Please just don't get the frittata. Our server seemed to forget our order of two items, so tables seated much later than ours received their food earlier. The frittata suffers some glaring problems. I never asked for egg whites only but that's what I got--one thing they did right was they didn't charge me extra for it. It conspicuously lacked salt. I had to shake the salt over the food throughout my meal to make it somewhat palatable. The most egregious error though is to serve a mushroom spinach frittata without COOKING the mushrooms and spinach first. Those are both notoriously watery, so when I pierced my frittata a deluge of unseasoned spinach mushroom juice flooded the cast iron pan. Add to the fact this is spineless dish is served with goat cheese... you can imagine how it pans out. The breakfast sandwich stated it had avocado on the menu but it was missing. There were faint smears of a mustard-colored potential aioli but it didn't resemble avocado. The other tables looked very happy with their French toasts, pancakes, and waffles. We got to try food from the main dining room and the lounge side, both were equally very good. I came here with many dates before :-) again, at the Concourse d'Elegance event for Monterey Car Week, then recently with my parents. My parents couldn't stop taking pictures of the view rocks and the ocean. The moment we got in, the valet supervisor even recognize me and said hello right away. The hostess looks like the beautiful younger version of Diane Ross, she has a big smile, she was so nice. It took me quite a long time to pen this review, because I felt a little "so-so" about the whole affair... This is the hotel restaurant at Hyatt Carmel Highlands, the hotel at which we stayed several nights in January. My boyfriend made a reservation here for the night of our arrival to ease on the logistics of getting to an offsite restaurant, etc. Obviously it is quite pricey, but its reputation is quite stellar. Unfortunately, I felt the food was a bit...boring. It was all just fine, but nothing stood out. The view is something to behold...but obviously, not at night. So I stared at my reflection every time I glanced out the window. This obviously is not their fault entirely, but I would recommend for stellar views that this spot is best for an early dinner (at suneset!) or brunch, etc. Otherwise the view is a moot point, and you are paying quite heavily for it. The wine list is quite extensive as you might imagine. We enjoyed a nice bottle of a California Cabernet, and no complaints. The sommelier even breezed by our table to check in, a nice touch. For a $300 dinner bill I expected to be wow'ed a bit more...and the only thing I walked away with was "well, don't eat there at night." Despite knowing there is a brilliant ocean view, you cannot see it. That's my .02 cents. I'd certainly try again on our next trip (especially if we stay at the hotel), but this is a fine dining type restaurant where the food doesn't quite measure up to what I had hoped for. read more

Stunning. Breathtaking. California Market is a cafe-style, casual place sitting high above the cliffs. If you're lucky enough to have a table near the railing, the view rivals the best anywhere in the world. When in the Carmel and/or Monterrey area, there is no place I'd rather sit, eat, and enjoy than here. Offering breakfast, sandwiches, burgers, appetizers, salads, cocktails, and lighter fare than the more formal, Pacific Edge. If you can afford, stay at the Hotel (Highlands Inn)...you never really have to leave the premises. Extremely recommended, and a very memorable experience I've had the pleasure of on multiple occasions. I can't wait to return. read more

