People who need food accommodations for allergies or lifestyle, this is not the place. I was so upset and embarrassed by my experience here tonight. I have a dairy sensitivity and as such, I am a vegan. I requested the "spring enchilada" and it wasn't until everyone else's food was coming that the waitress told me they couldn't do an enchilada without the cheese because it's pre-made. Ew. I reluctantly ordered two overpriced tacos ($7 each). My group of 5 had already finished eating by the time she had some other unnamed person drop off my food for me. All I got was a "sorry" and he ran away. I took a bite of my hardly warm/slightly cold taco with overcooked Brussel sprouts, mushy sweet potatoes and no flavor. Not a word from the waitress or anyone. I was so embarrassed to eat by myself why everyone just watched anyways. She also forgot the extra chips that we asked for so I had nothing to eat. Two inedible tacos, 3/4 of a drink later (we got a pitcher to share between 5 of us) and $25 later, I'm so disappointed no one offered anything to help me despite my visible upset. I didn't want to be a "Karen" and ruin any of my friends night, but what an awful first experience and waste of my money. read more

We loved the nachitos! The chorizo and carrot/cabbage slaw were delicious. I also really liked their salsa and beer selection. The blackened mahi taco was good, but not great. I wouldn't order the carnitas taco again. The meat tasted very dry and it was served on pita bread instead of a taco shell. It was also $7 for 1 taco! I came back and they didn't automatically give me guac. ======= Good food that didn't disappoint, even if the price-to-food ratio was slightly a bit off for my taste. Overall, it' a solid 4-star place, but I just didn't like that they gave us what I believed was complimentary chips, salsa, and guac. The guac was really good and I was super happy that (I thought) it was free. But then the check came and we were charged $9 for it. We didn't think anything of it since both tables to our right and left had it nearly immediately when they sat down as well. Although the guac was great, it definitely was not worth $9! Very good place for appetizers and drinks. The passionfruit margarita is no longer on the menu, but is my choice for the best drink there. The queso fundido is probably the strongest appetizer. I wanted to like this place. It is an overpriced, overrated, mediocre-at-best, "trendy" bar that I hope is replaced soon. I walk by several times a week and finally went in to get a drink with a friend. The host was lovely and helpful (the only reason this place gets any stars). We had a drink and an app. Food was good but overpriced, my wine was fine (though an $11 glass of sauv blanc is on the pricier side even in Boston). We saw our waiter twice. He took our order, and it took him TWENTY MINUTES to come back with my friend's drink (I already had one from the bar from before I got there). What's more, he got her order wrong. By the time he came back to take our food order - no, he did not ask after the TWENTY minute break - we were already mostly done with our drinks. He took our order and didn't ask if I wanted another glass of wine!! He didn't even cash us out. And it was so expensive. There are MUCH better, more reasonable places in the area to check out. I returned here recently and had a great experience with one of the bartenders. He explained to me how the stuffed Jalapeños were made, concocted an excellent Tequila drink, and although he didn't really open up to me until I was gearing toward the check, I saw that innately he definitely has hospitality in him. Id suggest this bartender open up to all guests the way he did to me the last few moments I was there. People often do not realize that positive interaction from a bartender is SO important, I rarely return to bars where bartenders do not care to socialize or show interest in you. Thankfully the food here and their Cucumber tequila drink are great, and I'm excited to try new things on their menu. This is a sad review for me to write as I've been a loyal Burro Bar customer since 2017. The quality has gone down significantly since the pandemic in my opinion - I came for bottomless brunch, and it was evident some of the food was prepared ahead of time. The "poached eggs" were cooked all the way through and some of the food arrived to our table cold. If I do return again, it will unfortunately only be for drinks. read more

Went on a Saturday afternoon around 3:30pm. They have brunch until 3, lunch menu from 3-5 and dinner menu starts at 5. It's a very small restaurant, has nice decor and a big bar. The food was very good. I'll have to come back for dinner some day and have the full menu options. I had the classic margarita which was so good that I got another. They do give you chips and salsa to start which was really good. My son loved the salsa. We saw the queso fundido on the dinner menu and asked if they could make it anyway and they did! We got the chorizo and apple one and it was really good. My son had the carnitas taco and he said for someone who doesn't like fancy stuff, it was delicious. He is 12 and ideally would've taken everything off besides the pork and cheese. I had the shrimp diablo taco which had tons of flavor but came out cold. I also had the taco with a fried egg, chorizo and potatoes which was full of flavor too. As far as service it was a little slow and there wasn't many people there. It took our server quite sometime to take our order after the chips and salsa came. Can't wait to come back for dinner. read more

