Came here for a work lunch, it's a pleasant spot inside the Kendall Hotel. I got the curry chicken salad (pictured). The curry had a lot of flavor, and the other ingredients (lettuce, avocado) tasted really fresh. Service was solid, and the space is small but comfortable. The crab cake (singular, in the menu as crab cakes) over greens was good, but for $20 not sure it was worth it. Service is professional, but it's not going to be fast enough for a quick in and out lunch in less than 30 min. Who knew my uncle was a jetsetter who would bring my reunited extended family and I to the Kendall Hotel's quaint living room-style bar, rumored to have the best Boston Creme Pie in the city? I'm glad I got to drink with my relatives this weekend, and also that they brought me here. We sat near a cozy fireplace at mismatched quilted couches and armchairs around an antique metal table type-thing, and soon learned our coveted dessert was out of stock-- but the pecan turtle cheesecake and black and white chocolate mousse made up for it. The drink menu is pretty basic: wines, full bar, and some specialty mixed drinks. As soon as my pretty blue eyes saw this place served champagne, I tried to order a French 75, which evidently stumped both servers and the bartender. ** I've also been back a couple of times to find the waitstaff to be somewhat confused when I order classic drinks (i.e. Tom Collins). One atrocious evening, we were ignored by our waitress for 40 minutes, and had to flag down another one to get service. On some nights, this hotel lobby bar/restaurant is delightfully refreshing and fun, and on others, the customer service and beverage quality is so awful I want to cringe. 2.5 stars for inconsistency. read more

If you order the right thing and you're not in a rush, it's quite a good place to have a leisurely lunch. If you're in a rush, go somewhere else because it's small, has only a few tables, and a few servers to go with it. On the upside, the tomato basil soup is great, the steak tip plate is great (has a huge plate of greens with tasty steak tips on top - it's more of a hearty steak salad than just a plate of tips), the chicken pot pie is good on a cold day. On the sandwich side, the roast beef sandwich is probably one of the best sandwiches there. The menu doesn't change often - so if you like it, great, if not, it gets boring fast. Pricey, but one of the few nice places to get a bite to eat right in the Kendall Square area. So if you're on someone else's dime, and have time to spare, it's a good place to eat lunch. We stayed in the hotel on a bitter cold and snowy night and decided to "eat in" rather than be adventurous. That was definitely the right decision. Our choice of a light meal turned out to be quite hearty. We shared the delicious 6 shrimp skewer and enjoyed the bread basket which was half mixed whole grain and half slightly sweet white bread with a hint of orange. The Engine 7 salads with blue cheese and nuts were incredible. Our bowls of soup, firehouse chili and butternut squash/apple, were very good. We passed on dessert but the four choices looked incredible. The rather small wine list had good variety. A merlot blend from the low end was luscious, even though I'm not a great fan of merlot. The wait staff was very polite, chipper, neatly dressed, extremely efficient. If there is a problem with the speed or quality of service, we saw no hint of it. The breakfast, which is included in the room rate, is great. So, a nice atmosphere complete with fireplace, really good food, and fine service - we really are fans and recommend the Black Sheep to anyone. read more

I've eaten here for both breakfast and lunch. Breakfast: Included with the room and a very nice breakfast. Its standard buffet fare, but unlike buffet fare, the eggs are not dry and the french toast is actually pretty good - but the sausage, I don't know what they do to them, but they were mighty tasty, almost like they were cooked in maple, but not overly sweet. Lunch: The first time I got lunch here I got the soup/sandwich combo; it was very substantial and tasty. This time I only got the soup and salad combo. Again - very tasty and though still a lot of food, i managed to finish every bite. Will definitely go here again when visiting Boston. One of these days, I really need to try dinner here. read more