Tucked away in the ultra-cozy hamlet of Hyatt Carmel Highlands is California Market (only open for breakfast and lunch; for dinner options and to watch the sunset, you need to visit their upscale sister restaurant, Pacific's Edge). The views here are stunning! Panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Santa Lucia Mountains and the breathtaking rugged Big Sur Coastline. It's pure breakfast bliss! Binoculars are on every table...so you just might be lucky enough to view some sea lions or marine life; at the very least, you'll be privy to one spectacular view (still remarkable with a little rolling fog). The service is outstanding...they really care that you walk away with a great experience. We came in for Sunday breakfast and requested a table on their expansive redwood patio, perched right over the Hyatt pool and the cozy bungelow suites. For breakfast, my choice was the Dungeness Crab Benedict($18) with home fries. My friend ordered the Crab & Spinach Omelette with avocado and English muffins ($17). Ingredients are fresh and procured locally. The portions are decent and they are very liberal with the seafood. Carmel Hyatt also has a cute gift/sundry shop right next to the California Market. We checked it out before breakfast (during our wait) and sampled some exotic lotions, perfumes and jewelry. They have beautiful scarves, bottles of wine, picnic items, kitchen gadgets and more. The lady working here is very sweet too. We enjoyed our little breakfast seafood soiree. My husband and I came here after reading y'all's great reviews of this place and we weren't disappointed. It was a little hard to find even with the GPS (actually the GPS was the problem, it was totally off course this time and routed us wrong, but we found the place eventually after a bit of logical reasoning, and we have a great GPS per Amazon reviews... hmm...). The place is of course fancy given it's a hotel restaurant and the view was spectacular although at 2/2:30 pm, the sun was still high and so we didn't get any sunset shots but we had a great time there all the same. Per y'all's great recommendations, I ordered the Seafood Cioppino and it was FANTASTIC! Generous portions of clams, scallops, salmon, halibut (I think), one prawn (?!), and squid in a delicious, perfectly seasoned spicy broth with a few french bread slices to dip in. Husband doesn't do spicy (at all...), so I asked the waitress what they're famous for and she said the fish tacos (and Cioppino) so I ordered my husband the fish tacos with fries and he was very satisfied with that dish. I had a couple of bites of the fish tacos and the fish was very good. The prices were steep but understandably so being it's a Hyatt hotel restaurant with a spectacular view of the ocean, and using a restaurant dot com gift certificate, it was very worth it. Will do it again next time we come even if it's a bit of a drive from Pacific Grove where we were staying for a few days. Pacific's Edge is a beautiful restaurant situated in the Hyatt in Carmel overlooking Big Sur. It is a restaurant with great views of the ocean, and we got to see the sunset during our dinner. Unfortunately, the Hyatt messed up our suite that overlooks the ocean because they forgot to put a lockable safe in it. So we were late to the dinner and we miss our reservation. Which is very upsetting. I really am not pleased with this hotel and their management and I would like to receive my money back for my stay because it was very unpleasant dealing with the maintenance man trying to put the safe in. This is not at all affiliated with the restaurant, just the hotel, but the restaurant is within the hotel, so they should've honored our reservation. Since it is the hotel's mistake, they should've seated us right away. Anyway, the hostess DIANA was very nice and seated us after fifteen minutes of her sitting at the bar. I got a Diet Coke with lime and my mom got a martini. They gave us peanuts and snacks so we wouldn't starve. The waiter, BART, was so friendly and helpful. He was quick, nice, and funny. My mother and I shared the brussel sprouts and the tuna tartare- wonderful plating, rich, and delicious. Small portions, which we enjoyed, because we are both size 6 and want to stay that way. LOL We then ordered the rib eye medium rare, and we got a side of mushrooms instead of potatoes, to keep it slim. We got some asparagus, too. The sunset was so beautiful and I loved eating while looking at the beautiful views. The rib eye was cooked to perfection and it came with a delicious chimichurri sauce. I got even more sauce to add to the flavor. The cut, however, was a bit fatty and too bloody for my taste. We had chocolate and vanilla ice cream with berries for dessert, and it was