW pressure plate bolts up to it. It took a few weeks to get my completed transmission back so I was super anxious to get my toy back together. I spoke with a gentleman over the phone and he told me they gave me a heavy duty pressure plate, of course I was excited. When I arrived to pickup my parts there was an issue with my card not working so I decided to drive 2+ hours and come back the next day after getting cash from the bank, he asked if I wanted to see my transmission.. I said of course so I saw my fully assembled trans with a box of parts......some new some used. I asked him where my flywheel was, I said I dropped a complete clutch assembly flywheel to throw out bearing, I was told "It was probably still on my engine because that's where it goes" I took that as a blow to my mechanical aptitude. I said "No...I'm absolutely certain I left it here because I was going to have you guys put together a new clutch and resurface my flywheel" We went back and forth over the next couple of days about my missing flywheel. Anyone that knows about the Pinto powered sandrail knows that those components are getting harder to find.. I honestly don't believe Joe himself intentionally stole/kept my very custom, very rare and very expensive flywheel but there is definitely a thief at that shop. In hindsight I should've taken pictures of what I dropped off but I'm used to doingmy own work. I ended up spending an entire day driving past Portland Or and back to get a flywheel that works with my setup. Btw the heavy duty pressure plate I was sold goes for half the price on Amazon and it's listed as an OEM replacement for a VW bug/beetle, nothingheavyduty about it. Again I suppose that's on me for not looking up that part number before buying it. read more

recently purchased a '77 riviera and noticed it was missing the engine compartment seal. called around to every vw place in northern washington and every store/shop recommended oval's for the part we needed. drove down and picked it up, installed it ourselves. fortunately/unfortunately we stalled and our car wouldn't start in the lot after they closed!! so instead of paying a tow bill to somewhere else, we slept in the car. and the next morning, without an appointment they squeezed us in and fixed our problem!!! great service, helpful mechanics. will return if we ever need!! read more

We had our VW Vanagon engine rebuilt by Ovals. It runs strong! However, the transmission shaft seal began to leak badly after about 1000 miles and when we took the van to our local shop in north Seattle, they determined that a pilot bearing was never installed at Ovals. This wore out the transmission seals/bearings, and cost us $1200 to repair, mostly labor. read more

I enjoy having the ability to walk in and get the parts I need rather than waiting for an order by mail. I recently had my vanagon's rear main seal and clutch replaced. I was unhappy with the way it shifted upon delivery. I brought it back and Fred had it readjusted at no cost to ensure another happy customer. Well done Ovals.... Oval's is great. They take care of my Vanagon. They've rebuilt my motor and solved various nit-picky problems that kept the van off the road. My VW is from the olden days before quick plug-in diagnostics, so it takes more troubleshooting to find a quirky problem. They seem to able to find the trouble without too much hassle. My van is going to hit the 200,000 mile mark this year and they have been responsible for at least half that mileage. The only problem with the place is the weird building. The shop is at street level while the parts department/service counter is in the basement. It seems rather counter intuitive, but Fred, the owner says that construction issues forced them to flip-flop the arrangement. Parking seems kind of tight also. Need more parking spaces. read more

Very unhappy with this place my insurance had my car towed here because it had started to catch fire it being a VW place and I had a VW Passat I thought WOW this is perfect place...WRONG!!! They wanted to charge me about $500 to just open my hood of my car and then tell me the problem was something that was irrelevant to what was happening with the car to get more money out of me I had to call them to find anything out and then when we had our car towed to another shop they didn't know my car was gone, they said when we called to get the parts they took off my car and didn't put back on "oh we would have to charge you to put the parts on that we took off "??????? HUH??? WTF???? If that ain't crooked I don't know what is. We got our car fixed for a grand total of $300 all together parts and labor working great and wasn't what ovals said it was not even close. If I would have kept my car here it would have cost me $500 just to look at it and over $1000 to NOT fix it because what they said was the issue wasn't P.S the good review on the fixing license plate GREAT maybe there good for that at least but you get a Half of a star from me read more