Excellent spot for a simple lunch, with attentive service, and excellent ambience. The building is an old converted fire station, and the owners have done an great job maintaining the buildings original charm, while making it comfortable for patrons. Recently had lunch here and I thought it was very good. Located inside the Kendall Hotel, it has nice decor and lots of vintage ambiance. An old firehouse works well as the home of this place, but it is small and has some unusual seating. That being said it was a perfect late summer day, so sitting outside was nice as it's better. It is black table and chairs outside against the brick exterior and numerous shrubs as "privacy" from the street. The service was decent, but not great considering it wasn't very, very busy. I had the Cobb Salad and found it to be among the best versions I've ever had. (I added a picture of it). It starts with finely cut lettuce and dressing and then they add the various ingredients in rows on top (cheddar, blue, mozzarella) bacon, ham, eggs. Simple yet fresh and delicious. Most salads and entrees here are going to run about $20-$30 per person with a drink, so it would have been nice if it was a little less. They do seem to run specials, but nothing jumped out at me on this particular day. I would eat here again sometime. read more

I came here for lunch and ordered the "skinny salad" but asked for the lemon vinaigrette that comes with the chicken curry salad. Based off other reviews, I might have been lucky, because my portion was perfectly fine. We were able to grab a seat outside (most of which is shaded) so it was a perfect spot for a Tuesday lunch. The waitress was friendly and helped get our drinks and order right away. I would say that the food took longer to come out than expected, but I could tell the chicken was freshley grilled and it was worth the wait in my opinion. We did finish eating and had to wait another 10-15 for the check, which is somewhat significant if you're trying to get in an hour lunch in Kendall during the lunch hour. Salad was a top 4/5 salad I've ever had. Fresh ingredients and made in a good ratio. It is a pricey salad, but most sit down lunches are in Kendall or in Boston in general. read more

Admittedly, I eat more than the average bear, but seriously, the "Organic Chicken" for $25 must have been anorexic -- I think I ate the whole entree in 3 bites. Really crowded at lunchtime, loud and bustling-- we were seated in a back dining room with what appeared to be a child's drawing of the US on the wall, and lots of other interesting antiques. Our waitress was okay but kind of a spaceshot...seemed like she wanted to be somewhere else...she got our orders right which surprised me because she was definitely at least partially on another astral plane. The food was pretty good-- i was feeling like a light lunch so I shied away from the grilled cheese, which I think was a mistake, because it came to another table and looked all tomato and cheesy on thick bread, overflowing with goodness. Instead I got the 1/2 salad and soup option-- the corn chowder was actually great, but the chicken waldorf salad left a bit to be desired. Overall it was okay, but there were these annoying seasoned walnuts in it that tasted like roses. I was with my boss, and she tasted one, confirming my floral accusation. I used to think this place was great. It was the place to go when looking for something outside the norm that is good quality. That has now changed. First off they took my favorite thing off their menu. It was the butternut squash ravioli & it was damn good. Oh thank you sweet merciful Christ! I FINALLY have a place to spend 15 dollars on a ham sandwich, and 3 dollars for a glass of lemonade. After I looked at the menu the first time, I knew that I wasn't in Kendall anymore. Ow. Ow ow ow. That's the sound your ass makes when it realizes that either your wallet is much much lighter, your credit card is on fire, or you just realize that you actually have spent 15 dollars on a sandwich that's pretty much what you could make with a sandwich maker. Oh yes, it's all very good food, but I have to wonder exactly where it's all going. It's nice that they remodeled the place, but the entire layout of the restaurant is trying to go for that "Quirky turn of the 20th century (or earlier)" thing, but it ends up being very confusing and instead of feeling cozy, it feels like, well, you're in a converted location. I'll admit that I was with a large group of people, and we were thrown in the conference room, so that might be part of the reason why it felt like there was less atmosphere than Ganymede. Maybe it's better if you have just three or two people parties, but eh, it's honestly too expensive for me to go back there on any regularity. Go, but make sure your boss is putting it on the company expense account. And hey, it's BUCKETLOADS better than Characters, but so is putting your fingers in a meat grinder. read more

