Horrible service took over an hour to serve our food than it was the wrong order. Do not recommend.

I'd give this place 3.5 stars. The service was really good, although I felt a bit rushed to order. It was however 8:55pm when I finally ordered. The signature dishes/recommendations were just "eh" such as the abalone and short ribs. The flavor pairings were a bit odd such as the abalone and sea bass dishes with red wine reduction. Red wine just doesn't seem to pair well with seafood, and it turned out to be be way too overpowering on the abalone I ordered. The abalone appetizer, which costed $30, was chewy and disappointing. I did however enjoy the lobster that I ordered as an entree. It was very rich, perhaps a bit too rich as all I could taste was butter on the lobster, in the sauce and in the potato risotto. I love butter, so I did enjoy it nonetheless. I figured I couldn't go wrong with something that is really quite simple to make. I also tried the scallops, and it came with foie gras on top, which again was an odd pairing for me. I like to be able to taste the star ingredient, and again the foie just overpowered the dayboat scallop. My husband's short rib was disappointing, as it tasted very common. However, I've never had short rib at a fancy restaurant that I liked. It just seems like a lesser cut of beef, and no one seems to make it better than Korean restaurants do. The foie gras that my husband ordered though was absolutely delicious! It came with a side of what tasted like cherry jam and toast, and it was very nicely seared. We had a very nice table with a "view." Unfortunately, there was so much fog we couldn't see a thing. Perhaps it is better during the day or at sunset during the foggy season. Overall, the dishes were hit or miss and then quite expensive. My husband was trying to take me to a nice place with a view, but unfortunately it was too foggy to see. With this restaurant, that's what you're really paying a premium for - the view. It's nice to have tried it, but for the price I'd recommend Marinus in Carmel. Great food, great service and the best views of the ocean from most of the Carmel area. I highly recommened this place to get away from the crowds and enjoy the most relaxing lunch or breakfast around. We had a table in the corner right by the windows so the view was magnificent. There really aren't many options for vegetarians but I had a mushroom ravioli with spinach dish that was amazing. Not too rich...pasta was cooked to perfection. Sometimes a ravioli's edges can be a little hard...these were beautiful clouds that melted in my mouth. read more

Came for brunch on Saturday and it was pretty empty so we got a prime seat by the windows with a fantastic view. The food came out promptly and we were impressed with the portion size and overall quality. It's not amazing but it's good, and the prices are quite fair for the service, location, and of course view. I would definitely come back and probably stick with my hamburger which was solid. My sister-in-law's seafood stew was full of seafood fyi, so it seemed worth the price! Service was friendly and prompt as well. read more

This was the highlight of a weekend at the Highlands Inn. The food and drink was both excellent. My lamb was prepared perfectly and the brussel sprout salad was much better than it sounded. The one good thing about staying at Highlands Inn is we could toddled off back up all those stairs to our room in an food/alcohol induced haze. Service is smothering. Just a bit too over the top. I prefer not to have someone at my elbow throughout the entire meal. That took away from some of the ambiance. Be prepared to pay for an wonderful special occasion meal. This restaurant was exactly what we were looking for the first night of our stay at Tickle Pink. It's about 300 feet down the hill, the food was good and the drinks strong. We were seated promplty in a dining room reminiscent of 80's style ski resorts, lots of wood and fire place. Our server was great and really lead us through our choices with great recommendations! We started sharing the sea scallops which were divinely seated in a buerre blanc sauce, yummmy! There were only two but they were big, and just enough to satisfy us both. The wines by the glass menu was through and had many great selections, my date had a LARGE maguerita, which seemed daunting to me in its size, this is good no? Our main courses were not as good as the scallop, but were good nonetheless. I had the beef tenderloin which was cooked perfectly, I would only say that the potatoes below were a little bland. I would have preferred a little more red wine sauce. My date had the halibut special, which, from what i tasted was quite good. Note to the reader, this place isn't inexpensive, so be prepared for entrees that average $25/plate. All in all I am giving this place four stars for convenience to our Inn and because the food really was quite good. The service was GREAT, which also bumps up the rating. Amazing view on a Saturday in January where you could see a few whales coming up to the surface in the far distance. That was my first whale sighting in California. I recommend making reservations ahead of time and requesting outdoor and oceanview seating. I ordered a crabcake sandwich with a side of fries, it was almost 100% crab which is rare and it was tasty! For dessert I got a the chocolate mousse which was also good as well as a iced coffee. Parking is free for guests of the hotel and restaurant. read more

