Although the setting was beautiful and our waiter, Tony L. couldn't have been any better, the food (although looked delicious) was disappointing. The coffee wasn't anything special and the dishes lacked any substantial flavors. The corned beef hash did have the right amount of saltiness to it, but the meat was overcooked and chopped to a point of being like stubble, if that makes any sense. The toast was soggy and the potatoes were a weird texture and flavor. Luckily Tony made the experience good enough for us to go back next time we vacation at the Highlands Inn. read more

My wife, son and I have been coming to Hyatt Carmel's Pacific's Edge Restaurant for many years now. It is a beautiful restaurant with incredible views of the ocean and cliffs, friendly staff and normally, amazing food. However, they recently changed their executive chef about 3-4 months ago though and it shows. We used to love the food here; but now, there just isn't that "wow factor" and several of the dishes we ordered either lacked seasoning or balance. We started with the sautéed abalone with grilled trumpet mushroom, which was incredible and delicate. The octopus was very tasty, soft inside and crispy outside, but it's accompanying fried potato needed more seasoning and the balsamic vinaigrette was uninspired. Their former rendition of olive-oil poached octopus and then grilled was much better. My wife had the California salad which had mixed greens, plums, carrot and radish slices with a wonderful and generous serving of Humboldt fog cheese. The salad was refreshing but the honey vinaigrette was cloyingly sweet. I had the heirloom tomato salad with a cashew soft cheese, basil blossoms and basil infused oil but the tomato did not have enough acidity to balance the richness of cashew cheese. For the entrée, my wife had the pan-fried sea scallops with mustard seeds and roasted red vegetable puree (carrot, bell pepper and tomato?). The scallops were cooked to perfection wit a nice sear. I had the Chilean sea bass, which was simply seasoned with salt and pepper and pan-fried. It was accompanied by corn and coconut chowder sauce (very bland) with a tomato-leek confit (did not add anything to the dish) with lemon-grass oil (that tasted more like a basil-infused oil) and well-seasoned grilled summer squash. The sea bass was excellent but the accompanying sauce was under-seasoned with undeveloped flavors that seemed to stop in medias res. My son had the hand-made pasta with butter and parmesan cheese, which both my wife and I loved, but our son did not. However, the restaurant redeemed itself by serving a wonderful chicken strips with fries, that my son loved. For dessert, we had the chocolate croissant bread pudding, which we always love. Sweet, creamy well-balanced with crunchy and salty elements and a caramel ice cream. We also tried the chocolate hazelnut tart with burnt marshmallow and a hazelnut graham cracker crust, with a berry gelato. The dessert was way too sweet, the crust was pasty and hazelnut bits did not even add any crunch, and I could not even taste the chocolate, being overpowered by the sweetness and the hazelnut. Overall, this restaurant has incredible ambiance and views with very attentive staff. However, the flavors now are nowhere near where it used to be. read more

It is my family's first time dining in this place and unknowingly, it is within the Hyatt Residences and my family's first choice of hotel is always Hyatt. Upon arriving, a host has callled and notified the location of my table and that it is ready upon arrival. We were greeted by amazing valet staff, entered the restaurant and directed to our table while others use the restroom after a long drive. As we walked to our table, grabbed the menu and looking around the scenery, a server "SNAPPED" the menu off my mom's hands and said "oh dont touch that, its for a reservation" and we were surprised and embarassed as there were other guests in the patio. i stood by next to my mom and let the staff know that we are the reserved guests for that table. Yes the staff looks surprised by what I just confirmed. Just because we were wearing joggers, shorts and sweater.... DO NOT JUDGE THE BOOK BY ITS COVER! The person you snapped a menu off her hands is my mom who is a CEO of medical company. The rest of my party finally arrived at the table, and we had our lunch, and went on with our day. We had the fish tacos, seared halibut sandwich and clam chowder. it was BOMBBB but i don't think any of the other guests would describe it as so.. After being seated, the 4 of us waited through about 15 minutes of waiters and bus boys walking around us to stop one of them to ask for a waiter. I mean, no greeting, no welcoming, no specials. Nothing. I was shocked. We had to practically wave our arms around to get some attention. They were not busy either, 6 maybe 7 tables. 3 waiters. It almost felt intentional. Worst part was we were there to celebrate something great and it just put a cramp in the evening. After eating, we were just sitting waiting for a desert menu or something. Had to ask for it. They eventually cleared the table. We realized our potential mistake and said "F this place" and got desert elsewhere. That is, after 15 or so min, then flagging down a waiter to get a check. Stayed at the Hyatt for 2 nights for a birthday celebration (already reviewed the Hyatt)). We chose this Resturaunt for the birthday meal and were not disappointed. After a less that great experience the night before at the Mission Ranch (see review), the staff here pulled out all the stops. My husband had told the manager about our MR experience bcz he referred us, so I hope the amazing service is their standard, not a result of our previous experience. In any event, it was wonderful. My husband had pre-ordered appetizers that arrived almost immediately. Oysters and soft-shelled crab-amazing. We brought a magnum of our own wine, bought wine and champagne and gave the manager and sommelier samples of our wine. The usual fee of 45$/bottle was waived! Our party of 6 all ordered different meals, and everyone was very happy with their selections. I ordered the tomato salad and cerviche, my husband had the rack of lamb and beet salad. With a party of 6, they did add in the tip. Because we were staying there, and listened to a brief (10 minute)spiel asking if we would even be interested in the full 90 minute time share talk (we declined), we received 10% off all our food for the stay. The view is breath taking. We sat in front of the window and arrived before sunset. It was a very special evening all around, and we will be back. read more

