Visiting family in the city and this was one of the places they love. It had that family owned feel and the food was excellent! It's a smaller restaurant and not really a fancy place. I had my rehearsal dinner here the night before my wedding and it was everything I dreamed of and more! The team were so easy going with everything, treated us like family the second we all walked in. The food is incredibleee here and such an amazing fixed menu for large parties with plenty of options. They even provided the best cannolis I've ever had on complete last minute notice for a party of 40. A neighborhood restaurant with a lot of repeat customers. It is byob so plan accordingly. We did not bring our own booze but were provided with two open bottles of really good red wine that had been left by diners earlier in the evening. Free wine! The eggplant appetizer is a play on parmigiana but served cold with slices of mozzarella and fresh basil - delicious! The penne with vodka sauce was average. The pear pasta with honey and prosciutto is delicious but more of a dessert than an entree. The bananas foster was much appreciated by my friend - his favorite dessert. Since moving back to Phila. ten years ago, I've been to Scannichio's several times. Each time food seemed to improve ever so slightly. However, my most recent visit last night was disappointing in that 1. The food was mediocre at best; waaaaay too garlicky; and my appetizer was flavorless; 2. My friend and I were basically asked to leave after an hour. We were told that a couple (gentleman/lady) had arrived too early and were waiting in the vestibule. I'm sorry ...what? It seemed as though we were being punished for not ordering multiple, sufficiently expensive courses (like the evening's filet mignon special, etc.). I also sensed that that we would not have been treated so rudely had we NOT been just two ladies. Every time I've ever been to this place I was with a boyfriend, with male friends; or with some male family members --- and I'd NEVER witnessed this type of poor treatment. read more

Try the veal.... It's the best in the city. Got a reservation for 10 on a Sunday with Birds on the road so we missed the first half but well worth it. Remember it's cash only but there is an ATM there. BYOB. Staff was laid back and accommodated the under 10 year olds with us. read more

The best stuffed artichokes since my nonna! And the shrimp fra diavolo was one of the best I've ever had...on two continents. The host/owner Mark was very welcoming and accommodating. We planned a surprise 60th birthday celebration for 40 guests at Scannicchios last weekend , we could not have asked for a better experience. The restaurants owners and staff were extremely accommodating , the food was plentiful and delicious and the servers and bar staff were attentive. We opted for the set dinner menu which included the following 1st Course : Fried Calamari, Brussel Sprouts in a Balsamic reduction and Meatballs over gravy and ricotta cheese (served family style.) 2nd course: Caesar Salad 3rd course: individual portion of Penne aka Vodka 4th course: was one of the following Eggplant Rolantine Chicken Sicilian Chicken Parmesan Veal Piccata or Broiled Tilapia in a lemon, caper, white wine sauce 5th course: Coffee and Tea and we opted to bring in a birthday cake (but we could have ordered cannolis for $3 each) FYI ... the restaurant is Byob read more

Been going to this restaurant for years and their food is really good. The portions are a nice size and the service is always really good. The prices are fair esp because it is a BYOB. A South Philly gem I highly recommend Scannicchio's if you want great Italian food in South Philly. Old school Philadelphia. One of the waiters (I'm assuming he was the manager or owner) was walking around in Eagles pajamas, this was at around 9pm on a Friday night. I was here for a special event, so we had a prix fix menu, and I didn't pay, so can't comment on the price. I will say that this restaurant could be used in a movie made by Martin Scorsese if he ever does one based in Philly. It has the small, cramped, old-school, Italian, family owed vibe. The atmosphere makes you feel like you are really in Little Italy in Philly. I didn't find the food anything special. Everything tasted pretty deep fried, and didn't have that much flavor. The Chicken Parmesan was a nice size (again, tough to say if this is the regular portion size or what because it was a special event), but the flavor just tasted kinda whatever. The Penne ala Vodka just didn't have much taste; the sauce was watered down, and the pasta just was bland. Same goes with the multitude of appetizers we had, nothing really stood out in a positive way. The bread with the sauces and oils they had was pretty tasty. I was invited here last week for dinner. The owner/manger, a fairly pleasant, if unsmiling man, takes the orders and various minions emerge from the kitchen with the food. The shared clams casino were horrible. Our various pasta dishes were ok, it's just regular dried, not fresh pasta. The pistachio sponge dessert was really boring as well. Having read most of the reviews I can understand why it's not exactly a diverse patronage and it's disturbing to read about the black couple's experience. It is very white and cliquey and really a strange vibe for such a diverse city as ours. It's cash only and, for a BYO, fairly pricey. I was glad to leave. read more

