The fish and short rib tacos were both delicious, while the shrimp one was fine. The prices are a bit steep, considering it's 1 taco per order, but they were very good. We also had some margs, which were refreshing & spicy. Service: 4/5 They were busy, so it was a little hard to get the server's attention, but no real issues, and that was understandable. This review is for takeout. I love this spot so much, and it has become our go to place for nachos and tacos. The nachos alone are a good enough reason to give this spot 5 stars. The nachos are a magical dish made of delicious happiness mixed with the best pickled everything. I'm also a fan of the short rib taco and the fish taco. What a cute little place! With outdoor seating as well. We were able to get a table on the same day but it was packed so we must have been lucky. The food is a bit expensive but it was delicious. I had brisket and short rib tacos(8$ each).. both delicious and with corn wrap! Close to authentic. And we had nachos with corn sauce (11$). It was delicious. This was a recommendation from the server. I was concerned that we may get cold of outdoor seating and they also offered blankets! How nice of them. And wide variett of margheritas.. I went here tonight for dinner although I've been once before. Tonight I got the carnitas taco (amazing!) and the chorizo and roasted apple queso fundido. We weren't exactly sure how to eat the queso since it case with tortillas, and we weren't able to track down our waiter soon enough. The queso was good, but nothing special (it's hard to go wrong with a big pot of cheese!). I previously have gotten their nachos which are out of this world. Tonight I wanted to try something new, but I kind of regret not getting the nachos because they are just so amazing. I also got their passion fruit margarita. They have a nice lineup of margaritas. The passion fruit one was good, but I have to say I have fonder memories of the cucumber and diablo ones I got the last time I was there. We had made a reservation, which is definitely needed on a weekend night because it can get really busy! Had brunch here today with a friend and loved it!! First of all, the place is ok the medium size but cozy and cute with really cool decorations on the ceiling and walls. I had a typical mimosa (yum always) and for food, they serve you chips and salsa first. For the meal I had the burro bowl (can't remember the exact name!) and it was so so good. I don't like spicy food but this had just a tiny but with the flavor and was calmed down by the cheese and eggs. Just what you want for brunch! Very fresh ingredients. Also the staff was super nice. I'm really indecisive and our waiter helped me out a lot by narrowing down the choices and being honest about what was better. The restaurant is a little hidden on the street. From the outside the restaurant does not look impressive; however, the inside is beautifully decorated. This is a great place for brunch and attracts many people on Sundays. Make sure to book a reservation beforehand. They have options to order individual mimosas or a 'bucket' for a table. My group ordered the bucket with mango and pineapple juice which was very tasty. Most of the food is included in the $25 fee - some sides cost extra. The portions per each item on the menu is small so don't be shy when ordering items. As for the food, everything tasted delicious. On Mother's Day, we called for take-outs and our order was taken. We were told food would be ready in 20mins. We arrived to pick up (with my 2 toddlers in tow) and was told that they did not offer take out that day and had no way to reach us to tell us earlier. We were really looking forward to trying the food, but was incredibly disappointed by the service. Visited burro bar for dinner. Their birria tacos were delicious! I tried their house margarita and you could tell it was a fresh- margarita mix. The tacos are on the $7/ each range but I was very full after 2 tacos and a side of plantains. I would say it is definitely worth the money. It is on-street parking but I was able to find some parking on the close-by side streets. If you are around brookline, this is a great place to try for sure. read more

Three of us went for brunch/breakfast this morning. We were able to make reservations for the patio. Everything was clean and spacious which made me feel at easy. Service was quick and super helpful. Seating: they take reservations, which is nice. We got seated right away, and they don't make you wait for your entire party to arrive before letting you sit down. The restaurant is not super big so it is a little crowded. Noise level: a little on the louder side (to the point where I have to talk louder but not yell). It's not a place to bring young children or have a family dinner. Food: overall I'd give it a 4/5. They give complimentary chips and salsa, which I loved!!!! We also ordered the apple chorizo cheese dip, which is sweet and savory as it sounds. I didn't love it but was interesting to try. The