Morty and Edna's is located in the Journal Plaza in downtown Lake Placid in the spot formerly occupied by the Good News Cafe. When Morty and Edna's owners, Joey and Eli found out the spot was for sale during a visit with family, they knew it was meant for their own restaurant inspired by this small historic town and their grandmother's cooking. Morty and Edna's offers American comfort food in an welcoming setting. You order at the counter and they take your phone number and text you when your food is ready. You can sit inside at one of their spacious dining tables or in the Journal Plaza at one of their outside tables. After a long day at the Caladium Festival I was starving for some comfort food before starting on the long drive back to South Florida. Morty and Edna's was the perfect choice. All of their menu items are made with seasonal, fresh ingredients. Joey handles the savories and Eli the sweets. After being in the heat all day I knew I wanted a cold sandwich so I ordered the Chicken What? a chicken salad sandwich on dark rye. I also ordered the lemonade of the day, strawberry. The sandwich was so delicious and the portion was large. I ended up taking half with me for the road. The cookies looked amazing. Next time. They also serve coffee, beer, and wine. Went for lunch today, and got the daily sandwich which was a bbq sandwich, and it was delicious! You order at the counter and then they text you to let you know it's almost ready and then they call your name out. Strawberry lemonade was perfect! They also have a little shop attached called The Blueberry Patch and we shopped around in there and found a few things we liked before grabbing lunch. The restaurant side is small but roomie, staff was helpful on both sides. Lovely place! read more

Amazing brunch spot- and my favorite restaurant in Lake Placid!! Their bacon, egg, and cheese on a plain bagel (or sour dough) is to die for (if you're lucky enough to get it on a glazed donut, as a special, GET IT)!!! What makes the sandwich so amazing is their thick candied bacon (also available as a side). Best candied bacon I've ever had. There are always a bunch of specials for the week (rotating menu) and they offer a wide selection of flavored coffees (hot and cold). The staff and the owners are really nice, and I loved hearing their story about the opening (and no, their names are NOT Morty & Edna). The inside of the restaurant is decorated beautifully, and there's a decent amount of seating inside and outside (it DOES get packed though and will fill up quick). I love this gem in Lake Placid. The staff is always friendly and even when busy, the service is fast and you can still find a spot. I enjoy the outdoor patio to watch the butterflies and people. The food is always consistent and I enjoy the availability of healthy options. The avocado toast and frittata with potatoes are my favorites. The avocado toast is always crisp and not soggy, the dill adds a nice freshness to the dish. The coffee drinks are solid, my cold brew on my most recent visit was perfect! My husband was adamant about me coming to this little town with him & I'm so glad I came. It's not very big but extremely adorable. I saw the sign for Morty & Edna's craft kitchen & had to try it. We go for their Sloppy BLT with egg. The flavors are delicious and go well together. We get the yolk runny so we can sop it up with the delicious bread! Their prices have gone up, which is unfortunate, but this sandwich is still worth it and it's a big sandwich. read more

