I tried Brunette with a couple of my girlfriends and it was a cute spot to pre-dinner. We went in on a cold night with snow still on the ground, and it had a really cool vibe, warm and dimly lit, our favorite. Our servers knew their stuff, gave some great wine recommendations. I usually don't white wine outside of summer, but I ended up getting two glasses of a fruity floral one. I was torn between the sparkling pink or the sparkling white, and I usually go for the pink. But they highly recommended the white, and it was *incredible*. A french sparkling white but not champagne, it was the Domaine de Facteur 'La Bulle de Facteur' 2023, the notes said "green apple, florals and honey, a hint of lychee, and plenty of minerality". My mouth waters just thinking of it. We also tried a little charcuterie meat and cheese board of sorts, but honestly, they weren't amazing. Pricey for what you get and nothing really notable. Amazing low intervention wine selection. We had an orange wine that absolutely knocked my socks off as well as a bottle of German Pinot Noir that was to die for. The fact that they had German Pinot at all tells me they really care about sourcing cool stuff! Had great chats with the owner who is clearly passionate about what she does. This is a really cute little wine bar on an adorably quaint street in Kingston. We found out about this place through a recommendation from a friend. For lunch, they serve light sandwiches, and bite style food to accompany the wine. My husband got the salmon tartine, while I had the goat cheese sandwich. We shared the marinated olives. The food was served shortly after ordering. I ended up swapping the goat cheese sandwich as it was served on hero-style bread, which I don't like. The salmon tartine was served with creme fraiche, cucumber, and salmon roe. It was refreshing and tasty, but also something I could have easily made on my own. I think this is a cute spot to visit for the ambience and wine, but wouldn't recommend the food here. read more

I've been three times now and thoroughly enjoyed everything. While the menu is very limited, if you come with a tapas mindset, you can be satisfied. The atmosphere is super. Maybe don't go on a first date because it's so small you can't really get lost, it almost feels like you're on a film set. I love all the little details like the scalloped doilies, the pens with the logo, the water glasses. Servers are professional and friendly. I don't drink (yet I go to wine bars?) so we ordered affogatos which absolutely did the trick. The squash made my head swim it was so good and the butter noodle caccio e pepe was perfect. It was also very small and $18. But still, so tasty that I really didn't even want more. I think this is where to go if you want small and tasty. Also the bathroom decor is inspiring. read more

Brunette, you're a stunner! I first learned of this place through the website AndNorth. The space looked beautiful and their menu sounded fantastic. So when my partner and I purchased our new car and went for a celebratory drive, I suggested we go to Kingston and check out this lovely little wine bar. Well, we were not disappointed at all! The wine options are terrific, certainly a very interesting selection of biodynamic wines. Owners Tracy and Jaime have put together a menu of bar snacks that play well with the wine. On our visit I sipped on a slightly effervescent orange wine while we snacked on burrata and shaved fennel, kettle chips dressed up with trout roe on a bed of crème fraiche, smoked salmon sliders and Castelvetrano olives. The food was terrific while not overshadowing the wine. It was sublime the way great wine bars are and for days and weeks afterwards I was dreaming of the next time we can come back again. Unfortunate that we didn't like this place. First waitress seemed super nice but upon sitting we got very yuppy vibes, like we weren't welcome. Staff forgot about us and were short with us when we finally got served. Food is overpriced (and we are from Manhattan) and is insanely small portions. Very poor wine selection too. We couldn't get out of there fast enough, especially because at this point our waitress forgot us again and didn't bring check. Spend your money elsewhere. read more

