They tried. We chose this hotel to support the downtown business. It wasn't worth it to us though. Our room was hot, it took about four hours for the air condition to cool it down. I think that's because it's an old building. The two valets upon arrival on Sunday were great and helpful. On Monday when we left they were having a conference and they only had one valet. The poor valet! It was very unfair. There were probably 15 cars waiting to be valet parked. Very poor management! While at the same time there were two staff member sitting at the front desk with nothing to do. I saw a man walking around They clipboard and going Into an area that was close. Amazing vintage aesthetic, but very clean and slick. Once you enter your room it's super modern like a new construction high rise apartment. Everything is shiny and new. My first stay was a few months ago but I wanted to make sure to let Yelp know that this hotel is incredible! The bed was comfy, the room was spacious. The room design is somehow both kitschy and modern. Could not hear my neighbors at all. Look closely at the wallpaper in the hallways! Restaurant and cafe were very tasty and the hours convenient. Our party got there at 630. Ordered at 710. Didn't receive our meals until 845. The staff tried to blame our long wait time due to us ordering steak. It takes an hour and a half to make a steak? On top of the long wait time, I was charged twice. For my meal AND someone else's. I tried to call and speak to a manager this morning. Have waited an hour. I called again. Their excuse is "it's Sunday and we are extremely busy and all the managers are unavailable". They said Lisa would call me back. I guess we will see what happens. Oh, they comp'd our table a couple alcoholic beverages. 2 people in our party were not even drinking alcohol. So I guess they think it makes up for the hour and a half wait for our meal. read more

Padre Hotel is your best bet if you're looking for a boutique hotel in Bakersfield. In fact, it's your only bet! The rooms are spacious and very well done. The weak part Is the bathrooms. They don't look as rich as the room. And the lighting is ridiculous. You literally can't see what you're doing in the mirror. Whoever designed the lighting in the bathrooms was insane. But the room makes up for it. The lobby and the restaurants are very disjointed. There's just something off about the casual restaurant, Brimstone. Furniture and decor is kinda cheap. And it's laid out really oddly. It's no wonder there is no good picture of the restaurant on the website. It feels very Radisson. And the food is pretty much a joke. I got the pasta... a gloppy mess. The wedge was great, however. Breakfast in the morning at Farmacy Café was bland. blandI I'm not sure how you can make an egg sandwich with cheese taste bad, but it was here. I would definitely skip the food at this hotel. I'm actually surprised this hotel group runs Tower 23 in San Diego, which is amazing. Including the food. Booked online and checked in at 10pm. Staff was super friendly and helpful. The room was super clean and the bed was incredibly comfortable! The Padre Hotel has so much to offer. I moved to The 'Field four months ago and have already been here on three separate occasions. One of the first things that stands out is how friendly, accommodating, and reasonable the staff is. The rooms are hip and everything is very clean. There are cute little details like the oil rig designs on the wall paper. If anyone is visiting you from out of town this is the place to host them and show off the best of Bakersfield. The bar has really delicious cocktails and manages to have a classy and casual vibe. It's also one of the few spots that's consistently open late in the downtown area. I was really impressed on my recent visit when I met up with friends at the bar and I called ahead to ask if I could park my bicycle somewhere. They were very understanding and let me know they didn't have bike parking but would let me store my bike in a safe place in the lobby. read more