delicious. Overall, I decided to give this restaurant 4 stars, because it was tasty and had beautiful views. One star is dropped because it didn't STUN me or anything, and the hotel should've coordinated better with the restaurant that it owns/houses to allow us to be seated for our 7:30 PM reservation due to their mistake. I am a huge foodie and I loved this place, would definitely go back. We sat at this window-side ocean view table but it was next to service area so it was not very pleasant. Hellz yeah this place is 5 stars all the way I'd easily give it 100 bazillion if I could... even without the drop dead gorgeous view. Between my husband and I, we sampled at least 8 items on the menu... 10 if you include dessert... 11 if you include the Champagne! Real Champagne... not sparkling wine. We went all out and it was worth every penny. I wish everyone could dine here at least once. I would like to be able to describe to you how wonderful the morsels here were, but I can't even begin to explain the complexity of all the beautiful flavors. My boyfriend and I came here only because I had bought a coupon from restaurants.com. The reviews were decent and I wanted to see the view everyone commented about. And I was not disappointed. Even on the overcast day we went, it was still a beautiful view. Only thing bad side is the outdoor seating is above a pool for the hotel guests. So it was weird to have kids underneath. That part was not romantic. About the food, I had the Seafood Cioppino, so delicious with just the right balance of herbs and not too tomato-y. The seafood was cooked perfect and I just couldn't stop dipping my bread into the broth. I had to ask our waiter for more table bread two or three times because I didn't want to leave any broth on my plate. yumm. The boyfriend had their "special" Seafood Pasta. It was good, but only had five, FIVE noodles. What's with that? Our bill ended up being only $25, including tip because of our coupon. So I definitely think it was totally worth it. Ugh, I had a horrible experience here mostly because of my rude waiter named Fernandez. I'm not sure if it's because I brought in a restaurant.com coupon that included 18% gratuity so he didn't feel like he had to be nice to us, or if it's because I didn't order any wine at the beginning and he thought I was being cheap. I don't handle alcohol too well, so I usually don't order any wine with my meals if I want to enjoy it. Here's a few examples of what our server did during the meal to upset me: - After we got seated I took out my DSLR to take some photos since we had a window seat with a nice view. I set my camera down after the bread came. Fernandez comes by and tells me "You should put your camera away otherwise we'll probably get food on it." He said this with some attitude, when he could have just asked me to move it to other side away from where they serve the food. I don't understand why I should put my camera away, and I've never had anyone else ever tell me to do that at a restaurant. - After our food came, I noticed he didn't come by to check up on us for a long time. I didn't particularly care, but I only noticed because I overheard him asking the table in front of us, then walking past us and checked up on the table behind us. He briefly came by when we were almost done with our entrees and said "How's the food" and "Okay". He was chatting quite a bit with those two tables about the food, weather, and Carmel, but didn't even bother speaking more than a few words to us. - When it came time for dessert, we were quite full and decided to share the Highlands Inn Kit Cat bar. After I ordered saying "We'll have a ..", our server replied with "Just one?" There was no need for him to make that comment. - After we finished dessert a good 20 min passed and our server did not come by to give us the check so we tried to flag him down. He made eye contact and I thought he nodded, but continued to walk to another table so we had to wait another 5-10 min. It was getting late and I wanted to leave so I was irritated that I had to wait even longer for him. As for the food, we had the Roasted Beet Carpaccio and Yellowfin Tuna Tartare for starters. I enjoyed the beets more than the tuna tartare which is usually my favorite. I found the sauce a little too creamy for my taste, and I didn't like the brioche croutons it came with. For entrees we had the Bone-In Ribeye and the California White Sea Bass which were both pretty good too. My favorite part of the meal was the Highlands Inn "Kit Cat" Bar that we had for dessert. Overall 4 stars for the food, -1 star for the horrible service, -1 star for the price. I wouldn't come back just because I didn't find the food that impressive and was not worth the price. read more