roasted chipotle chicken enchilada was very tasty. It just would've been nice to have some more sauce with the dish. There was just a little sauce on top. It came with 3 enchiladas. As for the tacos, the brisket taco was delicious!!! The baha style fish taco was so-so; it wasn't bad but not the best fish taco I've had. Each order comes with one taco (about 6 inches). Two tacos should be enough for those of you who don't eat a lot in general and don't eat til you're full. But for most people, you probably need 3 tacos especially if you're not getting an appetizer. Short version: I've come here several times and definitely recommend it for small groups for drinks and some food. Highlights are the margaritas and the stuffed jalapeños. Long version: Food: Food here is pretty good although the tacos are a bit overpriced. My feelings on them are pretty mixed as well although the fish tacos are pretty good. The stuffed jalapeños wrapped in bacon are absolutely amazing and I get them every time I come. Drinks: Margaritas here are amazing. I once asked them to do the spicy one very very spicy and I could barely feel my lips afterwards (although I won't be doing that again they definitely delivered). Ambience: Decor is very cool and artsy. Place usually gets packed and I wouldn't suggest the place for larger groups (you need to call to see if they can make space for groups larger than 5, just to give you an idea). Brookline is undergoing a change - Coolidge Corner is the "hot, go-to destination" in town, but it's really Washington Square that has all the must-try eateries. Burro Bar is hands down, my Brookline establishment of choice. And that's a tough choice to make! Easy to get to, although parking at times can be a challenge, the food well makes up for it. I could go just for the guacamole (pork belly optional) and the street corn alone. UH MI GAH. Yum. They've recently added a "patio" - literally built a raised deck for outdoor seating - which I have not yet tried (those RSVPs are harder to get than just the restaurant alone) but it looks fantastic. Well decorated, comfy interior, and the waitstaff and bartenders are friendly and helpful. Food? Well, I don't even know where to begin. OUTSTANDING. This is a "you're a fool not to try it" type of restaurant. It is convenient to the green line (C-line), so no excuses! Only issue, but it's a "what can you do?" type issue: It gets very loud in their small space in the evenings, the bar is overflowing with people, and the tables themselves are fairly close to one another. I am so sad to hear that Burro Bar is closed for the winter. I just discovered this place and wish I had sooner! I've had the cauliflower and fish tacos and neither disappointed! The tacos were a good size compared to other similar places. The inside is very well decorated and has a nice atmosphere. The bar is interesting to look at and the drinks are great! My boyfriend and I made a reservation for 2 at 6:00pm, and by 6:30pm it was pretty close to a full house. And this is on a Monday, so make a reservation if you can! My boyfriend and I started off with margaritas. I usually don't enjoy margaritas but I really did like their passion fruit one! More on the sweeter side than the tequila side. Next up: pork belly guacamole. The guacamole itself was on the better end of guacamoles I have had in Boston, but I felt like the pork belly was a little out of place. Of course you could get the guac without the pork belly, but isn't pork belly supposed to make everything better? I'd recommend you opt out of the pork belly. Corn: The waiter said this was their most popular dish. Corn off the cob with spices that are balanced by sweet corn. The portion of this was bigger than I expected, but I didn't love it. It needed more cheese! But complemented the guac well. Tortilla chip + guac + corn + and a dip into salsa was just punches of flavor. Tacos, tacos, tacos. So many options! My boyfriend and I tried the baja fish, blacken mahi mahi, the carnes asada, and the double stack. My favorite one of the night was short rib double stack taco. I love the one layer of tortilla and another crispy. Nice texture. I felt like all the tacos needed a touch of hot sauce, but surprisingly there was no hot sauce on the table. Burro Bar's the latest addition to my neighborhood, so I was super excited to check it out. From outside the decor was beautiful and the place looked busy every night. I figured with a few weeks under its belt, the odds were good any opening day hiccups would have been smoothed out. However. We were quoted a 1 hour+ wait at the door, which was totally fine; it actually turned out to be 45 minutes when the text came saying our table was ready. However, when we got to the restaurant, the table wasn't ready - so we waited another 20 minutes, standing awkwardly in front of the door (there is no waiting area), plotting out what we would order. When we were finally seated, we waited another 10 minutes until our waiter came. At one point during that half