I've been to the Di Bruno Bros location at Rittenhouse Square several times, but I visited this location - the original Di Bruno Bros storefront - this morning with friends when we were exploring the Italian Market area. The store opened in 1939, and it's only 300 square feet. It's tiny but it smells heavenly. It's called The House of Cheese for its cheese "cave" and when you walk in? Wow. The smell of cheese just hits you. It's amazing. It is a tiny shop, but it's well stocked with some very high end Italian food products. Definitely a great place to visit if you're cooking Italian for dinner, setting up a charcuterie board, or want to smell some cheese. read more

I stop by here impulsively while walking arround the area. Let me first say that this sort of shop isn't a place I would typically go. The products all look amazing but they are a little above my typical grocery budget. As a result even though the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, I was hesitant to engage too much. Ultimately I bought a few "orphan" cheeses and some bread. The bread was AMAZING and I can't recommend it highly enough. The cheese was fine by my selection didn't really go together that well. Had I been more willing to seek the help of the staff I'm sure I would have wound up with a more pleasing combination. For $70 per person, you have the entire store to yourself between the hours of 7:00 PM through 9:00 PM (advance reservations are a must, along with a deposit). There were 10 of us in total and we felt that it was just the right amount of people. The friendly and funny cheese mongers put together numerous plates of cheeses, cured meats, olives, nuts, and even chocolates for us to sample. They explained the rationale behind the pairings as they went along, so essentially, this is not only a food-based event but it's educational also! Happen to see a bag of breadsticks on the shelf that you feel compelled to try? Hand it over to the mongers and they'll open it for you. Literally, you can sample anything in the store. And you'll receive a discount on anything you purchase that night also. We purchased some cocoa covered almonds that didn't stand a chance in our home. Fantastic! The highlight of the event was sampling a very special prosciutto that runs about $100 per pound. Perhaps the pig was a gift from heaven? It must have been, as it was melt-in-your-mouth delish. The funniest aspect of the evening were the passers-by who tried to enter the store and join the party. Tough noogies! Now that this is in my neck of the woods, it's both a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that if I'm craving a nice block of goat cheese, I've got a place. A curse in that it takes everything in my power to not visit here every single day. It's a beacon of all things charcuterie and I'm hooked. It's a tiny Italian Market establishment, but stocked to the brim with aged cheeses, dried & cured meats, jars of sweet jams and spicy olives, vodka sauce & arrabiata, and a good variety of crackers and breads (if you get there early enough). All that's missing is wine, but just go half a block down to DiBrunos bottle shop and you're set. Word on the street is they host wine and cheese parties. You can rent out the place for the night and impress your friends and coworkers by nibbling on a chunk of Gouda and saying "yes, this is cheese." Winding down our time at the Italian market, we decided to stop in and get some snacks for dinner, but it looked like the rest of Philly had the same idea based on the crowd inside! Di Bruno Bros staff are top notch, not only explaining everything you could imagine with the thing you're pointing at behind the counter, but also in giving you great pairing advice if you want one thing to go with another. We got the following things: Blue cheese Parmesan Cheese liver pate Prosciutto Man this was some good stuff! Cheese is excellent, coming from "the house of cheese". The blue cheese was both creamy and had these little crunchy ends to it which made me smile every time I took a bite. The Parmesan was also fresh and really popped with flavor. As for the meats, i'd never tried pate before Di Bruno Bros, but how delicious! The prosciutto wrapping the blue cheese was some of the best things we'd eaten in Philly. Everything we sampled was fresh, and even if you weren't sure about a cheese or a cured meat, they'd happily slice a little off for you to try, and try we did. I really didn't taste anything I didn't like. The problem, it seems, was making a selection! I didn't know what I was expecting when I walked in, but if I lived in the area, i'd be at Di Bruno Bros several times a month for snacks. Came here for a 30th birthday after hours and had such a great time with a few friends. I never been here during the day but I highly suggest making a booking after hours and you can try ANYTHING you want in the store for approximately 2 hours (except the raw foods - like bacon.. if only they could cook it!). It comes with a price but its SO worth it and so much fun! You can be fancy schmancy and bring your own wine/beer too :) The staff is incredibly knowledgeable about all their items. Ask them anything and they will be able to answer it all. Staff is very energetic and have great energy. We all had a blast and learned so much about cheeses. From storing it, to cutting it, to temperature control, etc. Showing photos of the place to other store owners in different parts of the world their first reaction is total shock and they visible cringe seeing pics of unrefrigerated cheese. This place always had the best stuff including its famous Abruzzese spread, French and Italian cheeses and its urbane staff. However, the owners decided to be significantly more elitist in its selection of great cheeses and noble meats. As of two years ago, the owners discontinued selling the famous Pecorino del Poliziotto or ( as wildly considered the best cured meat in Italy) the famous salsiccia secca from Chiaravalle Centrale in Calabria. This is also known as the Cisco sausage. These unfortunate decisions by the owner have cost them most of old school South Philadelphia's business. I wish you good luck, Emilio. read more

I have ordered casual catering meals from Di Bruno Bros for family gatherings and cheese boards for entertaining for the past 9 years, and have always been delighted. Not this year! The website said "gluten-free crackers available upon request" so I requested them for my gluten free guests. They advised me that there was only one type of gluten free cracker, so I shouldn't ask for the whole order to be gluten free. I thought okay, I'll buy some additional gluten free crackers at the market. They did not tell me there would be a $15 charge for the gluten free crackers. When I saw it on the bill I figured it must be a tray of really nice gourmet gluten free crackers and let it go. So, I was stunned when my husband returned from the South Philly pick up with a plastic bowl of plain rice crackers, about 20% broken. I could buy a package of those at Acme for $3.79. They basically charged me $11.00 to carelessly toss them in a container. I was annoyed, but oh well, stuff happens and they're busy. Fortunately, we found two delicious gluten free crackers elsewhere. Those were eaten, the rice crackers they sent were not. I would have been fine if that was the only disappointment. However, the Marcona almonds included on the board were also broken, mostly chopped up like filler, with very few whole almonds. Moreover, the Manchego cheese on the tray was cut wrong, so that most of the slices were completely covered with rind on one side. I've had Manchego before, and this is not how it is served. I put on gloves and sliced the backs off half the order before arranging everything on my own dishes. It was very clear that they threw this together with no concern for customer satisfaction.