The staff (our servers were Rosemary and Victor) was courteous, friendly, and extremely attentive. We got there pretty early in the day and the manager (Fidel) greeted us and gave us a little tour of the restaurant and the patio. In my opinion, there is no restaurant on the Monterey Peninsula with a better ocean view. A few weeks ago, my wife & I dropped by for brunch, just to take in the scenery. They had remodeled and revamped since our last visit, and the new space is spectacular, well-designed to capture the drama of the cliffs and the Pacific Ocean. Some of the photos on Yelp are pre-remodel and some are new. The menu was a pleasant surprise...creative options at fair prices (not cheap, but not overpriced, and well worth it given the ambiance and service.) I got the corned beef hash, my wife the french toast. We shared a pear-something-or-other martini...specialty cocktail....just because it was Sunday and everything about the place says "relax and enjoy yourself." Since their remodel, this has become our favorite breakfast place on the peninsula. Every time we go somewhere else, we are comparing it to the California Market at Pacific's Edge. read more

Got a great corner 2 top table -- view would have been stellar, if it had been daylight, but it was still lovely at night, with the moon and the clouds and the water. A very private table because the two of you sit 90' to each other, with only glass on the other two sides, so your back is to the rest of the diners. Sommelier made a great wine recommendation with our dinner selections. Our food was great -- braised short ribs were divine and rack of lamb was lovely. The bad: Our waitress was very friendly and nice; however, the greet time was in excess of 5 minutes (closer to 10), she didn't tell us about any daily specials when she gave us the menus and wine list, so we had already ordered our wine based upon our initial review of the menu items as the night was already dragging a bit; and the bus boy and sommelier did the rest of her work, including delivering our food, clearing plates, asking about water and bread refills and dessert order, etc. Once our order was in, she essentially disappeared. We had noted in our reservation that it was our anniversary & the hostess wished us happy anniversary as did our waitress. But, coincidentally the two tables next to our also were celebrating anniversaries -- one of them got two glasses of champagne and the other got a free dessert with a candle, etc. So, for our waitress to simply say "Happy Anniversary" seemed a bit hollow and awkward. What makes it worse is the fact that we used a Restaurant.com gift certificate for $25, which automatically added 18% to our total bill, including our $165 bottle of wine and the tax amount. [We are frugal -- that's how we afford our wine!] So our tip amount was over $47 for two entrees that totalled $99. I'm hoping the sommelier got part of the tip share, because after our bill was $303 (including the $47 tip and $27 tax), we chose not to tip him. We expected the 18% on the food -- but not on the wine or the tax. [MANAGEMENT: YOU MAY WANT TO RECONSIDER A FIXED 18% WHEN SOMEONE SPENDS $165 on wine]. Affixing a mandatory tip to a bottle of wine is unconscionable. We would have given her a $20 tip on the approx $100 food bill (prior to the $25 gift certificate) [NOTE -- which would have been 20%, which is more than 18%] and the Somm $20 or $25 on the wine separately. You do not customarily tip the same amount (15 - 20%) on the marked up bottle of wine [$165 for a $75 retail (not even wholesale) bottle], particularly if you have a Somm in addition to the waiter. THAT IS JUST BASIC FRONT OF THE HOUSE SERVICE KNOWLEDGE. Net -- we probably would have spent within $5 - $10 of the same amount at the end of the meal. But -- the way it was handled and the mandatory 18% on WINE was beyond the pale . . . . If the wine hadn't been so delicious, we definitely would have left with a very bad taste in our mouth. We love Carmel, we are Hyatt Gold Passport Members, we like wine and views -- but we will be hard pressed to EVER visit or recommend this restaurant. It's a shame -- it was a lovely evening, we enjoyed our meal and the wine and the views. This could have been a 4 Star (not quite 5 Star review -- still the issues with Sonja's service). In the spirit of keeping this short, I'm exceptionally unimpressed. While the hotel is a truly great experience, I would not recommend this restaurant. Given the quality of the food, you'd expect everything to be at least 25% cheaper. (The cioppino had a mixture of seafood -- one unrecognizable item seemed to be in a texture-competition with beef jerky.) The service is disorganized and leaves one questioning whether or not their allergies are being taken seriously. There are many other reasons why I would avoid this restaurant but to be curt, there are much better places within the vicinity. read more

The best views in California!! There is nothing like watching the sun go down on a clear and beautiful sunny day on the Monterey Coast. WOW. We stopped by for cocktails on our 16th anniversary - we planned to have dinner elsewhere in Carmel. They have two bar areas for drinks, both with great views. After several cocktails, feeling great, and no desire to drive elsewhere for dinner, we decided to stay for dinner. We got the corner table with 180 degree views of the ocean and carmel mountains. The food was unbelievable. I had the braised short rib - it was cooked for 12 hours i believe. WOW!! The waiters are amazing - exceptional service!!! Great dining experience. Grazie Highlands Inn! There was a wedding downstairs which was cool to see. We stopped by the pool and hung out at the firepit. It was a magical night. Very romantic. Great for cocktails or a full night of hanging out at this amazing hotel. Either way you cant go wrong, unless you forgot your checkbook. Cha ching! read more