hour, my husband suggested leaving to go eat reheated pizza at home because we were so hungry. Once we were fed chips and salsa, and our food started arriving, the rosy colored glasses came back on. Here's what we got, in order of "yum!" to decent: - Street corn (trust me, just get it) - Baja style fish taco (melts in your mouth) - Blackened grouper taco (super flavorful) - Calamari taco (pleasingly crunchy) - Guacamole (smooth, with a lot of lime) - Short rib taco (lost in translation with the double stack) I would rank my passionfruit margarita in the upper levels of that list; you could barely taste the tequila, which is the mark of an excellent (and dangerous) drink. Other things to note: - The restaurant has a funky mix of elegant and irreverent decor - The service is decent - It's a great spot for pulling up a chair at the bar. Blizzards, theater tickets, and calendar quirks caused me to eat at Burro Bar three times in close succession. I have now tried a significant proportion of the menu. It may be the only non-sushi octopus offered in Brookline. It was my first time having sweet octopus. My first dining companion who is from Greece seemed to be hesitant about this preparation. The street corn is my favorite menu item; it wins with by a significant margin. I could eat this dish daily. It's that well done. It should be noted that the wait staff is top notch. I haven't had such good service since Kava Neo-Taverna in the South End. The waiters, chef, and kitchen staff are incredibly accommodating when it comes to dietary limitations and allergens. They come out and ask whether the same grill and oil can be used. Plus, they are just talented. The last waiter gave me the street corn recipe on a post it note. Some of the dishes are a bit overpriced. For example, there are other local menus where the guacamole earns the high price tag. I did find some of the non-taco dishes to be small given the price tag. This is not a terminal situation but I do hope that they increase the portions a bit. The nachos which I didn't order seem to be the biggest dish on the menu. During my next (future visit), I would drop all pretense and order 2 Mexican Street Corn dishes. It's literally the best thing on the menu. O.o read more

Very popular new restaurant in Brookline, earliest reservation I could get for a group of 4-5 was at 9:30pm! I tried two weekends in a row and the second weekend, my group was like "F this, we'll just go at 9:30!" A break down of what we got: - complimentary chips and salsa- perfectly fried, crisp tortilla chips. the salsa was good too but it wasn't chunky enough for me - Guacamole "El Mero Mero"- the guacamole was a tad too salty for me, I would not order this again for $9 - Mexican Street Corn Esquites- I love Mexican street corn and was looking forward to trying this the most especially because the corn was already off the cob. With high hopes comes great disappointment. The corn was too dry and would have benefitted from more cheese. Toro in the South End IMO still has the best corn! - Nachos con Chorizo de la Casa- Amazing. I loved every bite since every chip was loaded with toppings. I really enjoyed that they used a jalapeno and cabbage slaw. $14 for a small portion but probably the most bang for your buck of all the plates we got. Squash + Cauliflower Queso Fundidos- If you love cheese this is the dish to get. Basically a melted cheese dip (Queso). As much as I liked this, $15 was a rip off - Carne Asada taco- This was a "special" the night I went. Carne asada is pretty common in Mexican cuisine so I'm surprised this isn't on their regular menu. Whatever the case, the taco was BOMB. Incredibly juicy and flavorful. - Double Stack Short Rib taco- I didn't get this but my friends said the taco was also BOMB - Margaritas- I got the Spicy Margarita and it was meh, I've had better. My friend ordered the passion fruit margarita and enjoyed hers Conclusion: Expensive and trendy Mexican food. My group of 5 shared all the dishes and we each got a taco. Lots to be hopeful for at this new Washington Square joint but unfortunately some grow pains and hiccups along with the high points. Atmosphere: Tres cool Mexican nouveau. Great lighting, new age Mexican art, well highlighted tequila bottling on display behind the bar. They pack in a lot of seating into the space. The front windows look to open up so here's hoping they take advantage of the outdoor seating potential during warm weather as Ribelle did. The place has two TVs and is kind nice in that very few bars have this around WashSq. The only disappointing thing was the overly loud music. Everyone was leaning in and shouting to talk it was about twice as loud at Barcelona and that's saying something. The poor elderly ladies next to us were doomed! Unnecessary! Service: Service was okay. Not as bad as the wait issues others have noted (hey, it's a brand new place with hype! It happens), but we did have to point out the open table to our host when he said it'd be 15-20 until a table opened