well let me start by saying I had talked with Fred for a year or so before I decided to take my kit car to him, the chassis is vw and I needed the ball joints and tie rod ends replaced, I didn't have the tools at home to take on this job so I decided to take it to fred, I also wanted some electrical work done, and a small list of other things, I told him I had a 2k budget and knew that all of the list wouldn't get done but my priority was the mechanical stuff and if there was money left we could tackle the electrical, now I knew we need to do some electrical to get my hydraulic top functioning , he told me his front end guy was off for a week or so, so could we start on some electrical, I agreed, so he called me a couple days later to let me know that I was at $700 into my budget and finishing on the electrical would eat up my budget fast, I said let's stop on the electrical now, I wanted the front end fixed the most and that was going to be around $800, so he said he would get with me on Thursday and let me know exactly what my bill was at that point, I didn't hear from him till Friday evening and he told me he still hadn't got to my bill yet, I said no problem I was off Monday and would come in and look at the progress and talk about the bill. so I went there Monday morning he was not there so I looked at the progress of the car and to my dismay it looked like I just dropped it off...hardly anything done...I left after telling them to have Fred call me when he got in...that afternoon about 330pm he called me I said I wasn't very happy with the progress, he said well I wanted to let you know you bill is at $1795.00 I about died, I said is that with the front end work done, he said no that was just the electrical, I said that was ridiculous there is no way it should cost that much to get my top working and hook up my gauges..he gave me some sorry ass excuses about the time tracing wires...the wires were all there just hook them up in offers the pics and diagram I did when I unhooked them but they said no it no biggie we can get it done in no problem. .anyway I went there on Tuesday to work this out, it was just not right...after talking with Fred he agreed that the mechanical was the priority but still didn't admit that this was their fault..he offered me $350 off so I paid the bill and got my car the he'll out of there...so I'm going to take him to small claims court and recoup some more of my money, I have had professional mechanics read the work order and all agree that it's b.s. there's only $54 in parts with a $1634. bill..I'm sure that he forgot to tell his mechanic to stop on the electrical as per our conversation, the guy kept working and suddenly Fred noticed the hours and made me eat his screw up...Fred's a nice enough guy but this is soooo wrong.. read more

I had only heard negative reviews of this place thru word of mouth and boy were they right. I was asked to bring in a 1972 beetle I own for a buyers inspection from a gentleman interested in purchasing it from me, he nor I had experience with these guys. I ease dropped on there phone conversation to hear ovals tell the buyer the car needed a bunch of stuff that had already been done! Crooked, but then to my amazement they owner of ovals is on the phone to trys and sell the gentleman one of his own cars!!. Lied about my very nice fully restored beetle to peddle his garbage. Unprofessional and crooked. I confronted the owner and got the response of" to bad" . If that is these guys standard of buissness good luck having be honest turning a wrench. read more

I recently brought my New beetle to Ovals VW . The service manager Fred explained to me that a diagnostic would take one hour at the rate of $100. I dropped off my vehicle the night before , and I had driven by the establishment the next morning only to notice the car in the same spot I parked it the night before. I went in the business to get a status report only to find Fred unavailable they said that Fred was busy I left , within 20 minutes received a phone call from Fred he had mentioned he had done a diagnosed today and ran out of time but still Could not find the problem and needed more time which equaled more money I declined I later went and picked the vehicle up , still no Fred ... upon bring the vehicle home i noticed that one of the sensors was unplugged and that's all it was I would never take another vehicle to this establishment. I have filed a claim with the Better Business Bureau against Ovals. This is a follow up from my 10/28/2013 posting regarding the 'rebuilt engine' purchased and installed by Ovals. It turns out that the engine was not rebuilt with new parts, but assembled from a variety of used engines gathered at the shop. From day one the engine never performed to specification. Having paid $2,500 for a faulty 'rebuilt engine' and an additional $1,500 to have the faulty engine removed, repaired and re-installed by Ovals Motorsport; the engine performed so poorly that the van did not make it 20 miles from the shop. Towing it back, Fred the manager insists that there is nothing wrong with the engine, even though two independent mechanics confirmed that the engine was far out of specification. So I took it to a German Service & Repair shop. Their response upon inspection; "This engine is a piece of junk. Internally, the engine was never cleaned and these are not new parts. This crankshaft should have never been installed, and the heads are so bad that the engine is leaking water. Also, the distributor is worthless. This engine will be lucky to make it 300 miles." When I mentioned my experience with Fred the manager, he just shook his head and remarked, "You're not the first one to get suckered!" This shop does not stand behind their work and lacks professional integrity! Don't purchase any 'rebuilt' engines from this shop. The 'warranty' is a sham! ORIGINAL POST - 10/28/13 This is a poorly managed shop! Don't do business with Oval's Motorsport. The company uses Craigslist to sell junk rebuilt engines that have no quality standards and are so far out of specification that they are dangerous. Read other customer comments about these poor quality engines. Being a NASA engineer, I feel qualified to report on Oval's Motorsport. Read my analysis below. Traveling from Houston to Seattle, my Vanagon was getting pretty tired so, I bought a rebuilt engine from Ovals Motorsport before beginning the trip back to Texas. In summary, the quality of the rebuilt engine was nonexistent. Installed by a qualified independent VW mechanic, upon start up, the engine pistons and valves knocked so bad, we immediately shut down the engine. It was obvious that the engine was not rebuilt to specification. Calling Ovals Motorsport to inform them about the bad engine, the shop manager Fred immediately becomes defensive, shifting the blame of the bad quality engine to the installer, even before receiving or inspecting the van. Now stranded in Seattle, I tow the vehicle to the shop to extract the broken engine. Admitting that the engine was never run or tested at the shop to ensure that it was within specification, the manager continues his best to shift the blame away from the poor quality of the engine and unto me for letting someone else besides his shop install the engine. Stranded for three weeks, I must fly back to Houston. Having paid $2,500 for a faulty rebuilt engine, I'm now extorted to pay an additional $1,500 to have the engine removed, repaired and re-installed by Ovals Motorsport. Upon completion and delivery, the engine performed so poorly that the van did not make it 20 miles from the shop. Towing it back, the manager insists that there is nothing wrong with the engine, even though two independent mechanics confirmed that the engine was far out of specification. Fred's response, "Come and get your van, I'm tired of working on it. If you don't come and get it I'll have it towed out of here and impounded." Be aware that I am back in Houston, Texas and in need of assistance. The 12 months, 12,000 mile 'warranty' that prompted me to purchase the engine from Oval is a lie. There is no possible way that this engine can be driven back to Houston, Texas safely. It won't even make it out of Seattle! In summary, the shop manager put more value on money than on the quality of his product. The customer service was terrible! Knowingly putting a customer at risk is unethical. The lack of integrity, personal warranty and customer service that Ovals Motorsport displayed, to an out of state customer deserves to be told. In Texas, helping folks that are in need of assistance is part of our tradition. Imagine my confidence in this engine getting me back to Houston safely - None! Stay away from Ovals Motorsport. They don't ensure the quality of their product and the customer service is terrible! I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau about this shop. read more

