Best place to spend your time in Carmel (between golfing & gallery hopping) If you want to feel local-ish, go here. I drove hundreds of miles for this place. (You should too.) Parker (the owner) is the real deal--passionate, witty, sometimes sarcastic, and genuinely fun. The cozy bar is surrounded by ever-changing photos, art, and laugh-out-loud signage. Stories live here: wall to wall, corner to corner, and everywhere in between. Locals and travelers exchange stories, play dice or cards. The drinks are beautifully basic--three ingredients, one of them ice. No fancy nonsense--just premium pours, neat or on the rocks. *And now the gut punch: they're being forced to close the same month they're celebrating their 100-year anniversary. The new building owners don't seem to care about the character and legacy of Carmel, the devotion of a fourth-generation owner, or what it means to lose a place that's thrived for a century. My wife and I have been here twice (2023, 2025). Both times can't get an old fashioned. Manhattan sure, but it's got a street sign right out front saying "cocktails." It's a tourist trap and a dive bar. Fine for a quick beer and shot. They have George T. Stagg and several high end whiskies on the bar, but you're going To pay Carmel prices for it. *Amending review from 3 stars to 1 star. Owner has resorted to name calling on Google Reviews. Since posting my previous review, I continue to be harassed by the owner and maybe his alter ego "Daniel L" who - for some reason - sent me a direct message 18 days ago. It's possible Daniel is a real person and just an affiliate of the owner. One of the other bartenders maybe? Judging by their typos, perhaps an inebriated patron? The point is, I have no idea who this person is, yet they're messaging me here and saying that they would have thrown me out of the bar. Talk about pent up anger! It's too bad that I didn't reopen the app sooner so I could update my all-too-generous two star review down to one star. I guess it needs to be done within 30 days. So here's an update to the saga of Parker and friends; I've never thought "wish there were a rating less than 1" before but cheers to you for dropping the bar SO low that this option would truly be needed. We're from Canada--we walked into Sades for the hockey game and left feeling like we'd lived through a documentary on human behavior. First off, Parker the bartender? Absolute legend. Pouring drinks in a Trump hat like he's tending bar on Judgment Day. Respect. Playlist was a banger. Drinks? Dangerous. Then the floor show started: * Guy collapsed like he got sniped, pissed himself like it was his final act of defiance. * Minutes later, someone walked in, clocked Parker's hat, signed the door like it was the Declaration of Independence, said "No Trump," and stormed out like they just saved democracy. An instant required component for all future visits to Carmel, Sades called to us from the sidewalk as we passed by on our way to try to walk in at La Bicyclette (impossible). "That looked like a legit dive bar." So, back we went and found bros both local and not chilling with bar keep Parker who has more local color than Carmel can contain. We were lightweights ordering only one beer each, but a great local beer it was from Monterey's Alvarado St Brewery. Parker is full of memorable one liners. I asked him "What's good?" and he answered "A dive bar in Carmel. We make it simple for the complicated people" and he's not wrong! Carmel is simultaneously enchanting and astoundingly privileged. What better medicine than a cash only bar that serves drinks with "three ingredients, one of which is ice" (another Parker quote)? One final shout out for Parker: we had a rezzie and our well-Carmeled bar keep recommended The Flying Fish as a better choice with dessert at Patisserie Boissiere. At both places we mentioned his name and received preferential treatment. So we asked the pastry chef to recommend Parker's favorite dessert and he gave us three choices, we picked the coconut cream pie and left it at Sades for him! We missed him by five minutes cuz of an 830 softball game. Justin from Dallas recommended we leave it in the fridge so we hope it got to him. Our new favorite bar in Carmel. We've had a family home in Carmel for 30 years- how we never stumbled upon this gem is beyond me. I suppose realistically I was just busy raising my kids and wasn't out at the bars very often. In any case, my kids are grown now, and Sade's is exactly the type of place my husband and I like. Not pretentious at all, which can be hard to find in Carmel. Dive bar atmosphere with good music, nice regulars and great people watching. The best thing about this place is their attitude. Basically don't come here if you're easily offended or if you melt like a snowflake when you encounter someone who might think differently than you. I love supporting a local family owned business. Bring cash, it's cash only, but they do have an ATM in the back of the bar if you need, and there's a Wells Fargo right down the street. One feels as if they are in a European Irish or British pub. I liked the nice wooden bar and the massive old school mirror decor. Apparently they have been around for over 70 years. me and my girlfriend stopped in here for a drink after a great dinner. Everyone's raved about the people in the town and we had great interactions till we walked into sades cocktail and was immediately insulted by the bartender. He mocked us for asking him to refill or recycle our bottle that we got since we were dehydrated. He was making fun of us to other customers and just made it an extremely uncomfortable situation. I wouldn't of been surprised if it escalated to something more hateful to the two of us. We bought two shots and left because we were simply not in the mood to be hate crimed. Unsure what was up but this place is truly awful, and literally just not safe. Also just a bad selection of spirits and literally everything else. I don't really mind, but it was obvious how trashed other people were compared my group. I think locals are treated differently than out-of-town travelers.
