This place is a fantastic Irish pub/ hidden gym that only the locals know about. It's also right behind the Carmel mission Inn and on Highway one so it's easy to get to. It also has one of the best selections for Irish whiskey. It also has outstanding pub food. The hamburger, fried chicken sandwich, and Guinness ribs are my favorite. I think the best times to go there or happy hour and after dinner and you usually are guaranteed to get a spot at the bar. Perfect for groups and party, especially with outdoor seating. Barnyard seems like a tough locatioin for a restaurant. On the Friday we visited, there were lots of places to eat but not enough people. Still, the Beet and Pear Salad ($17) was the best I've had. Fish and Chips ($24) accompanied well. Well margarita ($15) and Black and Tan ($8) also helped. Service was good. Ambiance was difficult to assess because the big attraction was the workers installing a big screen TV way up on the wall. Beautiful Carmel night was highlighted by finding this gem. We sat outside up high in the protected high glass wall balcony. So well taken care of , clean and had the college game on. Inside a man was playing the guitar. So good. Our waiter was friendly , attentive and courteous. We ordered drinks and dinner. Everything was served was as it should be. Cold drinks , warm meal , attentiveness and with a smile. How refreshing to have such great service and good food. We will be back. 10/10. This place earned its regulars largely because of one person: Daniel behind the bar. He was attentive without hovering, remembered what you drank, and made the best Irish coffee I've had anywhere. On my birthday he went out of his way to make it special. He organized a night with live music and even bought a cake out of his own pocket. That's not in any job description. That's just who he is. I came back recently looking forward to seeing him and learned he'd been let go. I'm genuinely sad about it. The drinks are still good, but a bar is more than its menu, and Daniel was a big part of why this one felt like a place worth returning to. Wishing him the best wherever he lands. The food came out promptly, fresh, and delicious. Every dish we tried was full of flavor, and the prices were surprisingly reasonable for the quality and portion size. The clam chowder was not chunky but it was creamy and tasty. The pear and beet salad was nice and fresh with the perfect amount of dressing. Drinks were great - I washed all of the above down with a Bombay Sapphire tonic and a Guinness. The service was absolutely abysmal. It was my first time back in beautiful Carmel and Jose's angry demeanor and poor quality of service absolutely ruined my day. He was angry making drinks for our party for God knows why. We had a private welcome party for my son's (and now wife's) wedding guests coming for the weekend. Caesar was absolutely amazing (ditto on our last visit there as well) and worked to make sure everything went smoothly. We thought the food was great and there were generous portions. On St. Patrick's Day, we decided to go to the quintessential Irish bar. The food was impressive for a bar, and then we learned that they had a full kitchen, the owner introduced himself and asked us if we had tried the Irish coffee. He then told us that he has sent his guys to get trained on the real art of the Irish coffee up at the Buena Vista Café in San Francisco. If you don't know about the Buena Vista, they introduced Irish coffee to the United States in 1952. I must be honest, this was as good of an Irish coffee as the Buena Vista's! Since this experience, i've ordered an Irish coffee at every restaurant I've been to lately on the peninsula. No one comes close. You should definitely try one! read more