Awe stayed at the hotel for two nights and had breakfast both days at the California Marketplace. The view is great with both outside seating (very pleasant and awesome panoramic view on a good weather day). We didn't get the outside table when we arrive at 10:30 on a Sunday morning. They told us reservation is recommended for busy weekends. We got an indoor table still with a gorgeous view of the ocean. So now to why it only gets 2 stars. The food is decent; I expected to pay a bit more for the food since its inside a 5 star hotel with a gorgeous view. However what bothered me was the service. You would expect better service at a place like this. The server weren't very attentive. We asked for booster it never came. We had to ask for share plates (since we had toddler and we were sharing several entrees and side since there was no kids menu) We had to try really hard to get her attention. She would start walking away even before we finish telling her things. We had her as our server both days. I thought to myself that maybe she had a bad day and tried not to let it bother me the first day we are there. I still gave a close to 20 percent tip even though I wasn't very pleased with the service. However same thing happened the second day when we went back for breakfast again. She smiled a bit initially. But again not very attentive service. We had to ask another person to try to get her to come when we found there was hair in our food. She came and said along the line of "oh there is hair. Do you want them to remake it? " My husband said no and I was debating and said yeah?" And before we were able to tell her what we agreed on she walked away on us again. Sigh... When another person brought out the plate and neither me or my husband really want to eat it anymore as the thought of the food having hair was bad. The person was surprised by our hesitance as she didn't know about the hair issue. We ended up keeping the food as I didn't want it to go to waste. Our originally server never came back to check on us after either. To the bright side, they have binoculars on the table and in the room as its whale season and whales are often spotted. We were lucky we did see a few whales coming up for air so that helped to divert our attention a bit. Overall I just wished the service was better. It would have been perfect. :( read more

On a tip, we stopped at the California Market Restaurant for breakfast during our recent Hwy 1 road trip. We didn't know what to expect, but once we turned on to Highland Dr. we knew this place would be good. The food was good, but the panoramic views of the Big Sur coastline were amazing. The atmosphere was quiet and peaceful, with patio heaters to keep you warm and soft music in the background. We were lucky enough to see a pod of humpback whales playing just outside the reefs, which added to the splendor of this great breakfast spot. Some of the reviews had warned about the food, but we found it to be just as good if not better than other hotel attached restaurants. But what truly makes this place worth stopping at is the atmosphere and the views. read more

If you have any special dietary needs the buffet is probably not the way to go. I called and spoke to reservation staff on 3 different occasions in the months before our visit. They assured me that the chefs knew how to cook using better ingredients. I am gluten sensitive and avoid soy. I was a fool to think that just because we were in California at an "upscale" restaurant that the chefs would make any effort to use less gluten and non gmo ingredients. There are alternative thickening agents for sauces and gravies but they obviously didn't use them as I reacted. The reservation people are obviously clueless as to how they do things in the kitchen. They said the chef would be available to ask questions to. Not really. I started with some yummy spinach salad with lots of fresh fruit. There were three salad dressings to choose from and I asked the person behind the buffet table if there was soy in the dressings. He came back a couple of minutes later and said "Yes there was soy in them." And promptly turned away to do something else. Perhaps he thought I wanted soy? That is when we should have left. But it was Christmas after all and we needed to eat. I was not a happy camper so after a couple of minutes I asked the same person to please bring me some olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Which he did. After that I didn't ask anymore of him. The food was seasoned well with fresh herbs and delicious but not covered and barely warm. I had the fish with rice, duck confit, and prime rib. The Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes were great. When I asked the waiter if there were any breads or deserts that were gluten free he assured me no and brought me a large bowl of three different sorbets with fresh fruit. It was wonderful as was the view. We would not have eaten here had the reservation staff been better trained in answering my concerns when I called. Great things: Free parking, Beautiful view and Casual (no need for any fancy ties or pumps) the quality of food and ingredients are good however the dinner rolls they bring out before your meal were a little hard and the butter seemed to come straight out of the fridge so obviously that marriage of deliciousness was doomed from the get-go. My husband ordered the burger- I had a bite, that was delish. a good amount of meat. well cooked and seasoned. yum. I asked for my Turkey sandwich without cheese. they messed that up which is forgivable but the service was a little slow for a $40 lunch for two. Not a must if in the Carmel area - if your time is short like ours was, I would recommend hitting up a local dine-in for a quick, good bite and spending the rest of your time at the beach / 17mi drive. read more