We enjoyed a superb meal at Burro Bar. The food was excellent and the cocktails very good (more on that next). Our server was courteous and helpful, guiding us on serving sizes. The noise level was on the raucous side, thanks to the lively patrons. No dessert on offer, unfortunately. The two of us shared two small plates and two tacos, which was enough for us along with the excellent corn chips and salsa, but it was a bit less than a typical two course meal. The margaritas de la casa were pure and simple, and I also liked the Papa Doble, which was like a festive twist on a sidecar (less sweet thankfully). The Mexican street corn esquites were a light and balanced combination of sweet, savory and spicy. The enmoladas very tasty - the mole was addicting. The shrimp taco were good too, but the star of the evening was probably the short rib "double stack" taco; incredibly tender and well seasoned beef with a tasty crunchy shell inside another soft shell (the shells are thin, so it worked). We're both looking forward to a second visit - high end Mexican fare is a rare treat in Boston. read more

Decided to come here on somewhat of a whim; I was craving nachos and a spicy margarita. The nachos definitely didn't disappoint! They were very fresh tasting and not as overwhelming and greasy as the normal restaurant nachos. The spicy margarita that I had was just OK. I had the Baja fish taco and the gulf shrimp "diablo" taco. Both tacos were amazing but I liked the extra kick of the shrimp taco. The staff was very friendly, they started a bingo game for guests to play with a $50 gift card as the prize which I thought was something different to do while eating at a restaurant. This place was AMAZING. We were celebrating and the restaurant decorated our area and customized the menu for the celebration. The nachos were incredibly fresh, light and so tasty. The complimentary corn salsa was very flavorful I could have eaten it as my entree! I ordered the superbeasto. And to be honest I was too full to eat it at the restaurant! First time visit, many thoughts about it. I had a reservation for the dinning room and when we walked in, outdoor sitting was empty and I asked if we could be sat in that area. The hostess said she had reservations at 6pm and that it was fully booked. We go to the dining room and after six there were 3 tables empty. Felt very disappointed on that regard. The place is beautifully decorated but one big observation, for some reason it smells like damped clothes. It was very unsettling that this strong smell was not in anybody's attention in the place. Servers were kind. Andres and Gerardo were present until the place got a bit more busy. We had to wait for drinks for a long time, there was no transparency on their end about having one bartender, that would have ease our urge to leave due to that delay. We ordered quesadillas and they were delicious, same as the drinks. I want to come back to give the place another chance. read more

By far THE worst restaurant experience I've had in Boston in 4 years. We had to wait almost 1 hour for our table despite having a reservation - in tiny bar area that was already crammed. We order drinks at the bar to pass the time. Then we are given a cold table by the door in freezing weather. We request a warmer table and they move us. At this point, we are starving, cold and miserable. As we look through the menu, our waiter tells us they will cover our appetizers because of the bad experience. We order 2 apps, and our entrees. The food is VERY mediocre, nothing to write at home about. The 'fusion' take on the Mexican dishes is hit or miss. Finally, the bill arrives - and they haven't comped the appetizers we ordered! Miserable ending to a miserable evening. We tell our waiter who tells the manager. She comes over rudely and talks to us in an extremely rude manner. She snaps at us, doesn't even introducer herself as the manager - very unprofessional. Worst restaurant service I've experienced in Boston. She finally does agree to take off the 2 apps, but her rude and condescending manner and attitude are the nightcap on a totally ABYSMAL restaurant experience!! Will not be back. Save your time & money for better experience and better food elsewhere. read more