This is a stylish, well-appointed hotel with accoutrements for active young people - liquor six-packs available for local excursions, very of-the-moment remodels of all guest rooms. There's little like it in the area. We are leaving a poor review because we experienced insect bites in our room overnight, and because of the staff's specific response. I work as a dermatologist. I woke up after our night's stay with a cluster of fresh bites on my shoulder. We'd driven 6 hours straight to get to Bakersfield, so it was very unlikely it could have happened earlier in the day. I often inform patients that this "breakfast/lunch/dinner" bite pattern indicates an indoor arthropod, either bedbugs or fleas. I actually found a small insect on the floor, captured it alive, and gave it to staff. 1. No one ever called our room or followed up with us. When we inquired at the front desk hours later, a taken-aback general manager stated that the arthropod did not look like a biting arthopod based on her training. 2. Inexplicably, instead of keeping the insect intact for inspection in the glass I gave to staff, it was crushed and destroyed (photo). 3. I never heard back from staff or the hotel on the EcoLab inspection they stated multiple times would occur. Has it not yet happened, a week later? I can't confirm what bit us overnight, but the pattern fits cimex, the common bedbug, even if it was not the insect we found that morning. It could have been mites or fleas. I can tell you with this degree of concern and communication when even a dermatologist tells them they should be alert, there is zero chance this hotel will ever successfully identify a true infestation. Old hotel building dating from April 12, 1928 about a year & a half before the Great Depression. After a big renovation modernizing the hotel, The Padre reopens on February 1, 2010. The staff at check in was friendly, although not the most customer oriented. Doormen at the front main door are constantly opening the main entrance to create an old school luxury hotel feel. there is a boutique feel to my small yet well designed room with comfortable bed. Surprise was having the bathroom provided with a floor to almost ceiling glass pane facing the bed & window so that a guest lying on the bed can watch a fellow guest taking a shower & vice versa. This could provide a fun kinky scene where you can moon some one by placing your derriere tightly against the glass. Only drawback was check in is 4pm. We arrived around 3:50pm, and the room still wasn't ready. So we walked around DTBF to wait it out. The silver lining was we discovered jewels such as Tiki Ko, FW Woolworth, Kress Building in slowly reviving downtown. Also due to a huge wedding, the Rooftop Lounge was closed to hotel guests, another disappointment. Padre is a great combo of old school & updated nouveau. 4-Yelp stars and possibly higher had there not been the two faux pas mentioned above. read more

My husband and I stayed at the Padre this past weekend while attending a wedding that was also taking place at the hotel. The servers and bartenders at the wedding were great. The room was very comfortable and I loved the unique shower. Everything was clean and comfortable. The one thing I would've liked is better curtains because they let in light at the ends. Other than that, though, the room was great and we had a very pleasant stay. The young woman who checked us in was also very helpful and professional. read more

For those who've never been to Bakersfield before, it's an eye opening experience. The people who live there must be saints because the weather is extremely hot, and overall, driving to get there feels similar to driving out to Arizona. What brought us to Bakersfield? Jackson Brown front row tickets. His shows are sold old everywhere else except for Bakersfield. The Padre was rated one of the top downtown hotels. That's probably true. It feels more like a spacious boutique hotel with 8 floors - there are sweeping views of...Bakersfield and mountains. It's next to the Greyhound bus station and I was scared to death walking my dog for half a block once I left the bright lights of the bus station. The front desk did confirm that I need to be aware of my surroundings in that neighborhood. Think: drug deals in plain sight, aggressive lone wolfs circling around you, and limited lighting. Room: We stayed at the "Farmers Daughter," room, the largest and most luxurious suite they had to offer on the 8th floor. The room itself was overdecorated with a taste I can't describe and it was not a relaxing experience. It was literally the strangest room I've ever been in. The water to the bathtub shoots down from the ceiling and it nearly took my head off. The toilet area looks like a scene from the movie Carrie. The air conditioning shot straight on my face all night, I was choking and I couldn't sleep. Food: We ordered room service and it was actually pretty good. I had a beet salad and salmon. The calamari was the tenderest calamari I've ever had. We ordered a bacon cheesecake and ate the cheesecake but left the bacon. It was delish. Hey, when I'm Rome! Fitness: I don't think there was a fitness room. Overall, I can't think of a better stay in Bakersfield. The hotel renovation could have been done more tastefully and elegantly. The people were friendly and it seemed like the place to go for a bite or for drinks if you were a young working professional and looking for a more trendy Bakersfield scene. But still, what a strange and unique experience, one I won't seek out again soon, but a memorable one for sure. read more