Spectacular view and okay food. When I come here I try to always get the same corner table on the far left side of the restaurant in my opinion it's the best seat in the house. I come here for breakfast when I'm in town and generally get the coffee with pancakes and eggs to share. The service is not good, but I sometimes don't mind. I come here to relax and enjoy the view, so it's nice to be left alone to enjoy everything. But this mornings experience with our nonexistent server was something I have yet to experience here. today when I went for brunch our waitress completely forgot about us. And inside the restaurant there were maybe three other tables. She came the first time and went straight to "what do you want to order" and that was it from here. We got restless so through the 45 minutes there we would ask for assistance from whoever was near. Meaning somebody else took our drinks, brought us our drinks, somebody different checked in on us to ask if we needed water (because no one offered and or brought water) a different person refilled my coffee, and a different person brought us our food. About half way through the meal the original woman stopped and asked us "if we needed anything else" and we said no, she walked away and came back about 10 minutes later to bring us the check. Now after this not a single person stopped by our table. Even though we had a card showing out the top and set on the corner of the table, after about 15 minutes wait just waiting to pay for the food we got up and walked over to the hostess who was busy on the phone and we stood there and waited to close out our bill. The buss boy finally came over to see if we needed help. Have to say although I love staying at this hotel and I love the view that it offers they sure do give a large price tag to extremely non existent service, the buss boys were great but that woman waitresses didn't care enough to be working in the restaurant. Like I said before sometimes it's nice to sit and be alone with your friends and family but do have to flag someone down for over 15 minutes to get water or coffee and then to pay the bill. This place could get five stars alone for the view. It's unbelievably beautiful. We had reservations for 8pm, however we showed up early and asked to sit at the bar. The almonds are addicting, the drinks are strong. We went to get our seats and the hostess said she wanted to seat us earlier so we could have a window seat...however the table she took us to was perfect. Almost every seat in the restaurant is facing the view. The hostess is the star of this restaurant. I'm not sure of her name, but she was great. After reading the reviews I wasn't sure what to expect. However everything was perfect. The service, as well as the sommelier were great. For appetizers we order the clam chowder, and the osteria caviar. The clam chowder was good, the caviar was the star of the evening...besides the sunset. I would highly recommend it to anyone with a warning....it may be highly addicting. Entrees we had the bone in rib chop....sinful, and the yellowfin tuna....again excellent. The portions are great, maybe a bit too much. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone who enjoys good food and good service. read more

We had a late breakfast here during our coastal getaway. Arrived around 10:15am. Choice of indoor or outdoor seating. As I'm definitely an urban dweller, I said indoors. But outdoor seating is the preferred. We were seated in the small sunny intimate dining room with wonderful views of the Big Sur coast. There was a party of two at the prime table closest to the window. We sat at the table behind them. Once they left we got a clear shot of the stunning view. The view was matched by our scrumptious breakfast. Ample food. I had the pancakes with a side of chicken sausage and hubby had the corned beef hash with two poached eggs with sourdough toast. Great attentive service. Given that the resort is a class act, I'm happy to say the food matched it. My only minor gripe - as we were late breakfast diners, the staff was gearing up for the lunch shift. Lots of plates banging and flatware clanging. read more