Quite simply the best meal I've ever had. Food, service and setting were all stunning. The menu was unique in that you choose 3, 4, or 5 small dishes. I understand the menu rotates frequently so I won't bother with too many details, but each course was outstanding. I highly recommend cocktails in the lounge at sunset. We had our free breakfast here. It was too cold to sit outside so we sat inside and enjoyed the view instead. The voucher was for a certain $ amount so we got to choose what we wanted vs typical buffet or continental breakfast so that was nice. I had the Yogurt Parfait with homemade granola and fresh berries and a side of egg. We got to relax and enjoy our breakfast. Gather round for the saga of the empty pepper grinder if you dare , my wife and I were staying next door at the Tickle Pink which was absolutely the epitome of what you want a Carmel by the sea hotel to be and we were only staying one night so we wanted to get as much in room time as we could. And Carmel is a bit of a drive away and I like my martinis with dinner so this was a safer option , so this was for dinner and we strolled in around 6:30 and got seated right away by a very nice receptionist and got our menus, now this place is expensive $40 + entree's we are from Sonoma County so I am used to fairly high prices and pretty good food also I am 63 years old so it does take me a while to adjust to modern prices when I remember $20 entree prices as being expensive. Ok so we order drinks from our waiter who I will call Freddy , we got the drinks in not too long of a wait then we ordered the wedge salad and my wife got the Steak and I got the duck. So we get the salad and it's very good nice blue cheese dressing and a little different from a lot of wedge salads I've had and I like ground pepper on my salad so I grind about three turns and it's out of pepper so I am looking for Freddy to help me with my personal pepper needs but suddenly my wife and I are transported to a alternate universe where we can't be seen by Freddy or any other waiter , we languished there for what seemed many lifetimes and then Freddy came by and I told him of our perils with the pepper grinder he simply took the grinder from the poor bastards table next to us without saying a word as I looked at our neighbors table sans pepper I noticed him with the salt shaker next to his ear trying to figure out how to get some much needed salt on his fries , so thinking victory was mine I started to grind my pepper only to find it to was sorely lacking in the pepper department, who's in charge of these f***ing salt and pepper shakers ? I angrily ask my wife I mean when you're paying that much for a meal the salt and pepper guy or gal should be in town , so we go back to the dead zone for about 45 minutes and he brings the entrees which are both very good but I tell him I am still pepper poor , he smiles a wistful smile and triumphantly hands me a full peppergrinder ! So food good , wait for food not so good , I think it's a roll of dice here , nice place to have dinner but be ready to have some cocktails while you wait . And bring your own pepper :) read more

Great view of the ocean and the hotel pool. Went there for lunch since we were staying in the hotel on the premises. I had the clam chowder, which was very different from the plain clam chowder that I was craving for that day. It was more like a herbed clam chowder. My hubby had the Fish tacos, the portion were big and it was also delicious (I had couple bites since I wasn't a fan of my soup). Overall good price for the area and pretty good food. Not many other options around that area. Service was good, not great. It could be due to the fact that it was very busy. I would definitely go back. read more

I'll keep this simple and short: +2: Gorgeous ocean view... very romantic ambiance +1: good (but not GREAT_) food. Had the brussel sprout salad (more raw than cooked, but light and tasty) and the mushroom bisque (creamy, not too salty). Lamb was perfectly cooked to medium, ravioli's were quite diappponting ($26 for 5 pieces = more than $5/piece!) and the pasta edges were a bit al dente. The dessert was a hazelnut/chocolate concoction with ice cream ( forgot the name of the dish... sorry)... pretty yummy, but not amazingly fancy +1: Good service -1: Pricey meal; two appetizers + 2 glasses of wine + 2 entrees + 1 dessert = $150 with tax and tip. I've been told Carmel has 3 things- beautiful views, $$$$, and elderly. This restaurant follows the same pattern. The views are gorgeous from the outside patio, however if not seated under one of the few umbrellas its almost impossible to avoid the hot sun overhead. The food was ok, but not worth the price. And the customers were diverse, but I feel like the restaurant is intended for older (60+) couples. Any resultant that serves condiments (in this case, Tabasco) in miniature, individually sealed bottles is meant for elderly folk. I'm not saying my experience here was bad, it was average. In hindsight, it's what I should expect from a Hyatt hotel restaurant. Just not for me. read more