It is in the area I work in and felt like it was about time to try Black Sheep. The food was good albeit pricey for what you get. We ordered 2 apps and they were ok. For dinner, I had the penne w/chicken and the cream sauce it was in was extremely heavy. All went fine up until the check. 3 of us were splitting the check, 2 with cash the other with a card. Once we gave the bill back, we thought we were all set and left. Our friend with the card left but the rest of us waited in front of Black Sheep for our rides.... Out of no where I saw a crazed waiter (not our waitress) run outside yelling about the bill! We were all so confused at what the problem was because we could not understand what he was saying! All we got out of his rant was "service" "no tip" "service". As we were trying to understand the situation, he then says "you know what, this is fine! Have a goodnight!". Once we put his tirade together in our heads, we realized we had made a mistake! Our waitress was not great, but, we would never stiff someone on tip. We then went in and spoke with our waitress (not this crazy dude) to give the additional $$ but ignored this guy completely! Never the less-What happens if we really didn't like our service??? I used to come here only because it's close to MIT, which is where I worked. The food is very inconsistent, and often overcooked or dry. The sandwiches here are ok and the ingredients are generally fresh but the taste is not up to par for a nice sit down restaurant. I found this restaurant to be very accomodating and vegetarian friendly - it could have just been my waiter though... he was very patient with my questions (what is the base of the soup? How do you make this vegetarian; just remove the chicken or substitute something else in it's stead?) and answered with confidence. In the end, my Warm Harvest Wrap was delicious and way more than I needed; the side salad substitution was delicious as well - the basil vinegrette was bursting with all the right flavors for an autumn day. Minus a star for the price and the seating arrangements. As good as my food was there was no way it should have cost $12.75. Also, beverages are $2.00/glass with no free refills offered? That's just stingy if you ask me... So is not having more tables! My friend and I were seated at a table with two other women; this basically forced us to listen to their very opinionated conversation while eating. Maybe we did this place a disservice by ordering the two most simplistic dishes on the menu. That said, it's a quaint spot nestled in the Kendall/MIT area. Part of the Kendall Hotel, it's old and intimate and there are few tables. So here's the problem. It's slow. While others seem to find the leisurely pace of everything to be quaint, I found it to be frustrating. The service was pleasant and friendly enough, but man... it was about like this: Sit down. Wait 4 minutes. Be brought menus. Wait 3 minutes. Be brought water. Wait 6 minutes. Take the drink order. Wait 7 minutes. Get drink. Order an appetizer. Wait 6 minutes. Ask if we have questions about the menu. Wait 5 minutes. You get the idea... a simple drink, appetizer and dinner will take you a really long time. OH yeah, and the biggest problem (clearly, the most inexcusable problem)? THEY USE THE FONT PAPYRUS ON THEIR SIGNAGE! This review is for breakfast and after dinner drinks/appetizers only. Breakfast: One of the best free hotel breakfast I've ever had. What would have made this 5stars? An omelet bar. I love fresh omelets in the morning. Alas, no such luck. Of course you'll have your normal scrambled eggs/pancakes/freshly baked breads/bacon/oatmeal etc. But what stands out is the hard boiled eggs still in the shell (so you know they're fresh!) Dates (who has dates at free morning breakfast?!?) Figs... yummmmm. Organic coffee! and... slices of delicious cheese. So good. Also, deliciously fresh cantaloupe. Also, don't miss out on the awesome gas fireplace. It really brings together the room, especially in the winter. Now for after dinner drinks/appetizers. Choose to sit next to the fireplace. It's so awesome when it's snowing and you're chatting with friends with a glass of wine. We ordered the fresh mozzarella with tomato and basil salad. Massive pieces of mozzarella. so good. We then ordered the vegetarian quesadilla. Again, great presentation and super fresh with great accompaniments. Really cute place, but kind of small, esp around the holidays when everyone is trying to do their holiday lunches and what not. Menu wasn't very inspiring, but decided on the kale salad with lemon vinaigrette and salmon. The salmon came out cold which I didn't like, I'd have preferred it to be freshly made to order. It also was Cajun or something with the spices but it didn't go right with the salad. The kale looked like it had been through a food processor but the flavors were ok. It was strange that in addition to the salmon steak there was more cold salmon throughout the salad. It also came with great bread which was toasted But drenched in butter. Other people in my group ordered the taco salad which looked better.. at least the beef looked decent as did the cheese and salsa. read more