up. When we pointed it out, he was relieved and quickly obliged. The waiter was very friendly but seemed a little disorganized. He brought our check after our appetizer! He quickly remedied the situation -- not a big deal -- but reflective of the newness and perhaps overwhelm. Water was always filled and dishes cleared quickly. We didn't feel rushed otherwise. Everything came out hot. Food: High and low here. The plating and appearance of all the dishes was appealing. The chips and salsa are surprising refreshing and nice. The mezcalrita was pretty good but a little steep in price. The nachos were phenomenal, as in I can't remember when I've had nachos this great. Fresh, vibrant, differing textures, intense and savory. This ain't your sport pub or faux Tex-mex nachos. LOVE. Aaaannndddd the two entrees were disappointing. The shrimp al ajillo was about six shrimp, tiny, lackluster and $13. The short rib taco was 6" and was a little over cooked. I got a little burned flavor either from the short rib or one of the shells (they double up with a soft and hard taco shell). At $8 I felt it was a little too expensive. I get what they're doing there--not a full entree with rice/beans or side so less expensive and more than just a few bucks for a taco half the size. However, I'd prefer one of those other extremes. Others ordered multiple tacos, as I was planning to do. However, after the disappointing taco and shrimp platter, we called it an evening. Overall I thought it was good but not great. I'm hopeful it'll get through some growing pains and will return in a few weeks to give it a second chance. I think the best way to describe this place is "solid," in every way. The service was friendly if not perfectly prompt, and they VERY kindly reseated us to a table in the shade when we asked. The patio is lovely and $21 for bottomless brunch (drinks and sides not included) is fair. They have a great selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, including 5 different types of tacos (breakfast, fish, shrimp, short rib, and a fifth I forget). And everything tastes decent. Eh. This was my second time here and I think we're done with it. It's in a nice location close to where I live, easy to get to, etc., but the service and management is too frustrating to deal with. I worked in the industry for enough years that I'm not here to throw a total bratty fit about our experience because it wasn't AWFUL... this place just needs some work. We went on Cinco de Mayo and showed up 15 mins early for our 2:45 reservation. There were tables open, but they couldn't seat us because there was a 2:30 reservation (that never showed up). They told us to go to the bar to wait. The bar has about 10 seats (all filled), but no one was standing waiting besides us. We didn't even get looked at by the bartender until 2:40, and we waited until 2:45 to even order a drink. We were sat (at the same table that was open the whole time) at 2:45, and the drinks came another 10 mins later. Tables opened throughout the whole time and they just wouldn't seat us, which is fine because we were early, but they were telling people coming in that there would be a 45 min wait for a group of 4 and people were gesturing at the multiple open tables and asking about them and were leaving after whatever they were told. It just was a bad look overall. The bartender was SO slow and measuring every single thing out in a jigger. Everyone has to start somewhere, but if she's new (I'm gonna give her the benefit of the doubt here), don't start her on Cinco de Mayo. She was sniffing shakers to see if they were clean (they weren't, she used the same one over and over). More appalling, she would touch the ice in the glasses after scratching her hair. She must've been having sinus issues because she kept rubbing her nose. I didn't watch while she made our drinks and just hoped whatever was in her hair or her nose wasn't contagious or gross. There was another bartender working. I'm not sure what he was doing, but I didn't see him make any drinks. He seemed to be chatting with the people at the other end of the bar and maybe made a drink or two for them. The scratching head & nose girl was making drinks for people at the bar and all the tables. The kitchen was moving FAST, which was great, but makes things a little more awkward with a slow bar. Our appetizer came out before our drinks that had been ordered before we sat down, and was wrong. We didn't bother sending it back because we didn't want to wait. We finally got our drinks. Food was good, and margaritas were good too. Our server Karen was nice but never really checked on us. We ordered main courses after another 20 mins later and a tequila flight. The food flew out fast again and the flight took another 15 mins. We decided to order one more shared plate and we ended up having to take a fork off the table next to us and share it to eat because we just never saw our server again until it was time to pay. Overall, food is good, bar was slow, server was nice but inattentive (maybe overwhelmed?)