Yay to wine and safe outdoor (ish) dining!!
    Shannon W.

OMG what a cute spot! We sat in their outdoor covered space and enjoyed amazing food, great wine and a super friendly, hospitable server, I was very very pleased! We started off with their mole spiced nuts, which were THE best nuts I have ever had. They should package them and sell them in retail stores! Seriously though, they were nice and warm and delightfully seasoned - I was quite the fan! We also did their marinated olives which had a unique orange zest and rosemary flavor to them. Yum. For dinner we split the beet salad, and two pizzas: the bee sting and the Shelby. Both were excellent. I loved the combination of sweet and salty on the bee sting & the fresh veggies on the Shelby pizza. I asked for a little side of olive oil and that was incredibly delightful too (do you guys make this in house?) And who can go to a wine bar and not order wine (and how does someone not drink in the this horrid year 2020...) The wine was great. We ordered Pinot Noir, but the waiter recommended another similar red, which was very good. We also did a glass of Chenin Blanc. CT is so beautiful in the fall and this was the perfect stop in the most adorable town!

I don't understand a lot of the negative reviews here. On a rainy stormy night we drove about 1/2…read morehour from Kent to visit this place that I had heard so much about, and the food did not disappoint. They have mint juleps at the bar, very nice! We split a caesar salad for an app, plenty for both of us, and perfectly dressed and crisp (despite some other reviewer whining about it being "bland"). For entrees, I'm not normally a meat loaf lover, but was intrigued by the inclusion of black truffle oil and marsala sauce and so ordered it. It was rather outrageously good, the accompanying summer veggies very flavorful. Partner had the seafood pot pie, very yummy except for the inclusion of fennel, which I personally do not care for. He loved it although the broth/gravy was a little thin for his taste. He plans to thicken it up a bit when he tackles the leftovers. My Cotes du Rhone wine with meal was delicious, but came in a smallish glass; could have benefited from a larger pour and a larger glass to expand the aroma. For dessert, which we don't always order, we had some sort of perfectly decadent chocolate lava type cake with just the right amount of ice cream. Way better than any lava cake I ever had! The accompanying coffee, even my decaf, was stellar. We sat in the room opposite the bar, at the windows next to the tumbling brook outside. Very nice atmosphere. The only mistep I would say was that when we called at 7.30 to make reso's, the gal on the phone stressed that the "kitchen closes at 8:00" and that we would have to order right away. We said okay no problem but were a tad worried about being rushed. She hung up before I could give my name and number in party. When we arrived, about 10 minutes to 8, the hostess who had answered the phone seemed confused and asked us if we were the ones who had called to see "if they were open". I said, well, we called for reservations, but you hung up before I could give my name. Despite this initial unwelcome-vibe weirdness, our waitress, Fiona, made us feel perfectly welcome and not rushed. Although she too did come to tell us, about 15 minutes in, that "the kitchen was closing" but we had already ordered and desserts weren't an issue. Something must have happened with a customer to make them gun-shy about this. In a nutshell, don't show up inside of an hour of the posted closing time if you want to be sure about getting served. And BTW the closing times on Google are incorrect; they are only open until 10 on Fridays and Saturdays, not every day. Although it's a long drive from where we actually live, we definitely plan to come back in winter to sit next to the cozy fireplace and sample the famous chicken pot pie and shepherd's pie croquettes. My partner absolutely loved this place, and he's quite picky.

The buns were hard and stale. my partner ordered medium-rare, but it came out bone dry, almost white throughout. Crumbly meat. The server never asked if the nearly untouched plate was okay, just dropped the check. It was overpriced and utterly disappointing. To top it all off, I was confined to the bathroom shortly thereafter. Don't have solid proof this place was the culprit.... But I don't have solid anything else either Update: my partner has food poisoning too. Do not come here. The lovely location is not a good enough excuse to ruin your night.

