This was such a sweet discovery in the Journal Plaza on a recent visit to Lake Placid. There are two businesses here, the coffee and tea shop, Owl and Otter Espresso Co., and a gift store with a vintage vibe, the Local Yocal. Both are owned by Luke Haney and his mother Renee. The Local Yocal offers a variety of products, including local and Florida-made items, Lake Placid souvenirs, local honey, toys, seasonings, caned fruit and vegetables, jams, dressings, magnets, mugs, bags, stickers, and T-shirts. It was fun to explore all of the unique items on the wooden shelves. Children will love filling a box for $5 with all kinds of old fashioned candy. There were smarties, tootsie rolls, lollipops, and taffy. They also had gag gifts like Florida Flamingo Poop which is milk chocolate covered raisins. They even had old fashion stick candy for only 75 cents each. I loved how they had something for every price range. You may stop in with the intention of looking for a gift but you will be hard pressed not to leave with something for yourself. Connected by an open door to the Local Yocal is the charming Owl and Otter Espresso Co. coffee shop. The inside is elegantly decorated with crystal chandeliers, plush jewel tone chairs, marble walls, and tin ceilings. A glass case displays freshly baked bread and sweets. They offer specialty teas and coffees including gluten-free and organic. They also prepare charcuterie boards for their friends business next door, the Wine Down Bar & Shop. I ordered one of their most requested beverages, an iced Chai Tea which was the perfect refreshment on a sweltering day. Both the Local Yocal and Owl and Otter Espresso Co. coffee shop are such a great addition to downtown Lake Placid and Journal Plaza. Such a cute spot in Lake Placid! This coffee shop is connected to a charming little store and a wine bar, making it a cozy and unique place to visit. My friend and I ordered matchas, and they were both pretty good. We also tried the blueberry cheesecake, and it was delicious! I wanted something like a frappe but got a tumeric, ginger chai tea on the rocks. It was a little watery probably because I got it with too much ice and should have specified a little ice but it was quite refreshing and something my throat needed at the time. They had some Christmas flavors that I should have tried but having an itchy throat thought this tumeric one would work better. They seemed to also have quite a crowd from the Saturday farmers market. read more

My husband and I purchased 2 very old and stale lemon filled donuts at the Lake Placid, Fl location about 30 mins ago, they were so old that the yellow lemon filling had turned a dark yellow, very sticky and gooey, not the usual fresh bright light lemon filling. Both donuts were so stale that the outer ends were tough and stiff. This was our 3rd visit and our last. We moved here from Pensacola and "NEVER" bought any stale donuts from any of their stores I would go to. All three times we waisted our money, and had to throw away donuts. This has no reflection on thier employees as they are wonderful, it's the week old donuts you pick up from other locations to sell to rural towns like Lake Placid,Fl obviously! read more

This is not a coffee shop, but a caffeinated life experience. First, the coffee is terrific. Second, the tables and chairs are comfortable. The decor is upscale and soothing and the very light classical or instrumental music adds to the ambiance of the shop.Oh, the staff are awesome too! Stopped by this relatively new business to grab a cold brew medium coffee on a toasty Lake Placid afternoon. Was a little surprised to learn that a medium was over five dollars. However, I thought if it's better than Dunkin' Donuts it's worth the extra money. When I got home and looked at my receipt, I was shocked to see that I was billed an extra $1 dollar for the half-and-half creamer that I requested in the coffee. Not sure if other people take a look at the receipt but you might want to check and see how being charged for all of these extras can add up overtime. Definitely will not go back again, and will give my cold brew business to Dunkin' Donuts - where they do not charge you for cream, no matter how many you ask for! read more

Our son recently got married in Lake Placid. Owl and Otter provided our welcome party with with various flat breads and a large charcuterie tray. It was a wonderful addition to our event. Unbelievably expensive, it was already overpriced, now they hiked up the prices even more, almost $10 for a medium iced mocha, never ever paid anywhere close to that at any other coffee shop. They charge you for everything, the coffee, the syrups, the milk, the cup, the straw, The whip cream, I mean everything is a charge. Even if you order a drink that is built like the mocha latte, they charge you the mocha latte then start charging for the mocha and the milk. I thought that was so odd as the drink was already built, they built the drink to order so why he was charging again without me asking for extras was so weird. People need to watch out for this coffee shop, they will take advantage of you. I walked out, I'm not paying $10 for a cup of coffee. Once a church paid ahead of time for an event the church held in that plaza and this coffee shop took advantage of the church people and was charging them for what was supposed to be free coffee. And some of the workers have attitudes too, like who are these people? This is a small town with people who work hard and most do not have $9/$10 on the daily for a cup of joe in the afternoon.m. They will not get my money! Bad, unethical business. Not sure how they will be able to last, especially when all of the snowbirds leave town.
