    It's my first time trying Burmese cuisine and during Summerlicious for dinner, so I don't have any fair comparison for this type of cuisine. Though I was with someone who truly lived in Burma growing up and she said some dishes, like the soupy curries and tea leaf salad were Burmese cuisine while others, like the bao didn't feel authentic to Burmese cuisine when she had it growing up. We ordered the tea-leaf salad and that was outside the Summerlicious menu but I think that was my favourite part of the meal, truly unique. You can taste the tea leaves mixed in the salad. Though I heard it's actually an even more intense tea-leaf flavour in Burma, this is milder. I also heard they remove a classic Burmese dish (forgot the name) from their menu because the flavour profile is not as popular with the locals. We each ordered one of the curries for our main, fish, chicken and lamb. I say the chicken and lamb curry was better than the fish. The fish tasted a bit more like a tomato soup based, while the chicken is more of a rich coconut flavour profile and the lamb had more spices and a bit of a kick. They were generous with the baos for the app, two large baos. However, it felt like the bun to topping ratio was a bit off. Not much toppings in the bao. Satay was a good start with a generous portion of chicken. Dessert was ok, nothing out of the ordinary, cheesecake like many others on the Summerlicious list though they had flavours of Chai and pistachio. I think it's more of a mousse cake instead of cheesecake. It's interesting that they have Macao egg tart as one of the options even though their restaurant name is Popa Burmese Kitchen on their signage and Google Maps. The egg tart is good, though I guess I was expecting more Burmese cuisine. Though I read an article later that their menu includes influences from Burma, Bali and Macao.

    Located in at Bayview Village (near the Loblaws), the menu focuses on Burmese flavours. Different styles of curries, noodles and rice dishes. Very extensive tea menu. Dining environment is very serene. Kitchen is at the back and you can hear the wok in action. It wasn't busy at all on a Thursday lunch so service was decent. What was ordered: Burmese style chicken biryani Burmese vegetable curry Burmese pad thai with beef Not sure what makes the flavours Burmese but we did enjoy the dishes we ordered. Biryani came with a side sauce and big chunks of chicken. Rice was perfect. The vegetables curry is coconut based and had a nice kick to it. Generous pieces of beef in the pad Thai. Portions were decent and prices not outrageous. A bit out of the way for us but would be worth another visit.

    Located in Bayview Village Mall, Pōpa is a hidden gem bringing bold and vibrant flavors of Burmese and East Asian cuisine to North York. This restaurant is always empty when I pass by, which is sad because it's so good. We ordered a bunch of meals to share. We started with the platha with chicken curry and mango salad. The mango salad was so refreshing and flavorful. I think everything we ate contained nuts (so be careful if you have allergies). But the nuts offered a really nice crunch and flavor. The bread and curry were really good too. But seemed small for a shareable. It only came with one piece of bread, we requested another piece which they didn't charge for which was nice of them. For the mains, we ordered the fiery chicken, black pepper beef, and pad thai. The chicken was my favorite which is shocking because I'm not usually a fan of chicken. It was mildly spicy in my opinion but my parents thought it was very spicy. The black pepper beef was good but had too much salt so we couldn't eat a lot of it. The pad Thai was really good, it had a strong flavor, I couldn't pinpoint what it was but it was really good. The pad Thai portion was huge! I ate it over 2 days. The reason I didn't give this restaurant 5 stars is because the ambiance was off, there wasn't any music or anything. The bathroom was really dirty. And I think the meats should come with complimentary rice. It was just a lot of meat and no carbs with those dishes.

    I came here on a Thursday evening for Summerlicious, and I booked a table 2 days in advance. It got pretty crowded closer to dinner time. The summerlicious menu ($35) came with a 3 course meal (appetizer, main, and dessert). I ordered the lamb baos, Rangoon chicken curry, and the chai tea cheesecake, plus, I added an order of fried beef momos ($14). Honestly speaking, everything tasted average to me. The lamb baos had a good kick to it, and the bao was soft, but I didn't really taste the lamb. The curry was too milky and plain, there was nothing besides chicken inside. And the cheesecake was like a mousse cake. The momos were tiny and came with 4 pieces. Their regular menu is extensive and they also have a big tea menu. Staff were nice and attentive. Seats are comfortable and very spacious. Washrooms weren't very clean though.

