I purchased a Groupon for 2 two-hour rentals from Paddle Surf LA and sadly, it was a terrible experience. I purchased from this company because the Groupon said that the paddeboarding would take place in Marina Del Rey. I am a SUP (stand up paddle boarding) beginner. The first time I tried to go SUP I unknowingly booked it for a location in the open water, and the waves were huge! I couldn't even get on my knees on the board because the waves kept pushing me off. So I vowed next time to do it right, in a nice calm location like the Marina. Paddle Surf LA's Groupon proclaimed, "Learn how to navigate the waters of Marina Del Rey while paddling sturdy longboards." Great!, I thought. The nice calm waters of MDR...without those big, open-ocean waves I'll finally be able to SUP for real! But alas... I had first made a reservation to go in August. I called and gave my Groupon confirmation code ahead of time. When the day came, it was overcast and rainy and we decided to postpone after the incidents with lightning strikes at the beach. So finally my friend and I were free yesterday, a Sunday, and I recruited two more friends to buy the Groupon and join us. Again I made a reservation ahead of time for the 4 of us. As we followed the directions, they led us not to Marina Del Rey but to...Santa Monica Beach? What the heck? Well, when we first got there at 11:30 am my friend, who is an experienced SUP-er, said the waves looked on the small side and we might be okay after all. So we decided to give it a shot, paid for all-day parking and headed over the the little white van that housed Paddle Board LA. So my two friends gave their confirmation codes and when it came time for mine, I could only find one code. Now, I KNOW I purchased two codes and I told the PBLA girl so, and even pulled out my email confirmation saying I had bought two Groupons. I explained the situation and that we had tried to go months ago but never did and I never used one of the Groupons. BUT SHE WAS HAVING NONE OF IT. "There's nothing I can do...there's nothing I can do." I can't even tell you how many times she repeated that to us. I told her that perhaps the last time we tried to make a reservation and I gave my confirmation code, maybe they had marked it as redeemed (which is a crappy thing to do) and if she would please just honor the voucher. She kept resisting! I was almost in tears at that point...it was about 45 minutes after we arrived and we were still arguing about something that HER COMPANY made the mistake on, and she wouldn't even budge. Apparently that other reviewer had someone who "honored the price of the Groupon without actually purchasing the Groupon" well, hey, lucky you. I felt terrible that I had invited my other friends to go and we had to deal with this. Finally the girl checked the schedule for when my other Groupon was redeemed and admitted "maybe" they had accidentally redeemed it. So she grudgingly got out our boards and paddles. It was about an hour after we arrived. As we headed to the water, the waves had clearly gotten much bigger in size and the wind had picked up. We tried to salvage the day and paddled out there, but, 3 of us being beginners, we couldn't even make it past the waves. AGAIN. After 30 minutes of useless attempts and waves repeatedly pushing us off our boards, we gave up and returned the equipment. I told the girl that I had specifically bought that Groupon because it said it was in MDR where there were no waves. "Oh, we only do rentals at MDR on weekdays," she said. WHAT?! I am looking at the Groupon page right now and NO WHERE does it say that they are in SM on weekends and only at MDR on weekdays. This company is a sham. Stay away. read more

I purchased a Groupon for a board rental in the Marina. Everyone I interacted with was very friendly and super accommodating. The board was sturdy and they even give you a little lesson on how to get around. The parking was convenient as it was across the street and reasonably priced. After two weeks of calling, emailing and even showing up in person the woman refused to accommodate us without a reservation made at least 24 hours in advance. How can we make a reservation if we are unable to contact you? Spoiler alert! She was willing to accommodate us if we paid the day of out of pocket and used the Groupon another day. So you have the resources, yet you still refuse to accommodate our Groupon? (Also the groupon deal was a difference of a couple dollars) Ultimately received a refund from Groupon after a very frustrating experience. Save yourself the hassle and poor customer service-- go to the guys in the blue tent next door! They are kind, quick and accommodating! read more

Paddle Surf LA has great customer service! I got a groupon online and easily booked with them over the phone. When we got there, they had everything ready for us. They even gave us a call when we were running late. Unfortunately half our party couldn't make it due to unlimited mimosas right before and the other half who did make it kept falling over or crashing their boards into the rocks, but the staff there were really nice and understanding when we explained to them our situation. Overall, the beach area was nice and calm and easy to navigate and the staff is super friendly and they have a tent where you can leave your stuff as well. read more