We went here for our 3rd anniversary dinner, purely to eat while having an amazing view of the setting sun on the Pacific ocean. They did have a chef's tasting menu but we really weren't too excited about the offerings. They have an extensive wine list, and had a sommolier available for any questions. Ultimately we decided to create our own tasting menu, and ordered a la carte. We started out with the Monterey abalone with mussel saffron emulsion, parsnip puree and black trumpet mushrooms. I was surprised by how tender the abalone was. The black trumpet mushrooms gave the dish a great depth and earthiness. My husband also had an order of oysters. They were very fresh, and came with some great garnishes. For our second course we split an order of the porcini soup. It had an espresso foam and a brioche crouton. The kitchen was kind enough to split our order into 2 separate bowls. This soup was amazing! It was so silky, and mushroom-tastic! Our main course, I had the Maine day boat scallops. Scallops are my favorite food, and I can't resist getting them whenever I can. At first I was a bit disappointed with the portion size, of only 3 scallops, but they were very large, and proved to be more than enough. They were served on top of a sunchoke, chantarelle gratin and a black truffle emulsion. So good. One of the best scallop dishes I have had in a very long time! My husband had the coriander crusted, pan seared yellow fin tuna. We asked our server whether or not this tuna was sustainably caught or not, and he went to the trouble to ask the chef where and when the fish was purchased. It was a sustainably, line-caught fish, by the way. His fish was served on top of baby bok choy, and fingerling potatoes. Very tasty. For dessert my husband ordered the salted peanut butter~caramel bar comprised of peanut shortbread, jivara chocolate ganache, caramel sauce, and a milk chocolate~caramel mousse. They brought out our desserts with "Happy Anniversary" written in chocolate on our plates. It was a very touching gesture, and we really felt that our special occasion was important to the staff as well. Overall this was a very special dinner, and the bill with tip was $275. That includes 4 glasses of wine (2 per person), 2 first courses, 1 soup, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts, all ordered ala carte. OK, let's start off by saying that, yes, the views are unbeatable. We are local and there really isn't much better. That being said... We've been looking forward to splurging on a night out at Pacific's Edge for some time. We finally made it on, of all nights, a Tuesday! We were seated at 6:15 - perfect for the sunset. You must get a seating before 7:00 or else you'll be looking at your reflection in the giant windows rather than the gorgeous Pacific coast. We had a glass of wine in the lounge before our seating and the view was spectacular. If I had known better, we would have just stayed in the lounge and ordered off that menu...but I'll get to that. We were seated in what should have been the best seat in the house, the southern corner seat. Except that the giant picture window in front of us had something wrong with it...it was all blurry and fogged (and the others weren't). They need to fix that. I ordered the tasting menu: White Asparagus Salad - totally bland and uninspired. Maine Lobster - OK, caviar was good though. Veal Costoletta Chop - tasty...as expected tender and flavorful Chocolate Marquise - Ummm....nothing special. Husband claims he's had better from Sam's Club!!! My husband ordered: Clam chowder - OK, but you can find better even on Fisherman's Wharf (and that's not saying much!) Rack of Lamb - perfectly prepared and YUMMY! Grilled Asparagus - Perfection as well! Overall, the service was at best slow and at worst we wondered (along with the tables around us) where everyone had gone! The food was so-so (the lamb and asparagus are saving this). The poor waiter brought us the wrong bill first. Then we had to just bring it up to the hostess station (who was MIA). Then I had to track someone down to find my coat and to call up our car. We're pretty easy but COME ON! The sommelier was ridiculously slow. I ordered a glass of sparkling wine and (after sitting with my empty glass for 10 minutes) ordered another glass of white. I would have had more except that no one ever bothered to come over to ask if I wanted more (or to check on us for that matter!!!!) Nor did he ever bother to make ANY suggestions or offer any tastes. The table next to us (we couldn't help but overhearing) was comped their entire meal and wine because they complained so much about the service. OK, I'm not about do that but I would seriously expect better service for this price point. Overall, for the price, not worth it. The view is so beautiful I wanted to like this place - but I just couldn't! If you're after the view (which IS SPECTACULAR) sit in the lounge and order some apps and drinks. You'll be happy you saved about $200. read more

We stay at the Highlands Inn a couple of times a year and our tradition is breakfast at California Market on the morning we check out. Unless it is rainy we sit on the deck. Even on a chilly morning the heaters are enough to make it a pleasant experience. Prices are higher than what we normally pay for breakfast, but reasonable when you consider 1) this is a hotel and 2) THE VIEW! On our most recent visit DH found the eggs in his eggs Benedict were a bit underdone. And it seemed to me that his side of potatoes were not as generous as in the past. I opted for the cinnamon French toast which was topped with strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and pecans. A delicious combination. Service was not up to the usual standards. There seemed to be more than enough servers but things seemed slow and out of sync. We had lunch here the day before. DH declared the clam chowder the "best ever." My mushroom bisque may not have been the "best ever" but still had high mark. Our salads were tasty but the portions seemed small -- or perhaps it was because they were served on such large glass plates. A bit overwhelming for our small table. read more