I parked and started to walk up the hill towards all the stores and peering through the window I saw people enjoying wine. Plus there was a sign that said wine bar. I go inside and was treated warmly by one of the servers(?). He told me I can pick a spot to sit so I choose a table all to my self. The staff member helped me quickly and told me of their special noodles with an egg!! I quickly said yes, cause noodles and eggs are always delicious!! He also said that the lighter wine will go with it. So ordered one. I got the wine, and it was phenomenal after about 8-10 minute wait I got my noodles!! My friend and I learned about Brunette from an article about orange and natural wines and took a trip up on a Saturday evening. The decor is beautiful!! All done by the owner, who was incredibly nice. The other bartender was also knowledgeable and friendly. The wine selection is great and I enjoyed each wine I had. Walked by this new wine bar on the Rondout and had to go in. The decor is bright, chic and so very French - instantly transported back. Excellent selection of well curated top-quality wines and the prices reflect that. Many are natural or organic and was excited to see a Beaume de Venise on offer, which I'll enjoy on my next visit. They have beer and cider too! I enjoyed a $12 Gamay. Hubs had a $5 cider. It came with a side of two tiny morsels of Smoked Gouda. Had to knock a star off for the gougère we ordered. The flavor was good but the consistency was way off - they didn't rise, weren't that puffy airy consistency - more like a flat, dense thin biscuit. Not really a place to go when hungry but for small noshes like nuts, olives, finger foods and to have a good glass of wine before your meal, so don't go if you're famished expecting a full menu. I originally found this place through Instagram and it truly lives up to the hype. Upon walking in you see the beautiful bar and the delicately decorated tables along the wall. This is a perfect place for a date, a girls night out, yet causal enough to bring family in who are visiting from out of town. My partner and I were approaching our one year anniversary and she took it upon herself to find us an affordable, closer-by Airbnb. What started with a quiet weekend away led to our researching the surrounding area of Kingston, and quickly finding a wealth of well thought-out and unique bars and restaurants. Brunette was one of the first spots that stood out to us; their social media was well curated and precise, and sparked a great amount of interest for the two of us. We arrived Friday afternoon and strolled through downtown Kingston. Brunette was closed at this time, but we peeked through the windows and got an idea for the space. Tidy and quaint, Brunette features a bar as well as several small tables that could seat three comfortably. The decor was very minimalist, primarily white with some pastel pink accents throughout, as well as regal wallpaper adjacent from the entrance. After we settled in to our Airbnb, got ourselves ready for the night and headed back out, Brunette was our first destination, and it was by far the best stop of the night. We sat at the bar while the owners, a husband and wife duo who are actually natives of our humble city of Rochester, chatted and served the dozen or so patrons. We were handed menus that were as thoughtfully written and designed as the rest of the space. I elected to have the featured wine, a crisp orange-based wine the name of which I can't recall, and my partner ordered a flight of sparkling wine. Admittedly, I'm not much of a wine connoisseur, generally opting for a "dry red" and not knowing much more besides that. The gentleman serving us made the process informative and fun, describing where the wine was from as well as giving some information about the flavors we should be finding as we drank. My glass was fantastic, and from what I sampled of partner's flight, hers were great as well. As stated before, I'm not well versed when it comes to describing wines, but I can say confidently that the flavors of each of our selections were very diverse and interesting. In short, my relatively narrow conception of wine tasting was expanded quite a bit that night. To accompany our drinks, we chose the bar nuts, some well-seasoned roasted almonds, as well a small jam sandwich. The almonds were seasoned with rosemary, cayenne, and brown sugar, resulting in a balanced flavor that complimented most of our wine quite nicely. The "petite sandwich" was composed of a crispy French roll, with goat cheese, cherry jam, and rosemary butter, and it was FANTASTIC. I've never much understood goat cheese before, it always struck me as too earthy and pungent, much to my partner's chagrin. The flavor clicked for me with the accompanying butter and jam, and I had to stop myself from eating most of the small sandwich before my partner had a chance to take a second bite. On Sunday, before our trip back home, we stopped by to check out the egg sandwiches that were featured on the menu. These were the only weak point in my opinion. As a brief aside, on the merit of price alone Brunette would not be a bar I regularly frequent. The offerings are higher-end and the price reflects that. In most of the other instances, the price was justified. I paid for an experience that expanded my palate, for great service, and for a comfortable atmosphere. However, the egg sandwiches, while still tasty, were $8 and took all of three bites to finish. That being said, on the whole I respect what the owners are doing. Brunette is a space created patiently and deliberately. The decor, menu, and even small touches like the doily coasters demonstrate a love for the business that they're in. I met with four friends for a book club meeting. We enjoyed the time there but could barely afford it. The most affordable bottle of wine was $50. We weren't expecting that. I understand it's difficult starting a business and having it survive, especially in Kingston. I've seen many come and go after people had sunk their life savings and dreams into them. Unfortunately the stressors of running Brunette may be getting to be a little too much for the female owner. Perhaps another staff member is needed on weekend nights in summer but it's not affordable right now? I'm not sure how else to take my experience at Brunette which was exceedingly negative without trying to empathize with some of the struggles they may be facing. Unfortunately my experience there reflected a stressed, moody and at times outright abusive owner who was unsettled that I was sitting at the bar alone to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine and some snacks. The cold reception began immediately, and the evening worsened as I watched her berate, angrily order about and cause embarrassment in her male partner and the schoolgirl who works for her making the food. Both felt the need to make excuses for the female owners behavior. Whatever this woman's issue was, I left feeling that I had somehow done something wrong, just by entering and handing over my hard earned given the rude looks and at one point scoffing at something I was saying to the younger woman. It was clear everyone around her except those blissfully unaware in groups and couples copped the brunt of her vile mood, and judging by the excuses, it clearly wasn't a one time scenario. Hospitality might be taking its toll, a fight before work? I don't know. But this level of unprofessional behavior has no place in small businesses that hope to succeed. And btw, this far out does the sometimes cranky and standoffish French or cliquey Brooklyn bars. This was just unacceptable. read more

Brunette is an elegant and yet uncontrived space, very much like the historic Kingston Rondout neighborhood it calls home. The romantic, vintage inspired interior is perfectly juxtaposed with the Tom Waits quote on the menu. Brunette is a perfect place to relax at a beautiful, crisp, marble table in the summer and cool off with a chilled glass of something delicious that you wouldn't perhaps try if you were elsewhere. In colder months, it's like an oasis from the monotony, warm and inviting with a rich red and some delicious, spicy, local pate on toast. Jamie and Tracey (the owners) are both great bartenders and conversationalists. As such, Brunette is somewhere you could be as comfortable taking a client as a date.