Yay for the savior of Highlands Inn food and service wise! Breakfast - fabulous. Burger - Excellent!. Service - Tony is a champ, Shama a gem. Seems like all the waiters we talk to have been here for decades, which is a testament in itself. The view is all star which is to be expected but I would say even without it it's a restaurant worth enjoying. Also they use the word accouterments on their breakfast menu. YAS! Side note - looks like they're moving locations to make more room for outdoor view friendly meetings. Please don't change your menu or, well, anything else! Side side note - Carmel isn't cheap. Neither is this place. Par for the course though. Id like to add that Clint Eastwood lives around and the fact that his babe of a son could be spotted at any moment makes it all worth it. read more

Our family dined at Pacific's Edge for Thanksgiving dinner this evening. Amazing view, great ambiance, all at a beautiful hotel. We had a preset menu with great options so everyone was happy. The problem was the food and service. Two in our party selected a simple turkey dinner option, which came out cold and had to be sent back to be reheated. Overall the food was o.k. but nothing that would justify the price. The service started good but then became slow and inattentive. Having to chase down our server to request our check after a long wait was not a great way to end the evening. Just a warning that our experience, all be it on a holiday, in no way justified the cost. A side note, related to the holiday I am sure but a 20% service fee was added to the total bill including a couple bottles of wine and not just the food. read more

I'd give this place one star if it weren't for the view. Pacific's Edge is a rip-off of epic proportions. The menu is a ludicrous mix of dishes that don't go together save for the overpriced "chef's tasting menu" which is the only way to have a marginally cohesive meal. The meal starts with the chef sending out what I'm certain was Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup. It didn't stop with the food though. Either the sommelier really didn't like us or he had no idea what he was talking about. Topping that is the wine list being INSANELY expensive - this place doesn't do the usual double shelf price for a bottle, they quadruple or quintuple it. Like the menu, it's a mishmash of ill-fitting, unrecognizable wines which manage to be mediocre to poor and exorbitantly expensive. We had a New Zealand Shiraz, which is almost always a pleasant red, and it managed a bland palate and the most unpleasant aftertaste. I can go to Trader Joe's and get better wine for 1/50th of the price. Not that they're prone to the problems depicted in the movie, but I couldn't help but think of the restaurant in Fight Club. Ricky would have been the nice but hapless bread server, Tyler the chef and Tyler's boss as the sommelier. The similarities were as numerous as they were utterly strange. Anyway, I suppose it's easy to get sucked in once they bring you a $200 bottle of French Thunderbird, so do yourself a favor and have a drink at the bar instead. Skip the restaurant part. read more

Of course the food was wonderful. Although as a fan of eating, I'm used to larger portion sizes, but dinner with dessert was perfectly filling. For the price, I was really hoping to take a doggie bag home, and quickly realized this isn't the type of place to give doggie bags lol. One thing that struck us, is that they have very specific menu items, so substituting was not so easy and that's the only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5. My husband just wanted an easy salad with ranch, but they don't have ranch dressing. Another no-no for this posh place :) Make sure you RSVP in advance, I don't think they take walk-ins. We celebrated our anniversary, and they added the cutest touch to our desserts (see photos!) We'll definitely be back again next year! I'm giving this restaurant 5 stars due to a combination of things. First of all, the view alone puts this place in the 5 star bracket! Every table has an unobstructed, gorgeous view of the ocean. It's a floor to ceiling window, that you can't stop staring out of! Then there's the food... delicious! Tried the Caesar salad, steak, and cream brûlée, and all were perfect. Perfect to share. Lastly, the staff was great. Attentive, knowledgable, and they made you feel like royalty. What more could you ask for? We came here twice during our Labor Day weekend stay at Hyatt Carmel. Both times the food was delicious, and the view..omg, the view is breathtaking !! Hubby and I ordered the short ribs and seabass the first time. Both was great but my seabass was BOMB. The sauce had a coconut taste kinda like a Thai fusion spin on the dish! So yummy! And we ordered the chocolate croissant bread pudding for dessert which was solid as well! The second time we brought our family, and we tried the salmon and scallops. They were good but I don't think it's as good as the seabass and short ribs. And definitely try going a little before sunset so you can view the sunset from your seat! You can't beat the view here! Even though it's not the best breakfast in Carmel, my husband and I still dine here for breakfast once a year on our annual trip to the Highlands Inn. It's still an enjoyable breakfast and we'll continue to come back. If you're looking for purely great food, I think there are better options in Carmel. It's hard to beat this kind of ambiance. The setting and service alone get you to four stars. The food, though not the finest I've ever had, is certainly high enough caliber to make this a destination restaurant. The restaurant is about four miles south of Carmel off Highway 1. Time your reservation so that you get to see the sunset. Although every seat is really nice, put in an early request for a window seat. It's just a tad nicer. The service is absolutely tops. Never invasive, but always there and attentive. They didn't even pause when I gave them my (now common) request for a blue cheese stuffed olive for my martini. Our waiter ASKED if we'd like to take some time between our appetizer and main course. How often does that happen?? Some food suggestions - Though everything was great, I though the abalone and was fantastic as were the short ribs. Two more bits of advice - Order off the wine list. The sommelier told me that Hyatt is trying to pare down this extensive list so there are many great deals here. Also, stay at the highlands inn! Then you can stumble back to your room after the blue cheese martini and wine. Go for another ocean side view. read more