There was a lot of hype for me around this place. But like it's past, I think it has its ups and downs. We came to check-in Friday night (the room was booked in advance for me through work) and there was one hell of a party going on. People around outside, cars lined up for valet (the only on-site parking option), and a club of some sort with music so loud it was pounding outside so much you could feel it in your car! We waited in the valet line, dropped our car and walked inside. Well, I would say we 'tried to walk' inside but this place was packed! From the bar to the dining room, the cocktail lounge, and then the attached club (al that noise was coming from INSIDE the hotel!?). We found the front desk and had a pleasant time yelling (so we could be heard over the cacophony) back and forth to the hotel employee as we checked in. We got our room key and went up three floors, to a corner room, right, over, the club. The room almost vibrated. No, actually, I sat on the couch looking wide-eyed at my wife at the prospect of trying to sleep with this going on, as my butt DID literally vibrate in the seat, from the bass coming from the club three stories below. There was no way we could stay here. We called the front desk and they told us the hotel was sold out and that there was a disclaimer that had to be acknowledged on the weekends to book these rooms acknowledging that there is a loud club on the weekends. Well, I didn't make the reservation so I had no clue. But they said they had nothing open. So we sat for a few minutes in dumbfound shock as we debated whether or not to just drive home at 9 pm instead of sleeping here. A few minutes later, a man named Ash called and spoke with my wife. He said they had a room on hold that they would release and clean and let us move to in about 45 minutes. So we waited, and about an hour later, we got a new room key and made our way to the opposite side of the hotel, and to the fifth floor. It was silent as can be! Thank you Ash! Why oh why, do they even let guests in the rooms over the club? Wow. After all of that, we lost out on our relax and hang out time in the hotel that night as we were too tired at that point to do anything but sleep. The bed was very comfortable, a nice memory foam topper made it deep and luxurious feeling. The bathroom was huge and the shower looked nice too. We slept, got up and left. I appreciate the efforts of Ash to help us find another room, but finding ourselves in that situation in the first place just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The hotel was interesting and a bit funky, but nothing unique or luxurious enough to warrant a return. read more

I recently had a short stay at the Padre Hotel in Bakersfield. This place is definitely a true gem! The hotel is locate in a convenient location close to plenty of restaurants, coffee shops and a splattering of unique retail. The design of the lobby is brights welcoming and incredibly easy to navigate with an attractive boutique hotel vibe. If you are the type of person who enjoys relaxing and hunkering down they have you covered. A morning cafe with coffee and breakfast, a great restaurant that services lunch, dinner and late-night drinks, as well as room service if you really want to truly hunker down. I can say hands down that the service I received from each staff member was excellent: from the front desk, to the restaurant staff, to the maintenance department (my door key initially wouldn't work), to the staff that expedited the food from the kitchen. Everyone was professional, incredibly polite, personable and kind. Huge shout-out to Taylor at the front desk who made me feel like I was an important guest of the hotel. Her warmth, humor and personable demeanor should be an example to anyone in the hospitality industry. As well I want to thank Rob and Nico at the bar who were incredibly kind and offered awesome service and great conversation. They are both truly friendly and helpful guys. I highly recommend the stay and by all means go sit at the bar. The rooms are spacious, well-appointed, bright and clean and the staff want to make sure you have everything that you need to be comfortable. This isn't a place with a staff that recites memorized questions and canned service statements but a place full of unique people that truly want to provide real service to their clientele. What a fabulous day we had at the Padre Hotel. We made reservations from the road on our road trip and the price point was very reasonable. We arrived road weary Looking forward to enjoying our own bottle of wine in the room. The bartender offered us to stemless classes to take to our room which we thought was very kind. They also filled our cooler with ice for us from the bar and made sure that all our needs are taken care of. The room was clean and orderly and very well decorated. Although the downtown area was a bit run down and there were numerous homeless folks, there were a lot of restaurants end it looks like they're trying to upscale. We were very grateful for valet parking parking is limited and we were worried about the security of our vehicle. All in all we recommend it highly. read more

