I was here today with my cranky hangry pre teen. The place was packed. If that is any indication that the food is good, I don't know what is. I order the father Danny which is their meatball sub. Was informed it was 30 minutes. Fine. 40 minutes later my pre teen is getting antsy. Then I'm informed just a little while longer. Meanwhile I'm witnessing the chef walk out the door, go down the street, and return with fresh broccoli rabe from one of the vendors. Now I'm considering walking out. And then the sandwich arrives. It is a glorious sandwich with perfect textured meatballs, a tangy red sauce, ricotta and mozzarella and pesto. My son's rage vanished immediately. This is the best hands down meatball sandwich I ever had. Everything was on point. Meatball itself was not mealy or super dense, just the perfect bite. One sandwich at $16 was massive enough to where the both of us had to take home leftovers (which we are eating right now). Point being is that the sandwiches are to die for. Woah this place was insane every aspect of the sandwiches were incredible. Especially the bread which beat out every other sandwich roll I've had in Philly. Loved the "El Limone" cutlet sandwich. Although this classy looking spot doesn't have any large billboards and signs outside announcing "The best ________ in Philly!" they simply let they perfectly executed sandwiches do the talking. In fact, this place was so low key that I nearly walked by it as I was trying to find it. The Arista is perhaps the most delicious roast pork sandwich I have ever eaten. In this sandwich everything is done with intention, even the description - roasted suckling pig, broccoli rabe, long hots and sharp provolone. Each of these elements stand out in every bite working off of one another perfectly all making themselves known to form a juicy, cohesive whole. I had this sandwich to go where I reheated it in a toaster oven a few hours later and still could taste the greatness. I just imagine how much better it would be sitting in the shop fresh from the kitchen (next time). The Figaro is another excellent sandwich - Sweet fig jam, fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers, spicy eggplant, arugula, walnut gremolata and soppressata. Its a heavy hitter of strong flavors - the fresh mozzarella is really just there for texture getting lost in the mix. I thought it would be better with a brie, or an Italian inspired equivalent such as Robiola to play off the fig jam sweetness. Let me tell you a couple of three things. Order at the counter, then grab a seat - they will bring the food out to you, or there is a bench to wait for to go orders. Cash is king! You will probably get a better deal paying with cash - they have an ATM on the premises as well. The staff is friendly and patient - they will give suggestions to help you find your ideal sandwich. Excellent Sammie place and as good as I remember eating from them from my last visit about 1 year ago. Great combos and fairly priced and the newish location has more seating than the original place. We got a lamb sausage Sammie and it was nuanced, and tasty with clear attention all to important details, from the seeded roll to the balsamic drizzle and the fresh arugula. Excellent ! Friday afternoon and we visit Cappuccios Meats and ask for a lunch recommendation. With out hesitating they tell us Paesano's down the street. The butcher said his parents would go there for the brisket sandwich. Sold! And we were not disappointed. We started with the soup of the day, a brisket soup that was beyond savory good. We could have stopped there but we ordered the Paesano and the Gustaio. You order at the counter and they bring it to you. I ate the G and it was Lamb goodness. The meat, paired with Gorgonzola and that cherry mustard (?) and a bit of arugula and fennel, wows. And the fresh, not dry, not too chewy, seeded roll was yumm. I saved my half of the paesano for home and had it on Saturday. I know it wasn't as a perfect as in the restaurant but oh my it was juicy good. Will be back for more. read more

As my 2 1/2 year-old grandson would say: it's not fair. I don't live in Philly, but Philly is really a great sandwich town. I've had John's roast pork and Angelo's, and several other very well-known sandwich, places, but nobody does it like Paesano's. They're just different and they excel at what they do. I come here more than any other restaurant in Philly, and I just keep coming back. The people are great, and the food is just on another level. You can get a good hoagie at a lot of places. The sandwich I had today was the Bolognese. Literally fried lasagna Bolognese in a soft hoagie roll. You taste all the flavors, everything going on. Simple yet complex and so unbelievably good. I've probably been here a half a dozen times and I live 2000 miles away. The sweet peppers balance the savory lasagna and the roll is a perfectly seeded roll. Wow. This place is a must visit for their tasting menu. Let me start off by saying that they are absolutely not charging enough for this meal (but I don't mind that). With the price tag of $75 pp, I assumed that we would receive one option from each of the four courses, certainly not that we would be receiving everything listed on the menu (four antipasti, 2 pasta, 1 secondi, 1 dessert). Second, the service is like being part of the owner's family. It is such a family-run business (son and daughter waiters, chef dad) and you can really tell from the overall casual yet super professional vibe. Every interaction with the three of them was pleasant and they were so attentive to each table. Food: - Antipasti: -- Zucca: zucchini stuffed with cheese and potatoes: an interesting combination of ingredients and aesthetically pleasing --- Caricofi: fried artichoke stalk with a delightful white wine/caper sauce -- Mondeghili: brisket and mortadella meatballs with tomato aioli. I may never appreciate a meatball without these two fillings again. -- Insalata: classic