I've only had one experience with Paddle Surf LA but it was all I could ask for. Their business plan is a little different as they don't have a store on the beach but meet you there with the gear you requested. I had reserved 2 standup paddle boards for 2:00 pm but when I realized we wouldn't make it by 2, I called and they rescheduled for me, no problem. When we met at the beach, another one of our group decided they wanted to paddle too. Rent another board? No problem pulled another one out of the truck. I would rate Paddle Surf LA as excellent. I was able to make a reservation within 24 hours and they accommodated my schedule. My instructor Nicole was waiting for me as promised and I arrived early. She was pleasant and experienced and got right down to business. I was able to stand upon my first try and although I fell in the water 3X that was me pushing myself. Nicole's little suggestions like hand and finger placement when standing and "holding of the paddle" for body-balance were extremely helpful. This was my first time stand-up paddling and I'm scheduled for my next outing real soon - Nicole helped build my confidence. I would recommend PSLA highly. My goal is to SUP in the ocean east of the waves and I'm on the right track. I'm 66 years of age and I'm still trying to do new and different activities in my life. The activity was well paced to where it was fun but didn't leave you completely exhausted. Additionally, we saw a sea lion and some dolphins in the marina, which made it a perfect day. My friend and I both got groupons so the way could go paddle surfing together for the first time! When we first called they told us we couldn't use the Groupon together and had to go separately. Needless to say we were pissed! Her reservation was at 12, mine at 1 so we decided to have her pick up her board and just hangout until 1 so we'd go out together. I recently found a Groupon deal for paddleboarding lessons and thought, why the heck not. My friend's birthday was also around the corner so it was a perfect opportunity to try this thing out. Our instructor Curtis was incredibly friendly. His easygoing personality made it easy to ask questions and not get too flustered when I was having difficulty on the board. He also made sure we were taking breaks (paddleboarding is surprisingly tiring, especially on the feet) during the 2 hours we were out in the water. I made my appointment via phone, and if you have a Groupon code, they will ask you for the voucher number. I received a text the day before the appointment date and it provided all the information on where to park, where to meet the instructors, etc. If you're meeting in the Marina del Rey location, there is a hotel called the Jamaican Bay Inn where you can "borrow" their restroom to change. Supposedly they also have a good happy hour according to Curtis :) Overall great first-time experience; thank you Paddle Surf LA! read more

I had such a wonderful experience unexpectedly working with the owner the other day... She and her colleague were very kind and giving of their time when I was in need of assembling my brand new paddle board. They assisted me with the proper installation and lent me tools. They are very helpful and friendly - plus they have a most professional SUP business. Best prices and service at Mother's Beach. It turns out that two summers ago I rented my SUP from them on a weekly basis. I was brand new to the sport and they assisted me with a lesson and rental gear. Initially I found Paddle Surf LA through a Groupon.... but after the Groupon expired I continued to use this company for the next two summers. Ultimately I fell in love with the sport and decided to buy my own brand new SUP. However, I will continue to rent from Paddle Surf LA for my husband and friends. They are reliable and efficient and they have great prices and great service. They carry the board to the water's edge and set you up. They are generous with their time. Once you book, don't expect to hear from them again. I had scheduled a private lesson for a work associate that was coming in from Europe and wanted to show her a Cali experience. Price wasn't a factor - it was $240 for 90 min. I should gone somewhere else right away -- to book after calling and emailing many times with no response someone finally got back to me, and I booked with them. I had to follow up with them 4 times to find out where to meet. Once we met, it was *fine* - nothing special but fine. I didn't take any pictures because the private instructor told us she was taking them. 3 weeks later, I never got the pictures!! I emailed, texted and called but no response. I have a customer in Europe that I wanted to impress and she keeps asking and Paddle Surf hasn't responded at all!!!! I'd love to post a pic, but I have none!!! read more

