I would rate the food much higher. The menu has gf items broken out and the burger I had was great with a decent bun for being gluten free. However, our experience was tinted by the service. when we showed up the hostess at first just ignored us although it was not busy. Talked to a fellow coworker for 5 mins in front of us and then told us we couldn't eat outside because they were understaffed. Or waitress said that actually they had plenty of staff. Our experience here was really poor. Apparently the kitchen closes at 10:00, but this wasn't on the menu/website, nor did our waitress tell us. We arrived at 9:15pm already knowing what we wanted, but never got the chance to order dessert. When our waitress picked up our dinner plates she told us the kitchen was already closed. The prices in the menu were also $2 less than what we were charged for each item. The prices were still fine but it feels deceptive/cheap. The food was also quite poor, specifically the ragu. It was incredibly salty and bitter, I could only stomach about a quarter of the plate before I had to give up. My partner didn't think it was any better. Their salmon was also over-salted, but it was at least cooked well. The asparagus risotto itself was actually really delicious. We rarely have issues disliking food, we eat out often and at different types of places. Hopefully this was just a bad night for the restaurant , but unfortunately there were too many negatives about our night to return or recommend. read more

Had lunch with my bestie here. We got the pretzel with their cheese sauce and it was ok. I then ordered fries and Mac n cheese with peas. Everything was soo good, perfect girl "dinner" though it was lunch That mac n cheese was to die and will come back for that! Somewhere in my top 5! Stopped by for dinner on a Friday night and sat indoors even thought we preferred to sit outdoors. The outdoor seating on nice days looks nice and relaxed but fills up quickly. The chicken wings were buffalo Sriracha, which had a nice sweet thing through it. The chicken tasted fresh on it, overly though. Everything here was delicious! The Monk Frites are amazing. They do not taste like any other regular fries and paired with the truffle ketchup was truly unique. I came here with 4 friends and we had such a blast. It was poppin on a Thursday night with folks out to eat. We love to see it. The staff is also ON IT. The staff is so nice and friendly, attentive, and funny too. Truly awesome service. Three of us got cheeseburgers with fries and I added special sauce on mine (I saw their cheeseburger nachos included some version of a special sauce) and it was so delicious. If there's ever a special sauce on a menu, you know I'm getting it. This one will not disappoint. My friends also got the pretzel bites and it came with 3 dipping sauces. I'm devastated to be updating my review after more than a decade of dining at Publick House. While they still have an excellent beer selection, the quality of the food has really declined over the past several years. The mac and cheese I raved over in my original review has become truly hit or miss - sometimes quite good, more often runny and flavorless, never as great as it used to be. The recipe has completely changed, and it's not consistent at all. There have been other little things we've noticed over the past few years, and we've been coming less and less as a result. Most recently, we ordered our typical frites and instead of handcut frites as they've always been (and as they are still advertised on the menu), we received shoestring fries like you'd get at a Wendy's or out of a bag in the frozen section at the grocery store. I'm sure I'll continue to come here to eat on occasion, but Publick House has sadly changed so much that it's just not at the top of the list anymore. I truly hope they turn things around, because Washington Square definitely doesn't need another corporate franchise restaurant in its place. read more

The long answer: Gave Publick House another shot. I had a Fiddlehead IPA (highly recommend, in general). I also had the mushroom risotto, which felt wholesome and nutritious but low on flavor. The frites were barely crunchy and most were floppy/not crunchy. I ate them anyway because they tasted good and I was hungry. Overall the vibes were pretty nice and the staff was so welcoming, patient, and kind. Perhaps food-wise it's not incredible, but the (nicer than usual) pub experience is there. read more

