I haven't been here in 2+ years, so I'll keep my review short. You MUST get an early dinner reservation or otherwise you'll miss out on the most unique part of eating at Pacific's Edge, which is the view. The food is good, the service has been fabulous, but the view is out of this world and only available here. If you arrive at dinner past 7ish, there's a chance you'll arrive to a room surrounded by black, deceptively normal-looking windows. At that point, you might as well be eating somewhere much less expensive. Very romantic spot. Although pricey, it's worth it to show someone special a memorable time. read more

My husband made reservations here for our 1st wedding anniversary. Each table has a beautiful view of the coastline & if you get there at the right time you can see the sun setting over the water. Romantic! We opted for the Chef's Tasting Menu for $155/person, which included wine pairings. The Chef's Tasting Menu w/out the wine pairings is $105. The food and service was great. We started off with a deconstructed oysters rockefeller. This was awesome. The second course was halibut. While I LOVE the nice crisp on the outside, our fish was overcooked. Our 3rd course was wagyu beef ordered medium rare. This was cooked perfectly! For dessert we had a passion fruit cake that was done wonderfully. I think this was the most expensive dinner we've ever had, and it was worth the money. It's our first anniversary, so we have to do it big. The regular menu items looked yummy as well, so if you're looking for a romantic place to eat, this is the place. read more

It was our third visit last Saturday on February 11th. Unfortunately, I have to rate the experience significantly lower, because of the decline in appropriate service and food taste. The server, Alex, was overly attentive and kept interrupting us while we held hands and conversed. Obviously he did not pay attention and instead insisted on doing what he wanted regardless of our conversation and intimacy. Instead of approaching from the side to retrieve dishes or lay out knives and forks, he instead reached between and over us as we held hands. We had to stop talking and release hands to accommodate him! I understand restaurants need to turn tables, but we got there early and ordered promptly. His reaching between us started before and after the food arrived. As for the food taste, I ordered the sea bass and my fiance had the short rib. Although portions were very small....something we knew in advance, the fish was overcooked and could have used some sauce to minimize the dryness. As for the short rib, that too could have used some sauce to moisten the dry meat as well as add more flavor. The Cesar salad surprisingly lacked much taste, especially when the two small slivers of anchovy barely had much flavor, not to mention the bland dressing. As for the carrot cake dessert, that too was a disappointment along with the vanilla ice cream that barely tasted vanilla. All-in-all, we selected Pacific Edge because it offers a very romantic ambiance, wonderfully situated, and holds a special meaning for us from earlier experiences, but the service needs to improve, as well as the food taste, to elevate the restaurant to a higher rating in our books and to justify a fourth visit. Not usually a fan of restaurants in hotels, as the captive nature of the beast lends itself to overpriced, inferior food and service. Not the case here. Beautiful setting, decent menu not overloaded with choice. Caesar salad was the greatest I've ever had EVEN though the large garlic crouton had the consistency of a piece of dried dogshit(note to chef there: Get rid of it. Break it up. I don't want to have to break it up so I have crouton in every bite. Doesn't do much for presentation either.) Cold crispy lettuce and great, great dressing. Entree was decent, prices aren't fantastic. It was nighttime so couldn't really enjoy the view, but the interior was beautiful and well appointed. we dropped by for lunch on the way toward Big Sur. it's a bit pricey for what you get, but you are eating in a restaurant in a world class lodging overlooking the ocean. the food was good...i had the fish tacos. the fish was lightly battered and fried and not overwhelming, and was dressed nicely with slaw and avocado. it came with a side of salad or fries or a split of the 2. my wife had the mushroom sandwich, which she was happy with, but i was not too excited about. all-in-all, not a bad spot to stop at in an area which doesn't seem to have a lot of food options. i'd return if i were in the area. hint: book a reservation on open table at non-peak times to score 1000 points read more