Unbelievably good! I think anyone that visits already knows this restaurant is going to be amazing, as the Hyatt Highlands are amazing as well! Other than the amazing breakfast that we had, the view is also equally beautiful, and I would suggest people stop here even if they are not staying at the resort. By far, the best breakfast is the Point Lobos Benedict, but I also tried the Corned Beef Hash, and that was delicious as well. Went here with my parent as we were staying at the highlands inn. We basically just samples a bunch of small plates and then split one entree. Great selection of appetizers. Really loved the abalone. It was my first time having abalone and it was excellent. The Brussels sprouts were below average, but the mushroom soup was awesome. They accidentally brought us the clam chowder at first so they comped all three soups. Not a bad deal considering we got to try the clam chowder as well. The beet salad was pretty good and the warm bread and butter was great. My dad ordered the short ribs and we all enjoyed it. We did not drink at this meal, but they do have an impressive wine list. Problem is that the cheapest bottle is $60 and the average is above $200. Not for the feint of heart. The view, now, the view is spectacular. Try your best to get a seat at the windows. read more

I still remember the first time I came here with my best friend. She's from Carmel and introduced me to this gem by taking me to lunch here. The view is gorgeous!!! You cannot find better view of the Big Sur and the ocean in another restaurant in this area. Highlands Inn sits up top a hill and I hear the room prices are around $600 a night! I've never stayed here but have been here several times for lunch. On this particular day, we were driving by and I said, let's go for drinks! We came at 4pm, just when the sunset lounge area opened. Sunset lounge is right next to Pacific Edge restaurant which opens for dinner at 5. The drinks are definitely pricey ($15-20 per drink) here but you are paying for the view! My babe ordered his usual manly scotch drink and I got my girly glass of buttery Chard. We sat on their comfy lounge couches and enjoyed the floor to ceiling views of the wonderful coastline. So romantic and relaxing. A must stop if you are in the area. read more

Visiting Carmel for the Christmas holiday and staying at the Highlands we naturally jumped at the idea of eating dinner here. We had a 7PM seating in December, so it was pitch black dark. However we saw the view earlier during check-in and it's pretty amazing. The service was a little slow to get rolling, but once into the meal it was more than satisfactory. For Christmas dinner they had a fixed four course meal and the choices were good. For my main course I had the most amazing bone-in rib chop in my life. Pan seared in a cast iron skillet, it was cooked to a medium-rare perfection! We had a hard time picking a bottle of wine, so one of the in-house Sommelier suggested a bottle of French Pinot Noir. It was wonderful! Why not five stars? Value. Even though an excellent meal, it was very expensive and could have been a better value. read more

Thanks to Yelp, we were entitled to a f-r-e-e breakfast for two during our stay. SALAMAT YELP! Ample seating in and out. You get a great ocean view when seated outside, and there are a few tables inside in front of a roaring fire. Service was impeccable, which is pretty much all through the board at this fine hotel. We ordered the 3 egg omelet, which was brimming with sausage and ham, fresh mushrooms and peppers and lots of gooey cheese. I ordered the corned beef hash, which wasn't has good as the omelet since it was quite dry. The side of bacon were slices of thick cut bacon, and slightly sweet. The servings are huge. This place is pricey, which made me even more thankful that it was free. Next time we come here, I would save my breakfast dollars and spend them at their other restaurant (Pacific's Edge). read more

I came to the Highlands Inn to watch the sun set on the recommendation of a docent at Point Lobos. It's a nice drive up to the inn and the grounds are beautifully landscaped so the walk from the parking lot was also enjoyable. The restaurant is beautiful and the lounge has a big fireplace in the middle makes it feel classy and cozy. We sat at the bar and ordered Calamari, Tuna Tartare and a couple of cocktails. The appetizers were great. Fresh, delicious and beautifully presented. But the highlight was the Cucumber Martini! Vodka, fresh cucumber puree, lime juice and simple syrup. It was heavenly, the best cocktail I've ever had. Refreshing, delicious and just a hint of sweetness. We met fun people, had some spontaneous conversation and enjoyed chatting with the bartender as well. The perfect bar experience! They even have the hooks underneath for ladies' handbags. The sunset did not disappoint and we weren't the only ones there for that reason. It's pricey but definitely worth a stop. read more

Winding down our getaway, we had dinner here at the hotel's restuarant and was very pleasantly surprised. Very good and attentive service. Good sized dishes. The mussels appetizer is a meal in itself. My Peppercorn steak was prepared as ordered. Everything nicely presented at a reasonable price plus a nice view when it's clear. Did not exactly describe stuff clearly and food took a loooooong time to arrive, even when it wasn't busy at all.