... there seemed to be way too many hostesses and far too few servers. They also oddly brought in a huge order of raw vegetables and food in crates through the front door and in the middle of that small restaurant room while we ate. Bizarre. No better time to do this than midday Cinco de Mayo, or no backdoor? The REAL MVP was the girl who cleared plates and refilled our waters. Small, younger girl with light eyes. The decorations for Cinco were cute. Overall, not worth the frustration. Maybe we'll try the South End one next time. Burro Bar is the perfect restaurant to add to both Washington Square and Brookline. The area needs additional trendy places to enjoy. This is a sister restaurant to other locations in Boston. The food is great. Interestingly enough they don't offer burritos. However the Nachos, queso, and tacos are excellent. Portions are large. I've been twice. First time we enjoyed a family dinner. They are kid friendly. Second time we enjoyed drinks at the bar with friends and stayed for a great dinner at the bar. The place fills up fast so get there early. read more

My sister made reservations for 6. But with the south end one, not the Brookline one. Manager took care of us and got us a table pretty fast and called over to the other restaurant to cancel our reservation there. The drinks were great. Salsa & chips were awesome. Wait staff is very friendly. I had the Short-rib Double Stack and the Gulf Shrimp Diablo (see picture). You may say they look small, but they are packed with flavor. All the dishes looked, smelt & tasted great. I am use to Mexican restaurants that put red sauce on everything they make. Not this place. The flavor was on target with real Mexican food. The only con was that the A/C unit was not working that great that night. But I'm not gonna hold that against them. It was the hottest day this year and the manager said they were having a problem with it. read more

I wanted to love this place because the drinks are great and it's so cute!! We got the corn and poblano fundido which was really good, also the mezcal and spicy marg were great. The tacos and enchiladas however were not good at all. No fresh salsas on any of the tacos, just greasy aiolis and lettuce. I was surprised that none of them had any kind of fresh pico or any other kind of salsa. We got the fish, short rib and shrimp tacos and I wouldn't recommend any of them, not to mention they were each $7-8 which is crazy- especially for the sub par quality. Everything was dry almost as if it was reheated leftovers, including the fried fish. We were equally disappointed with the pork enchiladas. The sauce was not at all tasty and the pork was dry. Definitely would come back just for drinks and something like a quesadilla? Hopefully that would be better. read more

Grabbed some take out from here for the first time recently. I grabbed an order of their nachos and the pork enchiladas. Overall this place is on the pricey side for Mexican, but they give you huge portions so it's definitely worth it. The mole in the enchiladas was incredible. I would order this again in a heartbeat. The nachos had a little bit too much lettuce/cabbage in them but the meat and other toppings in them were delicious. I can't wait to come and dine in here because the drinks looked amazing. read more

We were invited to dinner for the soft opening on Saturday, Jan 28th. The space is lively, but still intimate with candles on each table. Eclectic and colorful, the green walls are decorated with mirrors and cool art. The music is loud enough to enjoy, but doesn't drown out your words when talking to your party. The waitress who seated us encouraged us to be adventurous and try things on the menu we wouldn't typically order. So we ended up getting a bunch of things- Scallop Ceviche, Grouper Con Coconut, Squash + Cauliflower Queso Fundido, and 4 tacos: Beef Tongue, Chicken Liver, Shrimp Diablo, and Crispy Baja Style Fish. I highly recommend the Grouper con Coconut. The coconut mole had a rich, creamy flavor that reminded me of Thai curry, and paired with the grouper it was simply heavenly. The squash and cauliflower queso was another favorite of ours. The pureed squash, roasted cauliflower topped with melted cheese was unlike anything I've ever had. And if you're looking for something on the spicier side, I recommend the baja fish taco or the chicken liver taco. My friend especially enjoyed the beef tongue taco - it's definitely more on the adventurous side, but worth the try. It melts in your mouth and is accompanied by a nice hazelnut-y crunch. I'm not a fan of vodka, but I took a chance and ordered The Point (loved it!). It's a fig flavored vodka cocktail with a hint of honey. I also got the Palomero, a grapefruit flavored tequila base cocktail which I enjoyed as well. We also had our eyes on the Shrimp al ajillo and the Roasted Beets Bocaditos but were so full after the tacos, that we decided to leave it for the next time we come to Burro Bar! read more