This was so good that it feels pointless to go on about it in a review. A very solid South Philly corner Italian restaurant that gave off that kind of atmosphere. The staff was friendly but not too friendly and the food was excellent and came out not quickly but long enough for you to really want it. I realize this doesn't sound like a 5-star review but that was the vibe I was getting that made me like the place? They had delicious sounding specials. The fried meatballs were amazing and the Caesar salad was creamy and almost comforting. Pasta sauces were so tasty (I rec the vodka sauce) and the meat was also delicious. Their desserts were also very good (if you have the room). It feels like formal dining but it's not because even though there are white table cloths, you can wear casual clothes and be louder at the same time (this prob has to do with why I like the vibe here). I want to live here and never leave. From the time we walked in the door to the time we left, we had an amazing experience. We were greeted by a very friendly man named Mark when we arrived. He showed us to our table and took one of our bottles of wine to open. When he came back, he told us the specials and gave us a minute to review the menu. We had just come from work so we were a little hungry and started to eat the bread and oil on the table. It was FLAVORFUL!! I wasn't expecting it. I said "this is the best bread and oil I've ever had". Next he comes back to take our order. We ask a few questions and he explains each dish with great detail. Gives a few suggestions, and we order meatballs, pear wantons, and calamari as an app and our entrees. Everything delicious. The calamari was hands down the best I've ever had. And I'm a calamari snob. I got the pork chop as my entree (as suggested by Mark) and when I tell you this thing came out and I immediately wanted to pick it up and put it directly in my mouth by the bone. I took the rest to go and ate it the next day for lunch. Even reheated it was better than any other pork chop I've ever gotten. If you're looking for an amazing Italian restaurant that is BYOB, look no further! You won't be disappointed. The portion was giant. I could only finish half. read more

It was good not great, however I'm not certain I would go out of my way to make it a priority to go back. We had reservations and were taken promptly. That was a plus. It was only my husband and myself, we were seated at a table to share with another couple whom we didn't know. That was a bit uncomfortable as we were at the same table. I should have been advised of that possibility when I called for reservations. I felt as though I couldn't relax or talk freely to my husband as someone was 2 feet next to me. I ordered a pasta dish with seafood, It was ok, could have been a lot better had they drained the water from the pasta. The bowl was all water on the bottom, enough that I had to drain it to another bowl they gave me for my seafood shells and I pretty much filled it. The water basically washed away any red sauce there was in the dish. Scallops were hard on the outer edges, and tough inside, either over cooked or cooked earlier and just heated for the dish. My husband said his veal parm was one of the best pieces of veal he ever had so that was great. One thing I wish they gave was a dinner salad with the meal. When you spend upwards of 40-50 bucks on ONE dinner entree, it's not to much to ask to give a dinner salad with the meal. We tried this place as it was close to the stadium and we were going to a show. Parking was not easy so be prepared for that fiasco. Service was good and prompt. The amount of water in my pasta dish and the fact that a small dinner salad isn't including with the prices you pay is what ruined it for me honestly. read more

Came here on a whim driving home from Center City. Road by and my husband said let's see if they have a table. It was early and they did. You should have reservations though. The service and food were amazing. I can't say enough how great this place was after a long and brutal day. We hope to get back there one day in the near future.