We love the Pacific Highlands Inn, but the main restaurant is no longer open for lunch. The default restaurant for lunch is the California Market. The menu looks good. The setting is rustic with both seating inside and outside (heat lamps) with a specular view of a little bay between Point Lobos and Yankee Point (overlooking several zillion dollar homes, including Lana Turner's). The pricing for food and beverage seems high, but one is really paying for the view. The meal portions and wine pours range from small to medium. The service is average. First off, the view is amazing. Well, I assume it's amazing since we arrived a little after the sun had already set. We could still see the waves crashing on the beach. They have giant bay windows overlooking the ocean. I imagine the view is spectacular in the spring or summer. The restaurant is flawless. The tables are nicely separated so that you don't feel like you are having dinner with strangers. In the bay area, this seems to always be an issue in intimate restaurants. I know, the bay is limited on space but it can get very annoying. The staff is extremely friendly. The manager came to our table and personally made sure we were enjoying our meal. I had alerted them beforehand that it was my girlfriend's birthday, so the manager personally wrote a thank you card for choosing to dine at their establishment and wished her a happy birthday. Our plates were amazing. My girlfriend had the Pan Seared California Snapper and it was very tasty. I had the Herb Roasted Free Range Chicken with mashed potatoes. The chicken was cooked perfectly! The dessert, Valrhona Chocolate Peanut Butter Torte, was very rich and savory. It didn't last long!!! I would highly recommend this place for a romantic dinner. If you can catch sunset, even better! The only negative comment I have about this place was the temperature. It was freezing inside! If you get cold easy, you may want to request to be seated closer to the fireplace. read more

This is a review for the Sunset Lounge. We had heard about the impressive views at this property so we ventured up after hiking around Point Lobos just down the road. The property itself is up the cliff just off Highway 1 and consists of several buildings that look like condos. In the main building you'll find the bar/lounge area just off the lobby. We were in sneakers are being at Point Lobos so we were concerned with being under dressed but it was fine for the bar. We ordered a couple of drinks and decided to try the cheese plate which was a good appetizer and fairly priced at $15. We thought about staying for dinner but Pacific's Edge is pricey and we wanted something a bit more low key. The views from the lounge itself are stellar. You look out over the ocean and Point Lobos. Unfortunately we got there just after sunset so we only had a few minutes of great views. If you go make sure to get there for sunset and it will definitely enhance your experience. read more

Quite possibly one of my all-time favorite restaurants. The view was amazing. The layout of the restaurant wisely took advantage of the breath-taking view. Had red wine (can't remember the details) and it was super good. The rib-eye was the best rib-eye I've ever had as the flavor was amazing and it was cooked to perfection. Appetizers and desserts were a wonderful way to begin and end the meal. Bread was fantastic too. Service was top-notch. Entire staff made my boyfriend and me feel like royalty. We have tried a variety of the breakfast / lunch options offered on their menu and I must say we have never been disappointed. You must try the Zucchini & Cheese Frittata, it is AMAZING.
