The food might be fantastic, but we will never know. My husband and I arrived at the restaurant at 9:12 pm on a Saturday night. BIG HUGE SIGN on the front door says MONDAY - SATURDAY - OPEN UNTIL 9:30 pm. As I reached for the door handle, a guy runs to the door, turns the lights off and locks the door in my face. I can't believe that just happened. I'm in my 60's and I've never had that happen in my life. Through the door glass, I show him my phone (time) and he yells through the door "we're closed". I point out it's only 9:12 and suddenly the staff (4-5) people that were standing around the front start yelling "we close", "we close" at 9:00. I showed them the sign and the answer I got was ... QUOTE ... "it doesn't matter what the sign says, we close at 9:00 pm". Oh, ok. Your sign means nothing. I guess they just close whenever they are ready to leave. Please note the hours on the sign. And notice the photo of the sign says "UPDATED HOURS" - Go figure! As we were walking away to get in our car, the crabby owner (I assume) sees me taking a photo of her sign on the door and goes bonkers. She comes running outside screaming at me to "go away". Go away!! We closed!! We closed!! Seriously? Why would you come outside and accost people in the parking lot? Why???? Because she knew she was busted and she knew I wasn't happy and she knew this review was coming. The whole incident was bizarre. Anyway!! For whatever it's worth, I swear every word of this review is true. If you have an 'established relationship' with this restaurant they might treat you differently, but this is how we were treated on our first visit on a Saturday night. A couple in their 60s. Extremely disrespectful. I honestly don't understand how places like this stay in business. Clearly they must have good food because they do have good reviews, but we will never come back. My husband lived in Thailand for several years and this is just how they roll. Apparently it's part of the culture. They only care about today. Never think about tomorrow. It's definitely not part of the culture that we enjoyed. This was our first time stopping here. We had been wanting to try this place for a while. I came here for the first time a couple weeks ago and i'm still thinking about my meal. I can confidently say i've not had better thai food before in my life. I've never cooked this kind of food before so i don't know what they're doing better than the others but i'm going with fresher ingredients and better cooks. I got the Lemongrass stir fry and the highlight for me was my mushrooms were not soggy or mushy, they had fully absorbed all the flavor and became the best mushroom a mushroom could be. The food here is pretty good, I will say "you just have to KNOW WHAT to ORDER" I'm a fan of their salt & pepper seafood (lobster, shrimp & mussel) it's a little high for the portion size, but you should definitely try it. Everyone loves the oysters here too. Their chicken wings are the best (jalepeno & dynamite) The papaya salad & steak salad is always consistently good. I'm not a huge fan of their noodle dishes because there's more bean sprouts than noodles. The fried rice isn't a favorite either because it's real wet and was on the bland side. One of the biggest downfalls is probably the size of the restaurant-it's tiny. So you either have to go right when they open for dinner or just with one other person. The food here is always amazing and the staff is extremely attentive. For me, consistency means so much in the service industry. If you come to Pad Thai Cafe, you must try my favorite... Seafood Monster which is a mixture of lobster, shrimp, scallop, and mussels flash fried with jalapeños and onions! It is phenomenal! The seafood is succulent and lightly battered to perfection. Nothing is worse that biting into an inch of salty batter only to taste a piece of over-cooked seafood. Their preparation of this dish is very impressive. In the same fashion as the "Monster" you also have options for wings and soft shell crab which are both equally satisfying depending on your craving. Other notable dishes include the Mee Krob, Yum Salads (beef or seafood), pad Thai, Drunken Noodles, and their mouth-watering spin on a simple, noodle classic... Lo Mein! Oh, crap! Let me not forget my other fave... the oysters! For a lot of people, quality, fresh oysters in the half-shell are questionable for Tennessee.