Delicious food! The only downside was it was a little pricey but not too bad for Brookline. I got the coconut cod and pork carnitas taco and both were around $7 each. My margarita was also very good and cost around $10. We were able to sit on the outdoor patio which was awesome. Made a reservation for 7:45 about two weeks in advance, arrived at 7:40 and seated by 8... Not much room to stand and wait by the bar-hoping the restaurant will "open up" in warm weather! Quite loud and not the greatest music selection (except for the destiny's child). Godfather was playing on one of the tvs and seeing bloody horse head in bed was not the most appetizing pre-dinner sight! Yummy food with complimentary chips and salsa. We had queso, street corn, crispy tofu and diablo shrimp tacos. All nice flavors, but $7-8 for one small taco is not okaaaay! Unfortunately the queso didn't stay melted so was a bit difficult to manage/eat. Not the best place for vegetarians, definitely not for vegans. Great tequila and mezcal selection. YUM this place is delicious! newly opened and it's poppin on a weekday night (didn't make reservations and we were lucky with getting seated at 6:30)! we ordered the nachos (LOADED. it is very filling! different than many other places, they have just one flat layer of chips and a TON of toppings on top, the cheese isn't oily at all and does not seep into all the chips and the chorizo gives it a spicy kick to the dish, but not too overwhelming. the chips are really crunchy. you can definitely share this with a couple of drinks. also having pickled carrots as a topping really made the nachos light! not heavy at all! different and good! a staple dish that you must order every time) and the tropical chicharron (OHSNAP highly recommend! chicharron is basically pork belly, and it is so crispy and well cooked here. the outside crust is crisy and the meat is soft and its already semi cut into bite size pieces on a bed of tangy bright salad. i shouldved ordered another one). 2 dishes were enough to share between two people. definitely want to come back to try other dishes like the charred octopus and queso dips and tacos . I love how the menus here are 75% on alcohol (tequila mostly) and 25% food. didn't get any of the drinks tonight, but will def try the flights and margaritas next time! great environment and a ton of street parking available and right in front of a t stop! read more

Came here last week for a birthday celebration with two friends. We arrived on time for our 7 pm reservation, unfortunately our table was not ready as the party before us lingered for 3 hours. We weren't sat until about 7:25, but the hostess was very apologetic and gave us frequent updates. Understanding that a restaurant cannot force someone out of their table, I did not take this to be an issue on the restaurant's part and was appreciative of how attentive they were to the situation. We ordered the guac and Mexican corn for appetizers. Both were delicious. The Mexican corn had a kick to it that i was not expecting, but I couldn't stop eating it so always a good sign. We each ordered a number of tacos, including the crispy cococut cod, the baja fish, the carnitas, and the beef tongue. None of these disappointed, each packed with meat/fish and plenty of flavor. I am always on the hunt for great street tacos, and these definitely hit the spot. Overall - love the vibe of this place. Will definitely return! read more

Great new spot in Brookline. I've been to The Painted Burro (located in Somerville) and I heard that this was the sister restaurant. I would recommend making reservations just because it is a tiny space and you might be waiting awhile if you don't--luckily I made reservations! Our waitress was super attentive and acknowledged that the bar was slow at making our drinks and apologized profusely. My friend and I split the street corn and nachos--super filling! I would recommend that everyone orders apps/small plates if you're not looking to pay the same price for two tacos and a drink and still feel hungry. Splitting the nachos and corn was a smart move because we were definitely full after that. I think you have a group of 4 or more, still get the corn, nachos and other small plates to split and then get a taco as well. Definitely will be back! (wish they had dessert options!) read more

Came here on a weekend night with a friend and overall thought the place was fine, but did disappoint. The atmosphere was popping when we went in. Lighting was just right (just dim enough), good assortment of people, classy decor. Now is the part when I have to say that I am a bit of a margarita snob, so I have higher standards. Always on the rocks, always with enough lime juice to make you wince just a little bit on the first sip. Having lived in San Diego, with some of the best Mexican spots in the US, you can't blame me on that. With that said, I had two margaritas here: the house margarita and blood orange. The blood orange (with exotico blanco) was super watered down, and lacked any sort of punch of flavor. I'm not sure if I just had bad luck because I have read good reviews about this particular one, but this one ended up tasting like watered down orange juice. The house margarita was much better-- the right amount of flavor (not watered down) and definitely did the job, though still not jaw-dropping. We had the pork belly guacamole, and I have to say I agree with the previous poster. This may be the only case that violates my "pork belly makes everything better" belief. This was super flavorful, but not integrated at all into the guacamole-- cumbersome and difficult to eat with the chips. Would've been better to avoid it. We then had some tacos, and I have to say the options were fairly creative. We had the one with chorizo and egg, which was unique but the egg was very runny, making the taco soggy and kind of gross. The mahi mahi was better. Finally, the pricing, as others have mentioned, is a bit steep. In particular, I was bummed to pay over $10 for a watered down margarita, and tacos were eh as well for the value. Overall, while I did not have any glaring bad things to note, there were enough sub-par qualities to leave me wanting more. I'm not in a rush to come back. read more