    Came during winterlicious. The $35 set menu was pretty good deal overall and gave us the opportunity to try this restaurant. We had the Mango slaw and the crispy chicken as appetizers. The mango slaw was really good and refreshing. The crispy chicken flavour was good but it was not crispy. The main course we had the steak kebat and the shrimp sizzler. We also ordered the Burmese garlic noodles. They were both very good. The garlic noodles were ok but nothing special. For dessert we had the pestel de nata and the Coconut rice pudding. The tart was ok but the rice pudding was surprisingly good.

    As part of the Winterlicious promotion, a friend and I went to Põpa Burmese Kitchen to try their prix fixe menu. I've never tried Burmese food; Winterlicious provides this avenue for cuisines I've been curious about. The restaurant is nestled inside Bayview Village Shopping Centre, which made for a pleasant dining experience. We each had the mango slaw to start, while slightly sweet, did not set us up for the epic flavours to come. My main course of the Shrimp Sizzler lived up to its title. Mixed with a number of spices which were more savoury to the tongue rather than singeing, the Shrimp Sizzler was quite a delicious dish. My friend chose the Steak Kebat, a heavily spiced beefsteak with assorted vegetables that required a large pull of water with each bite. To finish, we had the coconut rice pudding which cooled our palates so quickly I didn't have time to take a picture! All in all, a great menu for a restaurant I'd love to try again in the future.

    POPA Burmese Kitchen is still one of my favourite go-to spot inside Bayview Village Shopping Mall. The food, drinks and service are always amazing! I'm been a huge fan since they first opened. 5 stars in my books because they brough Shan Tofu back (they took it off the menu for a long time), and they always have Macau Egg Tarts :D!!! This restaurant deserves more attention and recognition. The food is always delicious. Highly recommend the Shan Tofu, Khow Suey (presentation is beautiful), Rangoon Chicken Curry (not spicy, yayy), and the freshly made Macau Egg Tart. The menu has a lot of Indian, Thai, Malaysian, and Chinese influences; it always excites me to try something new here!

    My group came here for a Winterlicious dinner and left pretty disappointed in the overall experience. Food: None of appetizers or mains were hot, and the chicken satay and chicken bao appetizers both had overcooked and dry chicken. Our mains didn't arrive together and in fact there was quite some time between dishes to come out, only for it to arrive warm. My other guests finished their mains before mine arrived. The shrimp curry came with 6 small pieces of shrimp, comparable to the small shrimp in fried rice. Rice and curry were both only warm. The beef kebat had good spice but was warm, rice over cooked and beef slightly tough. The flavours in both were good despite its temperature. The vegetable khowsuey was presented nicely but was a very small portion with just 2 broccoli florets and 1 piece of cauliflower. The rice noodles were also overcooked but the dish wasn't hot. The desserts seemed like store bought mass produced desserts. The coconut mousse tasted like firm whipped cream. Environment: At first glance the space is nice and clean. But then I noticed that some tables and chairs had duct tape along the side. Service was polite but almost non-existent. We had empty glasses for most of our meal and nobody checked in on us.

    Came here for a friend gathering and I would Say the service was friendly.I ordered plates with curry and the beef kebat. I didn't find the food outstanding or anything special. I was warned the beef kebat was super spicy , server said it a level 10/10 but I didn't find it spicy at all it was more like a 3/10 for me. Overall food was ok but I don't think it would be one of those restaurants I would crave and want to come back.

    In the heart of Bayview Village, this Burmese restaurant is such a change from the usual places. Our group gathered and ate family style with a taste of many dishes. The portions are a bit small and some were heavy on the salt, but pleasant in small servings. Very unique flavours, reminded me of a mix between Indian and Chinese cuisine. Really friendly server and a nice place to visit!

    I had a few friends over one saturday night and before we went for dinner in my area. Saw this place online, relatively closeby and Burmese cuisine sounded interesting so we decided to check it out. Tucked away in Bayview Villiage it was pretty quiet as we were the only people inside. We order a few plates to share family style. First we started with the fried calamari. They were large sized rings that came in a stone bowl. Pretty substantial pieces of calamari but we found the batter more like fish and chips, thick and pretty oily. For the mains we had the tea leaf friend rice, village fish curry and Chicken Khowsuey. We like the tea leaf fried rice was decent and seasoned well, although we didn't pick up any tea leaf notes. The Fish curry was a tomoato based curry and suprisingly bland, lacking any flavour. The Chicken Khowsuey had the best presentation. I really liked how it came out in the rustic tray and all the little condiments to add to the dish. They used chicken breast which ended up being dry and again didn't have enough flavour. All in all nothing really jumped out and left us wondering what was really Burmese about the dishes. The overall service was good though, the staff was attentive and accomdating, allbeit we were the only ones eating at that time.