We went here on a Fri night at about 6:45, they were too crowded with a 45 min. wait as is typical in the area. They do take reservations, but we just got into town for a visit and did not have time to make one. We returned the next day for lunch between 11:30-12:30. They had good business, but there was no wait and we got seated immediately. There is street parking in the area. Some days and hours are free (check the meters and posted signs). At other times, download the "Passport" parking app and get the zone and space number from the meter for the easiest payment method. Some of the seating in the restaurant is ridiculously too close. They initially tried to sit us at an open table between two other tables. The chairs were so close together that we couldn't even pull them out to get in. We immediately asked to be seated elsewhere and the hostess moved us with no problem. Although they were very nice about it, they should have had the common sense to know that no one could get in there without asking the people at the other tables to move their whole tables over. We were helped by three people on our visit. Two of them were very nice and the third, only became nicer after the tip was received. That third person did not check back on us and did not offer to refill our drinks--we repeatedly had to ask. Further, this third person messed up part of our order. We did not complain and just ate what we were served. We got several menu items with various levels of quality. The rubbed wings (also came with siracha wings mixed in and the wrong sauces, apparently because the server or kitchen messed up) were excellent. The side dish of broccolini was very good. The chicken sandwich was pretty dry and just ok, but the fries that came with it were excellent. The beef stroganoff was really bad. The sauce flavor was awful, the noodles cooked poorly, and the meat quality poor. The frozen dinner version of beef stroganoff at the market is better. Due to our mixed experience, the 4-star average on Yelp is probably about right. Unfortunately, we did not get to try their selection of ales, etc. on this visit and this may raise their rating. We would give these guys another try and would recommend you at least give them a try one time too. read more

DO NOT eat here if you have allergies. I very explicitly explained to my waitress that I had a severe gluten allergy (celiac). She was reassuring, and confirmed again when my food was brought out that it was gluten free. I took a few bites of my salad only to find a crouton in the middle of my salad. After an eventful Saturday afternoon, I decided to wind down at The Publick House for early dinner. Arriving at 5 pm, I initially encountered a small line, which was for table seating. Since I arrived alone, I bypassed the line and took a seat directly at the bar. For food, I decided on the fish & chips ($24). The fish itself seemed flaky, neither dry nor overdone. The breading seemed a touch firm, but I chalked that up to personal preference. The accompanying coleslaw arrived lightly dressed, allowing the crisp freshness of the vegetables to carry the palate. The dressing still carried a light tang, but without the acerbic finish or obscene oily finish found in prototypically American coleslaws. Fries seemed of the traditional cut, not shoestring or steak. They seemed liberally seasoned with salt and were not over-crisped. Overall, I was satisfied with this meal. While $24 is not cheap, I think it is an acceptable price point given the area and execution. read more

I had some great experiences here! I first went here with my parents when they came out for my graduation weekend. We were excited to get a table here, especially on a weekend + graduation festivities going on in Boston. We had great table service with waiters who provided wonderful recommendations and made sure any dietary accommodations were handled. They have plenty of options for people with dairy or gluten allergies, which made it even easier to enjoy this place. We loved their Monks fries, it was probably one of the best things on the menu in our opinion. They had a lot of craft beers with options for all tastes and preferences if you're interested in drinking. The waiters are open to questions and you can tell they want you to have a good time when you're at the Publick House. We liked it so much that we went back the next day for some appetizers before we went to a Red Sox game. I look forward to the next time I stop in with friends! I went with a few friends to celebrate my friends 21st. Everyone else there was 21. the staff accused us of publicly drinking on their patio earlier (we showed up after midnight for the birthday). When we got here, the place was packed! Not only was the bar totally full but there was an extra row of people standing behind the entire bar. We figured it was worth the wait so we took a walk around the neighborhood and got called in 40 minutes later (less than the hour they estimated which was great) We shared the full pot of mussels between two of us. When it arrived, we were initially amazed by the sheer size of it. We're talking about a medium sized stove top pot full of mussels. However as we started eating, we realized at least 1/3 of the mussels never opened up. They seemed to have small cracks so we tried to pry open a bunch. But they smelled funky so we played it safe and tossed the unopened guys. We got the pot 2 flavor, which was full of tomatoes and bacon. So the ones that did open up tasted great. And the fries that came with it were perfectly crispy and weren't greasy. Would come back for more fries and beer, but not the mussels. read more

I used to order the Brendoni 2.0 and that was my favorite, but they haven't had it on the menu in years. Updating this review. This is one of our take-out go-to places since The Thing started. Delicious food as always. I miss the crispy chicken sandwich though ! (((Covid-free sniffles ensue))). But the grilled chicken sandwich has been an excellent alternative. The bacon is perfectly crispy. My husband continues to enjoy the bredoni (sp?). Hopefully when this Thing is over they can bring back some old menu favorites. Their online ordering is simple. And the wait times are extremely reasonable. Pick up service is very friendly m, even as they are back to having in restaurant patrons. They are very safe! When things are back to normal we will be happy to make this place our go to Sunday lunch. They were always so friendly with our kid.
