After 30 minutes of researching on yelp, we finally decided on this place for lunch in Carmel even though it got 3.5 stars rating on yelp. This place is awesome! I was very happy to find it surrounded by great views, be seated with panoramic view after telling the manager it's for our valentines celebration, had very friendly and attentive restaurant staff taking our orders and checking on us, and also enjoyed the food here. To sum up: beautiful views, okay food and service. This restaurant has gorgeous ocean views and very beautiful decor. I was pretty wowed by the everything when I walked in, but my experience here was just okay in terms of food and service. The service was decent, not rude but definitely not very attentive. I started with the clam chowder, which was pretty decent. I thought that the flavors could have been a little more "fishy", it just felt a little too creamy to me. I followed that with the seafood cioppino, which was delicious but WAY too salty. They served some garlic bread on the side, which helped with the saltiness but I was craving some pasta or another starch to help. On the upside they do give you a generous portion of seafood in the cioppino, but I'm not kidding when I say it was salty - like swelled fingers from sodium intake after kind of salty. Service wise, I felt like the busboy was more attentive than our server, with refilling our water and making sure we were good. I was okay with being left alone but even when our waiter came to check he seemed rushed to leave the table. I would still recommend you come here, for the breathtaking view alone - but I think if you venture around Carmel, you'll find better restaurants with better food. And maybe those restaurants will have a view too! I think overall I give it three stars because aside from the view, nothing "wowed" me. It's been a long time since I've such bad food and equally bad service. I don't know where to start, I do, from the moment we walked in to the mostly empty restaurant several staff stared at us and walked past us at the host stand. It took three people to figure out how to offer us a seat, despite having a reservation. 45 minutes later we managed to place our first order. No joke. We were starving. The most bland, flavorless food came out. 100% truth, the corn tortilla was the only taste we could garner from the fish tacos. We told staff it was an important celebration. Nothing. No even a candle or whisper. Our server must have clocked out half way because they just vanished. We had to physically get up and chase staff down. I love their breakfast! I ordered crab Benedict and Andrew ordered French toast. I love the colorful (blue and yellow) potatoes coming with the Benedict and the great mix of crab meat and avocado. The French toast is cooked at the right mix of moisture and density. They come with fruits and pecan, both very delicious. This place has absolutely an unbeatable view, because you are basically dining above the water front and can totally feel the sea breeze and the wave!!! It's so beautiful that I lost my words. Food quality definitely does not match the prices they are charging. In my large party, the food was either over salted, under cooked or burned. They do not serve you water unless you ask and do not refill your water unless asked repeatedly. My husband and I stayed at the hotel and having arrived late after a long drive we went straight to the onsite restaurant, Pacific's Edge. The restaurant and setting is both rustic and modern. We could have eaten in the lively bar but felt the menu was too limited. So we decided to eat in the dining room. I was glad I wore a dress, most patrons had made some effort to dress up a bit. But like everywhere these day, I'm sure jeans would be fine. From start to finish my husband and I enjoyed our dining experience. Everything we ordered was 5 star. Important tip! Make sure to call or reserve your table in advance. (We went for our anniversary right when they opened for dinner-6pm-and we had to wait an hour and a half before being seated.) Although we had to wait, the service made it worth it. Every host, server, busser, bartender, literally everyone on staff went out of their way to make us feel special and even sat us earlier than expected. The food was delicious and the view of the sunset was beautiful. I had the salmon and my husband had the duck. Both dishes were probably the best we've had. For desert I wanted to try something different. The pear-chocolate tart, sadly I wasn't too impressed with the hazelnut chocolate custard, but they added a sweet "congratulations" chocolate bar that just made everything extra special. I was looking forward to eating at this restaurant for quite some time, but it was truly a disappointment. The service was incredibly slow, the quality of food was mediocre and the portion sizes were small. We ordered $28 black truffle and mimolette risotto and $19 dollar 1/2 dozen oyster starters. The risotto tasted like undercooked Mac & Cheese and the