The lunch menu has a good variety of soups, wraps, salads and sandwiches, but is bit on the pricey side. I found the portion sizes to be pretty large and wasn't able to finish my sandwich, but I was able to take it back to the office with me. I highly recommend the savory chicken sandwich - yum grilled chicken with caramelized onions, sauted red peppers, pesto spread and feta cheese. Delish! All I know is that Banquet fried chicken and Bird's Eye mixed vegetables and instant mashed potatoes taste no better when prepped at home, however fixing them yourself is a damn sight cheaper than the $17 I plunked down in that former firehouse. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual (jeans are appropriate), and the service is good. The entrance and lobby spill over to the dining area, which can be a bit cramped, and though low-lit, doesn't quite approach "romantic". The food was hearty and good, though I wouldn't describe it as inventive. I'd go back, but I certainly don't think the prices were consistent with the quality of food, although Kendall does have a dearth of nice restaurants, so there is some value in that, I guess. I started with the fried goat cheese, which came with crackers, toast points, and some fruit. It was fine - nothing original. For the main course, I went with the sea bass, which was flavorful and good. Again, the food IS good - just don't go expecting it to be imaginative. The food isn't terrible, but it's completely forgettable, with lots of small errors. I had the filet MR, but it came out medium, with no sear to speak of, and under seasoned. Asparagus was the "seasonal" vegetable, though I'm pretty sure those aren't in season in Boston. The special house salad was over dressed and presented in an out of fashion way. Service was very disappointing for a place at this price point. No water refill until I asked, and left me to sit a long time after service ended, even though I was one of just a few tables here. The atmosphere of this place is quite pleasant. Adorable fake fireplace and a quaint B&B Lobby setting. Their couches and chairs are incredibly comfortable and their antique coffee table I wanted to take with me. The service was non-intrusive but not particularly attentive. Wine and beer selection: respectable. Not too expensive and overall quite decent. I came out here with two of my new coworkers (technically bosses of mine) and got to woo them with my wine knowledge when they let me sample a couple of the reds to determine the best choice for our meals. A decent humblebrags opportunity-- I'll take it. Making average and uncreative food is termed "American" here. I mean sure, a kale salad with cranberries and light vinaigrette is fantastic but don't dice it all up so I just feel like I'm munching on bland tabouli. In general their vegan/vegetarian options were incredibly limited; American restaurants do tend to be that way anyways. read more

I came here in a Monday and dined outside with my friend and her dog. We were one of two tables at this dinner hour. The service was horrendous. The waiter never came back to check up on our OVERPRICED 18 dollar veggie burgers, that came with some measly "homemade" potato chips. The meal was barely warm, and the bread that was supposed to come out before the meal, came out at the same time (and it was the worst bread I've ever had. I've never said "that bread was bad" in my life, because I like ALL bread, but this bread was covered in flour, and was dry and tasteless). I had to get up twice to get service. One, when the meals were brought out, no ketchup or BBQ sauce was brought out, as I had asked. So I got up and went to the waiter who was standing at the bar chatting, for it. Then, he never came back to check on us outside (I repeat, there were TWO TABLES there that night, including ours), and so I had to once again, get up and ask for the check. So irritating. The lunch menu is biased to the sandwich/soup crowd but its decent and not terribly expensive. A few concerns: the place is small so make reservations. Went to black sheep for dinner, taking a client. This is a restaurant that is part of a hotel, in an old firehouse. Cool idea. The restaurant is really small, like 10 tables or so in a small corner of the lobby of the hotel. Menu was also very small, not a lot there. I ordered a filet mignon, was actually cooked perfectly. My dining partners enjoyed their entrees. We had a handful of entrees which were all pretty good. Overall place is tiny, menu is limited but the food we ordered was all very good. I think it's probably better for lunch.. the crowd at dinner was a bit odd and the food was really over priced! I got a spinach salad with chicken and it was 22 dollars. Absurd - especially for what it was. It was good, but I feel like I've had the same thing at the cheesecake factory. Baby spinach, pecans, blue cheese, and chicken. Sound familiar? My friend's dish was yummy (their take on a chicken broccoli ziti), but the sauce was literally butter, cheese, and cream.