I'll clarify: 5 stars for the view, 1 star for the poor service (including the fact that the carpet always needed sweeping), 1 star for accessibility. Don't waste money on a meal here, but do come for the fabulous view and have a drink and appetizers--snag a table which seems as though you're onboard a ship the way the building is designed on the cliffs above the Pacific. Shishito peppers are a good option. Christopher is great on the bar side; the waitstaff in the restaurant were awful; food is expensive and though "reads" well, execution is lacking. When you pay $20 for crab benedict, it should be hot, the eggs perfectly cooked, and never include ketchup on the plate. A good option if you're staying there is to bring your own drinks and snacks to the unstaffed patio outside the dining area. Warning: this is not a destination for physically impaired. Lots of steps everywhere! read more

I'd give this place 3.5 stars. The service was really good, although I felt a bit rushed to order. It was however 8:55pm when I finally ordered. The signature dishes/recommendations were just "eh" such as the abalone and short ribs. The flavor pairings were a bit odd such as the abalone and sea bass dishes with red wine reduction. Red wine just doesn't seem to pair well with seafood, and it turned out to be be way too overpowering on the abalone I ordered. The abalone appetizer, which costed $30, was chewy and disappointing. I did however enjoy the lobster that I ordered as an entree. It was very rich, perhaps a bit too rich as all I could taste was butter on the lobster, in the sauce and in the potato risotto. I love butter, so I did enjoy it nonetheless. I figured I couldn't go wrong with something that is really quite simple to make. I also tried the scallops, and it came with foie gras on top, which again was an odd pairing for me. I like to be able to taste the star ingredient, and again the foie just overpowered the dayboat scallop. My husband's short rib was disappointing, as it tasted very common. However, I've never had short rib at a fancy restaurant that I liked. It just seems like a lesser cut of beef, and no one seems to make it better than Korean restaurants do. The foie gras that my husband ordered though was absolutely delicious! It came with a side of what tasted like cherry jam and toast, and it was very nicely seared. We had a very nice table with a "view." Unfortunately, there was so much fog we couldn't see a thing. Perhaps it is better during the day or at sunset during the foggy season. Overall, the dishes were hit or miss and then quite expensive. My husband was trying to take me to a nice place with a view, but unfortunately it was too foggy to see. With this restaurant, that's what you're really paying a premium for - the view. It's nice to have tried it, but for the price I'd recommend Marinus in Carmel. We had a table in the corner right by the windows so the view was magnificent. There really aren't many options for vegetarians but I had a mushroom ravioli with spinach dish that was amazing. Not too rich...pasta was cooked to perfection. Sometimes a ravioli's edges can be a little hard...these were beautiful clouds that melted in my mouth. read more

This was the highlight of a weekend at the Highlands Inn. The food and drink was both excellent. My lamb was prepared perfectly and the brussel sprout salad was much better than it sounded. The one good thing about staying at Highlands Inn is we could toddled off back up all those stairs to our room in an food/alcohol induced haze. Service is smothering. Just a bit too over the top. I prefer not to have someone at my elbow throughout the entire meal. That took away from some of the ambiance. Be prepared to pay for an wonderful special occasion meal. This restaurant was exactly what we were looking for the first night of our stay at Tickle Pink. It's about 300 feet down the hill, the food was good and the drinks strong. We were seated promplty in a dining room reminiscent of 80's style ski resorts, lots of wood and fire place. Our server was great and really lead us through our choices with great recommendations! We started sharing the sea scallops which were divinely seated in a buerre blanc sauce, yummmy! There were only two but they were big, and just enough to satisfy us both. The wines by the glass menu was through and had many great selections, my date had a LARGE maguerita, which seemed daunting to me in its size, this is good no? Our main courses were not as good as the scallop, but were good nonetheless. I had the beef tenderloin which was cooked perfectly, I would only say that the potatoes below were a little bland. I would have preferred a little more red wine sauce. My date had the halibut special, which, from what i tasted was quite good. Note to the reader, this place isn't inexpensive, so be prepared for entrees that average $25/plate. All in all I am giving this place four stars for convenience to our Inn and because the food really was quite good. The service was GREAT, which also bumps up the rating. Would I go out of my way to come here, well, honestly probably not, but it was great fun for us for that night! read more