I had the bacon egg and cheese sandwich and the flavors were on point, including a sweet and spicy bacon addition. My brother had the Lox bagel and it was awesome in presentation and taste. FANTASTIC!! My colleagues/friends and I met on Tuesday in the middle between St. Pete and Boynton Beach. There were a few places in what appears to be the cute 1-2 blocks of "downtown" Lake Placid and we are so glad we chose this one! The place itself is quaint inside and connected to a gift shop, which we never got to. They have a bunch of tables outside, where we sat on a beautiful day. The food -- again, FANTASTIC!! They each had salads that were very fresh and tasty -- from what they said. Me -- I had the chicken salad sandwich on pumpernickel bread and added their bacon, which is to-die-for!! The combination of it all was mouth-watering and something I wish was just 2 minutes away rather than 2 hours! Since they have no hood nothing is actually cooked to order ... there is no grill or fry ladders just heating ovens and toasters... so your order is pieced together... it's a little pricey and most of the time good but the menu gets more limited around 1:30 cuz there breaking down to be closed by 2... and they mean 2 ... they want your butt outta there... This was a random stop while driving to St Pete, and I am so happy to have tried their food. I had the special sandwich of the day, the Edna - roast pork, mushrooms, cheese, truffle and arugula on a fresh roll. It was damn good! Crispy bread, super tasty combination of ingredients. Husband liked his Greek salad, and you fancy huh was delicious too. It was $55 for 3 entrees and 3 drinks (lemonade, water, sprite) a little pricey but very tasty. I'm hoping we can stop by on our way back! Ambiance was cute, magnetic letters and chalk to write messages. Holy God this place is amazing! My friends and I came here and were immediately enthralled with the sandwiches being made so naturally we needed some. My 2 friends ordered the BLT with avocado and we each had lavendar lemonade. I of course stole half a sandwich so I wasn't left out of this magic. If you get the opportunity GO! This sandwich was incredible. I'm not really a fan of BLTs but this was so good- so much flavor and ridiculously thick slices of bacon. Don't even get me started on the lemonade. What a fantastic sandwich! I had the best BLT of my life today and I don't say that lightly. I'm sixty something years old, traveled and eaten out thousands of times and this sandwich was that good! Here is the menu entry for your perusal- ---- THE NOTORIOUS B.L.T. Avocado, candied bacon, lettuce, Tomato & herb mayo $10 + chicken $3 --- Note, I did add the chicken, so this was a $13 sandwich. Not something I'd do every day for lunch but so worth it! Take a look at my picture.  The sourdough was grilled to absolute perfection. The added chicken was super moist, and the veggies were fresh. The candied bacon was to die for. The balance of all the ingredients was spot on. It was quite simply heaven on a plate. I see now why everyone is talking about it. Pro Tip- The menu here is extremely limited compared to most restaurants. Check it out online to be sure it meets your needs. Atmosphere- It's in a tiny plaza but I had no trouble street parking. The joint itself has both inside and outside tables. The décor is eclectic. The business model is fast-casual. Order and pay at the register and they will bring your food to the table. Adult Libations- There is no liquor license here but there is a genuinely nice brewery next door. You could bring your sandwich there and quaff a few while devouring this masterpiece of a sandwich. Customer Service- Was limited due to the fast-casual model but the three folks that touched me were very nice including Morty. Over the last few years, I've watched the restaurant selection in teeny tiny Lake Placid dramatically improve. This place is one example and if you are anyway near, make the stop. You won't regret it. I am very stingy with my 5th star and rarely award it, but these fine folks deserve it! read more

I was doing okay during part 1 of the pandemic. There wasn't much to do or see in Lake Placid, FL. Businesses shut down. Many never reopened including a few pretty good ones. But seriously, what a time to start a new business in a small rural town. Barely open a few months when holy hell struck the world, Morty & Edna's brought a new cuisine to this town. I grew up with foodies because of my heritage. i went on to spend 20 years in DC restaurants as a chef/manage, and the rest of my years devoted to the pursuit of food. Fine food. Fine food in American cities. Fine food around the world. So yeah. Wife and I got used to eating freshly prepared meals and avoiding nasty processed foods. As I've said, we had a few pretty good restaurants but no truly great ones. Then there was Morty & Edna's. I don't even know what to say next. The menus are tiny. There's breakfast and lunch six days a week. Twice they are open in the evenings. Once in a while, there is a special prix fixe menu with wine pairings that are insane! All of the menu items are delicious but the dailies will blow you away. I could write about them all, but the house menu is a great start for a newbie. The breathtastic BLT oozing with a smear of avocado and SUGAR BACON! There's the Burrata which rarely escapes my slightly stocky girth. No. Sorry awesome favorites. This review belongs to the most amazing sandwich that I have ever eaten anywhere in the world, created by our own Chef Joey. The French Onion Chicken. Yes. That one. Thick crispy brown toast. The most juicy and tender Paillarde de poulet (hearty chicken breast slices), caramelized onions, swiss cheese squeezing out the side, and fresh lettuce and tomato to finish. OMG. Don't try to talk to me while I'm eating this. You might get a wave. (Or something else involving my hand). Some days I can eat the whole thing. Other days it comes home with me. Screw the box. Just give me a paper bag. It ain't gonna be in there long enough to matter.