Super friendly, picked up the phone when I called (some surf schools are hard to get a hold of!). I made a reservation the same day merely two hours before and we showed up at marina del Rey and paddle boarded for 2 hrs! It was great! They honored the price of the group on deal without actually purchasing the group on which was nice, I didn't really feel like having to download vouchers etc when I was on the go and just wanted to paddle board! I went from never having done this before to cruising along on my own and loving every second. We saw a seal and a little ray while we were out. My boyfriend and I bought a paddle board lesson on groupon the morning of at 8 am on a saturday, contacted them right away, and secured a lesson time at 11 am. I really appreciate that the process was so easy and simple, and did not have to stress about every class being booked (like other places). Andy was a great trainer, he was so friendly. He gave us a paddleboard 101 on land, taught us proper positioning (kneeling/standing), etiquette in the water, and different paddling techniques. Literally the worst company ever. First of all, they run out of a smart car. They don't have a company base or anything. It's just a couple who own a bunch of paddle boards and rent them out. Me and my friends all bought groupons online for my birthday and the first thing was we spent 2 hours looking for Paddle Surf LA. We couldn't find them at all because there is no signage or anything. However, the rest of the Paddle Boarding Companies are very easy and accessible. Finally, we found them but then they told us we had to make reservations 48 hours in advance. Whereas all of the other places are just walk up and Paddle Board. We were frustrated, but it was fine. A WEEK LATER we tried to make reservations and they informed us that we could only use one groupon per visit per group. So 5 of us bought the groupon and only one of us could use it. Meaning, we would have to come back separately and go Paddle Boarding alone or we would all have to come back 5 times to make use of our groupons, which were non-refundable. The dumbest business plan ever. There was nothing they could do, but entice us to come back 5 more times. I was just trying to rent a paddle board for my birthday and this became a loss of $150 to my group of friends, a ruined 22nd Birthday for me, and a major disappointment. I was literally in tears by the end of this whole debacle because I wanted so badly to show my friends how fun Paddle Boarding could be, but after sinking in so much money and time already, it just seemed like a waste. Please don't go here. There are 4-5 other paddle boarding places that make it way easier and relaxed whereas this was the most stressful and complex thing and has honestly turned me off from Paddle Boarding for awhile. Take the easy route, I beg you. These people just want your money and are writing the rules as they go along. We ended up never going because who wants to go Paddle Boarding alone? Not to mention, Marina Del Rey is the 2nd worst water rating in all of SoCal! Look it up! I booked through Groupon and it was a mistake that will never be repeated. Unclear fine print resulted in impossible bookings for more than 1 person and what is the point of offering more than one discounted rental? Stephanie was not only rude and would NOT book reservations when even separate Groupon vouchers with different Groupon accounts were purchased for more than 1 person, which is not only a breach of their offer through Groupon but is it an illegal business practice. I have mix feelings about this, thus I'll share my experience: I've discovered this via Groupon. The first time I came, I've booked a lesson through Groupon, when I got there I was told I booked a two hour paddle board, which I was confused, since I've specifically told them what I've brought on Groupon and provided the Groupon #. Anyways, I didn't think much and went out on my own anyways. The gentleman that helped me was very nice and patient enough to teach me how to paddle board, when I was done and when Nicole checked me out, she realized that I actually booked a lesson. She was super cool on telling me to contact Stephanie to get another complimentary 2 hour session or work something out. Nicole had told me in the future in person, when I come back again they will just charge me the same price as the Groupon price and Stephanie told me if I bring a guest, they will work out a discount. I understand things happen and they were cool on working something out. Fast forward, since I have a complimentary 2 hr paddle board, I've decided on a last min thing to bring my family (husband and son) to paddle boarding on my birthday. We got a second board last min, and they charged me $20/ hr, and wouldn't allow my husband to use a Groupon. I didn't want to argue or say anything, because it was my birthday and I also understand it's a small business. But what I felt convoluted was the service. Unlike last time, they have a tent set up, I went by the text instructions and literally walked around the beach and spoke to all of their competitors before I found them. When I called Stephanie, she sounds rude and repeated "they are waiting on the curve!" Which I'm literally walking about, when we got to Nicole, her service was also crappy, like rude. Granted, I didn't tell them about my birthday, nor did I bring up the price (it's my husbands first time, why couldn't he use his Groupon?) I felt like this is too confusing, the price, their system, where they are located (w or w/o tent), and lastly most importantly customer service. The good news is since we walked through all their competitors, they were nice, with same price, I don't think I'll be back to Surf La, but the other shops. Despite the service was complete utterly confusing, Marina Del Ray is a fun place to paddle, it's peaceful, and the water is calm. I recommend the location. Btw, we live in 818, so going out their sitting in one hour traffic, I probably have a higher expectation. read more