salad of walnuts, Gorgonzola, apples. Smart combinations - Pasta: -- Franco bolli: stuffed stamps with ricotta and delicata. There were only about four of these and they were so melt-in-your mouth buttery that I probably would not have wanted any more or it would've been too rich --Lasagna toscani: I really have no idea what "ancient meat sauce" or "exotic spices" are but they worked perfectly in this dis - Secondi: the pollo was delicious. It could easily have been an overpowering balsamic dish but it was just right. Why was there shaved cheese on top? I don't know and I would never not want it this way. - Dolce mista: three dishes: crepe + hazelnut/chocolate spread (amazing), olive oil cake (very nicely done), and classic browny (very fudgy). You will leave FULL. BYOB and one of the tables brought seemingly a mini bar, so get creative if you want. I almost forgot the bread that started the meal, which came with an olive oil/eggplant/cheese dip that was divine. Truly start to finish an exceptional tasting menu. Stopped by on a Sunday just after 4pm for a "little" snack. Super friendly and relaxed staff in a cozy spot for YA HOAGIE NEEDS. We ordered the Arista (roast pork) at the counter and sat down with our self-serve water in the diner-esque seating area. The sandwich came out quickly, and in a MASSIVE portion. Although the sandwich isn't long, it's stuffed and piled high with prime ingredients made with looooove. If I'm back in the area, will def want to try the namesake Paesano (brisket). You really can't beat a ~$15-$16 big ass sandwich that's easily shared between 2 people. If you're in a bigger group and feeling rowdy, I'd recommend a little sandwich tasting session and splitting 3-4 sandwiches??? read more

Dad is the chef and his 2 sons (and one other female not related) handle the front service. It really feels like a cozy family meal. BYOB is always a plus. This is genuinely the best sandwich place I have ever been to. We tried four kinds of sandwiches and both desserts on their menu that day, and every single sandwich was perfect. The lamb sandwich with the mostarda... Oof, the combination of spicy, meaty, sweet, fresh and perfectly textured bread reminded me of the way they talk about sandwiches in The Bear. The fig jam sandwich was also brilliant. I could eat those sandwiches for every meal, every single day and still be surprised by every bite. I took my parents there on their first visit to Philly, and the service was so lovely and warm. We found out later that the person who took our order, got us dessert and gave us sambuca was the owner's son, and he was so passionate and sweet about everything on their menu! I can't leave a review without mentioning the chocolate torte. It's rich, sweet, salty, smooth and melts in the mouth like the most decadent thing I have ever tasted. My Dad said the place feels like something straight out of the Godfather (in a good way), and I thought the place was really sweet, unpretentious and lovely. Must go if you're in Philly! read more

Service is phenomenal. We had a large party with a baby. One of the employees saw us standing in the corner without a table and created a table for us as soon as he saw someone leaving/table became available! While my friend was standing to find someone to give her a to go box, he noticed it and just came out with some without even asking! Natural at reading the room. They all deserve a super stars. Had "The Paesano" from Paesano's in Philly yesterday. This is in the Italian market area of South Philly which I love (aside from finding parking) and the people who worked here were all super friendly and helpful. I posted a picture with the ingredients for this one. This had a flavor that I've maybe never tasted before all wrapped in one. I enjoyed how it all played off each other (I could eat pepperoncini on anything and be happy too) and the roll was wonderful. Unfortunately I will say that the brisket was a bit tough, which surprised me. I believe it was cut on the wrong angle but there were multiple bites where I really had to tear at it. Had this brisket been as tender as it should have, I'd put this sandwich up against most sandwiches in the city...and I mean that. Put a properly trimmed and roasted brisket on this one and it's up there with the best roast pork's and cheesesteaks around imo Definitely Didn't Suck, but did leave room for improvement for sure. Wow! We've walked past Paesano's so many times and never really realized they were a sandwich shop. We finally stopped by while doing some holiday shopping and were really impressed. The menu is creative and very different from other sandwich shops, and we immediately saw SO many things we wanted to try. We settled on the Liveracce: the fried chicken liver, the salami, the orange jam, and the blue cheese all were such bold flavors, but somehow they all worked together. The crisp peppery taste of the arugula and the bite of the oregano-coated raw onions also provided a good balance to the sandwich. The bread was also great - fluffy, yet crispy. I was glad that we split the sandwich, as it was so rich, we both felt that we could not have eaten a whole one in a single sitting. (If you pay with cash, the sandwich is $15--with card, it comes out closer to $17.) After wrapping up our shopping, we decided we liked Paesano's so much, we wanted to try it again! We got the Daddy Wad to go. It was delicious, especially the peppers, but we would recommend eating it in person if possible, as it turned out to be a very juicy sandwich, so the bread was a little soggy when we got home ~30 minutes later. The staff was really nice, the patrons were really friendly, and there was ample seating. tl;dr the sandwiches at this underrated fast-casual stalwart are enormous and surprisingly sophisticated -- skip out on the "famous" cheesesteak or roast pork joints, and spend all of your money (and appetite) here instead Paesano's Philly Style has been around the block -- literally and figuratively. Since being awarded Best Sandwich Shop by Philadelphia Magazine back in 2009, Peter McAndrews' sandwich store has bounced around South Philly and Fishtown, before finally into its current, fast-casual-style location in the Italian Market. Apart from the black-and-white penny tile outside the entrance, the covered storefront blends into the surrounding Italian Market block -- when I'm looking for Paesano's, I keep my eyes peeled for Villa di Roma across the street. But the shop's indoor decor is notably chic and funky. The walls are whitewashed, and the finishes are premium, including the ornate lighting fixtures, hardwood tables, and a marble checkout counter. The space is furnished with an off-the-wall mix of old-time photographs, melted wax sculptures, and antique butchery utensils. A curious blend of oldies and Spanish-language music echoes around the room. My partner and I first arrived for an early weekday dinner, and the shop wasn't too busy. Paesano's tongue-in-cheek sandwich lineup is mostly approachable, with occasionally adventurous additions to separate Paesano's from the pack. We opted to split the namesake Paesano's sandwich. The shredded beef brisket was moderately tender, the pepperoncini and horseradish provided a pleasant kick, and the fried egg added another unexpected dimension of flavor. Even though we dined in, our sandwich was wrapped -- as such, the seeded roll was dripping wet with the rich gravy. Nonetheless, I was hooked, and I wanted to go back to Paesano's one final time before leaving Philly. During my second visit, the weekday lunch crowd was equally minimal. My partner and I, armed with heftier appetites, split the Knuckle and the Liveracce. This time, our sandwiches were served on plates, and our Carangi rolls were perfectly crisp. The beef knuckle was broadly reminiscent of a roast pork sandwich, particularly due to the broccoli rabe. That being said, the salami boosted the savory saltiness, while the caper and lemon perfectly cut through the acidity. Meanwhile, the chicken liver was crispy (but quickly lost its texture) and was highlighted by strong, orangey acidity and spicy, tangy peppers. Service was efficient, and each sandwich ran $15-16 (cash only). While the sandwiches are hearty enough to split between 2, they are mouthwatering enough that you'll want your own. As my final meal in Philly, I don't think I could've done much better than Paesano's. It's a shame that this spot doesn't have the same name recognition as Pat's and Geno's just down the block -- Paesano's sandwiches are the ones that I will be craving after I leave the city. read more

This place is one for the books! Saw on the window that they offered gluten free options so I had to check it out for myself. The staff was super friendly and guided me thru the menu on what they can prepare gluten free. I decided on the Fígaro sub and was able to substitute the cheese to vegan mozzarella cheese. The Fígaro consist of Sweet fig marmalade, mozzarella, roasted red pepper, arugula, lemon hazelnut gremolata, and soppressata which was amazing good and the best part was that the gluten free bread did not fall apart, was not dense and it was really good. When you are in Italian market area, make sure to stop by at this sandwich shop. Staff is super friendly and helpful, also knowledgeable about the menu. They open from 10 to 7. Very clean and intimate dining area, nicely decorated. They used to have a store one block away, but I prefer the new spot. Bolognese: it has eggplant, mortadella, pistachio, raisins. Very interesting and unique combination but it came out so delicious. The sweetness from the raisin sneaked in as I am savoring it. Don't imagine a slab lasagna in it. I barely noticed it as all ingredients blended in. Unfortunately, my husband didn't like it but I ENJOYED it. Figaro: fig spread, mozzarella, arugula, hazelnut. I'm not a big fan of arugula because it's bitter but the sweetness of the fig toned it down. Again, a very unique flavor. Besides Figaro, Giardina is another option for vegetarians. For those who are gluten free, rejoice. They serve gluten free bread from Taffet, a block away from the store, which is known for various types of gluten free bread. Fantastic sandwiches and great service! We came in for lunch on a weekday and it was busy. Cash payments give you a discount but they do take card, and there's an ATM inside. We got an anti pasta meatball and two sandwiches. The Paesano (I think it was called? Brisket sandwich) was delicious and mouse but could have used arugula imo. The chicken cutlet special of the day had a fat slice of cheese and vodka sauce and it was sooo good. We were told that the special sandwiches in the winter are a bit heavier than those in the summer. I thought the meatball was really good, tender and not too salty. The sandwich was a little salty. Nothing better then stumbling into a small place on random Thursday... and walking away convinced this is some of the best food you've ever tasted. Full disclosure... we had just walked down from another popular spot a few blocks up and leaving disappointed by the long line. With (3) kids in tow we knew we needed to find something fast. Walking in Paesano's we were surprised to find open tables, but we risked it and sat down. WHAT A GREAT ACCIDENT. We ordered a Paesano, Gustaio, and Plain Fries w/wiz. Literally some of the best food I've ever eaten. Fresh cut crispy fries, with a wiz clearly made in house (believe me we asked around if we could buy something similar anywhere on 9th) The sandwiches were just amazing. All fresh ingredients... and honestly combinations you'd never imagine, and each one perfect. If I'm not stating this emphatically enough... after buying (2) sandwiches and fries to share, we continued our tour of 9th street. We were so blown away we returned and bought (4) more sandwiches to take on our 4 hour drive home. I can report, they are nearly as good reheated!