We brought our Jetta here after getting tired of the dealership sabotaging our car. Magically every time we went to the dealership they would "find" something else wrong with the car. We brought our car here and were give excellent service. They addressed the issue, gave us a fair price and didn't try to scare us into paying for unneeded services. I was in at Ovals this week waiting for a diagnostic on my 2000 Bug. A guy came in thinking he needed to purchase a carburetor. Parts clerk got it and the customer had a question regarding an output. Fred spoke with the customer asking him several questions and come to find out Fred was able to make a suggestion that might save the guy the cost of the carburetor. I was impressed that Fred took the 15 or so minutes to talk with the guy and made a recommendation that cost his shop the sale of a $200+ part. I HIGHLY doubt that a dealership would do that. I am once again impressed with the customer service from this shop. read more

The guy at the counter was a real asshole, I asked a question about my mk2 golf and his answer were really smart and aggressive, I suggest just ordering the parts you need online so you don't get ripped off by the guys at oval's. Helpful, friendly staff. I been going there for more then a decade. Always have the parts I need for the classic VW's and if they dont they will get them later that day. The mechanics are on point. It doesn't matter if it is the '68 sqaureback getting a tune up or the '02 TDi getting a new injector pump my car is always coming out of there in tip-top shape. I would stay away from this place if you want quality work done. Just talking with the owner Fred doesn't instill a lot of confidence in their operation. I got a bad feeling after picking my vehicle up the last time I had it in for repair work. Come to find out the issue that prompted me to bring the car in to begin with was still present, and I was charged for parts that weren't replaced. I've also heard from several people (online) who have purchased rebuilt air cooled engines from Oval's that have all had a major engine failure. They seem to cut a lot of corners during the rebuild process. I'm not sure if this is how they normally do business but I won't be bringing my vehicles there any more. Having had work done by the folks at Ovals for a number of years I can honestly say their work has been top notch. Everything works right the first time and everyone there is pleasant to work with and talk too. I've been steered away from making expensive makeovers when they are not needed and looking back it has always been the right choice. I feel fortunate that me and "Bessie" the bug made it home after her engine rebuild. It seems that the oil drain plug was barely tightened, a lot of money could have gone up in smoke if it had fallen out. And I do mean a LOT of money, which admittedly I had agreed to for Oval's "Pro-rebuild". The rebuild has reduced the amount of oil I was burning/leaking, but no noticeable performance improvement yet. Fred has assured me that the components need milage to wear in together before I will see how well the rebuild did. Unfortunately, so far I have found missing screws, cross threaded screws, the heater boxes not hooked up correctly, and exhaust tips not even lengths (looks tacky for a classic car that is show quality, not a performance issue). I even paid extra to have the engine tin repainted. Well, it was repainted in what could best be described as flat-black-orange peel, not the original gloss black. If you have ever tried to wipe oil off of flat paint you will understand my frustration with having thrown away that money. I want to trust Fred, he knows his VWs, but just too many things that look like the mechanics had said, "good enough". Well, not good enough for my standards. read more