    The ambiance in the restaurant is nice, and the presentation of the food was classy. Is enjoyed the tea leaf salad - I didn't really taste the tea leaves but the salad was fresh and perfectly seasoned (not too saucy or salty). The pad thai was actually really enjoyable too. Best presentation was the khao soi dish, but I found that one to have very little noodles, although it did have an abundance of chunks of chicken. Also the noodles seemed to be rice noodles rather than egg noodles, and got soggier faster. The fish curry was tomato-y, and the fish tasted kind of fishy...wasn't my favourite dish of the night.

    The good: Let's start with the mains (you'll find out why later)! I tried the khowsuey and the tea leaf fried rice. I loved the khowsuey and thought it was beautifully presented. You get a big bowl with little plates of seasoning on a tray. The tea leaf fried rice was quite tasty too. From knowing someone that has visited Burma, the flavours and dishes are more of a western take than what you would find there. However, it was still a pleasure to eat this cuisine! The not so good/tip: Hard pass on the appetizers! I've tried the baos and the dynamite shrimp on two separate occasions, and was disappointed by both. The baos were nothing special and the dynamite shrimp reminded me of a dried tempura that was cooked in a Japanese/western style.

We arrived at about 8:30pm on a Friday night, and were wholly confused when we walked into a coffee shop. I initially thought that we had accidentally walked into a speakeasy as I could hear a ton of noise and music coming from the back door. The hostess at the coffee bar directed us to the back, and we checked in there. As we didn't have reservations, we ended up sitting at the high top communal table. It was super packed at 8:30pm! We got a few drinks to start while we perused the menu. We decided on - Thai Style Oysters ($17) - Nahm Jim, Chili jam, crispy shallots, and cilantro; these were so good! They were served raw, which is our favorite way to eat oysters. The toppings balanced out the saltiness/brine of the oysters. Ceviche ($32) - Yellowtail Tuna, heirloom cherry tomatoes, greens; this was not our favorite. I realized that I am not a fan of warm, raw fish and prefer my fish to be chilled. The flavor was good, but the warmness of the yellowtail was off putting. Thai Beef Tartare ($27) - AAA beef, larb seasoning, seasonal vegetables; this was like an elevated larb. It looked like we got one sliced sausage...I think two would have been fair for the price. Char Siu Short Rib ($66) - Maple syrup, shrimp paste, laab seasoning, lemongrass; THIS was the STAR of the show! The meat was tender and juicy, it was thick cut, and we appreciated the portion size. Overall it was a decent experience; we loved that they stayed true to the true thai flavors and didn't shy away from using chilis. If we were to go back again, I would order less things with Laab seasoning. Most of the items we chose ended up tasting the same after a few bites because we ordered too many items with laab and fried shallots. This was our own mistake, and no fault of the restaurants.

As a testament to both the kindness of my friends and the exceptional staff at Lao Lao, they were able to accommodate us even though I arrived nearly two hours late on a busy Saturday evening. Originally, our table was only reserved until 8:00 p.m.--the exact time I finally arrived. Thankfully, with the help of our incredible server, Savanna N., everything worked out. Her professionalism, warmth, and willingness to help truly made the evening possible. More than anything, I hoped the wait would be worthwhile for my friends, who were visiting for the first time. I'm happy to say they absolutely loved it--especially the outstanding hospitality and customer service. A huge thank you to Savanna and the entire team for making us feel so welcome. As for the food, every dish was delicious. Nothing disappointed. The papaya salad was such a hit that we ordered it twice. The Beef Massaman Curry, Crispy Lao Spiced Chips, Banana Leaf Steamed Fish, and the seasonal Vermicelli Noodle in Chicken Coconut Red Curry were all exceptional. Although it had been about a year since my last visit, I was delighted to see that Lao Lao remains consistently excellent in its food, quality, and service. Bravo!