oysters were the smallest I have ever seen. Our Cioppino, at $41 a a piece, was over cooked and over salted. Our glasses of wine were brought during our main course and it took an hour to bring the coffee and the check. We arrived at 5:45 and didn't leave until 9:00. It was painfully long. Sadly, it seems you are only paying for the view when you dine at this establishment. The central coast is beautiful and there are many restaurants with gorgeous ocean views and much better food. First off, our server Frederick was amazing. He gave just the right amount of attention, recommendations and had a great personality. He is an absolute pro. Our food was good in some areas and amazing in others. We started with the Heirloom Tomato Burrata. It was good but could have been much better if the tomatoes were at room temperature. No good chef puts tomatoes in the fridge. Next was the Beets Salad. It was surprisingly fantastic. Very fresh and a nice arrangement of beets and fruit. My wife's halibut and risotto was out of this world! My scallops were good but only luke warm. I shared this with Frederick and he brought me another dish within 10 minutes. They were hot and flavorful. He also brought us a very tasty dessert for our anniversary. Also, his wine recommendation did not disappoint. Finally, the cliff side view over the Pacific is unmatched! I don't understand why some people give 3 stars for this restaurant. The food is really good and the portions were generous. The view is great if there's no coastal fog. Our server was great and attentive. This restaurant is not cheap, but you pay for the view, the hotel chain and the quality of the food. It's a great place to celebrate birthday, anniversary or for us who's never been here but heard about Highlands and curious about it. Reservation is highly recommended. My husband and I came here from dinner the other night. From a bottle of wine, to brussels sprouts with cashew cream, to rack of lamb and ribeye steak and sweet potato tart for dessert, all were satisfying and beautiful! My wife & I have enjoyed quiet romantic dinners with spectacular views here over the past 15 years ... we have also stayed at this Hyatt several times with our young daughters No more The restaurant is a disaster We arrived in time time at 5:30pm on Saturday night for the first sitting ... prior we had spent 5/5:30pm on the deck for cocktails and the sunset ... very enjoyable After placing our orders in a sparsely filled dining room, our party of 6 waited 1 hour for our starters ... and then another 20 minutes for our main courses There was a wedding party on the other side of the building but we were assured that would not impact our dinner service The soup arrived cold, and other appetizers arrived in delayed sequence When the main courses arrived, the truffle abalone ravioli had zero sign of t or a ($53) ... the surf 'n turf had 2 small slivers of lobster and a mushy roast-like 4 oz steak swimming in melange of cheese & puréed potatoes (yech) ... the black truffle risotto for 12 year old daughter was enjoyed as was beef Burgoyne by 14 year old daughter Disaster meal The ambiance was totally destroyed by wedding party which was playing disco from the 70s and 80s ("Brick House" by Rick James, "Super Freak" etc) at VERY loud volume ... even though we were in farthest side of restaurant from the party and it was in room to the side of bar between us, we could not think, let alone converse ... and the restaurant continued to pipe new age Muzak thru the overhead speakers to cause mental stress as the two incongruous music sets clashed in our ears and heads The restaurant management excuse for this disaster? My wife and I came back here during the Summer. The kids were away, and my wife and I took the opportunity to have a nice, romantic dinner together. We've been dining here almost every year for the past 5 years whenever we're in the Monterey Bay Area during the summer. As I mentioned in my earlier reviews, the view of the ocean and Pt. I made reservations here for my friends and I, to kick off my 'Week Long Birthday Celebration'. Thinking everything was said and done, we arrived at the beautiful Hyatt Highlands Inn Resort in Carmel (which is where this restaurant is located) after a dreadful two hour drive up and down steep and curvy roads. The shit hits the fan here, they lost our reservations in their empty dining room, and made us wait an extra 30 minutes to find a "spot" for us to eat, when all the tables outside were empty. Anyhow, we were seated as far away from the amazing view (which is probably the only reason tourists come here) so we asked to sit at one of the empty tables closer to the view and we were denied. I would definitely recommend this place for kids since all we heard were screaming babies and whining children. lol. THE FOOD- The food was dreary and subpar to say the least, nothing memorable except me finding a small egg shell in my english muffin, which is just the worst, definitely mediocre for the Hyatt.