Amazing view on a Saturday in January where you could see a few whales coming up to the surface in the far distance. That was my first whale sighting in California. I recommend making reservations ahead of time and requesting outdoor and oceanview seating. I ordered a crabcake sandwich with a side of fries, it was almost 100% crab which is rare and it was tasty! For dessert I got a the chocolate mousse which was also good as well as a iced coffee. Parking is free for guests of the hotel and restaurant. read more

We had our free breakfast here. It was too cold to sit outside so we sat inside and enjoyed the view instead. The voucher was for a certain $ amount so we got to choose what we wanted vs typical buffet or continental breakfast so that was nice. I had the Yogurt Parfait with homemade granola and fresh berries and a side of egg. We got to relax and enjoy our breakfast. I had the clam chowder, which was very different from the plain clam chowder that I was craving for that day. It was more like a herbed clam chowder. My hubby had the Fish tacos, the portion were big and it was also delicious (I had couple bites since I wasn't a fan of my soup). Overall good price for the area and pretty good food. Phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal. One of the best dining experiences I've ever had. I did get married here nine years ago and have a special love for this place. The service was impeccable, fine dining at its best. What words can describe the view...one in a million. Doesn't do it justice. The meal was equally impressive. Started with the best, smoothest oysters and then followed with the Chilean sea bass, which were both perfection. Had the brussel sprout salad (more raw than cooked, but light and tasty) and the mushroom bisque (creamy, not too salty). Lamb was perfectly cooked to medium, ravioli's were quite diappponting ($26 for 5 pieces = more than $5/piece!) and the pasta edges were a bit al dente. The dessert was a hazelnut/chocolate concoction with ice cream ( forgot the name of the dish... sorry)... pretty yummy, but not amazingly fancy +1: Good service -1: Pricey meal; two appetizers + 2 glasses of wine + 2 entrees + 1 dessert = $150 with tax and tip. I've been told Carmel has 3 things- beautiful views, $$$$, and elderly. This restaurant follows the same pattern. The views are gorgeous from the outside patio, however if not seated under one of the few umbrellas its almost impossible to avoid the hot sun overhead. The food was ok, but not worth the price. And the customers were diverse, but I feel like the restaurant is intended for older (60+) couples. Any resultant that serves condiments (in this case, Tabasco) in miniature, individually sealed bottles is meant for elderly folk. I'm not saying my experience here was bad, it was average. In hindsight, it's what I should expect from a Hyatt hotel restaurant. Just not for me. read more

Yay for the savior of Highlands Inn food and service wise! Breakfast - fabulous. Burger - Excellent!. Service - Tony is a champ, Shama a gem. Seems like all the waiters we talk to have been here for decades, which is a testament in itself. The view is all star which is to be expected but I would say even without it it's a restaurant worth enjoying. Also they use the word accouterments on their breakfast menu. YAS! Side note - looks like they're moving locations to make more room for outdoor view friendly meetings. Please don't change your menu or, well, anything else! Side side note - Carmel isn't cheap. Neither is this place. Par for the course though. Id like to add that Clint Eastwood lives around and the fact that his babe of a son could be spotted at any moment makes it all worth it. read more

I give this one star because of the view- although you can get this view simply with a nice drive - to avoid the terrible experience that is this restaurant. We decided to splurge here on our last night in Monterey. The food was nearly inedible. The $58 Ribeye (suggested by the waiter) was ordered medium rare and was well done, rubbery, fatty and just tasteless. The baby potatoes SO dry I could not eat them. My son's lamb chops $56 (deemed "a must") were RARE and had TONS of fat- big white, cold globules of fat. YUCK! We tried to eat the meals and ultimately let them know we were not happy. I WISH I COULD UNEAT THAT MEAL. I think about it and almost vomit. I don't know if they assume we were just tourists and could feed us crap, but no, we visit multiple times a year and have family that live nearby. And we ourselves live nearby. They gave us 2 free deserts (delicious) and 20% off... Still a waste of money- I would have rather gone to Bubba Gump Shrimp. And I am NOT that kind of diner. THUMBS DOWN!!! read more