I went there on a Friday night around 8pm for 2 people They told us its about 45 minutes wait. So we stand around the bar and order some drinks. The drinks are very interesting and good. The ambience of this place is very hip, and more mature crowd (aka not many students). I love the décor and the bar tender is very nice. God yes, Burro Bar is absolutely what we needed in Brookline. Incredible flavors, fresh and well-cooked/seasoned food, unique offerings and presentations, all through a Mexican lens in a fun atmosphere with excellent 'ritas and tequila/mezcal selection and solid service? Yes, please. Two of us split the following small plates (and were stuffed at the end): -The complementary chips and salsa were fresh, homemade, and flavorful -The guac was solid, although not the best I'd ever had (that would be tableside at the dearly departed Zocalo), and a pretty small portion for the price -The enmoladas were lick-your-plate delicious, smothered with complex and flavorful mole and filled with tender pork -The chicken tamale in a tomato-based sauce was also very flavorful, especially the masa itself (rare IMO) -Grouper con coconut was perfectly cooked and swimming in an incredibly delicious coconut and lime mole -Beef tongue taco was tender and tasty -Passion fruit and hibiscus margaritas were excellent, although we were mistakenly served a grapefruit cocktail and weren't too impressed with it (too sweet, paper straw tasted funny) There's a lot more on the menu I'm dying to try, so I'll definitely be back. It can run on the pricy side, with the small plates ranging in price and size, but you don't have to do a ton of damage to your wallet if you plan accordingly- and really, the quality and flavor helps justify the price. UPDATE: subsequent visits had me trying the following: -corn: the deliciousness you'd expect from Mexican street corn, but even better because it's already off the cob and therefore less messy to eat -spicy green beans: not very spicy but really flavorful in a unique way (that shrimp mole is a bit bonkers but really good, not fishy at all) -nachos: good flavors, packed with toppings (mostly cabbage though?), but not enough chips to balance it out, and nowhere near the best nachos I've ever had (that goes to Sunset) -shrimp al aijio: the tastiest version of Mexican shrimp and grits you can get -chilaquiles: everything you want in a brunch entree, just a damn good plate of food read more

After hearing about a new place coming into Washington Square I had to try it! Made reservations for 2 at 815pm on a Thursday night. Arrived early and spent some time at the lovely bar. Every table and seat was full by the time I walked in around 730pm. The bar was crowded and people were standing near it waiting for their table. We tried the New Kids On The Block cocktail and a Passion Fruit margarita. Both delicious! Very refreshing and just the right amount of tequila :) Once we got seated at our table, we were brought chips and a dip. The dip was a paste consistency with a nice kick to it. We had the Nachos Con Chorizo and Squash+Cauliflower Quesos Fundidos to share. These portions were a lot bigger than expected and can be shared by 3-4 people for sure. The Nachos were really good. Chips didn't get soggy even with all of the toppings. The Quesos Fundidos was heavy and cheesy. I think I was expecting more vegetable vs cheese. Still so delicious though! For tacos, we had the Beef Tongue and Short Rib. Meat was so juicy and tender. Service was awesome and deco was fun. It was super loud inside and I felt like I was shouting at my friend but I think it was because it was so busy and packed. I would definitely recommend making a reservation too! Great place to grab drinks and food in Brookline. So glad we have this one! I will be going back to try more items on their margaritas list and tacos!!! read more

Okay I really like this place. Now I'm a big judge on tacos, so when someone says these tacos are okay I'm expect that they're lying. Well when someone raved about this place, they were not lying. The food here is incredible. On a early Sat, hungover Chantel decided to try this place and got the superbeasto which should be renamed the hungover plate, because it has everything you need to be a better you. The fried pork was a bit thin, hoped for bigger but everything else was sooooo good. And the drinks, yes I did drink although I was hungover were so good. After voicing my concern the hostess said she would not put anyone next to us as the next reservation was in an hour and a half. Within 10 minutes someone was sitting next to us. I looove Mexican food, so I was excited when this opened up. I'm not in a hurry to go back, but I'm glad I got to give it a try. I got the crispy tofu taco and the veggie taco. Tofu had some good toppings, but wasn't crispy or marinated. The veggie taco was one of the most difficult things I've ever tried to eat. It was so soggy it broke the tortilla, but I couldn't chew through the greens. I think my friend enjoyed her meat options more than I enjoyed mine. This may be yet another case of The Vegetarian Afterthought. PROS: Location (for me, at least). Drinks are strong and tasty. CONS: Limited menu. Teeny portion sizes. Loud.