Of course, we come here for the views, not exactly the food. We are actually quite disappointed with the food quality since our food was luke warm and not hot. That's a real bummer. I did not like my steak since it tasted like a steak you can order from Denny's. The food is on the "expensive" side, and for the price paid, you will get super disappointed if you come here to eat, and eat only! Please do keep this in mind. Just for the VIEW. Me and my wife don't eat pork and the chefs tasting menu which was recommended had pork so we decided to choose our own meals. No biggie THE FOOD: The pea soup. YUCK. Taste was bland. Way to thin. Lamb shanks were OK. For the price, I got just about 5 bites. The best tasting meal that I had were the French fries. THE SERVICE: The only pleasant person whom I encountered was the individual with whom I made reservations and showed us to our tables (don't remember the name unfortunately). The waiter was arrogant, rude, and whenever I asked any questions he felt as if he did not have to answer them and kept sighing in between. I asked him with the papas Fritos were as I didn't not know and he answered with a smug smirk. Unfortunately I don't remember his name but he was an elderly man with white hair. He took so long to check with us when we needed refills and such I had to pull another waiter who was very pleasant and nice when asked. THE VIEW: We came during the sunset and it was magical. The waves splashing against the rocks with the orange sunset in the back; amazing. For the price I paid I expected A LOT more. Maybe he was having a bad day? Well, it ruined ours. Our server was Fredric from France. He was so amazing. The four of us decided to go with the chef's choice 3 course meal. We had the tuna tartare, abalone, and the Kansas City. Plus, we all had 4 separate desserts. The food was mouth popping! Everything was very fresh. Best tuna we've ever had. Our server paired each meal with a wine of his choice. He knew exactly how to pair. We could not have asked for a better wine with each meal. If you've never been to Pacific's Edge you simply must come. My wife and I were here for our 10 year anniversary 11 years ago and it was the best meal we ever had up to that point. The food is pricey here so come prepared to spend about $300 per couple. I assure you though, it is worth every cent. I would gladly pay for that quality food again. Thank you Pacific's Edge! You truly are a classy restaurant. Did I mention the view? Great view! Especially check out sunset! Wine menu cannot be beat! We've been here 3 times so far...each to celebrate an event (anniversary). Did the tasting menu the first time with wine pairing and it was phenomenal. The bread is to die for! Different servers take care of different things (bread, drinks, etc) so you constantly have your ever need attended to. The tasting menus change and so it's sometimes hit or miss depending on your taste....my wife always gets the steak and she loves it. Fantastic desert menu. Haven't tried anything from the cheese menu but that's next on my list for next time! If you can, get a reservation for sunset and just enjoy the view! read more

We had the pleasure of dining at Pacific's Edge for the first time recently and I must say, it was the best meal we have had on the Monterey Peninsula. We have eaten at the casual restaurant at the Highlands Inn many times and the food has always been great, but the Pacific's Edge Restaurant is at another level. The view of the Pacific Ocean from the restaurant is the best in the area. The service was excellent and the food was impeccable. Jacques, the Manager of the restaurant, was friendly and welcoming. The hostess made us feel very special. We met the chef whose resume' is impressive and it was evident that he puts great thought in to every meal. The sommelier is extremely knowledgeable and we took his recommendation for our wine selection and are so happy we did. There were four of us dining and we shared samples of our food with each other and all entrées and deserts were excellent. This restaurant is a gem among restaurants in this area. We just returned from Kauai and while there ate at the St. Regis Hotel in Princeville the week before dining at the Pacific's Edge and although the view was great there too, the food did not compare. Sometimes the best choice is in your own back yard and you just need to experience it! read more

We stayed at this hotel for the Labor Day weekend and ate breakfast here two mornings. It's definitely what you would expect at a nice hotel breakfast restaurant. The service was great, and the food was delicious. We got the Point Lobos Benedict (with Dungeness Crab) and the Californian Benedict (with Avocado and Artichoke). Both were great! The poached eggs were cooked perfectly and the hollandaise sauce was smooth, not chunky. I personally like mine with a bit more lemon flavor but overall a great meal. It is on the pricey side but that can be expected based on the location/views. We got coffee, orange juice, and two entrees and before tip our bull was about $50. Overall I would come back for sure, you can't beat the view! read more

It was telling that in this day of great informality that they indicated a dress code - no jean's, no tennis shoes - you know, keep your Saturday morning yard wear at home - show some pride for chrissakes - after all, you're not getting out of this establishment for less than 75 bucks a head, wine excluded. Well, we are seated and immediately across the way is Jethro wearing JORTS, tube socks and - tennis shoes. The missus is wearing a Niners Jersey. Clearly their dress code isnt enforced - hmmm, where else are they lowering the standard? So the server comes over and lists 5 items from 12 item menu that are unavailable - INCLUDING SHELLFISH - IN MONTEREY???? Really? We didnt stick around to be further underwhelmed by the experience. And by the way, the place is very noisy so crank up the hearing aid if you plan to hang in there. read more