My girlfriends took me here for my birthday breakfast before our hike. It was a beautiful crisp morning, but with the heat lamps on we were able to sit outside and enjoy the awesome view. Such a nice selection of items it was hard to choose. I ended up having eggs, chicken apple sausages, and potatoes. The portions were huge and I ate every bite! We got our entrees while we still had our appetizers. Price is really high. They charge for the view. As soon as you know that, you are ok. I'd give this place one star if it weren't for the view. Pacific's Edge is a rip-off of epic proportions. The menu is a ludicrous mix of dishes that don't go together save for the overpriced "chef's tasting menu" which is the only way to have a marginally cohesive meal. The meal starts with the chef sending out what I'm certain was Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup. It didn't stop with the food though. Either the sommelier really didn't like us or he had no idea what he was talking about. Topping that is the wine list being INSANELY expensive - this place doesn't do the usual double shelf price for a bottle, they quadruple or quintuple it. Like the menu, it's a mishmash of ill-fitting, unrecognizable wines which manage to be mediocre to poor and exorbitantly expensive. We had a New Zealand Shiraz, which is almost always a pleasant red, and it managed a bland palate and the most unpleasant aftertaste. I can go to Trader Joe's and get better wine for 1/50th of the price. Not that they're prone to the problems depicted in the movie, but I couldn't help but think of the restaurant in Fight Club. Ricky would have been the nice but hapless bread server, Tyler the chef and Tyler's boss as the sommelier. The similarities were as numerous as they were utterly strange. Anyway, I suppose it's easy to get sucked in once they bring you a $200 bottle of French Thunderbird, so do yourself a favor and have a drink at the bar instead. Skip the restaurant part. read more

Of course the food was wonderful. Although as a fan of eating, I'm used to larger portion sizes, but dinner with dessert was perfectly filling. For the price, I was really hoping to take a doggie bag home, and quickly realized this isn't the type of place to give doggie bags lol. One thing that struck us, is that they have very specific menu items, so substituting was not so easy and that's the only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5. My husband just wanted an easy salad with ranch, but they don't have ranch dressing. Another no-no for this posh place :) Make sure you RSVP in advance, I don't think they take walk-ins. We celebrated our anniversary, and they added the cutest touch to our desserts (see photos!) We'll definitely be back again next year! I'm giving this restaurant 5 stars due to a combination of things. First of all, the view alone puts this place in the 5 star bracket! Every table has an unobstructed, gorgeous view of the ocean. It's a floor to ceiling window, that you can't stop staring out of! Then there's the food... delicious! Tried the Caesar salad, steak, and cream brûlée, and all were perfect. Perfect to share. Lastly, the staff was great. Attentive, knowledgable, and they made you feel like royalty. What more could you ask for? It's hard to beat this kind of ambiance. The setting and service alone get you to four stars. The food, though not the finest I've ever had, is certainly high enough caliber to make this a destination restaurant. The restaurant is about four miles south of Carmel off Highway 1. Time your reservation so that you get to see the sunset. Although every seat is really nice, put in an early request for a window seat. It's just a tad nicer. The service is absolutely tops. Never invasive, but always there and attentive. They didn't even pause when I gave them my (now common) request for a blue cheese stuffed olive for my martini. Our waiter ASKED if we'd like to take some time between our appetizer and main course. How often does that happen?? Some food suggestions - Though everything was great, I though the abalone and was fantastic as were the short ribs. Two more bits of advice - Order off the wine list. The sommelier told me that Hyatt is trying to pare down this extensive list so there are many great deals here. Also, stay at the highlands inn! Then you can stumble back to your room after the blue cheese martini and wine. Go for another ocean side view. read more