A classic vintage space brought back into the present. We were at the Padre for a group occasion, and the staff was thoroughly professional and helpful and available at all times. This is important when it's valet parking, and you are coming and going at different hours. An event catered in the hotel was nicely done, with an ample buffet table, themed bar drinks, and tiny nibbles offered by the cheerful wait staff. The rooms were nicely updated, with custom themed wall paper in the hallways. My only negative is that housekeeping was not scrupulous about my requests for hypo-allergenic bedding; there were residual feathers under the mattress cover, which could pose a danger to someone with more serious allergies. All in all, a fine place for a special event, or a stay exploring the old and artsy action in this historic downtown area. read more

A group of us from all over, met there to attend the "Haunted Tavern" show on Sept 30. It was a great show with lots of laughs! Our rooms were very nice and clean. I've stayed here once before and have attended a few events. Always a good time and always great service! One of my favorite events was a wine tasting several years ago. I think it was a 5 course dinner, each course paired with a different wine and the owner or representative of the wine company was there to talk about the different wines. The food was amazing too! Nice Boutique Hotel in Bakersfield. There are a few event spaces and restaurants there. The downside to that was the night I was there, they had events booked and there were huge crowds. It seemed properly staffed and besides the noise there wasn't anything else to complain about. The bar had great food and there was another restaurant but I didn't eat there. There was also a cafe in the lobby for coffee, tea, sandwiches, breakfast, etc. The pancakes were good. The rooms were nice and spacious. The shower was unique in the sense that there was a glass window into the bedroom. There was a curtain for privacy as well. Beds were comfortable. Front staff were very polite and courteous, greeting you and opening doors for you. I would definitely stay there again when I'm in the area. read more

Overall great experience at The Padre. I was in town for the night with a group of friends and this is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat and go out for some drinks. Dinner was pretty much appetizers. We thought the prices were a bit steep, but when we tasted the quality of the food, there were zero complaints. The calamari was AMAZING. It was perfectly fried and smothered with this sweet/spicy sauce that was paired super well with the crispy calamari. We also ordered a couple flat bread pizzas, and the flavor was spot on. Drinks were what you would expect and priced at what you would expect. The third floor patio featured a really nice outdoor seating area overlooking downtown. At around 10pm the nightclub opens and there was a huge crowd of people. Very lively and welcoming vibe. My reasoning for 4 stars instead of 5 is that the music could only be heard in one section of the club. There were speakers in the ceiling but they did not appear to be working. This caused a huge cluster of traffic in solely the area where music was playing. read more

Decorated with love and wit, super clean, hip and cool, the Padre manages to be ultramodern and historical at the same time. Very polite staff and a bar, restaurant and coffee shop all on the premises. The coffee shop opens up right at 6:00 and offers a very decent cup of coffee. Free Wi-Fi. The room I stayed in was very comfortable with super cozy bedding, plentiful hot water and thirsty towels in the bath. Nice, high quality toiletries Parking is scarce; they automatically charge a $10 valet fee to your bill so if you don't have a car, make sure you let the staff know. Room service was a bit slow and they mixed up one of my items but were able to fix the problem. Can I also say that it is very helpful to have the large PADRE HOTEL sign on top of the hotel? Wow, Bakersfield is a place I have not seen since I made the move to California 5 years back! What lead me here was a Spartan Race in Lebec in October. What is going on in Bako?! One of the longest standing hotels in Central Valley California ready to make you comfortable and take you away from the dust and grime. I see the kind of chic, modern, urban vibe that this hotel is trying to evoke. Yeah it works here, the prices for the accomodations definitely reflect that. My friend and I booked the Double Deuce room, which had 2 full sized beds, down feather bedding, flat screen TV, coffee maker, fridge, and nice shower tub combo. Thanks to a great friend, we got the room on a discounted rate. The beds ARE COMFORTABLE! It was so hard to get out of them. It was a delight to sleep on them. We did not even go downstairs to check out the other amenities. Room was spotless, well-appointed, and nice. We also did room service and they did have some complimentary toiletry items at the front desk. All you got to do is call.