But with the Progeny at camp and the pup walked to somnolence, the Pardner and I finally had a chance to check this place out. Pros: - There's often live music -- without a cover! We saw the talented Eran Troy Danner perform. - The house-brewed beers are varied and delicious. We tried the Amarillo Sky Double IPA, Sacred Grounds Coffee Porter, and the Pirates and Parrots Island Lager, made in three very distinct styles. The Amarillo Sky reminded me of Lawson's Sip o' Sunshine, though a bit less hoppy. Pirates and Parrots would be a perfect session beer. It's fantastically refreshing in the heat. I have to wonder whether the Sacred Grounds Coffee Porter has anything to do with the excellent Sacred Grounds Coffee in Sherman, CT -- but either way, it's very tasty. - The bathrooms are clean!!! They're probably the cleanest bathrooms I've ever seen in a drinking establishment of any kind in the US. - The staff are really nice and friendly, affirmatively helpful. - There's a nice looking food menu. It was a little early for dinner, for us, but we'd love to head back... someday when we are again sans Progeny. - There is an air conditioned indoor space one can retreat to if it's really, really hot out. But the expansive outdoor area out back is where most of the action seems to be when weather permits. Cons: - No dogs allowed - No humans allowed under 21 I am tempted to ding a star because those are big fat cons for us. But... given those delicious beers, the clean bathrooms, the great live music... I can't. This place is sweet.

Housatonic River Brewing is a craft brewery that opened in New Milford, Connecticut in September…read more2018. It was founded by brewer Dave Littlefield. With brewery experience dating back to the 1980s, Littlefield had owned and operated Harbor Lights Brewing Company in Dana Point, California during the 1990s. A couple of non-brewery jobs later, Littlefield had relocated to Connecticut and looked to open a new brewery. He purchased a 7-acre property along the banks of the Housatonic River in New Milford. In addition to brewing good beer, Littlefield's goal was to create a venue that the community would appreciate and enjoy. The brewery features a large rustic taproom, a stage for live musical acts to perform, and a large seasonal beer garden under a pavilion. In addition to the housemade beer, HRB also serves wine, cider, craft cocktails, and a large menu of delicious food from their in-house kitchen. In May 2024, Littlefield purchased the former Quirk Works Brewing & Blendery space in Danbury for HRB to use as a secondary production facility. I recently visited Housatonic River Brewing for the first time. I had heard that they host a lot of live music acts and I purchased a ticket to see NYC-based Rush tribute band "Moving Pictures". I'm a HUGE Rush fan, so I was really excited to see the group perform. I arrived over an hour before the show started and grabbed a table close to the stage. There was a modest crowd when I first arrived, but the whole taproom was packed by the time the show started. After looking over the menu, I started off with a plate of "Smoked Macaroni & Cheese" (smoked bacon jalapeño macaroni & cheese) and "Cornbread" (w/ cinnamon honey butter). Afterwards, I moved onto a "Gourmet Brisket Grilled Cheese" (three cheeses between perfectly grilled rustic sourdough toast w/ bacon & jalapeños & fries). Everything was fantastic, especially that heavenly grilled cheese! Throughout my visit, I enjoyed pours of "Uncle Bock" (Doppelbock), "Less Gentle On My Mind" (Double New England IPA), and "Remedy" (Imperial Stout). They were all good, especially the latter two. Moving Pictures also gave an excellent performance to the very energetic crowd. Overall, I had quite an enjoyable evening and I hope to return to HRB!

In no particular order, the service is incredibly slow from the time you order until you get your food and then the check. The food is nothing more than bar fare, and not that good -- always greasy, regardless what you order. They could make burnt toast greasy! Nothing I've ever ordered stands out as worth mentioning. I will point out that their Black n' Tans are always warm. Supposed to be cool or chilled -- yet to actually 'enjoy' one! My biggest complaint is that there are A LOT of drunks, derelicts and seedy people in there no matter when you go! They're loud, intoxicated, incessantly swearing (as does most of the bar staff), and just rude to listen to and be around. That IS what this place is! A seedy dump of a bar that has a menu and serves food. Trust me, unless that's your kind of place, you CAN do better!
